Luis VEGA GONZÁLEZ, Scientific Director of BCAM - Basque Center for Applied

Mathematics has collected the excellence accreditation award corresponding to the 2013 call of

Severo Ochoa program, which recognizes the center as one of the 5 Spanish centers among

the best in the world in their field. The award ceremony, presided by Ms. Carmen VELA, has

taken place this morning in the Ministry of Research, Development and Innovation. Itziar

ALKORTA IDIAKEZ, Deputy Minister for Universities and Research of the Basque Government

and representatives of the University of the Basque Country have attended the event.

BCAM is the first center for Applied Mathematics and the first center of the Basque

Country that gets this award. The accreditation is a strong boost to the center, together with the

support it receives through the BERC program sponsored by the Department Education, Culture

and Language Policy of the Basque Government, and it will allow in the coming months the

hiring PhD students and postdoctoral researchers that will be selected through and an

international BCAM that has already received nearly 300 candidates. As part of the strategic

plan of the center, it is also planned to incorporate new senior researchers through programs

like Ikerbasque Research Professor.

 

The main strategic value provided by the Research Program of BCAM is to strengthen the

current research and development of new lines, to provide tools to analyze, understand and

reduce as far as possible the complexity of the world we surrounding. Particularly important are

the advanced modeling and simulation techniques that currently allow troubleshooting of

multiple areas (industrial, energy, materials, health, social, ecological, financial ... ). to transfer

its excellence research in Applied Mathematics to other scientific, technological and industrial

agents, contributing in a sustainable manner to XXI century societal challenges.

In the event, BCAM Scientific Director, Luis Vega González, has commented that “Programs

such as Severo Ochoa have a key importance so as to promote scientific excellence, since the

recognition provided by this accreditation and its boost (not only economic, but also scientific

prestige) encourages us to continue working hard”. He has also stated that “this will also

contribute to strengthen BCAM position in the world Mathematics map” and “will allow us to

develop new research lines, apart from strengthening the current ones, going beyond their

scientific objectives”.

 

Luis VEGA GONZÁLEZ (Madrid, 1960)

Professor of Mathematics at the University of the Basque Country (UPV / EHU) since 1995 and

Scientific Director of BCAM- Basque Center for Applied Mathematics since May 2013.

He has been recognized for his significant contributions to mathematics by means of the

Euskadi Research Prize 2012 from the Basque Government - Eusko Jaurlaritza and Visiting

Fellow of the American Mathematical Society. He is also "Highly Cited Scientist" by ISI-

Thomson in 2004 and Corresponding Member of the Royal Academy of Exact, Physical and

Natural Sciences in 2013.

The scientific work of Prof. VEGA focuses on the interaction of Fourier Analysis and Partial

Differential Equations of Mathematical Physics. His work has had a major international impact

and has given a very high exposure to Spanish mathematics.

The “Severo Ochoa Centers of Excellence" accreditation is a subprogram of the State

Department for Research, Development and Innovation of the Ministry of Economy and

Competitiveness , whose aim is to strengthen excellence in research carried out in Spain in

any science field. This recognition is valid for four years with a grant of € 4,000,000 as set by

the call.

Luis VEGA GONZÁLEZ, Director Científico de BCAM - Basque Center for Applied

Mathematics ha recogido este mediodía el galardón correspondiente a la convocatoria 2013

del programa “Severo Ochoa” , que reconoce al centro como uno de los 5 centros españoles

que están entre los mejores del mundo en su ámbito. La entrega de galardones presidida por

Dña. Carmen VELA ha tenido lugar en la Secretaría de Estado de Investigación, Desarrollo e

Innovación. Al acto ha asistido también Dña. Itziar ALKORTA IDIAKEZ, Viceconsejera de

Universidades e Investigación del Gobierno Vasco y representantes de la Universidad del País

Vasco.

 

BCAM es el primer centro de Matemáticas Aplicadas y el primer centro del

País Vasco que consigue este galardón. La acreditación supone un fuerte impulso al

fortalecimiento del centro que, junto con el apoyo que recibe a través del Programa BERC

promovido por el Dpto. Educación, Política Lingüística y Cultura del Gobierno Vasco, va a

permitir la contratación en los próximos meses de estudiantes de doctorado e investigadores

postdoctorales, plazas para las que se ha abierto una call internacional que ha recibido cerca

de 300 candidaturas. Como parte del plan estratégico del centro se plantea también incorporar

nuevos investigadores seniors a través de programas como el Ikerbasque Research Professor.

El principal valor estratégico que aporta el Programa de Investigación de BCAM consiste en

proporcionar herramientas para analizar, entender y reducir en la medida de lo posible la

complejidad del mundo que nos rodea. Especial importancia tienen las técnicas avanzadas de

modelización y simulación que permitan actualmente la resolución de problemas de múltiples

ámbitos (industrial, energético, materiales, salud, social, ecológico, financiero...). El objetivo de

BCAM es además, transferir su investigación de excelencia en Matemáticas Aplicadas a otros

agentes científico tecnológicos y empresariales, contribuyendo de forma sostenible a los retos

de la sociedad del s.XXI.

En el acto, Luis VEGA GONZÁLEZ, afirmó que “programas como el Severo Ochoa son de vital

importancia para el fomento de la excelencia científica, ya que el reconocimiento de esta

acreditación y su impulso tanto económico como el prestigio que supone nos anima a continuar

esforzándonos”. Además, dijo que “contribuirá asimismo a fortalecer la posición de BCAM en el

mapa mundial de las Matemáticas” y que “permitirá desarrollar nuevas líneas de investigación,

así como fortalecer las ya existentes, ampliando los objetivos científicos de las mismas”.

Luis VEGA GONZÁLEZ (Madrid, 1960) Desde 1995 es Catedrático de Matemáticas en la Universidad del País Vasco – Euskal Herriko

Unibertsitatea (UPV/EHU) y desde Mayo de 2013 es el Director Científico de BCAM- Basque

Center for Applied Mathematics. Ha sido reconocido por sus contribuciones significativas a las

matemáticas con el Premio de Investigación en Ciencia y Tecnología 2012 del Gobierno Vasco

– Eusko Jaurlaritza, así como Visiting Fellow de la American Mathematical Society. Reconocido

como “Highly Cited Scientist” en 2004 por ISI-Thomson y Correspondiente de la Real Academia

de Ciencias Exactas, Físicas y Naturales.

 

El trabajo científico del Prof. VEGA se centra en la interacción del Análisis de Fourier y las

Ecuaciones en Derivadas Parciales de la física matemática. Su trabajo ha tenido una gran

repercusión internacional y ha dado una visibilidad muy importante a la matemática española.  

El apoyo y acreditación de «Centros de Excelencia Severo Ochoa» es un subprograma de la

Secretaría de Estado de Investigación, Desarrollo e Innovación del Ministerio de Economía y

Competitividad que tiene por objeto fortalecer la investigación de excelencia que se realiza en

España en cualquiera de los campos de la ciencia. Este reconocimiento está vigente por cuatro

Luis Vegak, BCAM-eko Zuzendari Zientifikoak “Severo Ochoa” bikaintasun-akreditazioaren saria jaso du

Luis VEGA GONZÁLEZ-ek, BCAM-eko - Basque Center for Applied Mathematics-

Zuzendari Zientifikoak jaso du gaur eguerdian Severo Ochoa programaren 2013ko deialdiari

dagokion saria. Sari honek BCAM bere arloan munduko onenen artean dagoen bost espainiar

zentroetako bat dela adierazten du. Estatuko Ikerketa, Garapen eta Berrikuntzan Estatu

Idazkaria den Carmen Vela Andereak zuzendu du ekitaldia, eta bertara bildu dira Itziar Alkorta

Idiakez Anderea, Eusko Jaurlaritzako Unibertsitate eta Ikerketako sailburuordea eta Euskal

Herriko Unibertsitateko ordezkariak.

BCAM Matematika aplikatuen arloan sari hau lortzen duen lehenengo zentroa

da, eta baita Euskadin sari hau lortzen duen lehenengoa . Akreditazioak

zentroaren indartzea bultzatuko du, BERC Programaren bidez – Eusko Jaurlaritzaren

Hezkuntza, Hizkuntza Politika eta Kultura Sailak sustatuta- jasotzen duen laguntzarekin batera,

hurrengo hilabeteetan doktorego ikasleak eta ikerlariak kontratatzeko aukera izanik. Lanpostu

hauek betetzeko nazioarteko deialdi bat ireki da eta 300 hautagaitza inguru jaso dira.

Zentroaren Plan Estrategikoan ikerlari “senior”-ak kontratatzeko asmoa ere badago, Ikerbasque

Research Professor bezalako programen bidez.

BCAM-en Ikerkuntza Programaren balio estrategiko nagusiena inguratzen gaituen munduaren

konplexutasuna aztertu, ulertu eta, ahal den neurrian, murrizteko tresnak hornitzean datza.

 

Tresna horien artean, aparteko garrantzia dute modelizazio- eta simulazio-teknika aurreratuek,

zeinek aukera ematen baitute hainbat eremutako gaur egungo problemak ebazteko, hala nola

industria-arlokoak, energetikoak, materialekin lotutakoak, osasunarenak, sozialak, ekologikoak

eta finantza-arlokoak). BCAMen helburua da, gainera, matematika aplikatuetako ikerketa

bikaina beste eragile batzuetara zabaltzea (eragile zientifikoak, teknologikoak eta

enpresarialak), XXI. mendeko gizartearen erronkei modu jasangarrian erantzuteko asmoz.

Ekitaldian, Luis Vega Gonzalek (BCAM-en Zuzendari Zientifikoa) adierazi du “Severo Ochoa

bezalako programak oso garrantzitsuak dira bikaintasun zientifikoa bultzatzeko, zeren eta

akreditazio honen aintzatespenak eta bere bultzadak (ekonomikoa ez ezik, zientifikoa ere)

ahaleginak egiten jarraitzeko adorea ematen digute”. Horrez gain, esan du “BCAM-en posizioa

munduko matematikako mapan indartuko du” eta “ikerkuntza arlo berriak garatuko dira,

gauregunekoak indartzeaz gain, beren helburu zientifikoak zabalduz”.

1995etik Euskal Herriko Unibertsitateko (UPV/EHU) Matematika katedraduna da eta 2013ko

maiatzetik Basque Center for Applied Mathematics – BCAMeko Zuzendari Zientifikoa.

Bere ekarpen esanguratsuenak Matematikaren arloan aintzatetsiak izan dira Eusko Jaularitzako

Euskadi Ikerkuntza 2012 Sariarekin eta American Mathematical Society Visiting Fellow-arekin.

2004ko “Highly Cited Scientist” izan da ISI-Thomsonek adierazita eta Zientzia Zehatzen, Fisiken

eta Naturalen Errege Akademiaren kidea izanik.

VEGA Irakasleak Fourier Analisiaren eta Deribatu partzialetako ekuazioen interakzioan ikerketa

egiten du. Bere lanak nazioarteko ohiartzun handia izan du, espainiar matematikari zabalkunde

garrantzitsua emanez.  

«Severo Ochoa Bikaintasun Zentroen» babesa eta ziurtagiria Ekonomia eta

Lehiakortasun Ministerioaren Ikerketa, Garapen eta Berrikuntzako Estatu Idazkaritzaren

azpiprograma bat da, eta haren helburua da Espainian egiten den ikerketa bikaina, zientzia-

esparru guztietakoa, sendotzea. Ziurtagiri horri esker, zentroek urtean milioi bat euro jasoko

dute programak irauten duen lau urteetan.
