Zone Offense Principles vs. 1 or 3-man Front (1-2-1-1, 1-3-1, 3-2)
www.Two3Zone.net
• 2 guards on top in the gaps • Both Posts on the ball side (one low, one hi at elbow) • 1 guard in ballside corner
Get it started
• Ball is passed from one guard to the other on top, this triggers movement
• High post at elbow goes to opposite Low post and gets and outside screen on that defender
• Low post goes to opposite High Post and looks for the pass • Corner player takes off and runs to opposite corner for shot
Guards on Top
• When the ball comes to you, look High Post first, then to the corner, then to reversal
• Use angles when the ball is coming to you, step up and to the ball, then face and make your decision
• After you pass, move away from the ball to stretch the defense and open up weakside reversal. Might get a shot.
• If you are able to penetrate the gap, do it. That creates a 4 on 2. If There are Traps on Top
• If the top 3 defenders come out to trap you, do NOT pass across the court to the other guard
• Pass in to the High Post or to the corner • If ball comes straight in to the High Post, look to turn/shoot or kick to
the corner • If ball goes straight to corner first, look shot, then High Post for a shot
or High/Low pass
Zone Offense Principles vs. a 2-man Front (2-3 Zone Defense)
www.Two3Zone.net
• Dribbler on top, 2 wings. All in gaps. • Posts low, behind the block defenders
Use your dribble wisely
• Make the zone shrink (2 players guarding one) by attacking gaps straight-on, then find shooters
• Can also use dribble to wing, switching places with wing, and that opens up chance for a post feed (2 players guarding one)
Use ball reversal
• Swing ball faster than the defenders can move; or… • You can freeze the top defenders by using a hard dribble from top,
then pass to opp wing (2 on 1 situation) Flash to the Ball
• When the ball goes to the wing, the strong side post will get position on the low block and the weak side post can flash into the middle
• When you flash middle you don’t always have to shoot. Lots of times it will not be for a shot
• Simple thing is to play inside/out and look for your shooters • If you have a shot you can take it. You decide based on how the
defense plays you. • The weakside wing can also flash in the middle if the top zone
defender decides to play out high Posts
• Keep posts behind the zone • If we have early shots from the wing, gives us inside position for
rebounds • Keeps the defense wondering where you are, turning their heads,
which helps our guards • Allows us to get good post position and to flash middle because
they don’t know where you are • Posting on ballside: Anytime the ball goes to wing and bottom
defender steps out, you get position vs. middle defender. MUST BE QUICK!
• If bottom defender sags on Post, then wing has chance to shoot, or drive b/l using Post as screen
Screening the Zone
• Wing screens top defender and dribbler comes to wing
Zone Offense Principles vs. a 2-man Front (2-3 Zone Defense)
www.Two3Zone.net
• This creates a post chance, flash chance, and a shot chance • We can also go for a corner shot by sending the wing to the corner,
having the dribbler come to the wing, and having the ballside post screening the low defender
• If the low defender gets around the screen and out to the shooter, the post on ballside will seal the middle defender and post up
Shooters
• When ball goes inside, the outside players have to be ready to shoot
• In a gap • Step into the catch as the ball comes to you • Get Feet set and shoot • If you want to shoot a 3 get a step back so you can step into the 3
These are simple things we can do without having to learn a lot of sets.
