Our nation celebrates its 241st birthday on Tuesday. Four times in the Declaration of Independence the Founding Fathers invoke God in one way or another including the most well known: “We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with cer-tain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” A young future

president running for a seat in Congress on July 4, 1946 said, "The informing spirit of the American character has al-ways been a deep religious sense. Throughout the years, down to the present, a devotion to fundamental religious princi-ples has characterized American thought and action." Fifteen years later in his inauguration speech President Kennedy would rightly note: "The same revolutionary beliefs for which our forebears fought are still at issue around the globe — the belief that the rights of man come not from the generosity of the state but from the hand of God." Yes, indeed, let us pray in gratitude to God for the blessings that He has bestowed upon our nation. Yet to those who have been given much more is required. (Lk. 12:48) Unfortunately, too many have forgotten, are unaware, or would just rather ignore the presence and role of God in our lives and would have us shut Him out. Let us not be so foolish to think that we do not need Divine assistance. Benjamin Franklin, who by all accounts was not a particularly religious man and a deist, said the following while addressing George Washington, the President of the Constitutional Convention, in Philadelphia in 1787: “I have lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this truth: that God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an empire can rise without his aid? . . . I therefore beg leave to move — that henceforth prayers imploring the assistance of Heaven, and its blessings on our deliberations, be held in this Assembly every morning before we proceed to business, and that one or more of the Clergy of this City be requested to officiate in that Service.” Knowing, too, what Franklin knew, let us pray once again for God’s blessings and guidance upon the USA.

God our Father, Giver of life, we entrust the United States of America to your loving care.

You are the rock on which this nation was founded. You alone are the true source of our cherished rights

to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Send your Spirit to touch the hearts of our nation´s leaders. Open their minds to the great worth of human life

and the responsibilities that accompany human freedom. Remind your people that true happiness is rooted in

seeking and doing your will.

Reclaim this land for your glory and dwell among your people. Give us the grace and humility to know what is not right with America. Give us the gift of your Holy Spirit for the moral and spiritual renewal

we need to meet the problems that we face. Through the intercession of Mary Immaculate, Patroness of our land,

bless us and guide us always and increase our respect for all life. We ask this through Christ Our Lord. Amen.

4th of July Holiday Schedules - Please note that the parish office will be closed on both Monday and Tuesday, July 3 & 4 for the Independence Day Holiday. We will follow the regular summer liturgical schedule on July 3 (Masses at 6:30 & Noon). However, on the 4th there will be one Mass at 9:00 a.m. in the Lower Basilica. There will be no scheduled con-fessions or Adoration on July 4th.

Welcome Back, Sr. Andrea! - I am very pleased to announce that Sr. Andrea Ciszewski, FSSJ, the former principal of St. Stanislaus School and current Superintendent of Catholic Schools for the Diocese of Springfield, has agreed to assist us in giving leadership and direction to our Religious Education Program. She will be the Assistant to the Moderator of the program, Fr. Michael. As such she will oversee the program including our volunteer catechists and aides, the curric-ulum and instruction, and of course most importantly, the students, and be of assistance to their parents as well. She will also gradually become involved in our Ministry of Care outreach, especially the Bereavement aspect. Sr. Andrea feels that she can help us out while she continues her full time job for the Diocese. In many ways Sister has been an ongoing presence in the parish and I am very grateful that she is willing to share her gifts and talents with the parish yet once again.

Mass and Picnic that the parish will host on Sunday, August 27th beginning with Mass at 12:00 Noon in Szot Park. Like last year, there will be no charge to attend and all of the food, beverages and games will be FREE. Likewise, Piotr and Ela Soja, this year’s Chairpersons along with the Picnic Committee are planning to have plenty of activities for the youngest as well as those of us who have a few more years under our belts. If you would like to volunteer to help make this year's event another great success please contact Peter and Ela at (413) 329-7531 or [email protected]. You can also fill out the Volunteer Form on page 3. In order to plan adequately, for food in particular, we ask that you please fill out the reservation form at the bottom of the flyer on page 8 of the bulletin. Your response by August 13th will help the committee greatly. I hope that everyone will join us and whisper a little prayer for favorable weather!

Your Maintenance & Repairs Dollars at Work - Your support of the monthly M & R collections helps us keep our buildings and property in good condition. Recently we have made repairs to the Parish Office roof as well as some pre-ventive repairs to the Friary roof. The roof work totaled about $1,000. With the help of parishioner Marian Zielinski we were able to make needed repairs to the air conditioning in the Basilica. You may recall that we limped through the end of last summer with just one of the units working. Now both are back up and running. We are continuing the full evalu-ation of these systems as we go forward. I am very grateful to Marian and his son Mariusz for helping us keep these costs down. These repairs, without labor costs, have been about $3,000. Our guys have also been busy with some paint-ing projects at the friary including the handrails and window sills that were peeling badly. The big ticket items are yet to come, including the front steps. More on that in future updates.

Final Thoughts - July 4th is usually a pretty good indicator for the pennant races. Yet in recent years, about half the teams in first place on the Fourth do not finish there. I hope everyone has a great Independence Day. May God Bless America and may America give thanks to God. - Fr. Joe

100TH JUBILEE YEAR OF FATIMA (1917-2017) - Our Lady of Fatima Parish, 438 Winsor St., Ludlow, MA will hold Special Masses at the Shrine at 7:00 p.m. on July 13 and August 13. On Thursday, July 13th all of the Chicopee Parishes in particular are being asked to come and pray that evening. The Rosary will be prayed at 6:00 p.m. followed by Mass at 7:00 p.m. Fr. James McCurry, OFM Conv. will be the homilist for the Mass. All parishion-ers are encouraged to attend and celebrate the 100th Anniversary of Our Lady’s appearances at Fatima. In addition, on September 3 the monthly Special Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. The conclusion of the six month celebration will begin on October 12 at 7:00 p.m. with Mass and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament until October 13th at 5:00 p.m. at which time the Rosary will be prayed, Blessing of Sick at 5:30 p.m., 6:00 p.m. Prelude, 7:00 p.m. Mass followed by Can-dle Light Procession and Farewell, Adeus de Fatima.

FIRST FRIDAY ADORATION - Friday, July 7, is the first Friday of the month, our day to pray in reparation for sin, both personal and communal. Our day of prayer begins after the 6:30 a.m. Mass with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament and concludes with Mass celebrated in Polish at 7:00 p.m. Please plan to spend some time in prayer and reflection before our Eucharistic Lord. THE EVANGELIZATION COMMITTEE met on Monday, June 19th. The group discussed our Ministry Fair and commented on the great displays that the organizations presented at the event. Thanks to the Holy Name Society and the San Damiano group for hosting the Ham & Bean Supper and the Pancake Breakfast. Both were enjoyed by all who par-ticipated! Close to 200 of our Parishioners attended the Fair and a number of the Ministries were encouraged by the level of interest and sign-ups that occurred. The Committee brainstormed ways to increase attendance the next time that the Ministry Fair is held. We will be reaching out to thank all of the representatives of the Ministries and asking them direct-ly for feedback on what did and didn't work, in addition to how we can improve. While the connection to the message of Pentecost Sunday is ideal, given the number of celebrations in May and June, we may try the Fall next time. All agreed that in the meantime, we will have a focus on specific Ministries in the Bulletin, the Vestibule of the Basilica and Repre-sentatives who will speak to the work of each Ministry on a rotating basis. The Committee also hopes to collect stories on the impact that the Ministries have made both on those who join and those who benefit. The Subgroup on Liturgy & Spiritual Life will be meeting in the Fall to plan for the season of Advent. Our Welcoming Committee is focused on finding more Greeters for each Mass. Watch for more information on ways that you can help with this important work to welcome everyone to our Parish. In addition to a specific focus on the families of those who are newly Baptized, we will be introducing "Welcome Dinners" for new Parishioners. The Committee also discussed next steps for our updated Par-ish Information Booklet and ways to ask our Parish Family to share their creative talents. Our next meeting will be planned for September.

Po nawróceniu św. Franciszek z Asyżu publicznie, w obecności doprowadzonego do furii ojca, uroczyście zerwał z dawnym życiem. W akcie wyzbycia się wszystkiego i całkowitej rezygnacji ze wszelkich dóbr rozebrał się do naga.

Ktoś, kto decyduje się poświęcić życie Jezusowi, a nie potrafi zerwać z przeszłością, nie będzie dobrym uczniem. Jezus posuwa się nawet do tego, że zniechęca człowieka, który chce iść za nim. Pokazuje, jak wielu rzeczy musi się wyrzec.

Karol de Foucauld mówi o swoim nawróceniu: „Gdy tylko uwierzyłem, że jest Bóg, zrozumiałem natychmiast, że nie mogę zrobić inaczej, jak tylko żyć wyłącznie dla Niego. Moje powołanie zrodziło się w tej samej godzinie co wiara” . (ks. Eugeniusz Burzyk)

DOZYNSKI FESTIVAL - Immaculate Conception Church will be holding their 37th Annual Polish-American Dozynski Festival from Noon to 11:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 15, and from 1:00 to 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 16. A Polka Mass will be celebrated at 4:15 on Saturday with music provided by Dennis Polisky & The Maestro’s Men, who will also play from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. The Janoski Band will perform from 7:00 to 11:00 p.m. Eddie Forman will perform on Sunday from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. and ToMy Band from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. Polish - Ameri-can food will be available for purchase.
