Dear Student,
Welcome to the English Discoveries Student Workbook Basic 1.This workbook is especially for you! It will help you use, practice and progress in English.
Each unit of the workbook corresponds directly to a unit in the English Discoveries Basic 1 course. You should use this workbook together with the course. For example, after you do the Listening
section from the course, we recommend you do the Listening section in the workbook. Your workbook
also contains copies of the Explore texts from the English Discoveries course, so you can refer to its
content when you are away from the computer.
Each unit in the workbook has four sections: Listening, Reading, Speaking and Grammar. The Listening section will help you practice your listening skills. A variety of genres such as voice
mail messages, radio programs and TV video clips are included.
The Reading section will reinforce your understanding of different kinds of reading texts such as
postcards, ads, stories and newspaper articles.
The Speaking section will give you the opportunity to practice different speaking functions such as
ordering a meal in a restaurant, asking for directions, making suggestions, etc.
The Grammar section will help you practice the main points of the online unit within the context of
the unit theme. This way you will learn to use grammar structures in real-life situations.
Special emphasis has been given throughout the workbook to speaking and writing activities and youwill see that you have a lot of opportunity to express yourself in both spoken and written English.
We hope you enjoy using this program and wish you lots of luck! The English Discoveries Team
