BASIC PARTS OF A SENTENCE

SUBJECT ( simple subject) Who or What is doing the main action in a sentence or showing a state of beingInsects all over the world are fascinating.

IDENTIFY THE SUBJECT

Tales are important in Pueblo cultures. Collectors pay thousands of dollars for antique cars.

Elizabeth is happy.

VERB (simple predicate) What the subject is doing or being.

Many parents tell their children stories.

IDENTIFY THE VERB

John is happy today.His brother helped him with the homework.

He served the King for 12 years.

DIRECT OBJECT NOUN or PRONOUN that is the receiver of the action. Answers the question WHAT or WHOM.

The diver found a shipwreck.

IDENTIFY THE DIRECT OBJECT (What?)

He ate the grandmother.

Dad read the comics. The musician sang the song.

INDIRECT OBJECT Noun or Pronoun that tells to whom or what an action is performed. Usuallycomes between a verb and direct object.

Dad read his daughter the comics.

IDENTIFY THE INDIRECT OBJECT (to whom?)

The instructor gave them the music.

Amy told her sister a secret. The loud music gave me a headache.

PREDICATE NOUN (subject complements) Noun or noun phrase that describes or identifies the subject

The artist is my uncle.

What is a RUN-ON?

SENTENCE FRAGMENTS A sentence fragment is a part of a sentence that is written as if it were a complete sentence. It is missing a subject, a predicate or both.Tells the story of the Norman victory in England.

RUN-ON SENTENCES A run-on sentence is two or more sentences written as though they were a single sentence.The English lost the historic battle, Duke William of Normandy became their new king.

FRAGMENT? RUN-ON? COMPLETE SENTENCE?

The driver of the speed boat. This car is very dirty we will wash it as soon as John gets home. The alarm rang at six and I decided to get up. For the first time in two years.
