Course: Course NameEffective Period: September 2015BASIC DESIGN

Session 1Sub Title Template (Optional)Students will be able to describe the meaning of elements and principles of design through the creation of 2D objects .

Learning ObjectivesELEMENTS OF DESIGN :

1. LINE2. SHAPE3. FORM4. SPACE5. COLOR6. TEXTURE7. VALUEContentsA point in motion, having only one dimension and length.

Differences in the type, orientation and quality of lines can be used to suggest a variety of ideas, states, or moods.

Line has physical characteristic : vertical, horizontal, diagonal, straight, curved, thick, thin, faint, bold)

LINE

LINE IN INTERIORThe outline of an image produced by the use of line, value, color or texture.

Specific surface configuration of a plane, figure or object.

There are 2 types of shapes : geometric shapes and organic shapes.

SHAPE A total three dimensional whole such as an object, geometric solid, sculpture, product, structure architecture etc.

VOLUME A three dimensional forms that has length, width & depth.

FORM Four characteristics of color are hue (name), value (lightness or darkness), intensity (amount of pigment), and temperature (warm and cool).

COLORThe feel, appearance, thickness, or stickiness of a surface or substance. We can make a trick to the eye into seeing three-dimensional materials on a two-dimensional surface (illusory texture).

TEXTURE

Textures application :There are 2 types of texture : Tactile texture :This refers to how the art surface physically feels. Rough, smooth, bumpy, scratchy etc. Tactile texture also refers to 3D artwork, where the surface of a clay sculpture can be scratched, poked, or pressed to give the actual surface a texture rich quality.

Visual texture :This refers to an implied texture. The surface of the actual artwork remains smooth, but the image on that smooth surface may look bumpy, rough, scratchy, velvety etc. A good example of this type of texture would be a photograph taken of tree bark. The photograph surfaceitselfis glossy and smooth, but the visual image appears to have a rough, bark texture. The distance or area between or around things. Separates or unifies highlights and gives the eye a visual rest.2D art takes place of a flat surface. The element of space allows you to take that 2D surface and give it the illusion of a third dimension.

SPACESPACE CAN CREATE :

ILLUSION.SHADING (DEPTH)PERSPECTIVE.

The darkness or lightness of an area. Value separates, suggests mood, adds drama and creates the illusion of depth.
