This (HIND) and Family may result in an undercount of the number of families/households in the $1,500 - $1,999publication presents counts for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians from the Income (FINF) range and a balancing over count in the $2,000 range. Population estimates of the Indigenous population based these ranges. on the 2001 Census are also included. For comprehensive information on the quality of Indigenous census data, see Population Issues, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander 43. The calculation of median income is based on imputations made from the Survey ofAustralians (Cat. No. 4708.0). Income and Housing Costs, and as such is subject to sampling error. This is particularly

evident if the median falls into the highest income range, where the quoted median is a 36. Each stage of the Census is subject to stringent quality assurance measures. However, proxy only and should be regarded with caution.in a census there are recognised sources of error which may survive in the data produced. These include undercounting, processing and respondent error. Some of these are 44. Further information on data quality will be provided progressively in Census Updatesovercome or 'repaired' during processing. The effect of those that remain is generally slight, and in the 2001 Census fact sheets and working papers.although they may be more important for small groups in the population such as theIndigenous population. The primary forms of error to keep in mind are:

Partial 37. In some cases where an answer was not provided to a question an answer wasnon-response imputed or derived (often from other information on the form). In other cases a 'not stated'

code was allocated.

Processing error 38. While such errors can occur in any processing system, quality management is used to continuously improve the quality of processed data, and to identify and correct data ofunacceptable quality.

Random 39. Cells containing small values are randomly adjusted to avoid releasing informationAdjustment about particular individuals, families or households. The effect of random adjustment is

statistically insignificant.

Respondent error 40. Processing procedures cannot detect or repair all errors made by persons incompleting the form, therefore some may remain in final data.

Undercount 41. Although the Census aims to count each person once, there are some people who aremissed and others who are counted more than once. A post enumeration survey isconducted soon after the Census to measure the undercount.
