About the role

Funded through Creative Scotland’s Youth Music Initiative, Goldsmith’s Foundation and the Scottish Prison Service, COCO music project is delivered within Polmont Young Offenders Institute (PYOI). This is Scotland’s only facility for young men aged 16-21 who have committed an offence/s. COCO allows young people to engage in music making activity which is not currently available within PYOI.

The acronym COCO stands for Custody and Order & Care and Opportunity.

This project has been designed to support a comprehensive programme of opportunity delivered within Polmont, with the aim of inspiring young people to think about alternative routes for rehabilitation, and reducing their likelihood of reoffending in future.

Creativity, celebration and outcomes are central to the project. Young people are at the centre of decision making in terms of programme design and activity. Following consultation with young people, Impact Arts in partnership with Barnardo’s and Scottish Prison Service will deliver 2 x 9 week blocks of music making projects with a focus on:

1. Developing young people’s existing performance skills via an established in-house rock / pop band

2. Developing new performance skills with young people, increasing potential to join / form bands, working towards live performance

3. Developing electronic music / DJ / sampling / spoken word techniques with groups of young people

4. Developing new skills for young people and the wider staff team in music performance and production- including live mix in Polmont’s dedicated performance space, and recording studio techniques

5. Facilitating live performances by young people in Polmont’s Creative Space for friends, family, and other young people in PYOI

6. Facilitating programmed performances by visiting performers to inspire young people

The role requires a confident individual with significant experience of working with young people through music and performance. Specific experience of working within youth justice / prison settings would be a distinct advantage. Applications are welcomed from musicians with experience in youth work across a variety of settings, however a clear knowledge and understanding of youth justice and prison work will be required at interview stage as part of a frank discussion about expectations, training & support requirements, and procedural issues- including a number of non-negotiables given the secure delivery setting.
