Last season, the Cortland baseball team made its 18th straight NCAA Division III playoff appearance, culminating with a second-place national finish after reaching the title game at the World Series in Appleton, Wis. The Red Dragons posted an overall record of 40-10-1, the fourth time in the last six seasons that the program has won 40 or more games. Twelfth-year head coach Joe Brown, who has an 11-year record of 402-112-2, became the career wins leader during 2010, surpassing Bob Wallace’s 366 victories.

In 2011, Brown has again put together a challenging schedule designed to prepare the team for postseason play. Cortland, which is ranked second in

the 2011 Collegiate Baseball Newspaper Division III preseason poll, has 15 games against 11 teams that qualified for the NCAA playoffs last season.

The Red Dragons return many of their top arms this spring. Senior Travis Ratliff earned first team all-region and second team All-SUNYAC honors and was selected to the NCAA Division III Regional All-Tournament Team after posting a 9-1 record with a 4.64 ERA and 70 strikeouts in 12 starts as a junior. Senior Scott Hartling appeared in 12 games with seven starts. He went 4-1 with a 4.59 ERA and 32 strikeouts. Senior Mike Assmann was second on the team in wins last season, joining Ratliff on the regional all-tournament team. He posted a 7-5 record in 14 appearances, including 12 starts, and fanned 62 batters in a team-high 72.2 innings. Senior Michael Mahay went 3-1 with one save, a 4.32 ERA and 27 strikeouts in 16 appearances.

Senior Kris Gentzke, who also plays the outfield, went 2-0 with a 4.70 ERA and 23 strikeouts in nine appearances, including four starts. Junior Brendan Hourihan tied for the team lead with 20 appearances in 2010, posting a 6-0 record with one save, a 3.47 ERA and 30 strikeouts. Sophomore Todd DeGroat pitched in 11 games as a freshman, striking out 13 batters and recording a 3.86 ERA. Sophomore Rich Morris struck out nine batters in 12 appearances and posted a 4.61 ERA last season. Senior

Vinny Cuviello and sophomores A.J. Valentino, Cody Crego and Greg Leger combined to pitch in 11 games in 2010.

Ten new pitchers join the roster in 2011 – juniors Peter Lompado and Tom Nagy, sophomores Zachary Badanes, John Molloy, Aaron Schuldt and Tyler Scott and freshmen Steve Komanecky, Brandon McClain, Corey Upright and James Wegge.

Senior Justin Fredenburg takes over as Cortland’s top returning catcher in 2011. Fredenburg saw action in 29 games with 23 starts and batted .278 with 21 runs, five doubles, a home run and 14 RBI. Senior Billy Ribeiro, who will see action predominantly at

first base, played in 33 games with eight starts, belting two homers and driving in seven runs. Junior Rob Andrews collected two RBI in 16 games with five starts. Three freshmen catchers, Jamie Butler, Tim Panetta and P.J Rinaldi, join the roster this spring.

Junior second baseman Matt June is one of five returning infielders in 2011. June earned first team all-region and All-SUNYAC honors and was named to the NCAA Division III World Series All-Tournament Team after batting .414 with a team-best 66 runs, 12 doubles, two triples, two homers and 33 RBI in 50 games. June also tied for the team lead with 32 walks and hit in 22 straight games during the season. Senior corner infielder Alex Coffey saw action in 36 games with 14 starts, batting .350 with 12 runs, five doubles, one homer and 14 RBI. He owns a .357 career average entering 2011.

Senior first baseman Dan Kaplan made the most of his 33 at bats in 2010. Kaplan batted .424 with nine runs, two doubles, a home run and nine RBI in 22 games. Sophomore middle infielder Bryan Mistretta appeared in 15 games with five starts and batted .250 on the season. Sophomore third baseman Anthony Brevetti was a member of the program in 2010 but missed the season due to injury.

Infielders new to the program this spring are juniors Nick Thode and Daniel Zambito, sophomore John Adornetto and freshmen James Quinn and Max Rosing.

The battle for playing time in the outfield is wide open after the Red Dragons lost all three starters from the 2010 team. Gentzke is a leading candidate for one of the spots after batting .297 with 14 runs, three doubles, one triple, two homers and 14 RBI in 31 games last season. Junior Andrew Pezzuto is moving to the outfield after missing the entire 2010 season due to injury. He started 42 games in the infield as a freshman, batting .282 with 22 runs, eight doubles, one triple, one home run, 24 RBI and 10 stolen bases.

Sophomores Matt Wild and Jeff Wiltsie saw action in 29 and 16 games, respectively, as freshmen. Wild appeared often as a pinch runner, scoring 13 runs during the season. Wiltsie batted .176 and drove in three runs in limited at bats. Sophomore Chris Jackson was a member of the program in 2010 but did not participate in game action.

Newcomers in the outfield are sophomore Zack Graczyk and freshmen Kyle Anderson and Adam Smith.

Season Preview

Junior Andrew Pezzuto, who missed the 2010 season due to injury, moves to the outfield after starting 42 games as a middle infielder in 2009.

Senior outfielder/pitcher Kris Gentzke batted .297 in 31 games and also posted a 2-0 record on the mound in 2010.

Senior first baseman Dan Kaplan batted .424 and drove in nine runs in just 33 at bats last season.

Junior pitcher Brendan Hourihan tied for the team lead with 20 appearances and posted a 6-0 record in 2010.

Joe BrownHead Coach

Joe Brown has led Cortland to a combined 402-112-1 record, 11 NCAA Division III tournament appearances, six World Series showings and nine State University of New York Athletic Confer-ence (SUNYAC) titles in his first 11 seasons as the Red Dragons’ head coach. His overall winning percentage of .781 ranks first nationally in Division III among active coaches with at least five years experience.

In 2010, Brown led Cortland to a 40-10-1 record and a second-place national finish at the NCAA Division III World Series. The national runner-up showing was Cortland’s second, both under Brown, with the first coming in 2005. He guided the Red Dragons to their fourth 40-win season and 10th campaign with at least 30 victories in 11 years. Cortland qualified for the Division III playoffs for the 18th straight season, the longest active streak nationally.

In 2009, Brown led Cortland to a 31-14 mark. The Red Dragons won their fifth straight SUNYAC title and qualified for the NCAA Division III playoffs. In 2008, Brown’s team enjoyed a 42-5 record that featured a school-record 38-game winning streak. Cortland won the NCAA New York Regional title and tied for seventh place at the World Series. In 2007, Brown guided Cort-land to a 42-7 record and a fourth-place national finish with a 2-2 mark at the World Series. His 2005 squad enjoyed the best season in school history with a 43-9-1 record and a national second-place finish. His 2000 and 2001 squads also won NCAA New York Regional titles and tied for fifth nation-ally each year. His 2003 and 2006 teams each tied for ninth nationally and his 2002 and 2004 teams both tied for 17th.

In 2000, he had the best season of any Cortland first-year head base-ball coach, leading the Red Dragons to a 36-9 record, an NCAA Division III New York Region title and a tie for fifth place at the World Series. In 2001, his squad finished 34-11, winning a regional title and once again tying for fifth nationally at the World Series. In 2002, Cortland finished the season 31-11 and participated in the NCAA Division III regionals. In 2003, the Red Dragons were 35-11, advanced to the championship game of the NCAA regionals and finished tied for ninth nationally. In 2004, the Red Dragons finished 29-16 and earned one of three national “Pool C” at-large tourna-ment berths. In 2006, Cortland posted a 39-9 record, won the SUNYAC championship and advanced to the NCAA regional finals.

Brown has been named the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) New York Region “Coach of the Year” six times (2000, 2001, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2010) and the SUNYAC “Coach of the Year” on four occa-sions (2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008). He was also the inaugural winner of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Upstate New York Division III Coach of the Year award in 2009. Seventeen of his players have been chosen as All-Americans, including six who were selected in the profes-sional baseball draft. In all, 15 of Brown’s players have advanced to play professionally, including two selections in the 2006 draft, one in 2007 and one in 2009.

Prior to his promotion to head coach, Brown was the top assistant coach and pitching coach for Cortland teams that made seven straight NCAA Division III tournament appearances from 1993 to 1999 and four World Series showings between 1995 and 1999.

Born in Clifton Springs, N.Y., and raised in Maine, Brown moved back to New York and graduated as a three-sport letterwinner from Canandaigua Academy in 1986. He was inducted into the Canandaigua Academy Sports Hall of Fame in the fall of 2006. A 1990 graduate of Ithaca College, Brown earned a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education. He played four years of baseball for the Bombers and was a member of the school’s 1988 NCAA Division III championship squad. Upon graduation from Ithaca, he served for one season as adjunct faculty instructor and assistant baseball coach at Finger Lakes Community College in Canandaigua, N.Y. About SuNY CortlandLocated atop one of the rolling hills in central New York’s “City of Seven Valleys,” the State University of New York College at Cortland was founded in 1868 as the Cortland Normal School, which included among its earliest students inventor and industrialist Elmer A. Sperry of Sperry-Rand Corp. fame.

Over the decades, the campus expanded and in 1941, by an act of legislature and the Board of Regents, the institution officially became a four-year college providing courses leading to the bachelor’s degree. In 1948, Cortland was a founding member of the State University of New York. Today, approximately 7,500 students are pursuing degrees within the College’s three academic divisions — arts and sciences, professional studies and the school of education. Twenty-three departments with a faculty of more than 400 offer the SUNY Cortland student body 70 majors and 44 minors from which to choose. The College’s main campus covers 191 acres and includes 31 traditional and modern buildings. Fifteen of these structures are residence halls providing on-campus housing for approximately 3,000 students. Cortland also operates its Outdoor Education Center at Raquette Lake in the Adirondacks, the Hoxie Gorge Nature Preserve outside Cortland, and the Brauer Education Center on the Helderberg Escarpment near Albany. At Cortland, athletics are viewed as having an important role in the educational mission of the College. During the fall, winter and spring seasons, Cortland participates in 25 intercollegiate sports — 14 women’s and 11 men’s — in an attempt to provide a broad program which meets the needs, interests and abilities of its students.

The Cortland athletic program placed 17th nationally out of approximately 440 colleges and universities in the 2009-10 all-sport Learfield Sports Directors’ Cup Division III standings. Cortland is the only New York school and one of only six nationwide to finish in the top 20 each of the last 15 years. Since 1989, the Red Dragons have captured 15 NCAA Division III team titles.

The College offers its student-athletes excellent athletic facilities. The newly-constructed on -campus stadium features two artificial turf fields. One field seats 6,500 spectators, the other 1,500. The Cortland football, field hockey, men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s lacrosse and men’s and women’s track and field teams are among those who utilize the facility, which the New York Times called “...a new stadium worthy of a major university power.”

The Bessie L. Park Physical Education and Recreation Center, opened in 1973, features the Whitney T. Corey Gymnasium with a 3,500 seating capacity; the Olympic-sized Harriet Holsten swimming pool with gallery seating for 1,500; the Alumni Ice Arena, a facility which can accommodate 2,500 spectators; a 500-seat gymnastics arena, racquetball and squash courts, a wrestling room, modern athletic training facilities and the state-of-the-art Francis Woods Fitness Facility.

Nearby Clayton R. Lusk Field House, with its tartan-textured surface, is home for the indoor track teams, varsity practice sessions and recreational activities. Cortland’s soccer teams play on T. Fred “Prof” Holloway Field, which has lights for night contests and newly installed bleachers. The College also has 22 outdoor tennis courts and two outdoor basketball courts and boasts Robert H. Wallace Field (baseball) and Dragon Field (softball) as part of its 51 acres of athletic fields.
