In its season preview content, D1Baseball.com announced some key honors for several members of the Grand Canyon baseball program.Highlighting the recognition was a WAC Player of the Year pick for Garrison Schwartz, and high draft rankings for Tom Lerouge, Austin Bull, Jake Wong and others.

Also earning mention in the publication’s preview was “crafty lefty” Jake Repavich and “fire hydrant outfielder” Preston Pavlica.Shotgun Spratling labeled Grand Canyon a “team to keep an eye on” and spelled out the ideal scenario for GCU’s season: “Ideally this season would be a precursor that helps lead Grand Canyon to a regional host in their new digs next year.”

A RE-SHAPED INFIELD

The Lopes certainly have confidence in their personnel in the infield. Why wouldn’t they with two returning All-WAC selections? However, that personnel will assume new positions in the infield in 2017.

» Zach Malis is set to make the move from corner-to-corner, taking over the hot corner after a successful year at first base.

» Austin Bull will have big shoes to fill in the middle infield, taking over for a four-year anchor at shortstop in Paul Panaccione.

» Ian Evans, Greg Saenz, Tyler Wyatt and Marc Mumper will lead the charge on the newly-vacated right side of the infield.

2016 REVIEW » With a number of big-ticket offseason acquisitions including Zack Greinke, Shelby Mill-er and Jean Segura, the D-backs entered the spring as a trendy NL West Champion pick.

» Things went awry for the club in a hurry, however, with A.J. Pollock lost for the season to injury and a number of underwhelming performances from the team’s stars.

» Any outside chance of making a late playoff push was negated by an ugly 7-17 record in the month of July. Arizona didn’t post a winning record in any month all year.

» Jake Lamb and Paul Goldschmidt led an offensive charge that ranked 10th in baseball in runs scored (752).

» New acquisitions Greinke and Miller underperformed with 4.37 and 6.15 ERAs, respectively.

» Arizona parted ways with manager Chip Hale and general manager Dave Stewart following the season.

2017 OUTLOOK » A new regime takes over in Phoenix with Mike Hazen taking over at general manager and Torey Lovullo handling the managerial duties. Both come from recent positions with the Boston Red Sox.

» While last offseason made headlines, this offseason was focused on smaller tweaks. The D-backs biggest newcomers include Taijuan Walker, Ketel Marte and Chris Ianette (all previously from Seattle) while losing Jean Segura, Wellington Castillo and Daniel Hudson.

» Expectations have been lowered after a disappointing 2016, but the club still has major talent headlined by Greinke, Goldschmidt and Pollock.

SPRING HAS SPRUNG » The meeting marks the unofficial debut of Major League Baseball Spring Training for 2017. Teams will begin Cactus League play a couple of days later.

» Arizona begins Cactus League play on Feb. 25 vs. the Colorado Rockies at Salt River Fields.

CONFERENCE’S YOUNGEST TEAM

With freshmen and sophomores accounting for nearly 70 percent of Grand Canyon’s at bats on the season, the Lopes were far and away the youngest offense in the Western Athletic Conference. By comparison, only 13 percent of New Mexico State’s at bats came from underclassmen, while tournament champion, Utah Valley, had just 30 percent of its at bats come from underclassmen.

THREE OUTS. ONE PLAY.

The Lopes turned one of the rarest plays in the sport in a game vs. New Mexico State on April 11. With runners on the corners and nobody out, a grounder to third base was converted into a 5-4-3-2 triple play. GCU was one of just 14 teams (4.6 percent) to turn a triple play in college baseball last season. Krysthian Leal collected a ground ball near third and threw to Austin Bull at second base to retire the first runner. Bull threw over to Zach Malis at first base to retire the batter. Meanwhile, the runner from third attempted to score, with a throw from Malis to Griffin Barnes at the plate coming in time to complete the play.

STANKIEWICZ EXTENDED THROUGH 2019

In a set of major athletic department announcements on May 27, 2015, Grand Canyon University announced a four-year contract extension for head coach Andy Stankiewicz, just weeks after claiming the 2015 WAC regular season title. “I’m appreciative to what (President) Mueller and his team have done,” Stankiewicz said. “I’m appreciative to Mike Vaught and Keith Baker. When I was offered a contract extension, I was excited about it. 2018 is when we’re postseason eligible, and in 2018 we’re going to make some noise.”Jerry Colangelo, a Valley Sports icon and special advisor to GCU Athletics, further explained the move. “I spent 45 years in professional sports, and I had a habit of tearing up contracts,” Colangelo said. “The reason I did things like that was, I truly believed, that someone did such a job over expectations, they were entitled to more. (Stankiewicz) has done an incredible job at Grand Canyon with the baseball program. It’s a new four-year contract to reward him for a job well done.”Stankiewicz’s old contract originally ran through the 2017 season, but, following the extension, now runs through the 2019 season.

PANACCIONE NABBED BY NATS

Shortstop Paul Panaccione became the highest Grand Canyon positional player to be drafted when he was selected by the Washington Nationals in the 10th Round of the 2016 MLB Draft. In 2001, catcher Tyler Beuerlein went to the New York Mets in the

seventh round. For a complete list of GCU draft picks, visit page xx.Panaccione was a four-year mainstay in the Lopes infield and one of the few remaining players from GCU’s final Division II season. He was the WAC Preseason Player of the Year prior to his senior campaign and ended 2016 on the All-WAC first team. Panaccione posted a top-30 batting average (.376) nationally as a junior and batted .363 and slugged .521 as a senior.

FRESHMEN TAKE HOME WEEKLY HONORS

Last year’s freshmen Preston Pavlica and Zach Malis each took home one WAC Player of the Week award during the 2016 season. Of the 28 weekly awards up for grabs in 2016, Pavlica and Malis were the only two freshmen to garner selections.Pavlica earned the nod for the week of March 1-6. He made the most of his first two career starts, recording seven RBIs on 5-of-8 hitting in a pair of wins over Omaha. Pavlica’s best game came in the series finale, going 3-for-4 with a double and four RBIs.Malis took home the award for April 18-24. He posted three multi-hit games in a three-game sweep at North Dakota. In Game 2, Malis went 2-for-4 with a home run, three runs scored and an RBI. He also drove in three runs in Sunday’s sweep-clinching win.

TYLER WYATT: MR. VERSATILE

Tyler Wyatt was listed in the program as a right-handed pitcher and an infielder last season. He proved that he was capable of fulfilling both roles in 2016. Wyatt was one of only two players in the WAC (Max Carter, CSU Bakersfield) to log at least 50.0 innings on the mound and record over 100 at bats. Wyatt will drop the pitching in 2017 and hone in his focus on his offense and fielding.

The best representation of his success in his variety of roles came in GCU’s series at North Dakota. Wyatt went 7-for-13 (.538) from the plate in the series with four RBIs. Meanwhile, he also posted his best starting pitching performance in Game 2, tossing 8.0 scoreless innings before allowing two to score in the ninth.

ENTER: COACH RICH DORMAN

With the departure of pitching coach Nathan Choate, Rich Dorman comes to Grand Canyon, most recently from the Seattle Mariners organization. While with the M’s, eight players (to date) have reached the major leagues including current Arizona Diamondback, Taijuan Walker, and James Paxton. Walker will throw out the ceremonial first pitch on the Lopes’ Opening Day on Feb. 17. In his time in the minor

leagues, his pitching staffs consistently ranked among the league leaders, highlighted by a Northwest League-leading 3.22 staff ERA with the Everett AquaSox in 2010.

VORHOF’S EARLY-SEASON ROLL

Right-hander Mick Vorhof began the 2016 campaign with 6.2 scoreless innings of work in his first six appearances. More impressively, Vorhof recorded all three of his saves on the season in his first five appearances. He earned saves in a win over Gonzaga on opening weekend, a defeat of Central Michigan in the GCU Classic opener and against San Francisco in Santa Clara.

LEROUGE’S KNACK FOR THE CLUTCH

In an all-around impressive sophomore campaign, Tom Lerouge exhibited his ability to come up with the clutch base hit when needed on multiple occasions throughout the year. In a span of two weeks, Lerouge managed three game-winning hits.First, Lerouge uncorked a walk-off double in a March 13 contest against Cal Poly to claim the rubber game and the series for GCU.

In Las Vegas on March 22, Lerouge broke a ninth-inning tie with a go-ahead single down the left field line as GCU went on to defeat UNLV.Back home two days later, Lerouge popped the top on conference play by delivering a walk-off single in the 11th inning as the Lopes downed Utah Valley.

TRIAL BY FIRE

Cast into action with no collegiate game experience under their belts, 2016 freshmen Austin Bull and Preston Pavlica made the most of their early-season action.Infielder Austin Bull burst on to the scene over the course of the GCU Tournament in his second and third career starts. In a two-game span vs. Central Michigan and Saint Mary’s, Bull went 6-for-7 with two doubles and two runs scored. One week later, outfielder Preston Pavlica earned his first two career starts in the Lopes’ series vs. Omaha. He went 5-for-8 with seven RBIs, earning WAC Player of the Week honors.

TAKING TO THE ROAD

In contrast to the past two seasons at GCU, the Lopes will play 31 of their 55 games away from Brazell Stadium in 2017. Grand Canyon has its most away games in a season since 2014, the Lopes’ return season to Division I. Some of GCU’s competition on the road will be fierce, including trips to Arizona (Pac-12), Arkansas (SEC), along with Pepperdine and reigning WCC Champion Saint Mary’s.

NAILBITERS OPEN WAC PLAY

The first six conference home games in 2016 were not for the faint of heart, as the six games were separated by a grand total of eight runs. WAC play opened with back-to-back extra-inning affairs against Utah Valley. Unfortunately for Grand Canyon, five of the six games to open conference play at home fell in the favor of the opponent.

MALIS MAKES HIS MARK

While infielder Zach Malis made just four starts in the first month of the season, he solidified his role as a starter with Grand Canyon after a breakout series at CSU Bakersfield. Malis started all three games, and ended the series with an exclamation mark, going 2-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs. At the time, Malis was one of just four Lopes to post four-RBI performances on the year. The following day back in Phoenix, Malis slugged his first career home run against UNLV.

PITCHING STAFF IMPROVES FOR WAC PLAY

After the pitching staff struggled during non-conference play, the Lopes got things figured out by the time of conference play. While Grand Canyon’s overall ERA ranked fifth in the 10-team WAC, its ERA in conference games ranked third.

Infielder Austin Bull finished the season with three four-hit games, most on the Lopes. Bull’s first four-hit game came in just his third career start for Grand Canyon. And when you get on base as frequently as Bull did in 2016, you’re bound to score some runs. In a win over Cal Poly on March 12 in Phoenix, Bull crossed home five times, marking the most individual runs scored by any WAC player in 2016.

PAVLICA’S POWER SHOW

In the Lopes visit to Kansas State, Preston Pavlica used two home runs to left-center field to keep Grand Canyon in the game with the Big 12 opponent. Pavlica’s second and third home runs of his young career came in the second and eighth innings. It was the only multi-homer game of the season for a Grand Canyon batter, and one of just eight by WAC hitters in 2016. Additionally, Pavlica collected a double, bringing his total base count to 10 on the evening, a mark that was only matched once by WAC hitters in 2016 (Miles Lewis, North Dakota, 5/6/2016).

THE FINAL CHAPTER IN NORTH DAKOTA

With the cancellation of the North Dakota baseball program, Grand Canyon had its final trip to Grand Forks, N.D. and final encounter with the Fighting Hawks. GCU finished a perfect 9-0 all-time against North Dakota, with all nine matchups coming in the last three seasons. Additionally, Grand Canyon finished 6-0 in games played in Grand Forks. It goes down as the most

wins without a loss of any road location in GCU Baseball history. The Lopes ended their short-lived series history vs. North Dakota in style last season, sweeping aside the Fighting Hawks. Highlights of the series included a 10-run inning with 16 batters going to the plate, a near complete game shutout from Tyler Wyatt, offensive outbursts from Wyatt and Zach Malis, and three long balls from Malis, Garrison Schwartz and Tom Lerouge.

LOPES IN WAC FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR CONVERSATION

North Dakota’s Miles Lewis put together a late-season run that made him the shoe-in WAC Freshman of the Year for the Fighting Hawks in the program’s farewell season. Throughout the season, many members of GCU’s highly-touted freshman class were in the conversation for the award, and placed highly in the WAC final statistics.

McDONALD EMERGES AS MR. RBI

In a season-long search for offense from the catching position, Grand Canyon found its man late in the season in freshman Jared McDonald. Prior to the Seattle U series that started on April 15, GCU had only 11 hits (11-for-88, .125) from catchers. McDonald earned 12 consecutive starts beginning with the Seattle U series and posted a 12-for-35 (.343) clip, surpassing the previous hit total from the catching position. McDonald finished the year batting .362 (21-for-58) with 19 RBIs in 19 starts.

EXTRA-INNING AFFAIR CUT SHORT IN LAWRENCE

The 2016 season marked the third straight year that Grand Canyon and Kansas met on the diamond, with the series set to reach a fourth straight year in 2017. Entering April’s matchup in Lawrence, Kansas, the series was tied at four games apiece. Due to lightning, the series remained tied at 4-4-1 with the

Lopes and Jayhawks suspending the game in the 10th inning due to lightning. After surrendering the lead in the ninth to Kansas, GCU looked poised for an extra-inning lead with runners on second and third and no outs. However, after a 70-minute delay, the game was suspended and forced to end in a tie.

LEROUGE’S CASE FOR ALL-WAC SELECTION

With so many talented student-athletes competing in the Western Athletic Conference, there are going to be deserving players left out of All-Conference voting. Lerouge was certainly one of those players who fell on tough luck when the teams were announced. Below are Lerouge’s conference numbers, where they ranked among the WAC leaderboards, and how many All-WAC selections Lerouge’s particular statistic ranked in front of.

MEYER RETURNS TO THE FIELD

After sitting out the 2016 campaign with injury, redshirt junior Josh Meyer hopes to return to health and the field during the upcoming season. During GCU’s WAC championship season in 2015, Meyer made 19 starts, contributing a two-hit game in the Lopes’ upset of No. 21 Texas Tech. As a freshman, Meyer burst onto the scene with a .276 average (27-for-98), committing just one error behind the plate. He

chipped in 10 multi-hit efforts and five multi-RBI games.

THE END OF THE BEGINNING

It’s here. Four years nearing completion. Grand Canyon University Athletics is nearing final completion of the mandated four-year transition process as the department jumps to full Division I status. While the baseball program previously competed at the Division I level in the 1990s, this time around, all 21 sports at GCU are making the jump.

You’ve heard the disclaimer time and time again over the last four years, but amid the current transition, the Lopes are ineligible for participation in the WAC Tournament and the NCAA Tournament. There, you’ve heard it for the last time.Beginning in the 2017-18 year, pending a final stamp of approval from the NCAA, Grand Canyon will participate as a full-fledged member of NCAA Division I athletics, making it eligible for the WAC Tournament and NCAA Tournament in all sports.

CONFERENCE EXPANDING

While it will take about a year and a half to see the move in effect, the WAC announced the addition of California Baptist University to the conference on January 13, 2017. The Lancers will begin competition in 15 WAC-sanctioned sports in the 2018-19 academic year. The university continues a meteoric rise which will see it begin the transition to Division I after just five years at the Division II level. In baseball, like many of its sports, CBU has found recent success at the Division II level. However, Grand Canyon holds a 65-12-1 all-time lead in the series with the Lancers that dates all the way back to the 1967 season. As the conference sits today, the addition of California Baptist will bring the WAC up to 10 baseball schools (restoring the loss of North Dakota in 2016) and nine full members.

BALLPARK LAYOUT The 2017 campaign marks the farewell season of Brazell Stadium as it is known today. The ballpark has existed in its current location since prior to the 1962 season, moving to its location on the west side of campus after originally being more centrally located. While the future home of GCU Baseball will sit on the foot-print of the current ballpark, the facility will get a major facelift at the conclusion of the season.Through the years, numerous upgrades have been made to Brazell Stadium to make it, as The Arizona Republic called it in 2014, “a hidden baseball gem in the Valley.”Brazell Stadium is named after Dr. Dave Brazell, the founder and developer of Grand Canyon Baseball. Brazell coached the Lopes for 28 seasons, compiling a record of 728-385-5.

Andy Stankiewicz begins his sixth season at the helm of Grand Canyon’s baseball program for the 2017 season after becoming the fourth head coach in the history of the program prior to the 2012 campaign.

After a pair of successful seasons at the Division II level in 2012 and 2013, Stankiewicz has guided the GCU baseball program amid a transition to the Division I level. The transition has brought with it unprecedented success, as the Lopes claimed the Western Athletic Conference Regular Season Championship in the 2015 season – just the second year of transition. In that championship season, Grand Canyon posted a .308 team batting average, a mark that ranked sev-enth in the country. Since Grand Canyon began the reclassification process in 2013, Stankiewicz’s teams rank 28th in Division I in batting average (.294).

In his time as GCU’s head coach, seven Lopes have been selected in the MLB First Year Player’s Draft with a pair of selections coming in the first 10 rounds. Twenty-four Lopes have been named All-Confer-ence in Stankiewicz’s tenure including 15 first team selections.

Under the guidance of Stankiewicz, the Lopes placed second and first in the WAC, respectively, in the first two seasons of the transi-tion to Division I athletics. In 2015, GCU posted a 32-22 overall record and a 19-7 record in conference play. In its return to Division I in 2014, GCU went 30-23 overall. Amid the first three years of transition, the Lopes have recorded marquee wins over Division I contenders Texas Tech, Arizona, Kansas, Tennessee and UC Irvine.

In 2013, Grand Canyon’s final season at the Division II level, Stankiewicz led GCU to its first appearance in the Division II Champi-onship in Cary, N.C. after the squad boasted an impressive 40-19 re-cord. The Lopes won the Division II West Region Championship after earning the No. 4 seed in the tournament. Stankiewicz was named the ABCA/Rawlings Division II West Region Coach of the Year as his team posted its most wins since collecting 43 in 1990. He was also named Pacific West Conference Coach of the Year after GCU earned a share of the conference crown for the first time since joining in 2007.

In his first season as head coach in 2012, Stankiewicz guided the Lopes to a 27-23 overall record as the squad finished eighth in the final West Region poll. The 27 wins marked a six-win improvement from the year before.

Stankiewicz was selected as an assistant coach for USA Baseball’s Collegiate National Team during the summer of 2012. The squad traveled to Cuba and the Netherlands to compete, where it captured the bronze medal. In 2013, he served as an assistant coach for the USA Baseball 2013 17U National Team Development Program.

In the summer of 2014, Stankiewicz served as the manager of the USA Baseball 18U National Team and guided the squad to a gold med-al at the COPABE 18U Pan American Games in La Paz, Mexico. The team went a perfect 12-0 in its summer contests.

Prior to joining GCU, Stankiewicz held the position of minor league field coordinator for the Seattle Mariners. Before his stint with the Mariners, he was a member of the Arizona State baseball coaching staff from 2007 to 2009. He helped guide the Sun Devils to three Pac-10 championships and two appearances in the College World Series.

Stankiewicz also brings to GCU a professional coaching back-ground, having served as manager for the New York Yankees NY-Penn League team in Staten Island. He guided Staten Island to the NY-Penn League championship in 2005 after posting a 52-24 overall record. Stankiewicz’s pitching staff posted a league-best 2.85 ERA in the club’s route to a championship. The team featured five future major leaguers highlighted by outfielder Brett Gardner.

Stankiewicz was drafted by the New York Yankees in the 12th round of the 1986 First-Year Player Draft. He made his Major League debut with the Yankees on April 11, 1992. Stankiewicz played in parts of seven Major League seasons, with the Yankees (1992-93), Houston Astros (1994-95), Montreal Expos (1996-97) and the inaugural sea-son of the Arizona Diamondbacks in 1998.

As a standout infielder at Pepperdine, Stankiewicz ranks in the school’s top 10 in runs scored (172), triples (9), at-bats (755), stolen bases (101) and games played (220).

Stankiewicz was born in Inglewood, Calif. in southeast Los Angeles Country. He attended St. Paul High School in Santa Fe Springs, Calif.
