The Cleverest Person Alive

Do you have a question you want answering? Imagine there was someone who you could go to who did know absolutely everything!

You have found a message, written in a strange language. Imagine you take this message to someone considered the cleverest person alive.

What are they doing when you first meet them? Are they conducting a strange experiment? Are they sitting reading? Are they eating? Perhaps they are on a trampoline or juggling

What do they look like? ( - imagine their clothing, their appearance). Is their behaviour in anyway strange?

How do they speak and what do they say?

Here are some ways you could start:

The Cleverest Person Alive

The first time I met Mr. Dawlish he was sitting with his eyes closed on the top of a ladder in his library.

“We must be quiet,” said his butler, “he doesn’t like to be startled when he is meditating.”

The butler, whose name I later found out was Roberts, approached the ladder and tapped it lightly. Immediately Mr. Dawlish opened his tiny eyes. He looked down at me like an owl peering down from its nest.

“Yes?” he snapped.

“This gentleman wishes to speak to you about a strange parchment,” said Roberts.

Dawlish leapt from the ladder like a tree monkey, his loose jacket billowing out like wings as he dropped. He hit the ground with a light thud.

“Let’s have a look at it boy. Come on, I haven’t got all day!” He said quickly, holding out a thin hand.

Bartlett and The Ice Voyage – Chapter 10

Intro: description of places as a clue to the identity of the person – use of commas.

Closing: read each other’s descriptions

A

Here are three sentences about rooms. One is about James Bond’s room, one about Spiderman’s room and one about a deep sea diver’s room. Which is which?

His room is dark and untidy, it looks as if it has never been cleaned There are no flies.

His room is always very tidy. Nothing is out of place. A gun lies on a table.

There are drips on the floor. There is a tank full of fish. Some flippers stick out from under the bed.

Write one sentence of your own – describe the room of a clown.

Here are some words to help you.

floor bed red nose make up very big shoes baggy trousers chair

custard pies braces joke book circus posters

B/C

Describe the room of a person with an interesting or peculiar job.

For example:

A magician, a deep sea diver, a gladiator, a zoo keeper, Doctor Frankenstein, a Viking, a witch, a vampire slayer, James Bond, Spiderman.

Consider what the floor, walls and ceiling may look like, the windows (is it a dark or light room) what things may be lying around. Think about whether this person is tidy or untidy and describe the room in such a way that makes this clear. What smells are there? What sounds?

Think about how you can improve each sentence by the use of commas and try not to write too many sentences that sound the same.
