PROMOTING GOOD
ATTENDANCE
As a school, we are proud of
our good attendance rates. However, in some
cases we may issue a penalty notice for
unauthorised absence. It is parents’
responsibility and a legal requirement to
ensure that their child attends school regularly
and punctually. Missing school seriously
affects children’s longer-term life
opportunities. Statistics show a direct link
between attendance and attainment.
Holidays will not be authorised during term
time, and are likely to attract a Fixed Penalty
Notice.
If it is essential that if you need to take your
child out of school for any other reason, you
request a leave of absence form through your
House office. The request will be considered
by the Headteacher, and a reply given to you,
indicating whether the request is authorised or
unauthorised.
What are Penalty Notices?
Penalty Notices are a Fixed Penalty
Fine.
Penalty Notices are an alternative to
prosecution for unauthorised school
absence. Parents do not have to attend
court.
When can a Penalty Notice be given in West
Berkshire? This can be issued when a pupil has missed 20
half day sessions from school within a 10
school week period and these absences are
unauthorised.
Or
When a pupil has missed 10 half day sessions
from school within a 10 school week period
and the absences are unauthorised and due to
holiday.
Penalty Notices If you receive a Penalty Notice you have two
options:
Option 1 Pay within the 28 days shown on
the Notice. A Fixed Penalty Fine is
currently £60.
Option 2 Pay between days 29 and 42 a Fixed
Penalty Fine of £120.
Each fine is per parent, per child. All
payments must be made to the address given
on the Penalty Notice.
Non Payment If a Penalty Notice is not paid each parent or
carer will be summonsed to appear in Court
for an offence under Section 444 (1) Education
Act 1996 for failing to ensure regular school
attendance or for an offence under Section 103
Education and Inspections Act 2006 for failing
to ensure their child is not in a public place.

ST BART’S SUPER QUIZ – THIS WEEK’S QUESTION
Task V
Five children visited the St Bart's school fete one sunny Saturday morning in early July. Each child bought one item. From the clues provided, can you determine how much the skipping rope cost?
1. Eric spent the most money. Amy spent more than Kirsty, who did not spend the least.
2. Emma and Eric both bought items that could be eaten. Kirsty did not buy the plant.
3. Rebecca loves gardening and was extremely happy with her purchase. Amy bought the skipping rope.
4. The burger was the least expensive purchase. Rebecca spent an even number of £1 coins, whilst Kirsty spent half as much.

BOYS’ PE St. Bart’s Year 9 Cricket Cup Run
Little Heath
In the first round of this year’s cup run
St Bart’s were tied with Little Heath. In this
T20 format, St Bart’s won the toss and opted
to bat first. A strong start to the game, as
openers James Bird and Jamie Maughan
scored 54 and 27 respectively. James played
attackingly, hitting the ball to all areas of the
ground before skying one ball to be caught.
Across the 20 overs, the Year 9 team scored
119-4.
James Bird was not available for the second
innings, as he had to leave for county training.
Jamie Maughan and Michael Seath opened the
bowling, against two openers who started well
but one eventually was bowled by Jamie
Maughan. Jamie Maughan, acting as captain,
brought on other bowlers who shared out the
remaining wickets. Oscar Day got 4 wickets,
Olly Smithson took 3 and Matt Smith took 2.
Little Heath were bowled out for 48, so
St Bart’s won by 71 runs. James Bird was
awarded Man of the Match for his batting
display.
Bradfield College
St Bart’s next drew a very tough Bradfield
College side. Jamie Maughan, opening the
bowling, started well taking a wicket in his
second over, and Bradfield College’s batsman
number 3, Tom Punter, fell the very next ball
for a golden duck. The other opener, along
with batsman number 4, built a strong 100 run
partnership with them both making 50.
Bradfield College finished with a very strong
score of 150-2.
St Bart’s had a good go at chasing, with James
Bird and Jamie Maughan building a solid
partnership until Jamie was out. Still with
many runs left to score, the remaining batsmen
had to get off the mark quickly, but through
lots of run outs and catches, St Bart’s finished
with 123-8. Bradfield College therefore won
by 27 runs. St Bart’s man of the match was
given to Jamie Maughan; for his excellent
bowling and good batting.
Year 9 Start to the League
The Year 9 have also started the league, with a
fantastic start against The Downs. St Bart’s
batted first, with James and Jamie again
starting well until James was caught out for
43. Oscar Day came in, but Jamie soon got out
similarly to James. Oscar Day and Michael
Seath then had a strong partnership, with
Oscar scoring a quick 55* and Michael Seath
supporting with 18*. St Bart’s finished with a
very strong score of 183-2.
James Bird saw this as an opportunity to rotate
the bowling, with Nick Haynes picking up 1
wicket and Max Hayman taking 2. The Downs
School found it difficult to keep up with the
run rate whilst wickets were falling, and so
were bowled out for 68. St Bart’s won by 115
runs and Oscar Day got Man of the Match for
his batting.
