Franz Wilhelm Junghuhn, Gunung Gedeh. $1,230.

Junghuhn (born in Mansfeld 1809 and died in 1864 in Lembang) was a surgeon turned naturalist who was granted the favourable opportunity to investigate nature in Indonesia from 1835 to 1848. He made long journeys through Java, Sumatra and Kalimantan and quickly became known as a genius and all-round naturalist. Junghuhn, although primarily a botanist, decided that volcanoes, by their primeval forces, are the closest we can come to the ultimate truth. On the crater rim we looked God directly in the face. This stunning lithograph of present day Gunung Gede-Pagrango in West Java is dated 1839. Although Junghuhn considered his drawings ‘lifelife’, they strike us as decidedly unreal and resemble landscapes of an alien world, which may well explain why they are so fascinating and sought after pieces of art. We have 10 other stunning lithographs from this collection of Java. Measures 330 x 453mm.

Jean Demmeni, Papoea’s uit Nieuw Guinea. $400

Eary 20th Century black and white photograph of Papuan villagers working on hollowing out and shaping a canoe (prahu) from a single tree trunk using traditional stone adze ascribed to Jean Demmeni (1866 - 1939) and published by Kleyenenburg & Co. of Haarlem, The Netherlands between 1911 and 1913 in the educational print series Platen Van Nederlandsh Oost-en West Indie which consist of 171 pictures. Between 1911 and 1940, tens of thousands of pupils in Dutch secondary schools were made familiar with the customs, cultures and landscapes of the far away Indonesian archipelago through the beautiful photographs of Demmeni that hung in their classrooms. Measures 467 x 622.
