Riverside South crashbrings safety to forefront

A serious car crash in Riverside South has left one of the victims to question how safe the roadways and signage are for motorists in the area.

Marco Santucci, 40, was nearly hit head-on by a 75-year-old man who veered into the wrong lane going over 110 kilo-metres per hour just before 7 p.m. on Aug. 7.

Santucci was travelling northbound on Limebank Road between Leitrim Road and Tom Roberts Avenue when the accident occurred.

He was barely able to steer his car to-ward the shoulder to lessen the impact of the collision.

was a factor but the 75-year-old man was charged with careless driving in the crash, which also involved a third ve-hicle – a female driver travelling behind Santucci who suffered minor injuries.

“The road is unsafe and people do get confused,” Santucci said, adding that turning onto Limebank Road is particu-larly troublesome.

“I’ve seen people driving backwards because they turned onto the wrong side of the road.

“People drive on the wrong side of the road all the time because of the improp-er markings. It’s not very easy for people to judge if they’re on the wrong side of the road or not.”

Project manager Ishtiaque Tunio said the project’s traffi c control devices meets requirements for construction sites as mandated by the province.

The project, which widens Limebank Road from Balmoral to Spratt roads, will be completed this fall.

Santucci, however, feels the project is taking much too long and made both Tunio and Gloucester-South Nepean Coun. Steve Desroches aware of his concerns.

Santucci said neither one of them knew about any problems regarding the construction. Des-roches was unavailable for comment.

Riverside South Com-munity Association president John Bruce said there are some con-fusing signs posted in the area – particularly near where the accident occurred on Limebank Road – but his major concern was the amount of poor drivers on the road.

Whether the construction is slow or not, Bruce said the upgrades are badly needed.

“Which would you rather have?” he said. “The road that blew out your brakes,

suspension, and axel the way it was be-fore? I think Limebank was considered one of the worst roads in Ontario at some point.”

The Aug. 7 crash closed down Lime-bank Road for over two hours.

Santucci said he was driving with his 14-year-old daughter at the time and both are still shaken up from the incident.

“Physically we were lucky,” he said. “I just managed to angle the car at an angle where it just missed us by about three inches or I’d be cut in half.

“He didn’t stop, he just drove right through. The best way to explain it is picture yourself at a train stop and the rail of a train is coming right at you.”

Both the man’s car and Santucci’s vehicle were completely destroyed. For Santucci that meant the loss of his vintage Cor-

vette.“My family, we’ve lost out on a lot

here,” he said. “That car was more than just a car. We’re all car fans and that was our hobby. That was the car we took to car shows with and win prizes. We’d only had it fi nished for three or four months.

“It was a $150,000 show car. It’s all gone.”

Ontario is launching an eight-week campaign with its health and safety partners to urge workers and employers to put safety fi rst on construction sites across the province.

The province kicked off the campaign at a construction site in Toronto on July 28, emphasizing the need for everyone on the job to train properly, be aware of dangers and keep everyone safe. The tour will be making a number of stops across the province including Ottawa, Hamil-ton, London, Kitchener, Sault Ste. Marie, Kingston and Peterborough.

A new workplace safety toll-free phone number is also now available. The public and workers can call 1-877-202-0008 to re-

port labour practices or work conditions that appear unsafe.

Sponsored by the Ministry of Labour, the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and the Infrastructure Health & Safety Association, the campaign targets construction sites and local offi ces with important information that will increase awareness of enforcement and safety.

This campaign follows a recent 90-day safety enforcement blitz of more than 2,800 Ontario construction sites. During the blitz inspectors found many viola-tions related to missing or inappropri-ate use of guardrails, scaffolding and fall protection systems and supervisor and worker training.

EDITORIAL

It is offi cial: as of Aug. 1, anyone aged 21 and under cannot have any alcohol in their system when getting behind the wheel.

Previously, anyone who held a full G licence could have a blood alcohol level of up to 0.05. Fol-lowing an announcement by the Ontario Trans-portation Minister and Mothers Against Drunk Driving on Monday morning, that number now only applies to drivers 21 and up.

Young drivers who are caught with any alcohol in their system will face an immediate 24-hour suspension of their licence which could last up to 30 days with up to $500 in fi nes.

According to the Ontario Ministry of Trans-portation, the peak ages of drinking and driving are 19 to 21. New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Manitoba already have similar regulations in place.

Some may argue that this new law is an ex-ample of ageism.

Many young drivers are responsible and would be able to handle having a glass of wine and hit-ting the road responsibly later on.

However, there are many who can’t. And that doesn’t just go for young drivers. Ev-

eryone handles their alcohol differently, depend-ing on gender, weight, size, metabolism, etc.

Over the years, countless police reports have come across the news desk about impaired driving. People of all ages, from teens to se-niors, have been caught drinking and driving in Ottawa. What about the over-21 population who can’t seem to handle their alcohol?

Drinking and driving does not seem to be go-ing away anytime fast. It remains a reality, often ending up in tragedy.

Perhaps limiting youths behind the wheel is just the beginning. It may not be a bad idea to start at the 16 to 21 demographic and work up from there.

Alcohol and driving has never been a good mix.

Shuttle unfairAlcohol and driving don’t mix well

at any age

To the editor:

OC Transpo has denied equal access to persons with disabilities going to the Navan Fair.

A shuttle service was provided by OC Transpo for people going to and from the fair. People using this shuttle were being charged regular transit fares and the shuttle ran every half hour.

When I asked OC Transpo if regular urban fares would be charged to use ParaTranspo, I was told that the shuttle is a char-ter service and that those needing to use ParaTranspo would have to pay the Rural 2 Zone fare which is $9.50 (one way) or $19 return.

ParaTranspo is funded by the city so why not include one Para-Transpo bus?

I feel it is totally unacceptable that persons with disabilities including many seniors who must rely on ParaTranspo have not been included in the planning process.

Catherine GardnerNepean

Open letter to the Governor General,

Your Excellency, once again, I write to you by means of an open letter. It is with sadness that I will see your term end, especially since the effort on behalf of our “Volunteer Veterans” has not resulted in any recognition.

In April of 2007, I wrote to express how thrilled I was with the level of your activity as our Governor Gen-eral. Your words were the fuel that encouraged me to continue looking for an honourable way by which all our troops, servicemen and service-women could be fully recognized for the act of “volunteerism.” Something each and everyone of them has ful-fi lled by dedicating a period of their lives, sometimes an entire career and even the supreme sacrifi ce in the service of Canada.

Not since the end of WW II, (after March 1, 1947), has there ever been a

Canadian Volunteer Service Medal with the exception of the Volunteer Service Medal for Korea. At that time I also indicated that never had a Mili-tary Medal been directly attributed to Canadian Governor Generals.

I had openly put forth the idea of the Volunteer Medal to be known as the Governor General’s Volunteer Service Medal (GGVSM). Since then, a GGVSM Petition was initiated in Parliament so Canadians could petition to our Government indicate their support to give honour and dig-nity to our medal-less Veterans.

A very signifi cant issue is the belief that Commonwealth countries hold to a specifi ed period of retro-activity when it comes to Honours. Recently, in 2009, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth approved of the “Eliza-beth Cross” and its issuance may be retroactive to as far back as 1948. Her Majesty also approved the Australian Defence Medal in 2006 and its period

of retroactivity 61 years going back to 1945. The Canadian Volunteer Ser-vice Medal for Korea was established in 1991 and was retroactive to the events of 40 years before. With the cessation of the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal (1947) thousands of Canadians that have voluntarily served in our nation’s military forces have never been honoured or recog-nized by way of a “Canadian” Volun-teer Service Medal and I believe that the GGVSM is still a worthy endeav-our to right that wrong.

It has been my honour to par-ticipate in this effort, and I still hold fast to your belief that anything is possible especially when it comes to bringing about a way to remember our Veterans.

Yours (in Remembrance of those that have volunteered to serve),

LCBO collecting for a cause

Since Aug. 1, the public has been supporting spina bifi da and/or hydrocephalus (SB&H) by making a donation at any one of the more than 600 LCBO stores throughout Ontario. Do-nation boxes are on display at

all checkout counters until Aug. 31.

SB&H is the leading chari-table organization in Ontario providing direct support, guid-ance and comprehensive infor-mation to thousands of families

who are impacted by the unique challenges of spina bifi da and/or hydrocephalus. Spina bifi da is the number one permanently disabling birth defect in Canada. The spinal column fails to devel-op properly, causing permanent

damage to the baby’s spinal cord and nervous system. Hydroceph-alus is a condition that results in an excessive accumulation of fl uid in the brain. Without treat-ment, permanent brain damage or even death may occur.

HealthA life or death issue: Say no to salt

JENNIFER MCINTOSH

[email protected]

Health practioners are ask-ing residents of the Champlain region to put the salt down as part of their “Give your head a shake” sodium reduction cam-paign.

The campaign was launched in 2009 in partnership with the Champlain Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Network (CCPN) and the Local Health Integration Network (LHIN), Ottawa Public Health, the East-ern Ontario Health Network, the University of Ottawa’s Heart Institute, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-term care, the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Stroke Network.

Kathleen Turner, a dieti-cian and one of the health care practioners participating in the campaign, said that Cana-

dians typically consume twice the amount of sodium in a day than they should be.

More than 2,400 Champlain residents die as a result of car-diovascular disease each year

and 147,785 have high blood pressure.

The Champlain region covers a lot of eastern Ontario and has about 1.2 million residents.

“Typically people consume

about 3,100 milli-grams of sodium per day,” Turner said. “So that’s about twice the amount.”

Turner said the biggest part of the problem could be that most of what people eat is pro-cessed and the salt is hidden in the in-gredients.

“Most people are consuming too much even before they add salt from the shaker,” she said.

Studies showed that 77 per cent of the salts we con-sume are from the foods themselves, rather than salt added in after the fact.

Turner said one of the reasons the

campaign went into overdrive over the summer was people’s penchant for barbecue foods — some of biggest culprits for sodium.

Something as simple of bar-becue sauce can have as much as 410 mg in two tablespoons.

That’s nearly a third of the total daily recommended in-take in a condiment.

The campaign is targeting residents aged 35 to 50, because they are aware that sodium is bad and are open to making changes for their own health and that of their children.

“We think if we show them easy, everyday things that can be done to reduce the amount of sodium they consume, then it can be effective,” Turner said.

Danielle Côté, communica-tions specialist for the CCPN, said the work for the campaign started in 2007 by identifying hotspots for cardiovascular dis-ease.

“We zeroed in on hyperten-sion because we know it can be helped by reducing sodium,” she said.

“And the data we gathered in the region showed we had some pretty high risk factors. Obviously we are motivated to make sure our residents stay healthy. It’s all about preventa-tive care.”

Elections 2010

Increased development should include businesses,

ward candidate says

DANIEL NUGENT-BOWMAN

[email protected]

As Barrhaven’s housing developments continue to grow, at least one person thinks the community’s businesses should grow along with them.

Rustin Hollywood, a ward candidate for the Oct. 25 municipal election, said that it doesn’t make sense for people to be driving away from Barrhaven to starting their working days.

“There’s no reason why we should see buses in the morning empty to pick up people and take them elsewhere,” he said. “People who live in Barrhaven should have the opportunity to also work in Bar-rhaven.

“We have a good, large employment base in Barrhaven and they should be able to take advantage of that.”

The 38-year-old has 11 years of expe-rience with the city, starting in the pub-lic works department before working in the city manager’s offi ce for the last 4 ½ years.

“This is where I feel my experience can

be best put to use,” Hollywood said. “I’m running here because I really believe it’s time for a change in Barrhaven and also a change of leadership on council.”

As someone with a master’s degree in public admin and an undergraduate de-gree rural and regional planning, coupled with his job at the city, Hollywood has foreseen the growth of Ottawa’s south for quite a while.

As a result, Hollywood is in favour of the Strandherd-Armstrong bridge con-struction, but feels more work on the roadways around the area are necessary.

He said widening both Strandherd Drive – between Jockvale Road and high-way 416 – and Greenbank Road across the Greenbelt would be his biggest priori-ties.

“Otherwise we’re going to be experi-encing a traffi c congestion nightmare with Barrhaven,” he said. “The bridge is undoubtedly needed, and I’m glad that it’s going ahead, but there should have been some planning of having the infrastruc-ture ready to handle the added traffi c in advance.”

Hollywood added that through going to events like the Legion’s grand opening on July 31, he’s heard positive responses to his campaign.

“I’ve had favourable comments and many interested residents in Barrhaven that are looking for change to happen here,” he said.

Airplane enthusiasts will get an Ottawa show in 2010, but it won’t be in the west end.

Because of fi nancial diffi culties, Air Show Ottawa cancelled last year’s Carp airport showcase and will not run an event this year either. The organizers hope to have planes back in the air above Carp in 2011.

For the fi fth year, another organization – Flightworks – will present the Classic Air Rallye on the grounds of the Canada Aviation and Space Museum at Rockcliffe Airport, on Aug. 28 and 29.

This year’s high-lights include:

• A salute to the West-land Lysander aircraft. For the fi rst time in 20 years anywhere in the world, three of these iconic aircraft will come together at the rallye.

• A lineup of Second

World War-era aircraft, bush planes and am-phibians in the air and on static display.

• The world’s most advanced fi ghter, the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter inside the aviation mu-seum, where you can also fl y the F-16 and F-18 cockpits and simula-tors.

• Military re-enactors in Second World War uniforms and vehicles, including vehicles from the Canadian War Museum collection.

• A tour of the avia-tion museum’s storage wing and see the trea-sures not normally on display.

• Visit the displays and booths commemo-rating the centenary of Canada’s Navy.

Admission to the site includes entry to the Canada Aviation and Space Museum.

Two-day admission to the event is $20 for

adults, free for accom-panied children under 12. Parking is free and the site is accessible by OC Transpo.

CommunityOsgoode ward honours area farmers

KRISTY WALLACE

[email protected]

Vera Mitchell and Dwayne Acres were recently inducted into the Ontario Agricultural Hall of Fame in Milton for their decades of hard work in the ag-riculture industry.

Osgoode Ward hosted a fam-ily barbecue recently to honour the two area farm owners who are also the fi rst in the area to be recognized provincially. The event also served a dual purpose – proceeds went to the Close to Home Campaign raising funds for the Winchester District Me-morial Hospital.

More than 200 people came to event which was held at the Metcalfe Fairgrounds, Agricul-tural Hall.

“It was extremely fl attering,” said Mitchell. “I wasn’t expect-ing it.”

Mitchell has impressive ac-complishments both in the fi eld of agriculture and her years as key owner/operator of Donev-elyn Farms Limited since 1952.

Her farm is made up of 1,000 acres and has four separate en-terprises – dairy, a grain eleva-tor, cash crops and custom crop-ping services.

She has also become a well-known spokesperson across Ontario, speaking to the press as someone with considerable knowledge of the dairy indus-try and Ontario agriculture.

The now 81-year old is a de-fender of farm practices and has emphasized that farmers are excellent custodians of land.

Mitchell was humble about her achievements.

“That was a real experience getting inducted into the hall of fame,” she said. “When I see the names in the hall of fame, I just felt I’ve always done things I’ve

been asked or invited to do as best I could.”

Acres, who is synonymous with the success of the sheep industry across Ontario and Canada, owned Maple Meadow Farm from 1964 to 2007 with his wife, Laura. The farm was a 500-acre dairy, sheep, beef and cash crop enterprise.

“I was overwhelmed and hon-oured by it,” said Acres, refer-ring to when he heard the news of being inducted.

Throughout the decades, Acres has been a true leader in the sheep industry including genetics, performance testing, wool sales, judging, advocacy, marketing and record keeping. In the early 1970s, Acres was on the board of Ontario Sheep Breeders and helped change the membership so it included com-mercial producers and pure-bred breeders.

From this, the Ontario Sheep Association was started and Acres was the chair in 1975.

He has been heavily involved in the industry on the national level when he served as chair of the Canadian Sheep Marketing Council and president of the Canadian Sheep Breeders’ As-sociation.

Yes, there is a problem with sick leave at city hall. the auditor general found that sick leave costs the city roughly $27 million a year. While that maybe in line with other cities of our size, the city is committed to always doing better. We’re hoping to reduce some of that cost that can be documented, to the taxpayers.

City management monitors sick leave usage. If anomalies are found, we investigate and take appropriate action. To recom-mend hiring a $100,000 consultant to tell council that there is a problem, is not acceptable.

It would seem almost unfath-omable for any Blue Rodeo fan to imagine Greg Keelor without his trademark acoustic guitar.

Like a hockey goalie naked without his pads, picturing the band’s co-front man without the softer six-string doesn’t seem quite right.

But Keelor actually did spend parts of the early 1980s minus the popular instrument by his side.

It was at the end of Keelor’s tenure in New York City with fellow now-Blue Rodeo singer/songwriter Jim Cuddy.

After getting their start in To-ronto in 1978, the duo ventured to the Big Apple to check out the punk scene – a seemingly dras-tic change from the band’s cur-rent sound.

“I didn’t even own an acoustic guitar ’til I think my last year in New York,” Keelor recalled. “I always just played electric and I wrote on electric. And then when I picked up an acoustic guitar again for the fi rst time in a long time, I thought ‘Oh my God. This is fantastic. I’m going to write some songs on this.’”

Despite only playing the heavier-sounding guitar at fi rst, Keelor quickly became infl u-enced by the emerging country scene in New York, with “origi-nal country punks” like Johnny Cash and Hank Williams serv-ing as inspiration.

He and Jim’s musical direc-tion started shifting to the 1960s country-esque sound the band features today.

“We were never really a punk band, we were more an amphet-amine-pop band than we were punks,” Keelor said from Min-den, Ont. “That was sort of the scene when we fi rst started, but we’ve always been committed to melody and harmony.”

The pair re-turned to To-ronto in 1984 to form Blue Ro-deo and the rest as they say is history.

Fresh off the release of their 12th studio album The Things We Left Behind last November – a double-disc/vinyl album – Blue Rodeo is fl ying high and continuing to hit the road with a stop at the Nepean National Equestrian Park on Aug. 21.

The band was nominated for a Polaris Music Prize and a Cana-dian Country Music Award for Roots Artist of the Year on July 28 and Keelor couldn’t be more pleased.

“This record we were really

happy with – maybe the most happy we’ve been in a while,” he said of their album that was released just before playing the Grey Cup in Calgary. “We liked making this record, we really liked the sound of it, and we liked the album art.”

Keelor drew on inspiration from more melancholy tunes for the album – which, like all of Blue Rodeo’s song writing, is shared between him and Cuddy – as the collaboration’s back-drop.

Once the pair realized how many songs they had written,

a double-al-bum made the most sense to preserve all of them.

As someone who is an avid music collector, Keelor wanted to release the album in vinyl form with an set ordering to the songs.

“Pop music is always pret-ty disposable,” he said. “I do love albums.

I’m 55 so I grew up in the golden era of pop and records. I’m still more connected to that than this age.

“We also hate really long CDs. So many bands put out 80 min-utes of music and I don’t have to patience to sit through 80 min-utes of music. Again I’m more about those records. I like 20 minutes and then fl ip it over.”

That mindset is the kid speak-ing in Keelor – which is evident in his relationship with Cuddy.

Now one of Canada’s most

recognizable singing duos, Keelor and Cuddy met in high school in 1972.

Ever since Keelor, a defensive back, hit the younger quarter-back after the whistle in a foot-ball practice – a move Keelor said made him “a lot of friends in high school that day” – the two have developed quite the re-lationship.

“When you’ve know some-body for that long, from that age, there’s always a little tickle of adolescence in it,” Keelor said. “Jim and I are defi nitely the type who like to take the piss out of each other and the world around us. We enjoy it but it can defi nitely be a little unbearable for those around us at times be-cause we’re a pain in the ass. There’s always been that little bit of teenager in our friend-

ship, which is quite enjoyable for a middle-aged man.”

Another thing Keelor enjoys is giving other Canadian artists a chance to play before them.

Blue Rodeo is a huge sup-porter of bands like Cuff The Duke and the Sadies, as they try to give smaller bands their big break.

“It’s a choice that we made and we try to fi nd bands that inspire us,” he said. “Just all these people, they write great songs and are great musicians.

It sort of tunes the audience up. It gets them ready for us. It’s nice to have a band that you can actually go and listen to for a bit before the show.”

Toronto-based band Stag-gered Crossing gets that chance on Aug. 21.

As Blue Rodeo gets set to play at the Nepean horse show, Keelor insists the band doesn’t have to change its approach before play-ing a smaller-scale show.

Even for a band that has played larger stadiums, the gui-tarist feels there is a certain ap-peal to playing events like their upcoming one in Nepean.

“Sometimes those weird little shows are the most charming,” he said. “Sometimes the more weird it is, the more I enjoy it because it’s just so different than what we usually do.”

Just like their time in New York before the band’s incep-tion, Keelor said they’re not afraid of venturing outside of the norm – whether it’s where they play or how they sound.

“I think it was sort of a goal at the beginning of the band to do as many different styles as we felt comfortable with and still sounds like a band. One of our great inspirations and mentors is a guy like Neil Young who can just go through so many dif-ferent types of musical styles and still sound like his own,” he said, adding he looks up to the likes of Leonard Cohen and Gordon Lightfoot.

“That group of people sort of invented the music that we play. We’re all just sort of copycats after that. I’ve stolen from them so much I should be in jail.”
