  • 1. Main Characteristics

    • The Baroque Era – Very ornamented style of European art 1600 to 1750.

    – Painters, sculptors, architects and musicians made their art very elaborate.

    – Baroque style: Palace of Versailles in France. It was also used in churches.

    – Baroque also coincided with scientific discoveries. (Galileo and Newton). Science based on the union of mathematics and experiments.

    – Baroque art is a complex mixture of rationalism, spirituality and sensuality.

    – Baroque music used ornamented melodic parts – the melody was not simple but “decorated” with many notes (starting min 8:35)

    – Baroque music used polyphonic texture (two or more simultaneous melodies)

    – Baroque music used basso continuo texture (a melodic part with accompanying chords played by a keyboard instrument)

    – Baroque music was performed by an orchestra based on string instruments

    – Contrasts in timbres: using instruments with different timbres (wind, string, etc.) to create a contrast.

    – These changes happen suddenly in Baroque music

    – Stile concitato- is a technique where a single note is played with a very quick rhythm to create an effect of movement or dynamism.
