The Barok people have a laid-back lifestyle. Most everything they need is available in this lush tropical environment. They grow what they eat in their gardens of sweet potatoes, bananas, papayas and taro. However, living in isolation on an island leads to lack of adequate medical care to fight infectious diseases and malaria. Also poor growing seasons may result in hunger. Then some people may look to the spirits for healing and supply of their basic needs. They may work magic to seek the spirits’ help or even ask them for their help.

The people have been exposed to the Gospel message for over a century, and 90 percent would claim to be Christians. But their traditional animistic beliefs compromise Christian teachings.

The church is a strong social influence, but few churches offer any solid biblical foundation on which people can build their lives. Within the church a number of mature Christians can be found, but even godly people are vulnerable to unhealthy teaching when they are without God’s Word in their heart language. Many people don’t understand who God is or what it means to live as His children.

PRAYER | Father God, thank You that the Barok translators remain committed to the work. Continue to give them Your guidance and wisdom as they strive toward completion of the New Testament. Use Your Word in their own written language to help the Barok people develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Holy Spirit, we ask that the mother tongue Scriptures may become a beacon of light to pierce the dark forces of evil across the island. Help church leaders use Your Word to show people what it means to know Christ and trust in Him alone to supply their spiritual and physical needs.

The Scriptures in the mother tongue will give the Barok people the means to combat unsound teaching and break the bondage to traditional beliefs. The Barok translators have been working hard over the past 9 years at the New Ireland Translation Institute (NITI). At a number of training workshops they have worked with their advisor through most of the New Testament verse by verse. The translators remain committed and need more time to push on to completion of the New Testament. The team will continue to attend courses at NITI to finish the consultant checking of the final books and work through difficult Scripture passages, particularly in Romans.

As Scripture becomes available in the Barok language, local churches will have opportunities to help many see a clearer picture of who Jesus and God really are. When the New Testament is completed, people in general — and especially the leaders — will increase their knowledge of the Word, providing an anchor for a solid, biblical foundation on which people can build their lives. Then they will have tools for evangelism and for bringing believers to maturity in Christ. The project has included some literacy training to teach people to read their heart language.
