    Flying the Flag fort Tarn!!!

    Priory School Remembered

In keeping with old photographs Gaz the Eyes Graphic Designer brought in this snap of his Dad (Rob Milburn) as a bairn that was taken in Locke Park in the 1940s with his sister Joan. According to Rob, Locke Park was the place to be on bank holidays and weekends and all the kids were dressed up in their very best clothes and taken to the park for the day. We couldnt help but notice the clothes - especially the coat that little Rob has on. VERY similar to the coats in the Ronnie Nicoles piece that are showcased on page 25 in this issue - some 60 odd years later - showing Rob has always been way ahead of his time in the fashion stakes!!!

Since your very interesting interview with Barnsley linesman Scott Ledger (second from left) I have spotted him countless times on Sky Sports and BBCs Match of the Day running the line during premier league games....I always watch out for him now - flying the flag for Barnsley!

I heard that Priory Comprehensive School is to be the next in a long line of old schools to be demolishd to make way for the new learning academys. I understand the need and welcome change but I couldnt help but feel quite sad that lots of these old type of Comprehensive schools dont exist anymore...they were beautuful buildings and hold dear memories for me and my children. I thought you and your reders would like to see a copy of a photograph I have of the teachers from Priory taken on my first year at the School in 1984 (Im afraid I couldnt remember all of the names maybe your readers could help jog my memory). The Mall Barnsley is delighted to announce major changes taking place at the centre in the coming months, with confirmation that both Shoe Zone and Next will be expanding their stores.

These exciting developments at the Mall Barnsley will create over 20 new jobs, which will be advertised at The Malls customer service desk and on themall.co.uk in the coming weeks.

Next will treble the size of their existing store by expanding into the current Shoe Zone unit to create a huge 8,000 sq ft shop that will offer shoppers a far greater range of fashion lines and home wares. The works on the new store will take place over the coming weeks and will see the bigger, better store ready for customers early next year. The existing store will be open over the Christmas period.

To make space for Next, and to tie in with their own expansion plans, Shoe Zone is moving to the former Madhouse store, which was vacated earlier last month when Madhouse relocated to another unit at The Mall. The new Shoe Zone store will incorporate the Stead & Simpson brand, set up in Yorkshire in the 1830s and bought by Shoe Zone in 2008. Work on the store is now underway with opening anticipated iat the end of September.

Ian Booth, Acting General Manager at The Mall Barnsley, comments: We are always looking for ways to improve The Mall for our customers and provide our retailers with the space and opportunity to grow. These exciting changes will make a huge difference to The Mall as a whole, and with plans currently being progressed for the vacant unit adjacent to KT News, we are confident that the centre will reach 100% occupancy come Christmas time.

The New Face of The Mall Creates 20 New Jobs!

www.themall.co.ukThe Mall is the UKs leading community shopping centre Fund. Managed by Capital & Regional and Aviva Investors, The Mall Fund owns 11 shopping centres across the UK and attracts approximately 2.3 million shopping visits every week.

Local Charity specifically for the breed Dogue De Bordeaux was founded earlier this year by two Barnsley Girls, Simone Holmes-Gwillim and Michelle Barber-Carr. To date they have rescued and reehomed over 40 dogues from all over the country.

There are many heartbreaking stories that come to light every day. One Dogue Coco (below) was due to be put to sleep at Stoke City Dogue pound the rescue was informed of this and Coco was picked up in the nick of time he was grossly underweight and needed lots of tlc he was nursed back to health at the rescue and eventually placed in a new home in Shropshire.

Every dogue that comes into rescue is health checked vaccinated and neutered before being placed up for adoption. Home checks are carried out as standard and dogues are placed into foster homes until all veterinary checks are done then placed up for adoption.. Simone and Michelle were funding this from their own pockets until recently they now have a community bank account with the HSBC and a paypal account for Donations. The team consists of Simone Holmes Gwillim, Michelle Barber-Carr, Kim Eggar, Suzan Baille, and Nicola Jarett-Hall.

We are currently looking for a volunteer fundraising co-ordinator to join our team too.

Fundraising events are being organised throughout the country. We charge an adoption fee of 150 this is to help towards the cost of neutering and health checks travel costs etc.

WE ARE LOOKING TO GET LOCAL SPONSORSHIP and will place links on our website for anyone interested in sponsoring.

New Market Federation Set Up In Penistone Market traders in the town of Penistone have set up their own market federation to get things done.

Images by design and image works.

The New Market at Penistone has set up its own National Market traders federation after complaints from stall holders. Karen Richardson Branch Secretary and market trader at the new timber framed market area in Penistone told members of Penistone town council that a new national market federation has been set up to organise events and attract more visitors.

The bespoke hand built structure (right) is one of the largest that timber frame specialists Carpenter Oak has worked on and will have a huge impact on the town. The oak frame will mellow over the years to a gentle silver grey and will feature heritage stone-coloured roof tiles and traditional dry stone walls.

Karen commented ~ we want to work in partnership with the townspeople of Penistone and the Town Council because we firmly believe that is how we will get things done.

We are looking at doing an evening Markets and other ideas for 2012 like Christmas markets. Its about promoting Penistone as a market and getting people outside the area to see what is already available their.

You can visit the Penistone Market on Thursdays and Saturdays at present but watch this space as Karen and the rest of the Federation have a large agenda for the area to enhance the shopping experience for all.

  • Whats Tha Up To Nah? is the follow up to the bestseller, Whats Tha Up To?

Yorkshire bobby, Martyn Johnson, reminisces about his policing duties in Sheffield during the 1960s 1970s. This book is a perfect Christmas present and will be enjoyed by all. Full of tales from the past, Martyn tells it as it was, filled with humour and sadness, it makes each chapter a compelling read. Life as a traditional beat bobby is rapidly becoming a fading memory. At a time when front-line policing is under threat nationwide there can be no better time to reflect on the life and times of the old fashioned street policeman whether on foot, bicycle, motorbike or as an observant passenger in a Hillman Husky. Martyns reminiscences not only contribute to our local social history but are also relevant to the twenty-first century policing debate.

Born in 1943, in Darfield near Barnsley, Martyns first job at the age of fifteen was as a blacksmith but in his late teens he joined Sheffield City Police, working on the streets of Attercliffe and Darnall until 1969. A few interesting years in CID followed but he returned to grassroot policing, serving for another seven years. A long-time resident of Wentworth, Martyn was consulted by author Catherine Bailey when she was compiling her best-selling book, Black Diamonds. More recently, with his wife Christine, Martyn published Wentworth in Old Photographs.

A tremendous insight into... a bobbys life [and] a near forgotten world of Sheffield in the sixties. Hes Fred Pass in uniform. Paul License, Sheffield Star Newspaper

The book is priced 12.99 Published by PEN & SWORD BOOKS LTD and is available from all good book shops now.

    Whats Tha Up to Nah?

Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness so said Keats in one of the poems I remember from school. Actually I also remember reading it when I was starving and all that talk of fruit and nuts really striking a chord. However, autumn is the most boring season, according to most. In spring you have pretty flowers, an earth awakening and warming; summer days are long, summer nights are balmy and light; winter is sparkly and hosts the granddaddy of all celebrations Christmas. Autumn is full of brown and things die.

I must confess, Ive never been much of an autumn fan. If we had to say goodbye to summer, then autumn was just something to endure until the festive season turned the corner. But for my latest book An Autumn Crush I had to study autumn, see it through a writers eyes instead of someone just impatient to get it over and done with.

Really there is no other season which impacts on the senses as much as autumn. Bonfire night, Halloween, Harvest festivals: the sky is ablaze with coloured sparks and beautiful flying lanterns. Its the season of hot dogs and fire, smoke and walking around the streets dressed as a witch as if its the most normal thing in the world to do (surprisingly normal in my case). And having a dog forces you into the park and for all its just a Barnsley park and not Kew gardens, go take a walk in Locke Park as the leaves turn and I guarantee youll catch your breath at its loveliness.

Why is the year so pretty then if its dying, I thought? Whats that all about? And the conclusion I came to is that maybe its to give

us hope a signal that, in the words of the Terminator Ill be back. The earth is saying Look, Ive grown the grain, plumped up the fruit, done my duty and now Im having a rest, okay? But dont worry everything might look a bit dead, but trust me, Ill be in bud again before you know it. Goodnight. And with that, the year doesnt just wither away it puts on a West End show of colour to leave us with a lasting memory of how clever it is.

I do a lot of talks in the area and heard at one last week that one of the members had to cancel her sky-diving for charity because it was too windy. This lady was 76. She hadnt thought Im far too old for that stuff Im in my late autumn years. Shes gone around the seasonal clock and is back into her spring again. And good on her.

Just when you might think all hope has gone in life, remember that there is always the promise of another bud around the corner thats the message my book carries, because Ive learned that from beautiful autumn.

Millys new book An Autumn Crush is published by Simon and Schuster and the RRP is 6.99.

Available from all good book shops and supermarkets.

Christmas Presents-Not that time already? by Maria NortcliffeWe are well into Autumn, thoughts of Halloween and bonfires are on the horizon and as soon as we get past that its Christmas!!

There are all kinds of Christmas shoppers, some like to leave it to the last minute but many of us will be thinking now about the best presents to buy for family and friends. It can be a tricky problem. Have you considered buying a complementary therapy treatment as a present for someone?

To help you here is a brief overview of some of the more popular treatments available.

Massage: Massage is manipulation of the soft tissues of the body usually the muscles. It can be used for relaxation, stimulation or rehabil-itation of the whole or part of the body. There are several different types of massage:

Swedish: a good general body massage that is the basis for most other massage techniques.

Aromatherapy: massage is combined with the use of essential oils designed to benefit individual needs.

Sports Massage: A massage designed for the treatment and prevention of sporting injuries.

Indian Head Massage: This is massage to the upper back, neck, shoulders scalp and face.

Reflexology: Reflexologists use a series of alternating pressure techniques to specific reflex areas on the feet with the intention of invoking a specific response in other parts of the body.

Reiki: A very gentle treatment that can be very relaxing. he therapist channels universal energy into the client to aid relaxation and promote the bodys own healing process.

Hopi ear Candling: This is a gentle treatment to the ear. The treatment is very soothing and relaxing helping to easy stress.

A complementary therapist will never give advice about medication unless they are a qualified GP. There are other types of treatment available but space prevents me from including them here. If you are interested a therapist will always welcome an enquiry. Gift vouchers are available from most therapists. Why not treat someone you know to a gift they will enjoy and that will be beneficial.

  • PUTTING IN THE LEG WORK

    www.bpl.org.uk

For most people who go to the gym to tone and build muscle the last place they train are their legs. Males especially are much more focused on toning/ building their biceps, working their chest or toning their abs.

All of that is fine but working your legs is something that is actually beneficial to all of your muscles. Because of the sheer amount of muscle tissue in your legs, when they are worked to the point of exhaustion they release anabolic hormones, testosterone being one of them, that will stimulate muscle growth in the entire body; essentially helping the rest of the muscles to grow with this sudden influx of testosterone.

You get a much bigger release of these hormones working larger muscles so working your legs will release more testosterone than working your biceps for example. Sounds more appealing now, doesnt it guys?

    A typical example of training to increase leg size would be to set the weights so that you can successfully complete 8 to 12 repetitions per set while performing 2-4 sets per exercise. Your rest period should be about 45 to 60 seconds. The key here is to rest long enough so that your legs can lift the heavy weight set but not so long that the rest decreases the amount of hormones you release. Good exercises to do are;

    Barbell Squats

    Leg extensions

    Leg press

    Hamstring curls

Now you may not want to increase the size of your legs; many women want to tone their legs and keep them in good shape. To achieve this goal, the exercise above are a great way to tone; just simply decrease the weight and increase the number of repetitions, taking shorter rest breaks in between. You may want to exercise your quads, move straight onto your hamstrings and onto your calves then repeat this cycle. By moving continuously you give your body an aerobic workout and essentially burn more calories as well. The ideal repetition range for toning is 15-20 reps with 3-5 sets per exercise

Whatever your goal for your legs; follow a structured programme and you will get there. We have trained gym instructors at all BPL gyms who can advise on the exercises and methods mention here.Train hard! Mark

Breast Cancer is the most common cancer in women. Around 46,000 ladies are diagnosed every year in the UK and risk increases with age.Breast screening reduces deaths from breast cancer. We currently invite all women between 50 70 although we have started to extend our programme to invite women from 47 73.

We offer screening every 3 years. We do not invite ladies over 70 years of age, but they are still welcome to come for screening every 3 years and can make an appointment by phoning the Breast Screening Department. The earlier breast cancer is detected the better the chance of survival. Breast screening is carried out by female staff only. She will place the breast between two plates and take 2 x-rays of each breast.

A mammogram takes a few minutes, although a breast screening outpatient appointment should take about hour altogether. Most women find having a mammogram slightly uncomfortable, but only for a few seconds. Following a mammogram, a result letter is sent within two weeks.

Be Breast Aware.Breast cancer can develop at any time, this includes the time in between Breast Screening outpatient appointments. Being breast aware is about getting to know your own body so you can spot any breast changes early. Thing to look for are:

  • The designers took their inspiration from the 20th Century for a very feminine, wearable season.

    Style File for Autumn/Winter 11

Which era defines your style? 40s glamour is very feminine epitomized by pencil skirts with longer hemlines, lady like blouses and fitted jackets. A fake fur collar or shrug will make this look.

60s beatnik polo necks, miniskirts, bracelet length sleeves and knee length boots. For mature ladies try a tunic and trouser combination.

70s wide legged trousers, billowy blouses and stacked heels are set to stay. Try camel, rust and denim for the ultimate 70s chic.

One of the boys Tailoring takes on a very masculine look. Lots of coats and jackets with straight lines, tuxedo style (slim lapel) jackets and Crombie style coats are very wearable. However add femininity with sparkle and a pair of heels.

    Zara

Colour Saturation Wow colours are everywhere from the strong earthy rust, red, orange and yellow which defined the 70s, to jewel tones which dazzle! Emerald, ruby, sapphire blue, amethyst and citrine (yellow green) are colours that can be worn successfully head to toe and will look fabulous for Christmas.

    Wallis

The looks are already in the shops, so have a mooch and decide on your favourites. Dont forget to work around your existing wardrobe!

On the other hand, there is also a strong masculine influence with Crombie style coats and an androgynous look. Colour is very strong, so look in your wardrobes to see if you can reuse items you already have.

Business Owner Would you LIKE more business? But do you move in the right CIRCLES? Your Target Audience Awaits! With over half a billion FaceBook users worldwide, of which there are 30 million profiles in the UK and if you think its only for the young, think again, 14.8 million of these are over 35 years old.

If you are a local business and you want to get max exposure then there are 1 million Facebook users within 25 miles of the Barnsley area over the age of 18!

You can target your marketing message direct to your target audiences own interests, age, sex, location, no other media allows you target your activity in such a specific way. Well, up until now!

Enter Google + and its latest social networking offer with Google Circles, built into the Google dashboard you can incorporate your social media with all the tools such as Search, Adwords, Google Docs, YouTube, Gmail, Maps, Calendar and the growing amount of Android apps.

The differentiating factor with Circles is that when you make a connection or friend you place them into a circle, be it friends, family, work, bowling club etc. Each circle is private in its own right, messages, photos and media stay within that circle, so delivering a cure to the privacy issue of having all your life on display to both close friends and work colleagues alike. As well as cutting out those unwanted spammers.

So why are Google and Facebook going head to head, because how we communicate, share and search for things is changing. The current method of googling for something gives you answer based on logic, derived from the google algorithm, but this has to change to take note of your own preferences. Right now we are casting our votes, of who or what we Like, bookmark, share, review and what websites we vote for with the +1 button. All of this personal input will start to have an effect on how our own internet profiles rank against the competition. If you want to win on line, start building your credibility now!

But get it right, social media is for Communication and Engagement not an outright sales pitch, do that and you will eventually be ignored.

When it comes to financial planning, your individual needs will require a bespoke solution, but in broad terms your objectives are likely to fall into three key areas: U`>`iiiV>>

    U>>}iV>>`L}

    U>v>V>iV against risk

Of course it is likely, because of changing circumstances and priorities, that you will need advice on all three areas and a good wealth manager should be able to do this. Building and preserving capital will cover a number of needs such as retirement planning, investments, portfolio management and trust and estate planning. When building capital, the management of risk is critical and can be best summed up in one word - diversi-fication - both by asset class and by investment manager.

How much money should you hold in cash to meet your short-term needs and for emergencies? What is the right mix between the various asset classes? Asset allocation strategies can only be truly successful if the managers looking after the individual elements are of the highest quality, so its important to understand how your wealth manager selects the managers ultimately making the investment decisions. Of course, in building your capital every effort should be made to take advantage of the tax-efficient vehicles available.

Having built up significant assets preserving your capital for your chosen beneficiaries, how do you protect your wealth against a rising tide of taxation and HM Revenue & Customs taking a keener interest in your trust and estate planning strategies? Careful IHT planning is therefore a central plank of any wealth management strategy in order

to protect wealth, ensuring the bulk of it is passed on to families and not the taxman when you die. But how do you draw up your Will in the most tax-efficient way? How can you transfer assets by making lifetime gifts and create an IHT-efficient trust to help beneficiaries meet the tax liability without disturbing family wealth?

The last thing you want is for your family to have to face a large IHT bill when you die, whereas with careful planning, it is possible to ensure that the taxman does not take a greater share of your wealth than is necessary. Along the way, you will of course need to manage your cash and borrowing requirements - so advice on mortgages, commercial banking, deposit and current accounts may be needed. Again the choice will be vast, so guidance on the most appropriate product or service is paramount to ensure that whether you are borrowing or depositing cash, the interest rates are competitive.

The last component of the planning process is to consider financial protection against risk - to your health, life, assets and, if in business, your partners and employees - to create a cushion against the unexpected. A wealth manager can help you determine and establish both adequate levels of insurance and appropriate kinds of cover, to protect you and those who depend on you, against all the most serious risks that you face and specifically to your life and your health. It can also be used in conjunction with certain types of trust as part of an IHT mitigation strategy ensuring that more of your wealth ends up in the hands of your chosen beneficiaries. So whilst insurance may not be the most exciting area of financial services it is, arguably, one of the most important. TG

Why not visit Ronnie Nicoles child friendly shop at 42 May Day Green, Metropolitan Centre Barnsley.

You can enjoy a selection of hot drinks while you and your child find that special item of clothing. We also offer a closed shop experience where you can select ceremonial wear for your own special occasion by appointment only.

Ronnie Nicoles was created as a result of becoming a grandma for the first time - here Karen Richardson the owner tells the Barnsley Eye the story:Excited with the birth of our first granddaughter, (right) I set off in search of that special item of clothing that our granddaughter deserved. I came home frustrated after not being able to find it. I then made the decision to sell my own childrens clothing that reflected quality and price and didnt lose that after one wear or wash. Ronnie Nicoles was born and continues to grow. We hope you and your children continue to grow with us.

Since the shop was open they now have another two grandchildren - both boys and they have been given the excuse to go shopping and have they shopped! The Sarah Louise collection has some stunning boys wear as you can see from the photographs on this page and there is a wide selection of boys and girls ceremonial and special occasion wear for sale.

The autumn winter collection of the traditional outdoor coats and Emilie et Rose collection for both boys and the girls are also fantastic.

    Eye on Green Energy

Northern towns and cities have been the unexpected winners from the boom in renewable energy that has followed the introduction of feed-in tariffs to pay for power generated by households.

Nearly 2 megawatts of capacity have been added in Sheffield in the last 15 months, and Leeds comes second in the league table, with more than 1MW of capacity added. They are followed though at quite a distance by Bristol, Bradford and Birmingham, when renewable energy installations per person are counted. London has added more renewable power than anywhere else, with more than 3.2 megawatts of capacity added in the 15 months since feed-in tariffs became available. But when assessed per head, it comes only sixth in the UK.

Neighbouring Sheffield has benefitted from a strong push by the local council to encourage the take-up of renewable power, and in particular by plans to give people living in social housing access to the technology, said Colin McNaught, knowledge leader on renewable energy for AEA Group, which carried out the research on which the league table is based.

He said that the unexpected success of northern cities in installing new renewable power flew in the face of expectations that the south would benefit most from photovoltaic installations. McNaught said the boom was likely to continue, both in terms of domestic solar power installations and in bigger renewable energy projects. Around the UK, in the first 15 months to 30 June 2011, more than 160MW of low carbon electricity generation has been applied for under the feed-in tariff scheme, with a total of 44,460 separate installations, according to data collated by the electricity regulator Ofgem and the Department of Energy and Climate Change. About three quarters of the installations are solar power, though in Scotland wind is predominant.

AEA, an energy and environmental consultancy, has calculated the rate of growth in capacity in microgeneration at about 400% since the feed-in tariff was launched in April 2010. Photovoltaic technology solar panels have been at the forefront, with an increase in generating capacity of about 900%, though part of this was owing to the pent-up demand as households delayed putting up panels until the feed-in tariffs came into force. Over the same period, wind generation and hydro electricity some smaller installations of which also qualify for the enhanced feed-in tariffs - have also grown strongly.

So it seems that with todays energy prices rocketing, it would seem the only way to safeguard ourselves from future increases is to generate power ourselves. Thanks to the Governments Feed In Tariff, part of the Clean Energy Cash Back scheme, there has never been a better time!

Northern Cities Top Renewable Energy League Table!

    What is Green Energy?

Green energy is a pollution free form of energy produced from the sun, water, wind or biomass that is compliant with the set standards of most environment management authorities. With green energy, we do not eliminate completely environmental pollution but the negative effects of generating electricity are phenomenally cut to a low. The most common sources of green energy are the sun and the wind. These forms of green energy are then converted to electricity by use of windmills and solar panels.

There are campaigns the world over driven at creating an awareness for green energy. Everybody is encouraged to go green, a step that will save you money unlike the other methods of energy generation. If you have already gone green, then you are in a good course to preserve the entire planet for the future generation.

    THE BARNSLEY EYE RESTAURANT AWARDS

The aim of these awards is to raise awareness of just how many excellent restaurants Barnsley has to offer.

28 Eye on FoodHere in Barnsley we have some fantastic restaurants catering for all tastes and budgets. The Barnsley Eye have teamed up with local businesman Paul Hoyle of RTR (Road to Recovery) to launch this award.

The prize for the overall winner will be a prestegious engraved plaque plus two months free advertising in The Barnsley Eye Magazine. You may remember Paul as Party Paul from Channel 4s Come Dine With Me. Paul will be reveiwing restaurants around Barnsley and scoring them on specific criterior.

I will admit that when we arrived at The Greedy Pig, (formerly the Sturdy Lads) at first glance I was not sure it was for me. However as it turned out - I was wrong. As we entered you could see that there has has been a vast improvement made and the inside has been totally refurbished to a very high standard. My wife pointed out that you could tell they have done a lot of work in this pub. Very roomy, very clean, very well decorated and you can see that they have spent some money by the dcor, especially on the massive collection of pigs!

I dont normally do Carvery as a rule but I have to say this one is one of the best (if not the best) we have ever had and Im not just been nice. Proper Yorkshire puds, real veg, gravy to die for and cheap as chips at 5.95. Is there really any point in cooking for that?

Well if youre like me and love cooking and think that eating out for Sunday lunch will not be as nice as the one you make. Why not give yourself a Sunday off go to the Greedy Pig. Oh and dont forget.......if you go - tell em Party Paul sent ya!!!! 8/10

The Greedy Pig, Carlton (formerly The Sturdy Lads)

    Garys Fisheries, Eldon Street, Barnsley

So here we are - Garys Fisheries which is a Chip Shop Restaurant. Now Gary is no stranger to fish and chips he has been frying for years at the renowned take away outside the Alhambra as well as a shop in Grimethorpe which has been open years.

As me and the family arrived (Yes we, I took the whole family this time my lot love fish and chips) the first thing we thought was Very posh for a chippy. Ideally situated near the bus station and Cinema Garys is doing very well, everyone already knows the quality of his fish n chips and here you can sit in very nice surroundings that are so welcoming you want to stay. And so to the food - Fantastic! And I have to mention the size of the chips they are MASSIVE Look at that chip Tallulah has got on the right - as you can see its almost bigger than her!!!

You can see that a lot of time and effort has been put into the restaurant inside as it looks great the high standard and contemporary surrounds makes the whole experience really pleasurable. So the next time you feel like Fish n Chips try Garys Fisheries, trust me - you wont be disappointed. If you do dont forget to say hello to Gary and his daughter Amitt and tell em party Paul sent ya! 10/10

Foodies trawling the fresh produce aisles in Tesco looking for inspiration are discovering Black Garlic.

Since its launch a few months ago Its causing quite a stir with its unique flavour and texture. The colour is entirely the opposite of what you would expect, and tastes nothing like traditional garlic its subtle, sweet and evocative.

Starring Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton Gavin OConnor directs this tale of two brothers who face the fight of a lifetime and the wreckage of their broken family within the brutal, high-stakes world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).

A tough ex-Marine returns to his hometown to train for an MMA tournament awarding the biggest purse in the history of the sport. As Tommy blazes a violent path towards the title prize, his brother, Brendan, unable to make ends meet, returns to the amateur ring to provide for his family but when Brendans unlikely rise as an underdog sets him on a collision course with Tommy, the two brothers must finally confront the forces that tore them apart, all the while waging the most intense, winner-takes-all battle of their lives.

Thursday 1st December 2011Rock superstar Bryan Adams, shall be plugging in once again and hitting the road with a full band to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of his 3 times platinum selling album Waking Up The Neighbours.

RENAULT SPORT LAUNCHES THE CLIO RAIDERRenaultsport is launching Clio Renaultsport 200 Raider, a highly exclusive limited edition of the award-winning hot hatch. With a wealth of extra equipment over the standard Renaultsport version on which it is based, this limited run of 50 cars for UK customers offers exclusivity and style.

A first for Renault, and highly exclusive, even amongst the most expensive cars on the market today, Raider is finished in matt Renault i.d. paintwork. The choice of matt Stealth Grey or Diavolo Red is contrasted by a gloss black finish to the roof, rear spoiler, F1-style front blade, rear diffuser and door mirrors. This gloss black finish is also applied to the 18 Interlagos alloy wheels, one inch larger diameter than the standard 200 wheels. These are fitted with Bridgestone RE 050A tyres, as used on the record-breaking Megane Renaultsport 265 Trophy. Naturally, the acclaimed Cup chassis is standard featuring a lower ride height, stiffer springs and dampers, quicker steering ratio and red finish to the Brembo brake callipers. The exterior finish is rounded off by extra-tinted rear side and tailgate windows and a Raider badge.

A warm interior welcomes the driver. Leather upholstered Recaro seats are complimented by the zinc grey finish to the centre console and fascia inserts. Contrasting with this is a white rev counter. Bluetooth, USB connectivity, automatic climate control and Renaultsport carpet mats are also fitted. A numbered plate identifies the number in the 50 production run. Customers can order their Raider with a no cost choice of either Renaultsport Monitor Renaultsports on-board telemetry system or Carminat TomTom Live satellite navigation. The Clio Renaultsport 200 Raider will be available to order from the end of October when further details and pricing will be announced.

Potholes on Barnsleys roads could be much easier to spot in future, thanks to a design idea created by students in Italy. The initiative was uncovered by road maintenance campaign website, potholes.co.uk, as it continues its efforts to improve the state of the UKs roads.

Domenico Diego and Cristina Corradini have designed the Street Safe Initiative, which comprises a brightly-coloured layer of asphalt a few inches beneath the surface of the road, which becomes visible when the road surface breaks up, making potholes easier to see and avoid.

The Barnsley Eye reckons its a novel idea but. ..should we be looking at how to reduce costs by doing the job right in the first place, rather than creating expensive solutions that only have an effect once the pothole is already there? The Jury is out....

NEWS IN BRIEF: PotholesIts October, so the bad weather is on its way and as our roads prepare to take yet another hammering we look at one of the bug bears of all drivers - POTHOLES!
