Hog thinks it’s a DogThe Hedgehogs in my Dads garden have got so tame that they now come out in broad daylight to eat the food he leaves out for them. Last month one came and ate a full bowl of food right in front of my eyes and never batted an eyelid. If next week when I next visit he’s taking them for a walk along the river Dearne - it wouldn’t suprise me at all. GM

Did you know that the Jay is one of the most important natural planters of acorns... and the distribution of several oak species is quite dependent on its presence. Studies on how many acorns are hidden have revealed that a single jay can store as many as 5,000 acorns during a season.

After a patriotic start to the month with the Jubilee bank holiday weekend, families can continue the 2012 celebrations with the Best of British Show, Cotswold Airport, Kemble, Gloucestershire on August Bank Holiday (Sunday 26th and Monday 27th).

In the morning of each day, a show arena will entertain animal lovers with the Lamb National, Lurcher and Ferret Racing, Birds of Prey demonstations and an interactive wildlife zoo featuring meerkats, rabbits, reptiles and spiders.

In the afternoon of each day, flying the British flag during a three hour air display will be the Red Arrows, Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, Spitfire, RAF Hawk and RAF Tucano Display Teams, Tiger Moths and much more. Scenic pleasure flights will be on offer with Classic Flights in the graceful de Havilland Dragon Rapide, while helicopter flights are available with HH Helicopters.

On the sound stage Cotswolds local band The Outcast and 1940s trio The Three Belles (right) will perform, while classic cars and vintage military vehicles will be on display representing the British love of vehicles. To top it all off visitors can browse the trade and craft fair for locally-sourced organic crafts and enjoy an afternoon cream tea, Pimms or English beer before a spin around the traditional British funfair. Latino’s Restaurant of George Yard, Barnsley, presented the marvellous staff from Ward 32 with a cheque for £1,040 this week to provide the ward with more oxygen monitors.

Last August Kate Sahan (pictured right presenting the cheque to Barnsley Hospital) - co-owner of Latino’s - saw her dad, 67 year old Bill Gallagher become seriously ill with cancer on his bowel, resulting in emergency surgery. Shockingly, another separate cancer was also located on his bladder following further tests, but yet again, thanks to the excellent care and expertise provided by the staff at Barnsley Hospital, this was also successfully removed.

Following surgery, Bill spent just over a week in recovery on Ward 32. Kate said:

“The staff on the ward were amazing to my dad. Added to that, they offered great comfort and support to us, his family. We wanted to say thank you to them for their care and support and decided that a charity night at the restaurant would be the perfect way to do this.”

Latino’s raised the money by putting on a fabulous charity evening in April, which consisted of a delicious three course meal, followed by an auction and entertainment from a fantastic Katy Perry tribute act. A fun-filled night was had by all!

Charity Night Raises Over £1,000 for Hospital!

Caring Cathryn Parrish is tackling a 10k race to thank Weston Park Hospital for giving her dad an extra 25 years of life.

The mother-of- three from Royston, Barnsley, is all set to tackle Weston Park Hospital Cancer Charity’s annual Run in the Park, a 10k race and 3k fun run, which takes place in Graves Park in Sheffield on Sunday 1st July.The event raises vital funds for the Cancer Charity to help support the work of Weston Park Hospital, one of only four dedicated cancer hospitals in the country. Although based in Sheffield, the hospital’s catchment area extends to the whole region, and includes the towns of Barnsley, Rotherham, Doncaster and Chesterfield amongst others.

Cathryn, 31, will be joined for the run by her husband Simon, who is also 31, and they will both be cheered around the course by more than a dozen family and friends.

She is dedicating the run to her dad, Peter Walsh, (pictured right with Cathryn) who sadly died in 2010 at the age of 77, but who had gained as many as 25 extra years of life after having treatment for throat cancer at Weston Park. Cathryn, who works part time at Barnsley Football Club, said: “I want to do this to thank the hospital for the care they gave my dad. I was four years old when he was first diagnosed and underwent his treatment. He always said that thanks to the hospital he got an extra 25 years of life and how much he appreciated the care he received. Without the team at Weston Park Hospital I would not have had the chance to properly know my dad. He meant the world to me, and without the hospital he wouldn’t have been able to watch me grow up, see me marry or meet his grandchildren.”

The Cancer Charity needs to raise £1.6million this year to continue its work supporting cancer research, treatment and care at Weston Park Hospital,

Run in the Park is suitable for all, and features a 3k fun run as well as the 10k race. Those taking part are encouraged to raise sponsorship and participants can set up a free online sponsorship webpage and even get sponsored for taking part by mobile phone text messaging.

Helen Gentle, fundraiser at the Cancer Charity, said: “From first timers to experienced runners, we welcome everyone to take part in either our 10k race or 3k fun run and together we can make a real difference. Places are available now, but it’s a very popular event, so I’d encourage runners to sign up as soon as possible.”

A Rotherham woman has fulfilled a long-held dream to become a professional artist, after receiving free guidance from Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce.

Having read fine art at university, Rachael Caddy (pictured right) decided she wanted to use her skills by selling commissioned portraits and also trading through art galleries. Following a meeting with the Job Centre, Rachael was directed towards the New Enterprise Allowance (NEA) programme, through which the Chamber provides free guidance and support to anyone who has been claiming Jobseekers Allowance for 26 weeks or more as they develop their business plan and through the early months of trading. “I have always had a passion for art since being very young, and that has been my main focus.” Rachael said. “It is a difficult field to go into because you are told you need to get a job somewhere and you never really think about going self-employed instead of working for someone else. It’s something I’d always wanted to do but I never knew how to go about it and it is only recently that I’ve realised I can do it by myself.”

Through working with Chamber Enterprise Start-Up Coach, Christine Millward, Rachael formulated a business plan which has steered her through to the early stages of self-employment. “Christine talked me through the process of business planning – such as working out my predicted incomings and outgoings, how to register as self-employed, and understanding what I might be entitled to now and further down the line,” Rachael continued. “It has been really useful. I don’t think I could have figured it all out without Christine’s help. Even when there were questions I felt knew the answers to, it was nice to be face-to-face with someone who could confirm that I was right or clarify anything I was unsure about. Christine has also told me to contact her further down the line if there is anything she can help with, so it is good to know I can still turn to her and access that support network.”

The scheme also entitles participants to a weekly allowance worth £1,274 over 26 weeks and, start-up capital is needed, they may also be able to access a loan up to £1,000 to help with your start-up costs.

Chamber Paints Bright Future For Artist Rachael

Chamber Welcomes Tram-Train ConfirmationBarnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce has welcomed the Government’s confirmation of a £58m pilot scheme which will see flexible Tram Trains operate between Rotherham and Sheffield.

The new Tram Train vehicles will operate from 2015 on Sheffield’s Supertram network and on part of the national rail network, which will be adapted to allow seamless travel from one network to the other. There are expected to be three services an hour all day and every day. These will operate from Parkgate Retail Park in Rotherham travelling through Rotherham Central Station and joining up to the existing Supertram network at Meadowhall where the services will then continue onwards to Sheffield City Centre.

Andrew Denniff, (pictured right) Executive Director at the Chamber, said: “The argument against it is that it will drag trade out of Rotherham and into Meadowhall and Sheffield, but I disagree entirely. The tracks run both ways.This is a great opportunity to get more people into Rotherham town centre and make use of the new Rotherham Central station.”

Team members from the Park Inn by Radisson hotel in Wath upon Dearne completed their 120 mile leg in 16 hours for the team charity cycle relay that covers a total of 1300+ miles over 15 days, starting out in Aberdeen and finishing in Southend-on-Sea.

The group (pictured right) from the Park Inn by Radisson Rotherham joined forces with team members from 31 other Park Inn by Radisson and Radisson Blu hotels across the UK to take on the tough physical challenge in the hope of raising a total of over £30,000 for worthy causes along the way.

The 15-day relay arrived in Manchester on the evening of the 10th May and departed early on the 11th May with the dedicated team members from the Park Inn by Radisson Rotherham who accompanied the baton to Sheffield, then onto their own hotel in Wath upon Dearne, Rotherham, before making their way to Nottingham, cycling a total of 120 miles in 16 hours.

Kirsti Wilkinson, General Manager of the Park Inn by Radisson Rotherham says “We are so proud to have been a part of this event. The team only trained for a short time before the cycle relay and although it was very tough, the team member’s sheer determination and focus got them through the challenge and we have now raised over £1,000 for our chosen charity – Cash for Kids”.

“We have been touched by the number of people that offered support and were willing to get behind us for the cause” Kirsti adds.

PURPLON’S READY - ARE YOU?!?!

It’s a one in a lifetime opportunity that the Olympic Torch comes to Great Britain but it’s even more special when the torch is actually coming through our great town on Barnsley!!!

During two days, in June 2012, it will visit 19 places in the county. The torch will arrive however in Lundwood on 25 June and then continue up to Cundy Cross, Town and then onto Darton and Kexbrough before moving onto Sheffield where the torch will remain that night.

Olympic hopeful Adele Lassu from Monk Bretton said she was “really excited” that the Olympic torch was passing through her home town of Barnsley. “It’s a massive community thing. Everybody gets excited about the torch relay. That’s just as exciting to me as what it would be to compete,” said the high jumper.

The relay began last month at Land’s End, Cornwall, after coming over by plane from Greece. David Beckham was one of the first to bear the torch on English soil after being handed it by Princess Anne. It is estimated it will be carried over 8,000 miles.

I love the sun but I seem to end up with headache if I spend too much time in the full sun so you can usually find me enjoying the fresh air but in the shade of a parasol or a convenient tree. The sun is great but it does have its more sinister side. How many will go and sit outside in the full sun at midday but never think to apply a sunscreen? Most of us would never dream of venturing out without some form of sun protection if we were on holiday in the Mediterranean but we quite happily sit in strong sunlight when the sun is at its strongest between the hours of 11am and 3pm in our own country. How many times have you sat out and ended up with very pink or even red skin that is very sore? At one time it was almost a badge of honour to go to work or school complaining of sunburn. We all knew that it would eventually turn brown (if it didn’t peel first) and the redder we became the browner we would eventually be. We now know that this behaviour is the worst thing we could do as the incidence of skin cancer is on the rise.

The skin is damaged by the sun’s ultraviolet(UV) rays. UV rays penetrate deep into the skin and damage the cells. The skin appears to heal but the cells are at risk of becoming cancerous. You can’t feel the UV rays damaging the skin and it can happen even when the sun does not feel particularly hot. After being burnt the skin peels to get rid of the damaged cells. A suntan may look healthy but permanent damage may have been done. Skin cancer can affect anyone but those most at risk have fair skin that burns easily, will normally have blond or red hair and may have many moles or freckles. They also may have a family history of skin cancer and have suffered many cases of sunburn especially in their youth. People who have naturally brown or black skin are less likely to get skin cancer as their skin has some protection against UV rays but skin cancer can still occur.

So how can you stay safe in the sun? Well it depends on being sensible. Try to stay in the shade when the sun is strongest between the hours of 11am and 3pm. Make sure you never burn. Try to cover up with a t-shirt sun hat and sunglasses. Whenever you go out you should wear sun protection. We should think about wearing sunscreen every day and this is something most of us are not used to. There are many sunscreens available but generally speaking we should use one that has an SPF or sun protection factor of 15 or more. What does this mean? Well we all have an optimum time that we can stay in the sun until we burn. In very simple terms Factor 15 means that you can stay out 15 times as long.

Despite all the warnings people still go all out to get a suntan. It has long been thought that a suntan is attractive making you look healthy. Some people will aim to go a very dark brown almost as if it proves they have had a wonderful holiday. But who would want to subject their skin to damage that is drying and ultimately makes their skin look old and wrinkled. It can cause damage so serious that it is life threatening.

What is the alternative? Well despite using sunscreen or sunblock the chances are that the skin will become bronzed though not as deeply. And remember that it is good to get a little sun on the skin to top up levels of vitamin D. Some will turn to sunbeds to create the perfect tan but they are equally as bad for the skin as the sun. The only safe tan is the one that comes out of a bottle from the makeup counter.

So what should you do if you think you may have skin cancer? Basically you should check your skin for freckles or moles that have grown, changed colour or are raised above the skin. Also do they bleed, itch, scale or become ulcerous? If any of these factors occur then check it out with you GP. Early recognition means that the condition can be treated relatively easily and successfully.

We all knew that it would eventually turn brown (if it didn’t peel first) and the redder we became the browner we would eventually be. We now know that this behaviour is the worst thing we could do as the incidence of skin cancer is on the rise.

The skin is damaged by the sun’s ultraviolet(UV) rays. UV rays penetrate deep into the skin and damage the cells. The skin appears to heal but the cells are at risk of becoming cancerous. You can’t feel the UV rays damaging the skin and it can happen even when the sun does not feel particularly hot. After being burnt the skin peels to get rid of the damaged cells. A suntan may look healthy but permanent damage may have been done. Skin cancer can affect anyone but those most at risk have fair skin that burns easily, will normally have blond or red hair and may have many moles or freckles. They also may have a family history of skin cancer and have suffered many cases of sunburn especially in their youth. People who have naturally brown or black skin are less likely to get skin cancer as their skin has some protection against UV rays but skin cancer can still occur.

So how can you stay safe in the sun? Well it depends on being sensible. Try to stay in the shade when the sun is strongest between the hours of 11am and 3pm. Make sure you never burn. Try to cover up with a t-shirt sun hat and sunglasses. Whenever you go out you should wear sun protection. We should think about wearing sunscreen every day and this is something most of us are not used to. There are many sunscreens available but generally speaking we should use one that has an SPF or sun protection factor of 15 or more. What does this mean? Well we all have an optimum time that we can stay in the sun until we burn. In very simple terms Factor 15 means that you can stay out 15 times as long.

Despite all the warnings people still go all out to get a suntan. It has long been thought that a suntan is attractive making you look healthy. Some people will aim to go a very dark brown almost as if it proves they have had a wonderful holiday. But who would want to subject their skin to damage that is drying and ultimately makes their skin look old and wrinkled. It can cause damage so serious that it is life threatening.

What is the alternative? Well despite using sunscreen or sunblock the chances are that the skin will become bronzed though not as deeply. And remember that it is good to get a little sun on the skin to top up levels of vitamin D. Some will turn to sunbeds to create the perfect tan but they are equally as bad for the skin as the sun. The only safe tan is the one that comes out of a bottle from the makeup counter.

So what should you do if you think you may have skin cancer? Basically you should check your skin for freckles or moles that have grown, changed colour or are raised above the skin. Also do they bleed, itch, scale or become ulcerous? If any of these factors occur then check it out with you GP. Early recognition means that the condition can be treated relatively easily and successfully.

You may remember Paul from his hilarious appearance on the Channel Four Television programme “Come Dine With Me” where “Party Paul” became an instant hit with viewers.

We all know this place probably as a first class farm shop (right) and it is! But now with the added opportunity to bring the great produce from the shop to the table, literally! Rob Royd Farm Shop have been serving breakfast and lunches for a while now and even though I have not had the privilege to try either yet I have heard from friends that both are great.

I was invited to do a review on their fine dining on a Saturday night and fine dining it is “I liked it. I liked it.... I liked it a lot “

You are seated in a what I can only describe as a “posh, band stand, court yard room” - very different to any normal fine dinning restaurant, you need to visit to appreciate what I mean. For appetisers it was beautiful bangers and mash then we had the set menu and my wife Claire had steak and I opted for the lamb and what a great choice I made. I can honestly say it was the best lamb I have ever had. When I do these reviews you always try to find faults but I can not find one, the service was fantastic and special thanks to the young waiter that served us...... you could really tell he loves his job!

The food and atmosphere were all fantastic and up there with the best. If I had just one criticism I would have the music turned up a tad but that’s why I’m known as Party Paul !!! I will defiantly become a regular.10/10

Yes, I know it is a bit of a drive out but where else can you go to a vineyard in Yorkshire have a tour, do some wine tasting and have lunch with the most amazing views over the Huddersfield valleys? This is what you get at the Holmfirth Vineyard in Huddersfield.

We were greeted by Alex who on speaking with him I could tell that he is very passionate about this place. They have been growing grapes and making wine for 5 years and have been bottling it for three you know I’m no wine expert from my time on come dine with me so I can not judge his wine but I had a glass of white and it was very nice first time I have had Yorkshire wine anyway got to try it!

We started our meal with a very posh toad in the hole which was excellent followed by chicken on a bed of risotto and salmon fish cake with spinach. The meal itself was fantastic and again the wine had a really great taste. Overall a very enjoyable afternoon with great food - worth the trip on a sunny day as the views are absolutely breathtaking.

Foodies trawling the fresh produce aisles in Tesco looking for inspiration are about to discover something entirely new – Black Garlic.

Tesco have signed up to start selling the innovative new ingredient, available in-store now which has already been tried by chefs Marco Pierre White, Heston Blumenthal and Nigella Lawson.

It’s causing quite a stir with its unique flavour and texture. The colour is entirely the opposite of what you would expect, and tastes nothing like traditional garlic – it’s subtle, sweet and evocative.

Foodies are already going crazy with new ideas for the ingredient and are using it on roasted meats, in pasta sauces, risottos and any kind of stock. Some have said the taste evokes a balsamic and molasses flavour, which add a sweetness and je ne sais quoi to meals without overwhelming them. The company has coined the phrase ‘garlic just got better’ – after all, it has twice the amount of anti-oxidants of its regular counterpart , leaves no smell or bad breath - even when eaten straight from the bulb and has a much longer shelf life.

Produced by a carefully-controlled fermentation process, the technique combines the sugars and amino acids of garlic to produce melanoidin, a dark-coloured substance that is responsible for its unique colour.This unique ingredient will be available in a one-bulb bag, 50g of peeled cloves in a pot, and in paste form too, making it a versatile and exciting ingredient to experiment with in the kitchen.

How many times have you heard the phrase ‘it’s not worth claiming’? Opt for a high excess to reduce the cost of the premium and claiming for all but high value items becomes pointless.

British director Sir Ridley Scott has returned to the Alien franchise more than 30 years after warning cinemagoers: “In space, no-one can hear you scream”.

It was a terrifying tagline right up there with: “Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water”. But the catalyst for the new film Prometheus is not the sleek, razor-jawed H.R. Giger-designed xenomorph of the first movie and its sequels but rather a huge, unnamed figure who is only briefly glimpsed on screen. The huge figure

in question - the lone pilot of a derelict spaceship investigated by the crew of the Nostromo - which featured Sigourney Weaver in her most famous role as Warrant Officer Ellen Ripley. The mummified figure, which looks at least twelve feet tall, sits at a set of controls with a large hole in its chest - a grim portent of the action to follow.

Set around 40 years prior to the first movie, it features Girl With The Dragon Tattoo’s Noomi Rapace, Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender and Idris Elba, star of The Wire and Luther. It is the fundamental question of where man came from and how we evolved, which most intrigues the 74-year-old director - whose other films include Gladiator and Blade Runner. “You go into the internet and get right into entomology, beetles, the design of underwater creatures and the more you see, the more you think, why did they evolve this way?” he says.

Other themes revisited in Prometheus question whether life exists elsewhere in the universe and what happens to us after we die. During his extensive research ahead of the film, Sir Ridley says he discovered that not even in the science world is there overwhelming agreement.

With a budget reportedly in the region of around $130m (£84m), the new 3D blockbuster is on a much grander scale than Sir Ridley’s Alien - only his second feature film - and its comparatively shoestring budget. The grimy, claustro-phobic and cold-looking spaceship Nostromo gives way to a much brighter, more advanced-looking model which creates some issues. Huge leaps forward in film and computer-generated technology means Sir Ridley Scott and his production team can do much more than they could four decades ago. The ship boasts some very natty state-of-the-art hardware such as 3D holograms and projections.

Though the director dismisses any perceived gap in the technology today within the confines of what he had created in 1979, saying the very nature of the film asks viewers to suspend disbelief: “We’re so far in deep space that the idea of us getting out there you kind of sidestep that real question.”

One of the most anticipated films of the year, reviews have, so far, been mixed. Prometheus has been released in the US as an R-rating, meaning viewers under the age of 17 will need to be accompanied by an adult. In the UK it is a 15 certificate.
