FREE Your Little Eye

A friend was telling me how he got completely lost whilst on a camping holidaying in Holland. After driving aimlessly for an hour around an estate looking for a campsite he decided to give up and open up the map.

While stood there for ten minutes or so getting no further, a local man who had been watching from his house nearby came to help. Sadly both men were struggling with the language barrier in getting the directions to my friend’s destination across. So, he went to his own car suggesting that my friend follow him. They then drove in convoy for 30 minutes across town to where they should have been. The local man did not stop for a thank you, just gave a thumbs up out of the window and drove off back home.

My friend was very touched by this experience. Living in London this has given him the chance to repeat this act of kindness to strangers on more than a couple of occasions, even once accompanying a stranger on the tube. I distinctly remember him saying, “You know what, it makes me feel good”. His enthusiasm and delight was very clear to me, I wont forget that.

I wont say we are selfish people because I don’t believe we truly are and I am certainly not saying we should go hunting out lost tourists to point in the right direction. What I am saying is that perhaps our most under used ability is that we are capable of making a little difference to someone else’s day and as such we are not reaping its greatest benefit....making ourselves happy.

So if you want to feel good, take a moment and enjoy making someone else feel a bit happier. It does not have to take a 30 minute trip across town, maybe a simple happy “good morning” or “have a good day”.

You will get the result that you are after.

The Holiday Inn, Dodworth has strengthened its management team with the appointment of Rachel Charlton and Tim Walsh.

Rachel has been appointed as hotel as sales and marketing director and Tim as food and beverage manager. Both new members of the team join general manager Jason Hiley who took the top role at the hotel in late 2010 after holding positions as general manager for the Holiday Inn Bristol City Centre and Holiday Inn Express Cheltenham.

Rachel, 38, previously held the post of sales manager at Holiday Inn hotels in Rotherham-Sheffield, Leeds-Bradford, Doncaster and Leicester and brings s wealth of experience to her new role. Her main focus will be on increasing brand awareness of the hotel in both the local and wider UK market for conference, accommodation, weddings and special events. Tim, 27 from Barnsley has worked in hotels for over 10 years previously holding the position of Beverage Manager at Crowne

Plaza NEC and Assistant F&B Manager at De Vere Oulton Hall. Tim also has a BSc Hons from Sheffield Hallam University. In his new role Tim manages a staff of 40 and is committed to improving the quality in Food & Beverage products offered at the hotel and building on customer service excellence.

The four-star hotel, previously Brooklands hotel, was bought by Holiday Inn, in 2009. It is still home to Brooklands restaurant, which is famous for its Barnsley Chop and the new management are keen to point out that the although the name of the hotel has changed people can still expect the high standards and quality the venue is renowned for .

Jason Hiley, general manager added: “Our international trademark of quality, ‘Holiday Inn’, is only a small part of what we want this hotel in Barnsley to stand for. We are independently owned and locally managed which is important as we continue to be a cornerstone venue in the local community”

The Secret Is Out – Work Starts On New Hotel Garden Work is underway on a brand new ‘secret garden’ project at Holiday Inn Barnsley that will transform the hotel’s outside space.

£150,000 is being invested in the garden, which has been designed by Sheffield-based landscape architects, Dragonfly Landscapes. The space will feature bright flowerbeds, a grand gazebo, walkways and seating and has been inspired by the many gardens of China that are created to stimulate the senses and provide an area of tranquillity and well-being.

The new 35m x 14m garden, to the rear of the hotel, will offer the perfect place for Weddings and special celebrations providing a stunning backdrop for photographs and entertaining.

Jason Hiley, general manager at Holiday Inn Barnsley said: “The secret garden is just one of several exciting improvements being made to the hotel so that we can continue to offer the best experience possible for our guests. It will particularly appeal to those having their weddings with us as will provide a beautiful setting for photographs. We are really excited to see it taking shape and look forward to unveiling it to the public in the summer.”

07Eye on Music News

Saturday the 27th August will see Kate Rusby, the defining voice of contemporary English Folk Music, perform as part of a series of three concerts in the grounds of Cannon Hall Open Farm, near Barnsley.

Kate Rusby’s exquisite interpretations of Traditional songs and finely wrought self-penned tunes have won her an audience that reaches beyond the genre. Born and raised in Barnsley, the inherently dramatic storytelling of folk song has the same allure to her today as it did when she first heard her parents singing the songs when she was a toddler.

As a girl, Kate spent weekends and holidays being ferried around the folk festivals, where her parents’ ceilidh band was playing or her dad was in charge of sound systems. Kate was inspired to take up guitar by Barnsley’s Dave Burland and at the age of 15 got her first gig at Holmfirth Folk Festival. She loved the music, and always knew she would end up in some branch of the performing arts. To this end, Kate completed a Performing Arts course at Barnsley College, which equipped her with a good foundation on which to build. She even turned up as an extra in television soaps, and acting seemed a possible route, but music drew her back.

Today, Kate has a fan base that has grown steadily over the last 15 years. She has received several awards for her music, and even appeared on Top Of The Pops. Her philosophy is simple: “Always be willing to learn, be kind to people you work with, and don’t be put off by criticisms. Write and play what you want to, not what you think will please the most people.”

The Cawthorne concerts will also see will see a Motown Extravaganza (Friday 26th) where original Drifters member Roy G Hemmings presents his “Reach Out To Motown” show. It is a celebration of 50 years of Motown, with hits by The Supremes, Martha Reeves and the Vandellas, The Four Tops, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder and Lionel Ritchie to name but a few. The Sunday (28th) will include a performace by The Grimethorpe Colliery Band who are celebrating the 15th anniversary of this classic film “BRASSED OFF” and the concerts will reflect this with popular tracks from the movie.

July 2011 | Barnsley Eye

Apparently selling one’s house is one of the biggest causes of stress ever.

My house is presently up for sale and I can see why grown men cry at the process. It’s an exercise in staying strong and silent when you want to batter a wall with your cranium. It’s frustrating, sleep-depriving, nerve-wracking, continually disappointing ...

There are wonderful people who come through our portals with no chain – but think the garden is too big. There are people who love the garden, but think the house isn’t right. Then there are the people who LOVE the house and ADORE the garden – but have their own property to sell. It’s like doing a series of jigsaws, every one with a piece missing.

I didn’t think there was much point looking for a house to move to until ours was sold – then I saw it. Misted in fairydust, I happened upon our castle in the sky and now nothing else will do. In our heads, we have already moved in and are eating from our new kitchen. Our bodies remain in the old house, but our spirits have switched properties. But then spirits aren’t hampered by processes of mortgage applications and valuation fees. They can flit where they will – and they have.

It’s been twelve years since I moved so I’d forgotten about the joys of having to stump up for stamp duties and paying solicitors charges, coughing up for this extra fee and that one as well – and worrying about the surveyor’s reports. And then,

if everything has been passed, praying that no one will back out; that the chain of twenty people will hold strong. And if it does, it’s time to pack up our whole life in boxes. I moved into this house from a tiny cottage and still had a truckload of stuff. This time round I’ll need so many tea crates that placed end to end they’ll look like the Great Wall of China on Google Earth.

It’s bad enough packing up a load of big trolley shopping in Morrisons – transferring all our wordly goods from one house to another will be a great big woolly Mammoth of a task. I think we’ll be needing a few skips and charity bags as well as removal vans. I’m determined to be more minimalistic in my new pad. I will not be taking the tailor’s dummy with me that has been patiently waiting in the cellar for six years for a revival of my dressmaking days. Or the forty year collection of joke books.

It would be so much easier to stay where I am and forget fantasies of the dwelling place which haunts my dreams at night. But my damned spirit will not move back. It’s over there, waiting for me to join it. It’s got the kettle on and the biscuits out. It’s filled in the forms so that the post office will deliver all my mail to its new address. It’s compiled a list of the 500 people I need to contact to say that ‘I no longer reside at Longlawns’. It won’t return. I must join it, not have it return to me.

So wish me luck. Wish me some sleep and at least a few moments a day when I’m not thinking about changing habitats. Wish me smiling solicitors desperate to give me discount, surveyors who sigh at the architecture, charge-waiving bank managers. Most of all wish me a lovely family that walks into my present home and says, ‘Wow – we’re having this. Cash okay?’ If only I were as good at patience as I am at dreaming.

A Moving Story...I always feel a bit sorry for dads on Father’s Day. They often don’t get half the fuss and attention that we make over our mams on Mother’s Day.

I sometimes wonder if it was just dreamt up as an afterthought so they don’t feel left out… I can picture them all in a boardroom now “Best to keep the dads happy as well – stick a few cards out with golf clubs on, footballs and jokes about beer – that’ll do ‘em…” Then we’re all expected to shuffle off to the shops and buy some dad-targeted tat like musical socks, stuff with The Stig on, or a barrowful of Wine Gums and that’s pretty much it. Slightly unfair really, when for a lot of people he’s the first port of call in the event of a flat tyre, broken light switch, spider in the bath crisis etc.

In fact the first observance of Father’s Day took place in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 5, 1908 – a few months after the very first Mother’s Day. It was organized by a woman called Grace Golden Clayton, who wanted to celebrate the lives of the 210 fathers who had been lost in a mining disaster several months earlier in the nearby town of Monongah. She chose the Sunday nearest to her own deceased father’s birthday to mark an occasion on which the town’s fathers would be celebrated and revered.

On Saturday 4th June my own dad collapsed in Barnsley town centre

with what would have been a fatal heart attack.

We were later informed that a passer-by (who up to now we have failed to track down) performed CPR on him until an ambulance came on the scene. Thank god they did. My dad’s heart had stopped for 25 minutes. He was, in effect, dead and would be now had it not been for this person who was my dad’s heart and lungs when he was unable to use his own.

Fast forward a few weeks and due to the excellent care the staff at Barnsley Hospital and Sheffield Northern General provided (in particular the Intensive Care Unit and Coronary Care wards), my dad is well on the road to recovery – all thanks to the bravery, knowledge and kindness of the stranger who saved his life that day. This is why I’m dedicating this month’s column to them.

It takes much courage to act in a crisis. If someone approaches me at work with so much as a paper cut my face pales (if it’s possible to go any whiter – I’m more moon-tan than sun-tan).

To assume responsibility for someone’s health and safety is the biggest and most important job anyone can ever do. Every single one of us relies on the care of others at some stage in our lives, so where would we be without the doctors, nurses, parents and carers of the world? Not to mention the everyday heroes who step in when help is needed…

To the person who stayed with my dad that Saturday, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for hopefully giving me many years more Father’s Days with him.

My world at least, is a better place for you being in it.

You literally are a lifesaver.

My heart belongs to Daddy...

The Trend - Tribal Hair

Seen at... There was intricate basket weaving at Alexander McQueen, while the tribal inspiration was clear to see at Alexander Wang, where models walked like warriors down the catwalk with hair daubed in white paint. There are so many different styles of braids, but the thick Viking plaits at Amanda Wakeley were some of our favorite summer looks, modern tribal influences were reflected in statement accessories.

Is it for me? If you want to reinvent your hair, time and time again, going tribal is the way to do it. This look is very versatile and can be tailored to suit any occasion. From a quick fishtail plait to perk up long hair to accessorising your style with feathers, leather headbands, there’s no end to the creative looks offered by the tribal trend.

Who’s wearing it? Celebrities have certainly embraced the tribal trend, with Brit girls Cheryl Cole and Mollie King opting for a fashionable take on the trend. looking to Apache tribes with their headbands. When it comes to plaits, they’re everywhere! Ava Samboro stepped out wearing tight braids, while Pixie Lott’s pretty braided style has become something of a trademark.

Sizzling summer hair colour trends :

Sun Kissed Inspired by the sultry looks of Brigitte Bardot ‘the sun goddess of St. Tropez’, this technique provides natural looking highlights reminiscent of the effects of the sun.

Nude hair colour The ‘no colour colour’ gives the glossiest richest tonal colour inspired by the ‘no makeup makeup look’. Think Angelina Jolie, with the richest red carpet gloss in your natural or slightly darker tone.

Tye dye This technique of Chic tye dye colour is developed for a strong grown out colour with really lightened ends and ashy roots. Edgy yet chic, modern and cool, young and fresh.

Honey hue The perfect technique for brunettes that wish to be honeyed up. A mixture of slices and balliage that is painted on giving a really beachy yet softly lightened effect. The re-growth is manageable and the effect is sexy, beautiful and softly textured.

Iconic Blonde The ultimate blonde – think Gwyneth Paltrow clean bright all over colour with highlights running through it, resulting in ‘A’ list hair. This is traffic stopping colour for the blonde that is chic, sexy , fun and fabulous.

Luminous Lights Inspired by luminescent make-up, this is a technique of applying a woven lightening colour in a soft tone and radiant lightener in fine sections back to back which gives a natural yet luminous look to the hair.

Models on the Spring/Summer catwalks looked like they had just stepped off the plane after a round-the-world journey, having picked up style inspiration from every continent. From springy African texture to thick Nordic rope plaits and narrow twisted cornrows, the runways showcased global influences of style combined with a modern, urban edge.

Be Sun Smart

01226 43 3979 or e-mail: [email protected]

Cancer Research UK makes it clear in their policy statement on sunbeds that they do not recommend the use of sunbeds for the purpose of acquiring a tan. The British Association of Dermatologists would also agree that sunbed use for cosmetic reasons should not be undertaken (BAD, 2009).

STATEMENT - Using a sunbed to acquire a tan before a sunny holiday will protect my skin from burning.

RESPONSE - A pre existing tan offers little or no protection against burning. It is about as effective as using SPF 2-4 suncream.

STATEMENT - I need to sun bathe to ensure I get enough vitamin D to keep my bones healthy. RESPONSE - Normally individuals can get enough vitamin D from day to day exposure during sunny months to last through the winter months. You only need very short exposure to the sun to make vitamin D, the amount of time required is less than that required to develop sunburn.

STATEMENT - It’s my choice whether or not I use a sunbed.RESPONSE - Individuals over 18 years of age should be free to make their own decision about sunbed use, CRUK, 2009 suggest this should be done in conjunction with information required to make an informed choice. Government legislation prevents the use of unsupervised sunbeds for all age groups and those under 18yrs from buying or hiring sunbeds and from using them in a commercial establishment.

STATEMENT - Using a sunbed to acquire a tan is safer than sunbathing RESPONSE - Sunbeds should not be seen as a safer alternative to sunbathing. Overexposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV) is the main cause of skin cancer development.

STATEMENT - Some individuals are at greater risk of skin cancer and it is best to avoid sunbeds altogether if you are Aged under 18 years, Have a family history of skin cancer, Have fair or freckly skin or burn easily, Have a lot of moles, Have had skin cancer in the past, Are using any medication that would increase your risk of burning when exposed to ultraviolet light. (CRUK, 2009)

Smoking Damages Your Health! by Maria Nortcliffe - Cert. E.C.B.S. MAR, MICHT

Appointments also available at Skin &Tonic334a Sheffield Road, Birdwell, Barnsley Telephone: 01226 747727

We have been bombarded over the years with all kinds of information about how bad smoking is for us, so much so that I think the message sometimes passes people by. “Oh no not that old chestnut again,” I hear you say. Smokers always seem to get a raw deal. They seem to be the ones to be hit in the budget. There are always another few pence added to the price of a packet of cigarettes-so much over the years that in fact I was amazed at how much a packet of cigarettes actually costs. Smokers were again hit with the smoking ban in pubs and other public places. As a result many people managed to stop smoking when the smoking ban was introduced. Some people are still trying and there are those for whom it makes no difference at all.

We all know the dangers of smoking. When asked most people know that smoking can cause lung cancer, but it is also a contributory factor in many more cancers. Cancers of the mouth, nose, throat, larynx, gullet (oesophagus), pancreas, bladder, cervix, blood (leukaemia), and kidney are all more common in smokers Many people also know that it contributes to heart conditions and strokes and it worsens the effects of some conditions such as MS. Of course we are also warned to avoid smoking during pregnancy and it is frowned upon to smoke where there are children. So what is it that makes smoking so dangerous?

Cigarette smoke contains nicotine which is a stimulant. Regular smokers develop withdrawal symptoms when nicotine levels in the blood fall. This leads to craving, anxiety, restlessness, headaches, irritability, hunger, and lack of concentration. All these are relieved by the next cigarette, therefore as we well know cigarettes are addictive and smokers need to smoke regularly to prevent nicotine withdrawal symptoms.

Tar in cigarettes contains chemicals that deposit into the lungs and can get to other parts of the body via the blood stream. Cigarette smoke contains over 4,000 chemicals including carcinogens (causes of cancer).

Carbon monoxide in cigarette affects the oxygen carrying capacity of the blood. This affects the amount of oxygen getting around the body. Smokers can become breathless very easily and suffer more with colds flu chest infections asthma and are at risk of developing chronic obstructive pulmonary disorder (COPD). Smoking during pregnancy means that less oxygen gets to the growing baby, increasing the risk of miscarriage, premature birth, low birth weight, stillbirth and poorer long term development of the baby.

Did you know that as well as causing a significant number of illnesses and causing a worsening of symptoms in many others, smoking can have an effect on fertility and other sexual problems?

There are so many other drawbacks about smoking, like the smell on clothes, hair, skin, breath and in the home. Sense of taste is dulled so you don’t enjoy food as much. Smoking is expensive and life insurance can be more expensive. Smokers are more likely to have to take sick leave. Smoking may be a factor in the failure of friendships and romance, smoking is not as attractive as it is made out to be in advertising.

But all is not lost. If you stop smoking you can begin to feel the benefits straight away.

After 72 hours breathing becomes easier. Bronchial tubes begin to relax and energy levels increase.

After 1 month skin appearance improves

After 3-6 months coughs, wheezing, and breathing problems improve and lung function increases by up to 10%.

After 1 year risk of a heart attack falls to about half that of a smoker

After 10 years risk of lung cancer falls to about half that of a smoker.

After 15 years risk of heart attack falls to the same level as someone who has never smoked.

There are other benefits too, chest infections and colds become less frequent. The smell of tobacco smoke on the breath, hair and clothing disappears. Food a drink smells and tastes much better and you will be financially better off. If you smoke an average of 20 cigarettes per day you can save over £1,000 in a year!!

It is never too late to stop smoking and if you manage to stop before the age of 35 your life expectancy is only slightly less than someone who has never smoked at all. If you stop smoking before 50 then you can decrease the risk of dying from a smoke related disease by 50%. Whatever age you are when you stop smoking there are benefits. Even if you have already developed heart disease or COPD your outlook is improved by not smoking.

How can you stop smoking? Well the main requirement is will-power and the real desire to quit, and there is help. GP, practice nurses and pharmacists can provide information. There are dedicated Stop Smoking Clinics run by the NHS.

There are all kinds ofNicotine replacement therapies in the form of patches gums sprays lozenges and tablets. And check out the helplines:

www.quit.org.uk and www.smokefree.nhs.uk.If you really want to quit the help is out there. Go for it!

FIT FOR GOLF

www.bpl.org.uk

Thanks to young stars like Rory Mcilroy and Lee Westwood more and more youngsters are taking up golf. This is not only great for the sport but it is fantastic for them too.

With the nation currently trying to wage war against obesity and unhealthy lifestyles golf can certainly play a part in keeping you fit and healthy. If you think about the average golf course, which can take on average three to three and a half hours to play a full eighteen holes, the terrain can be varied it certainly adds up to a fair few miles of walking. The average golf course is 6300 yards long- this equates to roughly 4 miles of walking for a full round of eighteen holes (that’s before you star trekking off into the rough if you hit a bad shot like we all can do!)

The point is that you can do something you enjoy, like golf, and still get some good exercise out of it. Little things like actually walking instead of hiring a buggy means that you will walk further and carrying your own bag instead of pulling it on a trolley will certainly help you burn any calories. Not only is golf great for fitness but it can really help your flexibility. The stretches you can do to prepare for a round of golf really get your muscles nice and loose. You can start off by stretching your triceps;

Take one arm and place your finger tips between your shoulder blades, use the other arm to slightly help you reach further down your back. Hold this at a point where can you ‘feel’ the stretch for ten seconds and repeat with the opposite arm

Next, stretch out your Biceps; Clasp your hands together behind your back placing your hands over each other- don’t interlock the fingers as this cause a little too much rotation- push upwards keeping your back straight and hold for ten seconds. Swinging a golf club for three hours or so cna really put pressur eon your back so make sure your stretch it out; Place both hands on the lower, thumbs facing outwards, keep your legs slightly bent and your back straight as you push out and hold for ten seconds.

These are just a few basic stretches you can do but they certainly help your flexibility, not to mention reduce the risk of injury when playing golf. These, combined with the walking distances will ensure that you at least get a decent work out while on the golf course. The beauty is, while playing golf you rarely realise just how much exercise you are getting so for people who don’t really like to use a gym, it is a great way to get out, get fit and have fun!

We all love buying new clothes but these days, we tend to think more carefully about what we spend our hard-earned cash on.

How to Shop Smart

Print and colour: You will find plenty of colour in the forthcoming sales. Buy wisely, by choosing your best colours and simple styles that suit you, your purchases will last you for the next few seasons.

Take care with prints, it’s easier to dress a plain garment up or down. If you find something in neutral shades (black, grey, brown, white) it will be more versatile and have more longevity.

A good jacket -Choose a jacket that you can wear both over a dress and with jeans. Go for a mid-weight fabric as this will be perfect for those ‘not quite coat’ days. You can layer it with a scarf or knitwear in cooler weather. Ideally, you want it in one of your best neutral colours so you can wear it with other colours.

A dress -The dress is in abundance on the high street because women find them so versatile. You can glam it up or play it down and if you get the right colour, shape, cut and fabric for you, you’re onto a winner!

So before you hit the shops, make sure you have done your research: know the colours, shapes and cuts you need for the key pieces that will make your wardrobe work for you in the months to come.

THE BARNSLEY EYE RESTAURANT AWARDS

The aim of these awards is to raise awareness of just how many excellent restaurants Barnsley has to offer.

18 Eye on Food

Here in Barnsley we have some fantastic restaurants catering for all tastes and budgets. The Barnsley Eye have teamed up with local businesman Paul Hoyle of RTR (Road to Recovery) to launch this award.

The prize for the overall winner will be a prestegious engraved plaque plus two months free advertising in The Barnsley Eye Magazine. You may remember Paul as “Party Paul” from channel 4’s Come Dine With Me. Paul will be reveiwing restaurants around Barnsley and scoring them on specific criterior.

This month the guys at The Barnsley Eye asked me to review a Restaurant at a Golf Club. Sandhill Golf Course, little Houghton was the choice. I said “ A Golf Course? Are you mad - what do they know about good food?” How I was wrong - firstly

a great welcome from the Keating family; Vince and his sons Tom and Kurt. They have built a new extension onto the restaurant part and Sandhill has a lovely village pub feel to it. Thats - real grub, real Yorkshire puddings and none of

that queuing for your dinner like you are at school - it’s proper table service here.

So - go have a game of golf, have a beer, have a Sunday lunch or all three like, I did, but remember when you go tell them party Paul sent you - ask for Vince and he will knock you something off for the golf I’m sure. 9/10

FAMILY MATTERS WILLS, PROBATE, LASTING POWER OF ATTORNEY CONVEYANCING (RESIDENTIAL & COMMERCIAL) DEBT RECOVERY

....A GUIDE FOR FIRST TIME BUYER’S Buying your first home can be a daunting experience. Your Solicitor is there to help you avoid the potential problems which may arise and here is a guide which should help make the process easier for you. A sensible first step before you look for a property is to see an independent financial advisor who will advise you which Lender to approach to give you the best mortgage deal available.

Once you have found a property you hope to buy you need to put in an offer and as a first time buyer you will need to obtain proof that you can obtain a mortgage. Your mortgage provider will supply you with an agreement in principle which will show how much your chosen bank or building society is prepared to lend. This along with proof that you have the deposit funds will enable the estate agent and the Seller to better assess your offer. Once your offer has been accepted now is the time to find a solicitor. You may know a friend or family member who can recommend a solicitor or alternatively it would be wise to ring a couple of solicitors to compare their fees.

Once you have agreed the purchase your Lender will value the property to make sure it is worth the amount you are to borrow. This is not a survey. It is your responsibility to satisfy yourself about the structural condition of the property and your solicitor will advise you about the importance of having a survey – if this reveals that any work is necessary he will advise you on your ability to re-negotiate the purchase price. Your solicitor will discuss with you and explain the contract and a copy of the title deeds which he will obtain from the Seller’s solicitor together with a list of the Fixtures & Fittings included in the sale. In addition he will make various searches including enquiries with the Local Authority, the Coal Authority, the Water Authority and contaminated land checks to see if any of these reveal matters of concern.

Once you and your solicitor are happy with all the investigations you will sign the contract and provide the deposit money – usually 10% of the purchase price.Your solicitor will then exchange contracts with the Seller’s solicitors and pay over the deposit. This is when the agreement to sell and buy becomes binding and the date for completing the sale is fixed when the rest of the purchase money including the mortgage money is paid over and the keys are released to you.

Following completion your solicitor will pay any Stamp duty due and register you as the new owner and the mortgage over the property at the Land Registry. CONGRATULATIONS !You have just bought your first home and you can now begin to enjoy it (once the boxes have been unpacked!!)

Investors have faced an increasing challenge ever since the financial crisis broke in 2008. The subsequent global banking and economic crisis left investors wondering whether they should sell equities and invest in traditionally safer asset classes such as cash, corporate bonds or gilts. With inflation remaining a real threat to wealth and the likelihood of a rise in UK base rates increasing, for many the outlook is as uncertain today as it was three years ago.

On the subject of interest rates, the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee face a difficult challenge. An increase in interest rates is seen by many as the solution to ward off higher levels of inflation yet this could wield a serious blow to the fragile recovery being staged by the wider UK economy. However, the weakened state of the economy, and fears of a double-dip recession are prompting the vast majority of commentators to speculate that base rates are unlikely to move much before the end of the year, if not even later.

So what does this mean for investors? Despite the seemingly bleak outlook, opportunities remain for the long-term investor prepared to accept some risk in the desire to achieve better returns. Whilst the double-digit returns from fixed interest assets enjoyed in 2006 are unlikely to be repeated, the asset class remains a key part of a diversified investment portfolio and there are still opportunities to be found in both investment grade and non-investment grade bonds. Historically demonstrating lower volatility than equities, fixed interest securities, in the form of gilts and corporate bonds, offer an alternative source of income yet still provide the potential for capital growth over the longer term.

With clouds still hovering over the UK economy, companies that derive a significant chunk of their earnings from overseas have also been attracting attention from investors and blue-chip defensives have started to win favour. The European sovereign debt crisis, which first came to light in Greece, has now spread, with Ireland and Portugal joining the list of countries requiring a financial rescue from the European Central Bank. The situation in Greece appears the most severe, with the continued threat of default making the situation a perilous one. Whilst the central core of the euro zone, namely Germany and France, continue their upward growth path, the fear of contagion persists with many investors looking for opportunities in other parts of the world.

No one can predict what will happen and many suggest the best way to avoid boom-and-bust cycles is to make objective investment decisions that follow fundamentals, and ignore fashions. The advice more often than not is not to panic. If you haven’t already, it would be well worth reviewing your holdings to see if you are overexposed to any asset class or classes. Diversification across different assets and getting the balance right are vital.

Some parts build up and then move on to a different day. Basically every day is a new adventure. The best part is all the cartoons. The book is half writing and half cartoon and is a very easy book to read and if you wanted to you could read it all in a night.

Jimmy White is undoubtedly one of the most popular faces in World Snooker. Still competing on the main tour, and now carving out a name for himself in the new 6 red format of the game, he still commands a full house wherever he plays. Jimmy was awarded the MBE for services to snooker in 1999.

Dennis Taylor well known for his sense of humour and his trademark over-sized glasses. Winner of two ranking events, he is best known for winning the 1985 World Snooker Championship final, beating the heavily favoured Steve Davis on the black ball in a final often described as one of the sport’s greatest. He also won the Masters in 1987

John Parrott is familiar to millions as a regular BBC Snooker commentator, horse racing pundit and as a former captain on ‘A Question of Sport’. The 1991 World and UK Snooker Champion is also a 3 time European Open Champion.

Cliff Thorburn ‘s World Championship victory in 1980 made him a national hero in Canada and endeared him to millions of fans in the UK. In 1983 he achieved the first ever 147 in the tournament. In 1983 Cliff was awarded the Order of Canada.

John Virgo, ‘JV’ himself, will also be on hand as compere, host and will also entertain the crowds with some trick shots. John himself is a former UK Snooker Champion.

Michaela Tabb is a former pool player and current professional snooker and pool referee who has established a number of milestones for female officials in cue sports. In May 2009 she became the first woman to officiate a World Snooker Championship final, the sport’s highest refereeing honour.

We will be paying tribute at our legends events to our former team member Alex ‘Hurricane’ Higgins who sadly passed away earlier this year. Snooker Legends was created as a platform for players like Alex to play again in front of his fans at some the greatest snooker venues.

Deer Shed FestivalFESTIVALSPECIAL July 22nd – 24th 2011 Baldersby Park, Topcliffe, North Yorkshire

The Deer Shed Festival, a music and arts festival for all the family, returns to its beautiful North Yorkshire parkland location for the second year running this July.

Gates will open on the Friday for an evening of cabaret including circus and comedy performances in the Big Top. Taking place on the first weekend of the school summer holidays, families can make a weekend of it and settle into the picturesque surroundings of Baldersby Park before Saturday’s programme of music across three stages. Sunday is the Deer Shed Festival ‘long goodbye’ – chilled music, coffee, newspapers, organised kids sports, nature trails and a Sunday morning market. A perfect end to a perfect weekend.

After abandoning one too many festivals early because they weren’t having the time they hoped for, organisers Kate and Oliver Jones decided if they couldn’t find the perfect festival for them and their three children, they were going to have to put one on themselves and thus the Deer Shed Festival was born.

Starting with a blank piece of paper, Kate and Oliver built their dream festival from the ground-up. Enlisting like-minded friends, including one with over 20 years teaching and childcare experience to co-ordinate all the activities kids can get involved in, the Deer Shed Festival soon took shape – free activities, a spacious campsite, stuff to do from first thing in the morning, good old-fashioned hospitality, fantastic bands and value for money ticket price. Somewhere to get away from the day to day grind and remember how great it is to paint, play, make things, sing, dance and have fun with your loved ones whether they’re six months or 60 years old. Somewhere to come away from feeling revitalised and refreshed, not wiped out and weary.

“The festival team are massive fans of contemporary music and arts in general and we all have kids. Over the years we’ve got increasingly fed up with paying a small fortune to get our families into various festivals only to be disappointed in the music or in the entertainment, facilities or vibe for the children. The Deer Shed Festival is our long considered response to this. It won’t cost you an arm and a leg to come and kids are not second class citizens. Saying this, we will not compromise on what’s on just because we are ‘family-focussed’. If you don’t have kids, you will still find a lovely chilled atmosphere in which to enjoy a weekend of high quality entertainment.” – Oliver Jones (Director of Deer Shed Festival)

A small and independent festival run by a family for the family and an alternative to the “in it for the long haul” experience that many of the large and expensive festivals have become. A family of four can attend Deer Shed Festival for less than £150, the same price as an adult weekend ticket for many of those big offerings out there. With a concen-trated programme of three diverse days and not just back-to-back music, this is a kid-friendly camping festival in the North of England that does not compromise on line-up quality. In just their second year, Deer Shed Festival promises to be one of the best festivals of 2011.

Sports car fans looking for a unique and thrilling drive should hurry over to Perrys Mazda on Northgate, Huddersfield, to purchase one of the last Mazda RX-8 40th Anniversary Limited Edition models in the country.

This special car was introduced in celebration of the 40th anniversary of Mazda launching its first rotary-engine car, the Cosmo Sport back in the late 1960s. Just 400 examples of this very special Mazda RX-8 four-seat coupé model were made available in the UK and – due to its immense popularity – only a handful remains.

“The Mazda RX-8 is a magnificent drivers’ car which brings real motoring excitement and exhilaration to everyday family life,” comments Peter Woodley, Franchise Manager of Perrys Mazda Huddersfield. “It is still the world’s only rotary-engined production car, and that very rare creation, a genuine four-seater coupe. The Mazda RX-8 40th Anniversary Limited Edition celebrates this model’s immense appeal and has proved such a hit with motorists that there’s only a few left – so customers will need to hurry so as not to be disappointed.”

Available at the showroom on Northgate, priced at just £24,184 (on-the-road), the 40th Anniversary model can be purchased in a choice of two specially designed exterior colours – a unique Metropolitan Grey Mica that gives a strong touch of sophistication; and a truly distinctive Crystal White Pearlescent that will make this a ‘stand-out’ car on Britain’s roads.

Enhancing the Mazda RX-8 40th Anniversary Limited Edition’s look of sporty sophistication are bespoke 10-spoke, 18-inch diameter bright-silver alloy wheels, an aerodynamic rear wing, new blue-light front fog lamps and a 40th Anniversary badge on each front wing – creating a unique sports car and that is a fine tribute to Mazda’s rotary-engined history.

Inside, the 40th Anniversary model has seats trimmed in black leather with stone Alcantara® non-woven suede centre sections. For an extra touch of quality, the steering wheel is black leather – to match the seats – with stone stitching to match the seat centre section colour. The handbrake and gear lever are trimmed in the same black leather with stone stitching and the lever top features a white centre insert. Luxury carpet mats display the limited edition logo and bespoke stainless-steel scuff plates incorporate a ‘40th Anniversary Rotary Engine’ legend together with each cars’ unique number.

Peter Woodley explains: “With its, rear-wheel drive, perfect 50/50, front/rear weight distribution and the outstanding rigidity of its four-door bodyshell, the Mazda RX-8 is one of the very best handling cars on the market. The Mazda RX-8 40th Anniversary Limited Edition also features uprated suspension to enhance the drive experience still further.”

The drivetrain features the twin-rotor High Power 231ps RENESIS engine mated to a short shifting six-speed manual transmission. The Mazda RX-8 40th Anniversary Limited Edition accelerates from standstill to 62mph in just 6.4 seconds and is capable of a top speed of 146mph.

To find out more about the Mazda range or to arrange a test-drive, please call Huddersfield Mazda on 01484 481 250 or visit the showroom on Northgate, Huddersfield.
