We were amazed to be sent this original Panini football sticker of probably Barnsley’s greatest EVER player Ronnie Glavin (in his Celtic days) by Dale Lamb of Perth. Ronnie Glavin became an instant favourite with Barnsley supporters with his prolific scoring from midfield after joing from “The Bhoys” in 1979. He is widely regarded as one of the clubs all time greats. Collector Dale said in his letter he actually had Ronnie 13 times so didn’t mind sending us one of the stickers - the number 13 is unlucky for some - but not for us..... Many Thanks Dale!

A New Music Studio “PMP” has opened in Barnsley by members of local Barnsley Band.

The studio is ran by two brothers, Joshua and Jacob Ingamells who have both gained experience of working in studios from years of being in the band, Hitomi, whose album was featured in the Eye back in 2010.

In February 2010 the boys spent a month in Philadelphia, USA, working with PlayWork Productions on their album ‘Unravel Me’ and learnt a lot about the processes behind producing a professional quality product.

After returning to the UK they decided they wanted to replicate their work ethic in the studio and bring the same level of service to Barnsley for local musicians. During this time they were studying towards a BA Hons degree in Professional Musicianship, which was completed before returning home to Barnsley to set up the studio.

Joshua told the Eye “We have already had local acts Demographic and Electric Theatre in the studio and finished their record since the opening on 9th June. At the moment we have our own band, Hitomi, in the studio writing and recording their 4th EP and we are getting booked up for the Summer”.

The PMP studio shares a building with Liam Linley’s music tuition and PV Drums, as well as having Live Art Rehearsal rooms around the corner. We want to create a centre for musicians to hang out and get the facilities they need to enjoy their hobbies, push their music careers and become better on their instruments.

If you are interested in the studio please contact PMP via - [email protected]

A Superfast Boost For New Businesses

Leisure Provider BPL Thrives Through Recession

www.bpl.org.uk

Over the last few years many businesses have fallen flat at the financial hurdles placed in front of them due to the countries crippling recession.

The same can’t be said about Barnsley Premier Leisure, (BPL) who instead of sitting tight during the storm have powered on through with several large developments over the last 18 months.

BPL has invested almost £3,000,000 in various projects since January 2011, which is currently culminating with the opening of Fitness Flex - a 100 station, health and fitness suite based in Doncaster town centre that already boasts 500+ members.

Along with the recent build of the Fitness Flex, BPL has also spent a significant amount on developments at the Barnsley Metrodome Leisure Complex. This includes a £1 million refurbishment of their health and fitness suite allowing the complex to cope with the increase in membership demand. The financial input received at the Metrodome also went to use by the addition of an eight lane state-of-the-art bowling alley and the more recently, Calypso Cove Water Park, a complete overhaul of the original water park, which reopened back in February this year.

Not only are BPL dedicated to improving all their facilities across the board but with development comes a greater need for additional employees. Since 2011 the leisure operator has taken on more than 50 new members of staff.

It really has been an exciting 18 months for BPL and they show no sign of easing up as they plan to turn the Metrodome into a larger concert arena than they currently offer. They hope to attract some of the biggest acts in music, theatre and comedy with their latest plans. The multimillion pound development could cost anywhere between £2.5m and £4m.

Businesses’ Chance For Awards Glory at Awards

Chamber Backs Regional Growth Fund Investment BidBarnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce has given its backing to a ground-breaking project which is geared towards creating jobs and investment in the Sheffield City Region.Public and private sector partners from across the City Region have come together in to accelerate the development of the region’s Enterprise Zone (EZ). Initial estimates indicate that over 5,000 jobs will be created with support from the project including both construction employment followed by modern manufacturing jobs and a range of support roles.

Andrew Denniff, Executive Director at Barnsley & Rotherham Chamber of Commerce (pictured right) , said: “The sites were pragmatically selected on the basis that they reflect the economic reality of the City Region; as they are clustered around existing assets; deliver sites across a range of sizes; provide a mix of industry only, hybrid and office sites; and enable development-ready sites giving greater flexibility for bespoke requirements. The project proposals were submitted to the Government on 13 June. The project will now be assessed by an Independent Advisory Panel, chaired by Lord Heseltine, over the summer.”

I got myself a coffee at the weekend, sat on the floor and started looking through a box of old photographs that I haven’t rooted around in for years. Don’t the memories come flooding back? Not all of them good ones. I could have filled a whole book with monster perms. One was particularly bad. I looked seventy – and the worst of it was that I paid good money to look like that as well. I remembered coming from the town hairdressers (I won’t give the name… but I do hope that stylist went on to a more suitable profession – like bricklaying) the sun was shining – and there was me with my umbrella up counting down the minutes until I could shampoo it and get it under house arrest. I could even recall that sulphury stink of the perm in all its hellish glory.

Then there was the highlights disaster when one side of my head had delicate blonde streaks and the other had banana yellow stripes. The woman hairdresser called the salon down Dodworth Road after her dog – that should have been a clue. Still, it wasn’t me only who should be cringing. I did notice a few Ena Sharples perms on my mates’ heads as well – and not only the girls. And an old flame with a moustache that should have had him arrested under the crimes against facial hair fashion act. There were less hairs in that tash than there were in my left eyebrow. My cousin was there on the photos with his mullet, which to be fair he really suited. I even found a photo of me in a bikini - I’d forgotten I once had a waist. It was a beautiful purple scrap of material that I lusted after when

we were in Malta, but alas it was just a wee bit too small when I first tried it on. Then I got a violent bug which turned me inside out for the first four days of the holiday – but I didn’t care a jot because the result was that on day five that bikini fitted like a glove and was duly bought. And I pulled a lovely Maltese bloke on the beach who was a trainee chef and he took me off on the last day with a picnic he’d made. It was the first time I’d ever had an olive (please don’t say ‘oh is that what you call it’.) I remember him telling me how lovely my hair was – yes, another perm. A long shaggy one that I’d had after the yellow hair disaster. It seemed a good idea at the time to have curly yellow stripes instead of straight ones. But to be fair, with all the big hairdos around at the time, I wasn’t as out of place as I would be today sporting a stripey haystack.

Do hairdressers know how much power they yield? They are virtually plastic surgeons for the effect they can have on your self-image. I only hope that in years to come, I’m not sitting on my floor laughing at pics of the natty little bob I’m presently sporting because yellow stripes and frizzy perms are back in vogue. Meanwhile I’ll keep the image of those awful hairdos at the back of my mind, but not quite forgotten because when history is forgotten, it gets repeated. And those perms must never come back.

The Sunbed Shop is based at 3-5 High Street Great Houghton Barnsley and is fast becoming the place to be for the latest Tanning & Beauty treatments, Toning & Weight loss and Skin rejuvenation.

This Salon being the only one in South Yorkshire to house this revolutionary Red Light Collagen Therapy sun beds the latest technology in this field.

As we get older, the Collagen and Elastin production in our skin slows down, meaning it loses elasticity and tightness which is when fine lines and wrinkles start to appear. The Collagen Light Treatment works using a specific type of red light which enters your skin cells, stimulating your natural production of Collagen and Elastin. This in turn makes your skin feel firmer and smoother, reducing the appearance of wrinkles and skin blemishes so no needles, no surgery just pure red light.

Along with the Collagen Sunbeds the Salon offers a range of beauty treatments available with Jen the Salons Beauty Therapist to Botox and fillers upon request and with the new introduction of the amazing Flabelos machine this is truly a one stop shop for all your beauty requirements. The Eye caught up with Claire Hoyle the owner and she explained: “it’s been whirlwind 6 weeks and I couldn’t be happier with how the salon is being received.

“I like my customers to feel welcome and we adopt a friendly approach to all. We hope to offer that feel good factor all year round which I think people can relate to.”

“The collagen sunbeds are amazing and have fantastic results they are non evasive and pain free, they firm and tone the skin and are perfect for the health conscious.

“We offer a range of packages which we can taylor to suit our client’s requirements so you can book a 110 mins package at £24 and spread the minutes between the Collagen Sunbeds our Flabelos or the lie down /stand up sunbeds.”

Are you prepared for your holidays? by Maria Nortcliffe

Appointments also available at Skin &Tonic334a Sheffield Road, Birdwell, Barnsley Telephone: 01226 747727

We are all ready for a holiday at this time of the year. Maybe your finances don’t stretch to a holiday abroad or even an extended stay somewhere in Britain. But whatever you end up doing that takes you away from your normal environment you will be looking forward to that break from routine. The question is ‘are you prepared?’ Going on holiday is often an excuse for doing a bit of shopping, of course you need to look good round the pool or dressed up in the evening but I wonder how many people prepare for the times we become ill on holiday. My aim today is to point out one or two things that I have picked up. Some of them may be obvious but sometimes we may not realise or we might just need a reminder.

Of course we don’t like to think about being ill but it is just as easy to end up needing some kind of medical attention whilst on holiday as it is at home. Being on holiday in Britain it tends not to be a major catastrophe. We can access a chemist fairly easily and the major supermarkets all sell over the counter remedies and pain relief. These days the supermarkets are open around the clock and for a good part of Sunday so there is no real problem. If we need a doctor we can go to a surgery or and A&E for attention if it more serious. But what if you are holidaying abroad?

Generally speaking if you are in Europe you can use the supermarkets and the chemists. Chemists are usually quite knowledgeable and can recommend treatments for minor ailments and will refer you to a doctor if necessary. Be aware though that it might be more expensive than we are used to. I needed some ibuprofen when in Austria this year and paid 4 euros (about £3.20) for a small pack that would cost about 30p in England. It seems to make sense then to pack a small first aid kit just in case you suffer some minor ailment that can be easily treated. Some kind of pain relief, something to treat bites and stings, insect repellent, something for diarrhoea and rehydration powders calamine lotion and sunblock and maybe a few plasters or adhesive dressings may be a good idea.

When travelling we tend to make provision for the number of days we are away-which of course is sensible. Someone taking regular medication needs to make sure they have enough to last. When taking babies we have to consider nappies and baby food. But what if there is a delay in the travel arrangements? Three or four years ago when travelling back from Turkey we had a delay of 14 hours. We were met on arrival at the check-in desk and immediately put on a coach that took us to a fantastic all inclusive hotel for the night. For us it was great-apart from the inconvenience of not being home on time. For quite a few it was a nightmare. One man who was on regular medication had taken his last tablets ‘knowing’ that he would be home before he had to take his next medication. Of course the delay meant he had a major problem and he ended up paying a fortune for an out of hours appointment with a doctor. Another lady only had enough nappies for the

journey home and was frantic because she could not get any more nappies at that time of night. It would seem sensible therefore to pack essentials for an extra day to cover the eventuality of delays on the way home.

I have a wonderful husband who likes to be in charge of the holiday. He makes the arrangements for the holiday including insurance, money, passports etc. It is a bit of a standing joke the number of times he has to check everything before we leave the house and then once more before the car leaves the drive. I wasn’t aware how prepared he was until I had an accident and ended up in a fracture clinic in Italy. Most people know that with a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) they can get free or reduced price treatment when travelling within Europe. When we arrived at the treatment centre my husband was taken to an office thinking he would have to produce insurance documents which luckily he had with him. They were not interested in the insurance and they certainly didn’t want to see the EHIC. He was asked for his credit card details. We even had to pay 70 euros for a pair of crutches! On the positive side we were given all documents relating to my injuries and were able to claim it back on returning home.

Interestingly I have read one or two articles in the news recently relating to peoples experiences of treatment abroad and the main lesson to learn is make sure you are insured. I think this is even more important when travelling further afield.

Staying safe on holiday is just the same as being safe at home. It is all about being vigilant especially where there are children, and being sensible. We all like to let our hair down when on holiday and of course that includes having a drink. The trick is not to take things to extremes. You only have to watch the holiday A&E programmes on TV to see how many accidents are the result of too much to drink. If you are on holiday with a group look after each other.

Remember that the person to approach about health care when travelling abroad is your doctor. They will advise you about any health problems you may encounter and whether you need any injections before you go. This may be particularly important if you are travelling to any of the more exotic parts of the world. You would be wise to talk to your GP about travelling if you have any major health issue and also if you are pregnant.

Stay safe this summer. Enjoy your time relaxing with family and friends. Even if you are going to holiday in Britain or if you are going for days out, it is wise to be prepared.

Colour is a big part of our world, and 75 % of ladies invest in colour for their own hair & now daughter’s hair!

Professional, flawless hair colour is an expensive luxury that we treat ourselves to and budget for, yet what is so overlooked is the investment in aftercare to protect and perfect that colour.

At Zena Claire we choose to use Paul Mitchell The color, a low ammonia hair colour. Developed with a beeswax base and other natural conditioners’ The Color provides long lasting natural looking hair colour’ with outstanding shine & condition.

As with any purchase there is a way to look after it at home here at ZC we recommend a take home regime with luxury products that we use on your hair in the salon to take home- creating the salon look at your convience.

Have you ever said to yourself

“My hair never feels the same when I do it myself at home?”

Now you can…..Paul Mitchell Take Home.

Zena Claire Hairdressing 72 Summer Lane, Barnsley

Artistic Director Zena Claire is celebrating 25 years in the hairdressing industry this summer

Where the journey began ……………having started as a Saturday girl, Zena went onto work in one of Barnsley’s top salons - Leslie Frances.

Meet Zena

“I am proud of having trained & worked in my hometown. 3 people inspired me from the start and I have David , Debra & Denise to thank for setting me off on that journey”.

Zena’s career has been diverse from working behind the chair, to delivering NVQ’S & most recently educating for the prolific European Artistic team at Paul Mitchell.

“Educating in Europe gave me a deep understanding of how to teach without words-

this sounds bizarre, but with a language barrier your message still needs to hit the spot” laughs Zena.“I’d like to think that my experience is now transferred to my salon guests & staff training”

Although, still doing private tuition & session contracts Zena is primarily concentrating this year on the new location of her latest premises & developing her team, to deliver to you the guests, the best service Summer Lane & Barnsley has to offer!

As the country embraces the Olympics ‘sports luxe’ (or sports clothes for those who don’t do sport!) The style proves a REAL winner in the fashionista stakes.

Witten by Kirstie Trasler Stylist & Image Consultant

www.style-consultant.co.uk

Get yourself Olympic fit

Whether you practice a high impact sport (running, tennis, basket ball, dance) or a more sedate one (yoga, cycling) you need to be well supported in the bust area, particularly if you wear a larger cup bra. Get yourself measured - ensure the bra has good back support and wide and cushioned straps.

Bravissimo

So you’ll want to wear the right gear of course, and this will depend on the sport/exercise you do, but it is most likely to be in an absorbent fabric which will stretch when it needs to stretch both for movement and general comfort. You may choose to layer your garments and shed these as you warm up and get into your routine (t-shirt, fleece, waterproof layer).

To get you in the right frame of mind for exercise try some of the colours to inspire. Red and orange are always energizing. Pink, will give you a sense of girliness and romanticism. Teals and aquas are great too and may also remind you of holidaying by the seaside and running on the beach. Get out of black, and think navies, browns, dark greens and purples.

NikeAdidas

Neckline rules are the same as per usual: if you have a short neck/heavier bust, you are best to wear a top with a V-neck; If you have a long neck and/or small bust, feel free to wear a higher round-neck T-shirt.

Leg wear – use darker colour to minimize size, brighter and lighter colours to draw attention. Enjoy your chosen exercise!

BOMfest will be in its eighth year this summer and from its humble beginnings in 2005, this event has defied all odds and become Yorkshire’s most cutting edge supporter of original unsigned artists.

As early as 2009, BOMfest was recognised by the Telegraph newspaper as one of the top 100 events of that year, whilst still only hosting four stages and in the past two years, and after securing what now seems to be a home for BOMfest at Worsbrough mill and country park, the event has evolved into an “all weekend” camping, eight stage spectacular whilst still keeping loyal to its spirit and ethos.

This years chosen artists have been selected from over 1000 applicants and many hours of checking out live performances at “The South Sea” in Sheffield, and with the limited number of available slots on offer to performers at this years event, the artists chosen to play can rest assured that in this hard knock, labour of love industry, BOMfest has recognised their dedication and hard work.

WIN A FAMILY TICKET We have a family ticket to be won for this years event INCLUDING CAMPING. All you have to do is tell us:

Cinema

British director Sir Ridley Scott has returned to the Alien franchise more than 30 years after warning cinemagoers: “In space, no-one can hear you scream”.

With a budget reportedly in the region of around $130m (£84m), the new 3D blockbuster is on a much grander scale than Sir Ridley’s Alien - only his second feature film - and its comparatively shoestring budget. The grimy, claustrophobic and cold-looking spaceship Nostromo gives way to a much brighter, more advanced-looking model which creates some issues.

Huge leaps forward in film and computer-generated technology means Sir Ridley Scott and his production team can do much more than they could four decades ago. The ship boasts some very natty state-of-the-art hardware such as 3D holograms and projections.

Though the director dismisses any perceived gap in the technology today within the confines of what he had created in 1979, saying the very nature of the film asks viewers to suspend disbelief: “We’re so far in deep space that the idea of us getting out there you kind of sidestep that real question.”

One of the most anticipated films of the year, reviews have, so far, been mixed. Prometheus has been released in the US as an R-rating, meaning viewers under the age of 17 will need to be accompanied by an adult. In the UK it is a 15 certificate.
