I’d like to wish Maidenhead United a warm welcome to The Hive as well as their travelling supporters.

Of course, a huge welcome back to our fans. We need your support – we need you to get behind the team, behind the players and behind the club.

I want this to be about all of us. The players need you; I need you and I want us all to be together on this journey – that’s how I’ve always seen it.

I want to enjoy some good times with the fans and you guys need to help the players during certain moments of the game.

They’re a good group of boys that are trying to do the right thing. I’m fully behind them and I hope that you can get right behind them as well.

The boys always try and work hard. I think there’s a better work ethic about us this season. It was highlighted in the second half against Torquay. To claw that game back after a disappointing first half.

That gave me encouragement along with the last-minute winner at Eastleigh, a bit of excitement.

We’ve been on the wrong end of that so we know it can be bitter and difficult, but we’ve certainly enjoyed that moment at Eastleigh.

They’re the moments that I want more of – I want to win matches.

Every single game we play is going to be tough, we just know we’ll make it even harder for them when they come here.

We host Maidenhead this afternoon and they’ve started the season well. They’re going to be difficult for us to break down I’m sure.

But we’re up for the challenge and when

we get our moments to show our quality, that’s

what we’ll do.

Enjoy the match and#LetsBeeTogether

Darren

Finally, we’re back in action. Delighted to be back in the games after a short break and I’m looking forward to this afternoon’s clash with Maidenhead.

We’ve done well so far looking back at our opening fixtures, but there is always room for improvement – we can always do better. We’re in a good position with important games coming up this month starting with Saturday.

There’s no point in looking ahead too far, we just have to focus on the game in front of us.

There’s a lot of games to play meaning a lot of points to play for as well. Every month of this season is crucial if we want to achieve what we know we’re capable of and we’ll take each one in our stride.

The Eastleigh result was huge for us. It came from the togetherness of the side – maybe last year we wouldn’t have gone onto to get the win that day but we’re as a group collectively and we’re never satisfied.

We definitely deserved to get the win in the end, and it was massively important going into the break that we’ve just had.

We can definitely improve on our home form, not only from last season but also this season as well.

We’ll play our game no matter how it’s going and there may be slight frustration but we’re trying to do the right things and as long as we stick to what we know, the results will keep coming.

I know a couple of the boys at Maidenhead that I’ve played with before and they’re very good.

They’ve been picking up some good results, so we’ve got to be aware of the threats that they

pose whilst also trying to implement what we need to

do to win the game.

Come on you Bees!

IN THE BEGINNING...The origins of senior football in Maidenhead can be traced back to October 1870 with the formation of Maidenhead Football Club, who subsequently played their first ever fixture on December 17th, 1870 against Windsor Home Park at Bond’s Meadow near Maidenhead bridge.

On Thursday, February 16th 1871 the club played their first game on the York Road site against Marlow. This ground, which was then shared with the cricket club, is now officially acknowledged as the oldest continually used football ground in the world by the same club, eclipsing Northwich Victoria’s old claim by five years. Maidenhead were one of the original 15 entrants for the first ever FA Cup competition in 1871-72 and the following season reached the last four before losing to Oxford University. Maidenhead reached the quarter-finals in the next two seasons, but in 1876 did not enter, although this was the only season they failed to participate. They also entered the first ever Berks & Bucks Cup competition in 1878 - winning the competition for the first time in 1895 - and the first FA Amateur Cup in 1893. The adopted club colours were Red &

Black, initially worn as halved shirts, but changed to stripes in 1904.

Maidenhead FC merged with three sides before the Great War. Maidenhead Excelsior were founded in 1877 and joined forces with the Red & Blacks in 1885. Maidenhead Temperance – originally known as Maidenhead Band of Hope - amalgamated with the club in 1891 and Boyne Hill FC did likewise later that year. After many seasons of playing friendlies and Cup matches, Maidenhead FC were founder members of the Southern League in 1894 but competing in Division 2 with the likes of Watford, Brentford, Fulham and Brighton proved too demanding and the club consistently struggled. Eventually in 1902, after eight years of membership, they resigned and joined both the West Berkshire League and the Berks & Bucks League. In 1904 Maidenhead became members of the Great Western Suburban League where they remained until the outbreak of the Great War.

SPARTANS & CORINTHIANSAfter the Great War the two remaining town clubs – Maidenhead and Maidenhead Norfolkians (founded 1884) - decided to join forces. The conflict had meant that is was unrealistic to run two senior clubs, so

after a meeting in April 1919, the Norfolkians were incorporated into the Maidenhead club, and soon afterwards a kit of black and white was adopted as club colours. There was immediate success in the first season of structured league football as Maidenhead FC won the Great Western Suburban League. In August 1920 the suffix “United” was added but, more importantly, the freehold of York Road was purchased for £1,450 from William Grenfell, later to become Lord Desborough. Two years later the club joined the Spartan League and the 500 seater grandstand – at the time considered one of the best of its kind - was opened by Club President, Ernest Dunkels.

Maidenhead United won the Spartan League title three times during their nineteen year stay. In 1929-30 season the club’s goal-scoring record for a season was set when Jack Palethorpe notched 65 goals in 39 games, including an individual post 1919 record of seven in one game against Wood Green Town. Jack went on to play for Sheffield Wednesday and scored in the Owls FA Cup win in 1935. In 1936, Maidenhead reached the semi-final of the FA Amateur Cup losing 4-1 to Ilford at West Ham in front of 18,000 spectators. It was during that season that the record attendance for a Maidenhead home match of 7,989 was set when Southall visited York Road in the quarter-final. During the Second World War, the club competed in the Great Western Combination.

In 1945 the club were founder members of the Corinthian League. After many seasons of relative mediocrity, fortunes changed under the guidance of ex-Brentford forward, Len Townsend, and then former Slough Town manager Jimmy Price, and the Magpies enjoyed the first real “purple-patch” in their history. In seven seasons between 1956 and 1963 the club won the league three times, were runners-up twice and also reached the third round of the FA Amateur Cup in 1960, losing to West Auckland at York Road in front of a post-war record attendance for a Maidenhead game of 5,597. As well as County Cup, County Benevolent Cup and League Memorial Shield successes during this period, the 1st round proper of the FA Cup was reached in 1960 (losing 5-0 away to Colchester United), 1962 (losing 3-0 at home to Wycombe Wanderers) and 1963 (losing 2-0 to Bath City at York Road).

Athenians & IsthmiansIn 1963, United joined the Athenian League finishing a best placed 3rd in 1965-66. In 1973, the Magpies were elected into the newly created second division of the Isthmian League. They made a concerted effort to achieve promotion to the Premier Division in 1979 and 1980 when managed by Geoff Anthony (finishing 3rd on both occasions), and then again in 1985 under Brian Caterer and Colin Lippiatt, when they finished 4th. They remained in this division until 1987 when the Club suffered relegation for the first time in its history, and the dark days were made worse with the destruction of the main grandstand by an arson attack in December 1986. It took four seasons to get out of Division Two South, and this was achieved under the guidance of Martyn Spong in 1991. An Isthmian League record of 13 straight wins at the start of 1990-91 season was the springboard to success, but the club lost out on the title to Abingdon Town on the last day of the season. During this season, however, the team established a club record of 19 league games without defeat. Following the unexpected departure of Spong to Enfield in the summer of 1991, Gary Goodwin, John Clements and then John Watt took on the manager’s job with generally moderate results and the club regularly finished in or around mid-table.

THE ALAN DEVONSHIRE YEARSFollowing John Watt’s dismissal in the summer of 1996, the Club appointed a new management team of Martyn Busby, the former QPR and Notts County midfielder, and Alan Devonshire the former West Ham and England midfielder. Although Busby left midway through the first season, Devonshire guided United to their first Cup success since 1970 by winning the Isthmian League Full Members Cup, and this was to herald the beginning of the club’s second “purple-patch”. In each season between 1996 and 2003 Maidenhead reached a cup final, winning five and losing two. After coming agonisingly close to promotion in 1997-98 season, two years later in 1999-2000 United made another concerted effort to reach the Isthmian League Premier Division. Despite the odd hiccup, on Thursday, 4th May, a 1-0 home win against Champions Croydon guaranteed promotion. A new 700 capacity covered enclosure at the Canal end of the ground was completed in May 2000 together with new terracing on the railway side. In the summer of 2002 Chairman Roger Coombs announced that he would step down at the end of 2002-03 season and, in April 2003, Manager Alan Devonshire followed suit by announcing

intention to leave the club at the season’s end. Maidenhead finished a best ever 10th in the league and Devonshire’s final game in charge (his 349th) saw the Magpies regain the County Cup by thrashing Aylesbury United 4-1 at Chesham.

CONFERENCE SOUTH & A RETURN TO THE SOUTHERNThe summer of 2003 saw new manager John Dreyer have to bring in virtually a new squad of players and, despite an uninspiring start, United secured Conference South football on the last day of the season. This was the highest level the club had played at since the Southern League days in the late nineteenth century. In 2004-05 season, an indifferent start saw Dreyer replaced by Dennis Greene but the club still finished in a relegation position only to be reprieved following the demise of Hornchurch. Following a somewhat dismal start to the 2005-06 season Greene was dismissed and replaced by Carl Taylor. Taylor was briefed with the task of establishing the club in the Conference South, but proved incapable of this and the club were to finish adrift at the bottom of the table. However, in November 2005, a financial crisis loomed. A desperate situation was resolved when the members voted to wind up the existing member’s club, and ownership was transferred to a new Limited Company set up by sponsors Pharmalink Consulting. Taylor was given the backing of the board to continue as manager as the club returned to the Southern League after a 102 year absence, but after a mediocre start to the season Taylor left the club. Former Yeading manager Johnson Hippolyte, known as “Drax”, was appointed and had immediate success guiding the club to their first FA Cup First Round proper appearance in 35 years. The Magpies eventually lost 2-0 at home to Stafford Rangers in a replay in front of 1,934 people. Improvement in their league form took a little longer and in January 2007 the club occupied 18th place. However an amazing run of 12 wins from the final 14 league games saw the Magpies finish fourth and qualify for the play offs. The winning run then continued in the semi final at Kings Lynn with a 1-0 triumph and, in the final played four days later, the Magpies beat league runners-up Team Bath 1-0 at Twerton Park, Bath to return to the Conference South just a year after relegation.

BACK IN CONFERENCE SOUTH... Since returning to Conference South in 2007-08 season, Maidenhead have finished the season in 17th,

6th, 16th, 19th and 20th place. The 1st round proper of the FA Cup was reached in 2007 but the side were comprehensively defeated at Horsham by 4-1 in front of a 3,379 crowd. Maidenhead won the County Cup for the 20th time in 2010 defeating Wycombe Wanderers 3-2 at Marlow. In the summer of 2011, new perimeter railings were installed around the pitch surround and the shelter at the Bell Street end painted as the club endeavoured to improve their York Road home where they have now played for 141 years. A very promising 2011-12 pre-season campaign saw the club win all nine of their friendly matches scoring 31 goals and included victories against a Notts County XI and Hayes & Yeading United. This season also saw the club reach the 1st round proper of the FA Cup where they met Aldershot Town from League 2. This was the first time in their history that Maidenhead had been drawn at home to a league club in the competition proper. In front of a crowd of 2,281, the Magpies took the lead in the eighth minute through Anthony Thomas before the visitors secured a draw with a goal from Michael Rankine twelve minutes from the end. The Shots won the replay at the Recreation Ground ten days later by 2-0. On the field, the league season ended in bitter disappointment as despite a 4-3 win over Eastleigh thanks to Paul Semakula’s goal in the third minute of injury time, the club finished in 20th place and was relegated back to the Southern Premier. However, the demise of Kettering Town saw the Magpies reprieved and they will remain members of Conference South in 2012/13 season. The match at Sutton United on 25th August 2012 was manager Johnson “Drax” Hippolyte’s 300th game in charge, a total only exceeded by Len Townsend (473 games) and Alan Devonshire (349).

Defender Ben Wynter went from strength to strength during the victorious 2018/19 campaign, as he established himself as one of key components of United’s backline.

Wynter, 20, joined the club after spending 2017/18 with National League side, Bromley. He spent his youth career at Crystal Palace and he signed his first pro contract with the Eagles in 2016. Wynter has primarily played as a right-back, but can also play at centre-back. After notching his first goal for the club during the 4-0 home win over Slough Town in January, Ben secured his part in Yellow Army folklore by scoring the crucial stoppage-time leveller in the 3-3 draw away to title rivals Woking in April 2019.

Winger signed in the summer from Aldershot Town.

Shamir started his career at Brighton & Hove Albion where his goal scoring exploits for the youth team earned him a professional contract in 2012. He went onto appear for the Seagulls first team but spent most of his time on loan with Tonbridge Angels, Torquay United, Rochdale, Tranmere Rovers and Dagenham & Redbridge. In 2015 he spent a season at Crawley Town combined with a loan spell at Whitehawk. Shamir then moved to the Shots where has gained extensive National League experience.

Powerful striker signed in the summer from Hartlepool United.

A Welsh Under 19 and Under 21 cap, Jake started his career at Llandudno Junction, moving onto Airbus UK where he was spotted by Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2010. He was then farmed out on loan to make his Football League debut for the first of three spells at Tranmere Rovers. Eventually making 20 appearances for Wolves, after loan spells at Notts County and Southend United, Jake signed for Oldham Athletic. He has since also played for Guiseley and last season spent some time on loan from ‘Pools at Maidstone United.

IS AN ENGLISH FORMER PROFESSIONAL FOOTBALLER WHO IS THE CURRENT MANAGER OF MAIDENHEAD UNITED.

He was a wide midfielder who played for West Ham United, with whom he won the FA Cup in 1980, and Watford, where he finished his career in 1992. Devonshire won eight caps for England between 1980 and 1983. He subsequently became a manager with Maidenhead United, Hampton & Richmond Borough and Braintree Town.

Born in Park Royal, then a part of Middlesex, Devonshire had been a schoolboy footballer but had been turned away by Crystal Palace at age 14 for being too small. He returned to Selhurst Park two years later and played a couple of youth team games but was again released by the club, this time by former West Ham player and Palace manager, Malcolm Allison. Devonshire started playing for non-league Southall and in doing so came to the attention of league clubs such as Reading, Southampton, and Brentford. By day he worked as a fork-lift truck driver at the Hoover Factory in Perivale, Middlesex. During this time he was spotted playing for Southall by West Ham United scouts, Eddie Baily and Charlie Faulkner who recommended him to West Ham manager, Ron Greenwood. Devonshire signed for West Ham United in 1976 for a fee of £5,000, a transfer which has led to him being referred to as “West Ham’s best ever buy”.

Devonshire made his debut for West Ham on 27 October 1976 in a League Cup tie against Queens Park Rangers, in which West Ham lost 2–0. He made his League debut three days later on 30 October 1976 against West Bromwich Albion, where he played in a 3–0 defeat. He soon became a fans’ favourite, who referred to him by his nickname “Dev”. His workman-like attitude was one to which the fans could relate. He also enhanced his rapport with supporters by travelling to home game on the London Underground from his West London home.

Devonshire was selected to play for England by his former manager at West Ham, Ron Greenwood. He made his debut on 20 May 1980 in a 1–1 draw against Northern Ireland. Greenwood selected him again on 31 May 1980 in a friendly game against Australia, which England won 2–1.

Devonshire began his management career as manager of non-league club Osterley and Brentford Women. He then became the manager of Hampton & Richmond Borough in the Conference South. He was previously manager of Maidenhead United.

As manager of Hampton & Richmond, he took the club from Isthmian League Division One South to the play-off-final of the Conference South. In his first season, he guided them to fifth place in the Isthmian Division One South which due to re-organization of the leagues was enough to see the club promoted to the Isthmian League Premier Division. He then guided the club to a sixth-placed finish in their debut season at that level missing out on the play-offs on goal difference on the final day of the season. The 2005–06 season would see Devonshire take the team into the play-offs. Having won a dramatic play-off semi-final on penalties away to Heybridge Swifts the team then faced Fisher Athletic away who beat Hampton 3–0. Devonshire finally managed to get Hampton & Richmond Borough promoted the following season in style by bringing the Isthmian Premier Division title to the Beveree. In their debut season in the Conference South he has managed to guide his team to third place in the league and into the play-offs for the Conference National.

On 23 May 2011, Devonshire was appointed the manager of newly promoted Conference National club Braintree Town. Having declined the offer of a new contract, Devonshire left the club on 17 April 2015. He was appointed manager of one of his former clubs, National League South side Maidenhead United, on 5 May 2015.

A TRIP TO WORCESTER UNIVERSITY

The Barnet over 65’s have progressed amazingly well in just over a year, winning numerous round robins and recently defeating Leyton Orient 2-1 to reach the UK National Walking Football Finals which will be held on Sunday September 15th at Worcester University. We will battle it out to be one of the top 8 teams in the over 65’s category and as usual, we will be the smallest set up present and the only London team participating. We will be competing against teams such as Wigan, Nottingham, Norwich and Birmingham.

In a recent over 65’s tournament at Romford, the combined ages of our 7 man team that day was 514 YEARS OF WALKING FOOTBALLERS. An Average age of 73.43 and leading the way was both Sid Tobias and Bob Fisher.

On Friday September 27th, the over 65’s will visit Norwich for another round robin. We will be taking 2 teams, so if you think your days of football are over, think again, many are bringing their wives and staying on in Great Yarmouth for what will be an amazing social event as well as competitive walking football competition.

We also would like to congratulate our keeper and Bees fan, Bill Charge, who has been selected to train with the England over 70’s team.

We have at our sessions on Fridays probably the only double set of brothers playing walking football in the UK, the Krieger’s and the Kyprianou’s. If you would like to join them and the rest of us, please join us for walking football at The Hive on a Thursday evening or Friday afternoon.

AFTER RECENTLY MAKING HIS 400TH SENIOR APPEARANCE IN BETWEEN THE STICKS, WE SAT DOWN WITH BEES NUMBER ONE SCOTT LOACH TO GET HIS THOUGHTS ON HIS CAREER SO FAR.

LOACH TALKS HIS EARLY YOUTH LIFE, ENGLAND CALL UPS AND HOW FAR HE BELIEVES THIS BARNET TEAM CAN GO THIS YEAR IN AN EXTENDED PROGRAMME EXCLUSIVE.

Loach’s story begins like a number of goalkeepers, they begin their youth career playing outfield but inexplicably end up being brilliant in between the sticks. The first time the Nottingham born stopper went in goal, is a day that is still fresh in his memory.

“One day the keeper got injured and I ended up playing in goal, everything just hit me and I made loads of saves. The scouts turned to my father and said he’s not a striker, he’s a goalkeeper, to be honest I am not sure whether that was an insult or a compliment! In fairness I have been very lucky to have been a keeper from 8-years-old.”

“I was at Ipswich at eight years old and Richard Wright was the first team keeper, he is still one of my heroes and is someone I looked up to”

In his early days, things didn’t go completely the way of the now Bees number one, he left Ipswich as his family relocated back to Nottingham. There was a brief period where Loach felt his career had ended before it had even started.

“I remember Nottingham Forest academy were meant to be taking me on when we moved back, but it fell through, all my family were Forest fans and I was just sat in the car in tears thinking it was all over”

“Beyond that I grew up enjoying my school life, playing local football and thankfully I got back into the game when I joined Lincoln as a 15 year old. Now I can look back on it as one of the best things that ever happened to me.”

After rising through the ranks at Lincoln City, the keeper joined Aidy Boothroyd’s Watford side in 2006, as the Hornets were promoted to the Premier League. A step up that would become a huge part of Loach’s career.

“Watford took me on trial and I ended up playing four games in a matter of days and I kept clean sheets in all of them so it couldn’t have gone any better. At the end of it I was offered a four and a half year deal – I was chomping at the bit”

“As a young keeper I could watch what the likes of Ben Foster were doing and it gave me a massive insight on what I needed to be like to make it as a successful professional footballer”

The 2008/09 season was a breakthrough season for Loach, as he performed well enough to become The Hornets number one. Loach reflects on a game against Tottenham Hotspur as a stand-out moment from his time in Hertfordshire.

“I remember that night I made a save from Aaron Lennon, which to date is one of the best I have made in my career. That save announced myself to everyone, I had like 800 messages from home! It was then people realised, OK he is actually quite good!”

“It was like the Brentford game would have been like last year, it’s a brilliant atmosphere to be involved in. As a young kid playing against a team like Spurs I had nothing to lose.”

At the back end of Loach’s career at Vicarage Road, the keeper made several appearances for the under 21s before he got the call that every child dreams of – a call up to the three lions senior squad.

“Malky Mackay rang me and said “are you sitting down?” and then he broke the news, my face got all hot and tight, I just couldn’t stop smiling, I literally rang everyone I knew!”

“I get stick off Sparkesy in particular for this story! But I’d gone from a league cup game against Aldershot

to sitting down with Steven Gerrard at the breakfast table, whilst on international duty for England. It was all very surreal!”

“The one thing I learnt from that experience was how professional things are, it all sank into me of how hard they all worked, the extra stuff they did to ensure they were at the top level. That made me realise how much work I’d have to be in to be at that level of the professional game”

A move to Ipswich followed where Loach found himself out of the team after starting brightly. Several moves to football league clubs followed, but the once England hopeful only made a handful of appearances in two and a half seasons. It’s a time of his career where Loach for the first time felt very unsettled within the game.

“I found myself going out on loan wherever I could just to make sure I was playing, when I could just to keep playing games. In one sense it’s good but in another I never really felt settled, I went back to Notts County, my hometown club but they changed manager and I found myself out the team again.”

A move to Hartlepool followed where Loach made over 100 consecutive appearances for the club and picked up both the fans and players’ players awards. The Bees keeper labelled his time with Pool as the moment he feels helped him work his way back into the game.

“I love the game and I have always believed in my ability, but the only way I could prove that is by playing games. Hartlepool was a group of lads and I got on well with the fans, it really did help rekindle my love for the game, it was a great two years.”

“However, the minute I got the call from Darren, I knew immediately I was coming here. It has been the perfect move, for myself and my family who are so important to me. I have loved my time so far”

Loach has become an instant hero with the Bee Army and our number one was quick to highlight how happy he is with his opening month at The Hive

“I feel like I have been here just as long as everyone else. I have to put that down to the welcome I have received from everyone. Cal (Reynolds) and Dan (Sparkes) instantly made me feel welcome and everyone took to me.”

“I have a great relationship with the fans but I had to put in good performances, I feel like I have done that with my performances so far.”

“The fans pay my wages and the way they treat me is exactly what I want. We all have to work together, as they can win us game’s. If we work together we can achieve anything this year, more than people think we can”

Loach has been a pivotal part of the Bees solid start to the season and he feels his side are set up nicely to go on to achieve something this year. Starting with this afternoons clash with Maidenhead, the keeper believes another win would be the perfect start to September.

“This league is long, we have been consistent, and if we win these two games in hand we are right up there. If people see us in and around it, teams will fear us this year. Yes we will lose games but it’s making sure that when you do you bounce back with a win, if we do that then we will be there or there about’s this season.”

“I am a positive person, I will always encourage the boys when things don’t go our way. In football if you’re feeling good, you play well, I just want reflect my positivity on everyone around me”

On Monday new Bolton Wanderers signing Joe Bunney was involved in a car crash, which left him in hospital for several days with a few broken bones. The 25 year old defender only signed for the Trotters less than a week earlier, on 2nd September, and had not yet made his debut. He signed from Northampton Town on a free transfer on a deal set to last up until the end of the season. The incident took place on the M55 motorway, and resulted in a broken collar bone and several broken ribs. He had already made 6 appearances for the Cobblers this season before signing. This comes after Bolton received a 12 point deduction and were only saved from liquidation two weeks ago. The club said the Bunney will be kept in hospital for a few days as a “precautionary measure”.

As a punishment for breaching the FA’s betting rules, Leeds United player Jordan Stevens has been banned from all football related activity for six weeks. The 19 year old joined the Whites last season from Forest Green Rovers, and has made just one first team appearance to date. He has been banned for reportedly placing 59 separate bets last season, something that is prohibited to players and other club staff by the FA, of which five were on games involving Leeds. The suspension is set to last until 10th October. As well as the ban, the player has been handed a fine of £1,200. “We are hugely disappointed in the FA’s choice of sanction” said Angus Kinnear, the chief executive of Leeds. “To prevent a young footballer from taking part in any football activities at such a critical period of his career is a disproportionate punishment following a foolish mistake from a young player”.

What’s the Buzz?

W H A T ’ S T H E B U Z Z

This week has seen the draws for several cup competitions be made. Firstly was the Scottish Challenge Cup, which, for the second successive season, features two sides from the National League. Wrexham were held to a 1-1 draw against Ayr United last Saturday after a late equaliser, but went through to the next round after a 6-5 win on penalties. As a reward, they will now face St Mirren U21 at home in the fourth round. Meanwhile, Solihull Moors travelled to Fife to take on Kelty Hearts, where they also drew 1-1 before winning 4-2 on penalties. In the fourth round they will play at home to the winner of the third round tie between Northern Irish side Ballymena United and Rangers U21, which takes place this Wednesday. After this stage, there are two more rounds before the final.

The next draw to take place was Monday’s FA Cup second qualifying round draw. This also involved several of our local sides. Wealdstone were given an away tie at Farnborough, Haringey Borough will host Staines Town, and St Albans City will be at home to Worthing. Wingate and Finchley will travel to Essex to take on Maldon and Tiptree, Enfield Town will entertain Braintree Town while

Potters Bar Town have been given a home advantage against Hornchurch. Hendon have been drawn as the home side against Deeping Rangers, Cheshunt are on the road at Maidstone United, and Walthamstow are up against Abbey Rangers.

Meanwhile, the FA Vase second qualifying round draw took place since our last home game, and is taking place this weekend. Today North Greenford United take on Oxhey Jets, Cricklewood Wanderers host Long Buckby, and Hillingdon Borough travel to Harborough Town. Hillingdon FC are away at Buckingham Athletic, Wembley host Risborough Rangers and Colney Heath are at home to Haverhill Rovers. An Enfield derby will take place between Enfield 1893 and Enfield Borough, London Colney play against Baldock Town, Hackney Wick are on the road at Langford and Harefield United will entertain Rothwell Corinthians. Meanwhile Edgware Town host Eynesbury Rovers tomorrow.

Stevenage have parted company with their manager Dino Maamria, after a poor start to their season. The side are still yet to win a game, having only been able to draw three out of their opening seven games, losing the rest. The side also lost both of their cup games so far, Southend United

at home in the League Cup and MK Dons at home in the League Trophy. This form sees them in the relegation zone, two points off of safety, and two points off of bottom spot. Tunisian Maamria took over at the Hertfordshire club in March 2018, guiding the side to 16th place that season, before following it up with a 10th placed finish last season.

The club said the Bunney will be kept in hospital for a few days as a “precautionary measure”.

as there allegedly also being a song released mocking the miss. “[It was] one of the worst days of my life. I can’t even go outside because I didn’t expect this kind of hostility towards me” said the 31 year old defender, who plays his club football for Swiss side FC Zurich. “I did my job by stepping up as the captain to take the spot kick, I am really disappointed. But at the same time I wish to say sorry [and] beg for their forgiveness”.

Celtic have been charged by UEFA for offences committed by fans in a tie against AIK Stockholm two weeks ago. The tie was won 6-1 on aggregate by the Scottish side, after a 4-1 win in Sweden was followed up by a 2-0 win in Glasgow. The offences in question this time relate to some fans setting off fireworks in the ground as well as throwing objects and blocking stairways. Uefa’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body are set to will meet this week to decide the punishment on the matter. In 2017 a Celtic fan entered the pitch at Celtic Park and attempted to kick at Paris St-Germain striker Kylian Mbappe, which resulted in a £8,900 fine. Another incident that year saw Celtic again fined, this tine £20,600, after an “illicit banner” was displayed in the stadium during a Champions League qualifying game against Linfield

on betting”. In their statement, the FA Regulatory Commission said: “A warning alone would be insufficient to reflect the seriousness of such a breach given that the integrity of the game is potentially threatened by breaches of the FA’s betting rules”.

It was been revealed that the Premier Sports TV channel will now be broadcasting most Spanish La Liga matches live on its new LaLigaTV channel. The new deal will see them show most league games as well as a weekly highlights show, starting this month and running up until the end of the 2021/22 season. All of the games will be shown live, except those that kick off at 3pm UK time, which will be delayed and shown on the channel a few hours later. This comes after the previous rights holder of the contract, Eleven Sports, had cut short their agreement with the Spanish league at the end of last season, just one year into their agreed three year deal.

Fans who were angry at captain Umaru Bangura missing a penalty for Sierra Leone in stoppage time against Liberia have caused major damaged to the players house. The missed penalty meant that Sierra Leone lost the tie 3-2 on aggregate, therefore losing out on qualifying for the next stage of Africa’s world cup qualification process, whilst Liberia qualified instead. Stones were reportedly thrown at his house, damaging doors and windows, as well

Former Barnet player Keith Rowland has recently started on his second managerial role. Having made eight appearances in black and amber back in 2003, he joined Isthmian League North side Aveley at the end of August. This comes after a 2 ½ year spell at our local rivals Wingate and Finchley, where he guided the side to their two highest league finishes in their history, including an Isthmian League Premier playoff. The former 19 cap Northern Ireland international, who scored once on the international stage, was once subject to a £110,000 transfer to West Ham United. Other clubs on his playing CV include AFC Bournemouth , QPR and Luton Town.

Another play to be banned this week for betting related activity is Evertons Yerry Mina. Mina was fined £10,000 and picked up a major warning on his future conduct after he admitted to breaching the same FA rules. This came after he featured in a TV advert for betting company Betjuego in his native Colombia. In a statement, the Toffees said that the 24 year olds “command of the English language is limited” and that the defender did “not understand the information

So sad to hear of Junior’s untimely passing. In his brief time at Underhill, although he was nomadic throughout his career, appearing for some fifteen different clubs in England, Scotland and the USA. Indeed his 39 appearances for the Bees were supplanted only by his subsequent spells at Bristol Rovers and Nottingham Forest. Lightning quick, and on occasions, unstoppable, it was inevitable that he play at the top level, and he was proud to have represented Ghana. As a stroke survivor myself, I watched the excerpt of the BBC 4 documentary made two years ago, which concentrated on his speech. Junior collected framed shirts form his career, with Forest, Rovers and Barnet displayed alongside autographed Chelsea shirts, signed by Michael Essien and Didier Drogba. On hearing of Junior’s passing I thought of my own Ghanaian friends, including those at Edgware Methodist Church, which is less than a mile from the Hive.

Barnet visited Gigg Lane on nine occasions, most recently 2011, but never triumphed at the stadium. Sadly, as things stand, we may never get the opportunity again. Statistician Jon Errol laments that the Bees failed to score in eight out of nine visits whilst never scoring at the Manchester Road end of the ground. Interesting to read the Journeyman, the always entertaining Gregor Robertson as he visited the Shay, but used the current success of Halifax as succour, and comfort for a possible Bury Phoenix

club in the future. The photo was taken in happier times and their final ever game at Underhill, although we were not to know that. The FSA believes the Football Association should be the overall regulatory body, but I hope that Bury’s demise does not start a domino effect predicted at FSF Southern Division meetings some years ago.

Only Barnet has a thread inquiring as to Books which told the Bees story. Rightly , and focusing on several disparate eras in our history, the first suggestions included The Club that Wouldn’t Die by Tony Thornton Playing for Fun by the late Lester Finch and Big Fry, and I wonder who wrote that Autobiography. There is also more than one book focusing on the great Jimmy Greaves, whilst Ricky George wrote One Goal One Horse.

Off the pitch is the Players Guide for Welsh League games, and was once again available at both the LLandarcy Sports Centre, where a number of

teams play, and the smaller Cilfrew Wanderers Recreation Ground. On the page headlined Social Media Advice it says that the FAW may take disciplinary action over Implication of bias, questioning integrity, and personal or offensive comments. A cursory glance at the internet shows plenty of fans who would qualify on a weekly basis.

Recent games where I followed the Fate of the Bees included Wrexham {Radio Wales reckoned we dug in} and Torquay, which the Radio Devon reporter opined was “two contrasting halves and a fair result”. Then, after the Endsleigh game read the Non-League Paper when Ben Strevens was not happy, complaining “I know from refereeing training sessions how hard the job can be, but today I thought he lost control”. Ah poor Ben.

My memory may be playing tricks on me, but for some reason BBC Nationwide visited the town of our opponents in the seventies and Richard Stilgoe warbled a tribute to Maidenhead at the piano.

Whether Sir Richard has ever visited York Road, as I did for a friendly a few summers ago is not chronicled, but the Magpies recent 2-2 draw with the Robins, not only pleased keen ornithologists but showed that Barnet will have a tough task today.

Due to the fact that Eastleigh is an absolute trek from Leeds, me and my parents started our journey on Friday. We drove down south stopping to see some family friends in Oxford before going on to Newbury where we stayed overnight. This meant we could have a bit of a lie in on Saturday morning so we left Newbury at about midday and headed to Eastleigh. We stopped in Winchester en route which was a busy little place to get some lunch. When walking through the town, we bumped into other Barnet fans who’d obviously had the same thought! We left for the football and arrived at the ground around 2:15pm. Getting a club badge was a slightly harder task this week as Eastleigh’s club shop was in the home end but after some pleading, one of their stewards let me in to buy one. This meant we could finally make our way to the away end where we were sat for 2:30pm. As the away end filled up, the teams were ready for kickoff.

We actually started the game pretty strongly with some early attacking football from the likes of Jack Taylor, Simeon Akinola and Ephron Mason-Clark. Our positive play was rewarded on 16 minutes when Jack Taylor banged an absolute beauty in the top corner from the edge of the box. Although we carried on strongly, Eastleigh started to settle into the game more, meaning it was a more two sided game. However, nothing else came of the first half. The second half saw Eastleigh come out stronger as a block by Harry Taylor and then Santos kept their efforts away. The game became more physical and on 70 minutes, McKnight equalised for Eastleigh. The final 20 minutes saw more drama with their team getting volatile and on 85 minutes Smart received a second yellow card for diving, reducing the opposition to 10 men. We were going forward with chance after chance with a particularly good one on 89 minutes that their goalie saved. With 5 minutes added time I was shaking, hoping that we would find a winner. On 94 minutes we were rewarded and we were buzzing. Shaq was able to receive a cross and slam it into the goal giving us our well deserved winner. The remaining minute saw Eastleigh try their luck and my nerves were grateful when the ref blew for full time giving us the 3 points. Darren Currie came jumping over to the fans and it was clear that both the fans and the team were overjoyed with the win.

We headed back to the car and made our way up north. I was then dropped in Peterborough around 8:30pm to celebrate a friend’s birthday. Despite it being a weekend of awkward travelling, it was made worth it by a thoroughly deserved 3 points. The 94th minute winner definitely made it my favourite game of the season so far

TTHE BEES MADE IT TWO FA WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP WINS IN A ROW WITH AN EXCELLENT DISPLAY AGAINST COVENTRY UNITED AT THE HIVE AS THEY SECURED A 2-1 VICTORY.

In a frantic first half, Taylor O’Leary put Lee Burch’s side in front before Hughes equalised for the visitors.

However, five minutes before the break Lauren Pickett scored a superb solo goal to gain the Bees all three points against the newly-promoted side.

The Bees started the game on the front foot and almost took the lead when Bonnie Horwood forced Sian Wood into a good save from a corner kick.

Up the other end, Quantrill made a good stop as Hughes bared down on goal one-on-one after a slick Coventry counter-attack.

On 18 minutes the Bees found the breakthrough as O’Leary powerfully met Megan Alexander’s delightful whipped free-kick, the header flew into the back of the net leaving Wood with no chance.

Despite the confidence-boosting start. the visitors fought back and levelled as Hughes fired a powerful shot into the bottom corner.

Burch’s side responded well to conceding the leveller and retook the lead just five minutes before the break, as Pickett danced through the United defence and coolly rounded Wood, to slot home and restore our advantage.

After a quality first half of football, the second was a slightly more cautious affair, as the visitors looked to get back on terms.

Quantrill was called into action within 30 seconds of the restart as she excellently denied three onrushing Coventry attackers by pouncing on the loose ball from a dangerous low cross from the left-hand side.

With 25 minutes to go, the Bees were handed a golden chance to wrap up the three points, as Pickett was brought down in the penalty area and the referee made no hesitation when pointing to the spot. Whinnett stepped up and saw her penalty saved by Wood who guessed the right way to deny the striker from her second goal in as many matches.

With just seven minutes to play the visitors piled on the pressure, without mustering a further clear cut opportunity on the Bees goal. Axten saw a free-kick turned round the post, whilst up the other end, Pickett had a great chance to net a second but got her shot from 12 yards went wide of the left-hand post.

The Bees secured all three points, meaning they have two wins from their opening three matches and sit fourth in the FA Women’s Championship following this afternoons triumph.

Burch will now look to build on this impressive start as we travel to the East Midlands to take on Leicester City Women next Sunday (15th September).

Q: Biggest game you have played in?

I played for England under 21s against Portugal at Wembley that was a special night, playing on the world stage. It’s a night that meant a lot to me personally.

Q: Most memorable save?

I saved a penalty for Ipswich at Portman Road that was really special as I had gone back there and it wasn’t a bad save either!

Although I made a point blank save against Greece u21s when playing for England, we won 1-0 in the end so that was a really good moment.

Q: Best goalkeeper you have worked alongside?

Joe Hart or Ben Foster: Joe was a really hard worker, Ben was a freak of nature – he is unbelievably naturally talented!

What’s your ambitions for this season?

I want to play as many games as I can and help the team achieve our goals. With the team we have there is absolutely no reason we can’t make the play-offs or beyond.

Favourite moment in a Barnet shirt so far?

The win against Notts County was really special, I made a good save at 1-1 so to contribute to a win in front of my family so it was really nice.

I loved the Eastleigh win, some will say I reacted the wrong way but I’m a winner and I want to win!
