Barnaby Lockwood Professional and Employability 2 Blog October 26 th , 2017 A film I saw that really influenced me this year was Good Time (2017), directed by Ben and Josh Safdie. The film is a crime tragedy, following quick-witted, desperate but unsuccessful Connie Nikas (Robert Pattinson) as he tries to rescue his brother, Nick, from prison and hospital after a bank heist goes wrong. Many things about this film stood out to me, the first being the cinematography. There are lots of really uncomfortably long takes that are incredibly close-up with a drastically shallow depth of field. The effect of this in the film is that we focus completely on him, despite the fact that the character goes down a route that we probably wouldn’t naturally sympathise with as an audience. This links into the other thing that I found really interesting about the film, which is its narrative point of view. The film unfolds in what I think is a really unique way. We follow Connie as he attempts to rob a bank, which goes wrong, yet at this point we are sympathising with him, as we see his relationship with his brother as his driving motivation. As the narrative picks up we see Nick less however, and we are left with Connie doing some really immoral things. We are still routing for him however as our perspective of the story is tunnelled through Connie’s perspective. We realise only in the very last shot in the film that Nick is better without Connie, and that he was actually a destructive force in the film, selfishly ruining everything for everyone around him. I found this to be a really compelling way to tell a story and I took a lot from this film in terms of writing especially regarding how to communicate the author’s point of view, and how you can mislead the audience in order to create alternative audience reactions. November 29 th , 2017 I went to Aesthetica Short Film Festival in November 2017. I saw a huge range of films of different standards, from student films to professional shorts. I was expecting to enjoy the dramas the most, and that is what I had planned on seeing the most of. However among my favourite of the films I saw at Aesthetica were Transitions and Through Broken Frames. This is the nature of a film festival; that you end up seeing lots of things you didn’t plan to due to availability of seating at screenings or purely logistical problems. Transitions in particular was a fascinating film, showing a journey into Las Vegas, starting from the rural desert that surrounds it. I expected it to be a very boring, as it was comprised of a number of incredibly slow tracking shots along roads, gradually making it’s way into the city. Aurele Ferrier, the filmmaker, used really long takes and muted droning sounds to create a wonderfully eerie and surreal atmosphere. I wouldn’t previously have expected this to be the sort of film I would consider making, although after watching it, I was reminded of similar sequences I greatly admire in drama-driven Screenshot from Good Time (2017), demonstrating the use of cinematography.
