ERIOPHORUM GRACILE ROTH IN IRELAND We have had some correspondence about Mr Stelfox's note in the January 1970 issue

of this Journal (16: 282), on "A possible early record for Eriophorum gracile by C. C. Babington".

This specimen had already been examined by Dr S. M. Walters in 1966 at the

request of Mr D. McClintock and found to be a small specimen of E. angustifolium. This is stated on p. 361-2 of this Journal (15, October 1970) in a note headed "Eriophorum gracile Roth: New to Ireland".

Therefore the records made by the Botanical Society of the British Isles Field Meeting from Creggduff, Roundstone, in July 1966, and Dr Rose and Mr McClintock at the same site in September 1966, still stand as the first records for the species Eriophorum gracile Roth in Ireland.

GEOLOGICAL NOTE IRISH NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR GEOLOGY: STRATIGRAPHICAL STANDING

COMMITTEE

An Irish National Committee for Geology was established by the Royal Irish Academy in 1968 and a year later itself set up a Stratigraphical Standing Committee. The

membership of the latter is now as follows: Professor G. F. Mitchell (Chairman), Professor J. C. Brindley, Professor C. H. Holland (Secretary), Dr R. R. Home, Dr G. D. Sevastopulo, and Dr C. Williams. It is hoped to add an additional member from the Geological Survey of Northern Ireland. The Stratigraphical Standing Committee will hold two stated meetings per year on the third Friday in May and November.

There is some danger that the spate of stratigraphical activity in Ireland may result in a confused and inconsistent nomenclature. Guide lines and a spirit of co-operation are

required. The Stratigraphical Standing Committee intends to discuss problems of stratigraphical classification and nomenclature and other related matters sent to it by the National

Committee for Geology, the Geological Survey of Ireland, and any interested individual

research workers and other professional geologists. The purpose of this note is to make such

individuals aware of the existence of this recently organised committee. Letters should be

addressed to the Secretary at Department of Geology, Trinity College, Dublin 2.

ZOOLOGICAL NOTE BARN OWL, TYTO ALBA (SCOPOLI), PELLETS FROM CO. WICKLOW

On 31st May 1970, 438 gm (dry weight) of barn owl pellets and pellet fragments were collected at a roost in a ruin at Greenane, Co. Wicklow (T 1487). On analysis these

proved to contain the remains of 225 field mice, Apodemus sylvaticus (L.), 30 house mice, Mus musculus L., 7 brown rats, Rattus norvegicus (Berkenhout), 39 pygmy shrews, Sorex

minutus L., and 3 birds. Greenane is situated at the end of Glenmalure in which there is

both woodland and agricultural land. There are a number of houses in the vicinity of the

roost and the Avonbeg River flows nearby. As such terrain would be suitable for all the

mammals taken, the results deserve no further comment.

17th Annual Ir!sh Bird Feixwt, 1969. Price 20p. 1st Dublin and North Wicklow Bird Report, 1969. Price 15p.

Published by the Irish Wild Bird Conservancy, c/o. Royal Irish Academy. 19 Dawson Street, Dublin 2.

During 1969 Irish ornithologists were mostly concerned with work on the "Atlas of

Breeding Birds", a project instrumental in giving required impetus to probe localities which

would otherwise have been less specifically covered. Consequently our knowledge of breeding

distribution now stands greatly enriched. Until now there has been a big deficiency in data

regarding this aspect of field ornithology, even among our common species,
