Your District Governor’s Message Lions of District 24C,

HAPPY SPRING. I hope you are enjoying the warmer days and the longer days of spring. This is a great time to get outside, tend those flower and vegetable gardens and enjoy this beautiful world with all its wonders. What a beautiful time as the flowers begin blooming, the trees bud out, the birds fill the trees and the earth fills with new life.

Spring is a great time to think about our Lions environmental projects as we pick up the trash along our

highways and waterways, plant trees, mend and plant flower beds, etc. It feels good just to get outside and do something. Report what you are doing for your Centennial Service Challenge credits.

As we grow closer to the end of the four year Centennial Celebration, we want to encourage you to complete projects or programs in each of the five Centennial Service Challenge areas; Vision, Engaging the Youth, Feeding the Hungry, Protecting the Environment and Diabetes. Also, time is growing short to complete Legacy projects during the Centennial celebration. Be sure to report your Centennial Challenge and Legacy projects on MYLCI so you will be credited for your service.

By this time, hopefully all our club nominating committees have selected the candidates for your club officers for next year. You should plan to complete your elections in April and complete the PU-101 reports to LCI no later than May 15. You can complete your incoming officer report on the MYLCI site or by filling out the written report and sending it to LCI by May 15. Lion Vicki Davies is working on plans for our district incoming officers schools and additional training opportunities are available online at www.lionsclubs.org and at the state convention. This training will provide the tools a new club officer needs in order to be effective in their club roles. We hope that all new club officers will take advantage of these valuable training opportunities.

For the first year I am aware of, we not only filled all five of our Regional Lions Leadership Institute slots but had the opportunity to send a sixth Lion to this training. Lions, Lion Donalda Lovelace of the Lake of the Woods Lioness Lions, and Lions Rick Rappaport and David Shull both of the Lake of the Woods Lions on completing this years RLLI. This is a great training opportunity for our future leaders. If you have an interest in attending next year’s RLLI, please contact your Zone Chair or District Governor after the start of next Lions year.

As always, we continue to stress MEMBERSHIP. We need to work to keep the members we have, engage them and keep them involved. We also must always be working to identify prospective members and recruit new members so we can continue to do our projects and serve our communities effectively. Remember, in order to get new members, we have to be willing to invite members of our community to be a Lion. I ask that each club in the district add at least one additional net new member by the end of the year.

The 2018 State Convention this year is being held at the Crossing Hotel in Glen Allen, just north of Richmond. The convention will be held from May 17-20. Convention information and registration forms are attached to this addition of the BARK of the "C" Lion and have been mailed to all Lions clubs. This information and forms are also available at the www.lionsofvirginia.org website, click on State Convention. This will be a great convention with opportunities for networking with fellow Lions and excellent programs are being planned for you. We have a contested race for endorsement for International Director from Virginia so we should have some great hospitality rooms. I hope that all clubs will certify their delegates and have them in attendance at the convention. Come and plan to have a great time together as we celebrate our service.

If you are interested in attending a great Lions celebration and party, plan to attend the International Convention. This year it is being held in Las Vegas. Information and registration forms are available by going to www.lionsclubs.org and click on the LCICON link. Come celebrate with tens of thousands of fellow Lions from all over the world.

MEMBERSHIP AND CLUB REPORTS (April 2018)

Broadway Membership: 40 (February) On 2/13/18 we hosted several teachers from John C. Myers Elementary School in Broadway who spoke to us about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Scott Showalter - Autism Teacher, Jill Rice -Speech & Language Pathologist, Holly Blais - Pre-K Teacher, and Janna Grandle - 4th grade teacher and parent of a child with Autism all spoke. On 2/27/18 - Bryan Hutcheson, Sheriff of Rockingham County, spoke on various topics regarding what has been going on in 2017. Several of our Club members attended the Mid-Winter Conference on 2/3/18 at the Best Western Hotel in Culpeper, VA. Lions Dawn and Vivian Turner, Dianne Plunkett, Larry Bowman, Chuck and Mary Beth Schwab, and DG John Knepper all att6ended. Charlottesville Host Membership: 34 (February) On 2-6-2018 Beth Barber, executive director, presented a program on Olli-Osher Lifelong Learning Institute; they have university-level short courses for active adults. On 2-20-2018 Cherri Campbell presented a program on service dogs; Warren retrievers are used for PTSD-Diabetic Alert-Seizure Response-Autism Service Dogs. Four of our Lions worked at the Local soup kitchen and donated 32 volunteer hours; 150 people were served. Winter Conference was atte4nded by our president, secretary, and VP. Average Monthly Attendance: 100. Charlottesville Lioness Membership: 22 (February) Mary Anna Dunn, Director of The Enrichment Alliance of Virginia, spoke to the Club; their non-profit organization provides out-of-school time activities for under-served youth, especially deaf or hearing impaired. Our Lioness Club donated $309 to purchase a camera to be used in a digital photography class for The Enrichment Alliance of Virginia. Area under-served hearing impaired youth will benefit. Average Monthly Attendance: 95%. New Members and Sponsors: Rhonda Corbin - sponsor: Nancy Gibson. Edinburg Membership: 14 (February) Our 70th Annual Charter Night Dinner/Silent Auction was held on Saturday, March 10th at 6 pm at the Edinburg Fire Hall. Average Monthly Attendance: 70. Front Royal Membership: 22 (February) On February 13 our Guest speaker was Lion Staci Seebold-Collins, who is the District 24-C Leo Chairman. She spoke about the procedures for sponsoring a Leo club. The Front Royal Christian Academy is considering forming a club. After the presentation, our club passed a motion to support sponsoring a Leo Club and to determine how much interest there is at the school. We purchased a refurbished Spot Machine and new printer for $2,105.30; we hope to use it at the Wellness Fair in April. We paid $195 for 2 hearing aids. The club collected 83 pounds of canned food this month for C-CAP. The bench has arrived and we will have a dedication March 14th at the Warren County Middle School. International Dues were paid on 1/15/2018 in the amount of $510.65. Winter Conference was attended by two members (Lions PDG Ray and Micki McDonald.) Average Monthly Attendance: 75.

Gordonsville Membership: 17 (February) This month has been busy; we are preparing for the Miss Orange County Contest by asking businesses to sponsor ads in our program. This ad income goes towards scholarships the girls will be given when they attend college. This is strictly PR for the club, as we break even most of the time. We continue to sell brooms, pecans, raffle tickets and sponsorships for Miss Orange County Contest. Our Club donated $200 to Leader Dog and $400 to the Sight and Hearing Mobile Unit. We donated $200 each to Virginia Lions Hearing Foundation, and Bland Music Contest. We donated $300 each to Lions of Virginia Foundation and to RAM/Lamp. We also donated $200 to LCIF for diabetes awareness. Winter Conference was attended by our President and Secretary. Average Monthly Attendance: 50. Lake of the Woods Lioness Membership: 83 (March) The program for March was speaker Kim Sawyer representing A Better Move concerning Senior Move Management. Kim spoke on aspects of moving, including downsizing and reorganizing for seniors. We had a Used Book Sale and made $502. The Amore Dinner Dance made over $7,700. Safe House collections continued for the month of February. The Lioness Club continues to provide weekly support to LOW Lions both in the recycle center and at the Wilderness Food Pantry. Winter Conference was attended by our President and VP. Average Monthly Attendance: 73% Louisa County Membership: 35 (February) The Club hosted the Zone Meeting. The Club approved an application for assistance for eye testing and eyeglasses. We approved three applications for assistance for hearing testing and hearing aids. The Club is supporting the Louisa County Education Foundation by sponsoring a hole ($250) in their upcoming Golf Tournament. Average Monthly Attendance: 50. McGaheysville/Massanutten Membership: 48 (February) At our Board Meeting on 2/6/18 we discussed Standardized Club/LOMFI Procedures, including handling of mail and the prioritizing ordering Memorial pavers; the Board decided that all former Club members are eligible to have pavers at the Memorial, and we will order at least 6 pavers at a time (for economy.) The Board approved a donation to the Bland Scholarship Fund in honor of Sharon Bloomquist to be presented on March 25th. We also approved replacing Lion Road Signs on Rt.33 and Resort Dr. Our Aging-In-Place (AIP) General meeting in January included a potential for up to 8 new members; we plan to establish an AIP “Needs Assessment” document and then an “Implementation Plan.” The Regular Meeting on 2/20/18 was a Volunteers Appreciation Dinner. LOMFI Pres. Lion Trish, called the welcomed members and guests, including Jeff Reid of Massanutten Resorts and Kevin Frazier, a LOMFI volunteer and MPOA Board representative. She reviewed successes of the past year. New District 24L Zone Chair, Lion Mary Propst, introduced curre4nt DG Lion John Knepper who spoke briefly on volunteering and the importance of new members. He praised the effort it took to complete our new memorial park Our main fundraiser continues to be weekly bingo which required 32 Lions and 269 Lion hours; $1,762 was raised this month and served 136 people. Our Lions continue to read for Valley Voice, a reading service for the blind and vision impaired (through WMRA radio at JMU); the service is also carried on public access cable TV; 15 Lions worked 59 Lion hours and served 4,000 people. Winter Conference was attended by our President and Secretary. Average Monthly Attendance: 50. Monterey: Membership: 16 (February) On Feb.12th we had our Regular meeting. On Feb. 26th was our Director’s meeting. Maple Festival is next month. We sent 13 pairs of eyeglasses to Roanoke recycle facility. Our Club bought eyeglasses for a member of the community. Several members delivered Meals on Wheels. Several members participated in a fund raiser for a member of the community involved in a traffic accident. Average Monthly Attendance: 94.

(March) Our regular meeting was cancelled because of snow. We had our Director's meeting on 3-26-18. The Maple Festival was on March 10 & 11 and March17 & 18. 5 pairs of eyeglasses were sent to Roanoke Eyeglass Recycle Facility. We paid part of the cost of a hearing aid for an older resident of the community. Several member delivered Meals on Wheels. Another member helped with VPAS activities. New Market Membership: 11 (February) On February 26, 2018 Lion Paul Wiseman gave our members a program on the new 2018 Federal tax law changes; as everyone seemed to be in the dark, we all benefited. Average Monthly Attendance: 82%. Staunton Membership: 36 (February) DG Lion John Knepper was the guest speaker at our meeting on Feb. 5th. He reviewed changes LCI is adding to their support programs and of course increasing the membership in Clubs. He thanked us for supporting him this year. Our Lions Club is selling Lion David’s pins that he collected over the years; so far he has collected $107 for them. Staunton Lions delivered 191 pairs of eyeglasses, 136 lenses, and 37 pairs of sunglasses to the Roanoke eyeglass recycling center; this project is an ongoing monthly service. We also delivered 46 eyeglass cases. Our Club will collect school supplies at the March meeting on the March 5th. International Dues were paid on 1/20/18 in the amount of $634.25. Winter Conference was attended by our President, Secretary, and VP. We have collected $45 for Leader Dog thus far using the quarter cards. Our Club will order a Melvin Jones award this year and will resent it at Charter night. This is a first for the Woodrow Wilson Lioness Lions Club that merged with us. Strasburg Membership: 17 (February) DG Lion John Knepper presented a program for us this month. Broom sales earned $25. We donated $300 to sponsor our Little League baseball team. International Dues were paid on 01/17/2018 in the amount of $365.50 Average Monthly Attendance: 53. Timberville Membership: 28 (February) We reviewed plans for our White Cane Day in April, our tenderloin sandwich sale in March/April, and our LOVF sales in March. Average Monthly Attendance: 56. Winchester Host Membership: 85 (February) 2/6 – DG John Knepper; Lion Bryan Biddle – Delivering Internet to Rural Areas 2/13 – Nancy Mango from Bright Futures 2/20 – Mark Seiffert, Executive Director of Literacy Volunteers 2/27 – Business Meeting – installed 4 new members Broom Sales earned $122. Eyeglasses and exams provided - $925 (8 people served). Participated in the Wellness Festival on Feb. 24. Screened 121 people for sight and hearing. International Dues were paid on Jan 31 in the amount of $1,677. Average Monthly Attendance: 56. New Members and Sponsors: Rod Sawyers - sponsor: Fred Riley; Jim Calloway - sponsor: William Shendlow; Bill Meiers - sponsor: Jules Bacha; and Christine Germeyer - sponsor: David Andre' Winchester Shawnee Membership: 31 (February) The Winchester Shawnee Lions Club worked with the Clarke County and Winchester Host Lion Clubs to sponsor the Community Wellness Festival on 2/24/18, in Winchester at the Apple Blossom Mall; 121 people were served and 445 Lions worked for 10 hours. Our Club paid $380 to Pearl Vision (eyeglasses) and $120 to Winchester Eye Specialist (eye exams). We made a $310 donation to the Hearing Foundation in the city of Winchester. We also made a $200 donation to the Children First organization, and a $300 donation to

Complete refresher training is required of every technician once every two years

the Big Brothers-Big Sisters also in Winchester. Our club donated $165 to the Boy Scouts in Winchester, VA. and also $70 to the Apple Blossom organization in Winchester . Winter Conference was attended by our President and Secretary. (March) The Winchester Shawnee Lions Club made a $300 donation to the C-Cap (Congregational Community Action Project) organization in the city of Winchester, Virginia. Woodstock Membership: 31 (February) The Woodstock Lions Club raised $146 from the sale of brooms during January. We collected 81 pairs of eyeglasses from various locations within the community. The Club donated $120 for eye examinations and $60 to purchases eyeglasses for individuals in need of assistance. Our Lions Club collected two pairs of eyeglasses from within the community, and we donated $300 to sponsor a little league team. Average Monthly Attendance: 39. Lions Butch Boaz and Kevin Black, visited the Luray Lions and the Weyer's Cave Lions Club during the Month of January.

Lions of Virginia Foundation

The Lions of Virginia Foundation is OUR foundation. Established in 1972 to assist with emergency disaster relief,

promote sight and hearing conservation and other areas emphasized by Lions Club International in Virginia, LOVF

has distributed over $1.3 million in grants. It has helped with flood, hurricane and tornado relief. Funds have been

distributed through a variety of community grants as well as helping individuals in our state.

All this has been possible because of YOU. Your support, through the annual sale of raffle tickets and the LOVF

Distinguished Humanitarian Recognition awards, has allowed LOVF to award the grants. You support the

foundation which then is able to support your community which then supports your lions’ club and the circle

continues.

For years, our clubs have been selling raffle tickets. It is a great fundraiser for clubs. The tickets are $1. There are

no up-front costs and the club keeps $20 per book of tickets. The remaining $10 is sent LOVF to support grants.

The LOVF Distinguished Humanitarian Recognition award is a special way to honor an individual or organization for

From District 24C Global Service Team Coordinator

As 24C GST, my task it to encourage Clubs report their service projects. As a PDG in this District I know the work that all

of the Clubs do for those in need in this District. I have seen you in action and I have visited all but one club in the

District and heard your talk of the work you are doing. As you have heard there is push to serve 200 Million by 2021.

That is a pretty tall order but may be easier that we think. After reviewing the Club Health Assessment Reports from LCI

and hearing from other GST in the other 5 districts, it is obvious to us that what we need more than anything is to get

credit for what we already do.

As we begin 2018 and the second half of our Lions year, I am asking that each person reading this short article take some

action…. EVERY LION.

If you are a:

- Club President…are you absolutely certain your projects are being reported to LCI? - Club Secretary…are you reporting your service projects each and every month? Not just to 24C, but to LCI as

well? - Club Service project leader…are you providing the necessary statistics to the secretary to make the report to

LCI? - Lion….have you reported all of your hours and service projects to your Secretary and followed up to make

sure all of your time is reported? - Zone chair….are you following up each month to see that the reports are being submitted.

While I am not a clairvoyant…. I can see a lot of you sipping your morning coffee and nodding your head in the

affirmative. Don’t take this for granted…you need to follow up and here is why you need to take action.

In reviewing the monthly reports from LCI it is obvious that many clubs still do not submit monthly service reports to LCI.

Consider these numbers:

13 clubs have not submitted activity reports to LCI in more than 24 months

16 clubs have not submitted activity reports to LCI in the past 12 months

28 clubs did not submit report in November

25 clubs did not submit report in October

I could understand Clubs not reporting electronically when LCI switched from paper reports to computer entered

reports. I could understand that some clubs thought they only need to complete the report thru the 24C website. I could

understand when the internet was young! But not now….there is no valid excuse….NONE.

Before we talk about doing more projects to increase the numbers We Serve. We need to get credit for what we already

do. Please, ask, question, make waves. Document and report!

Virginia Blood Services needs 400 donors a day to meet the demand of more than 20 area hospitals. In order to meet

this goal, we need your help. If you are a small business or organization, join our Adopt-a-Cot Program and support

lives throughout Virginia.

We realize that not every organization can commit to hosting a blood drive, so Virginia Blood Services makes is easy and

convenient to give back to our community by making a commitment to fill our donor center beds with members of your

group.

Joining is simple.

Pledge to fill a cot with blood donors at one of our community donor centers and receive recognition for your

organization’s dedication to helping local patients.

Commitment is flexible.

We will work with you to tailor the program to best suit your employees and members. Commit your organization to one

WELCOME TO THE 95TH VIRGINIA STATE LIONS CONVENTION! Please make plans NOW to be part of an exciting convention that will be held May 17-20, 2018, at the Crossing Hotel in Glen Allen, Virginia. Visit the convention website: www.valions.org/convention.

The 2018 State Convention hotel offers us elegant and modern convention facilities, and is large enough to house everyone under one roof. It has a campus atmosphere. The single and double rate per day is $135.00 plus taxes and includes FREE parking and FREE Wi-Fi. You must make your reservations directly with the hotel by April 17, 2018. Please call the hotel reservations at 1-804-727-1400. Make sure that you identify yourself as a Lion attending the 2018 Virginia State Convention.

The Convention registration desk will be open from 3:00 PM – 5:00 PM on Thursday, May 17, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM on Friday and Saturday, May 18 and 19. The delegates must register and be certified by the Credential Committee no later than 5:00 PM on Saturday, May 19, to be eligible to vote. For your convenience the Registration desk and the Credential Desk are located in the Hotel registration area.

Pre-registration for the convention and related events is strongly advised. Reservations are advance basis only. Meal tickets will not be available at the door. Please mail the meal registration form and payment as early as possible. The deadline date is May 5, 2018. Although there are restaurants in the Glen Allen area, they are quite busy on Friday and Saturday. Therefore, we encourage everyone to register for the planned meals. All Lions (delegates and non-delegates), Lioness, Leos, spouses and guests should pre-register.

The $20.00 per person, prior to April 17, 2018, $25.00 per person after April 17, 2018, registration fee includes an Official Identification badge, which allows you admission to all the Hospitality suites, Bland Competition, and the special VIP reception, honoring Lions Club International Director Lion Jerome Thompson on Saturday prior to the banquet, a 2018 Convention Lapel Pin, and the 2018 official State convention program.

Dress code for the Banquet will be semi-formal. The Council would like the banquet attire to be white jacket and

semi-formal / cocktail dresses for ladies. It is up to you how you would like to dress for the Banquet, but it should be

semi-formal.

The 2018 Virginia Lions State Convention will be held at the The Crossing Hotel, Glen Allen, Virginia. The

Varina Lions Club is hosting the convention.

Lions Clubs, Exhibitors and Pin Traders may obtain exhibit space in the Ash Grove Ballroom. Spaces will be

available on Thursday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Friday and Saturday from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM each day.

Rental of a 3' x 6' skirted table and space will be $40.00 for Lions Clubs, Lioness, Leos and Pin Traders. Commercial space rental for all three days will be $135.00. Money for the space must accompany your

All tables and exhibit space must be arranged through the 2018 Virginia Lions State Convention. In order that we

may properly meet your needs, you must advise in writing before April 30, 2018, if exhibit space is desired.

There will be Hors d’oeuvres and live entertainment and a cash

bar. It will be in the Tavern, at the Convention

Hotel.

Time 6:30PM – 9:00PM

If you decide to have something from their menu you can order,

but that cost will be on your own.

Live entertainment will be provided by a local band, music from

the 60’s, 70’s, and even earlier.

We will also have a drawing that evening; tickets will be

sold during the festivities. The drawing will take place around 8:30PM.
