BARDIA PUBLIC SCHOOL 37 Arthur Allen Drive BARDIA NSW 2565 9605 2459 Term 2 – Week 8 2019 Message from the Principal Dear members of the Bardia Public School community, We need your help! Because our school is growing so quickly it is becoming very difficult when planning and allocating resources. It would help tremendously if you could let the school know: Do you have a child starting kindergarten in 2020? While the school community had a win with all parties agreeing to fast track traffic lights at the intersection of Arthur Allen Drive and MacDonald Road, we will have a dangerous intersection to deal with for at least 18 months! One proposal that has been put forward is to connect the traffic islands running down the middle of MacDonald Road and block all right hand turns into and out of Arthur Allen Drive. This would be an annoying inconvenience for us all, but it would make the intersection much safer. It would also mean that if you were coming from the Ingleburn end of MacDonald Road you would have to turn right at the Bardia Avenue roundabout and turn up Damascus Street or Malaya Street. Also, it will not be long now until the cement bollards at the Arthur Allen Drive / Malaya Street intersection will be removed. This will provide another route and our long-suffering friends living in Ingleburn Gardens who will at last have another way of getting to school (one that avoids Campbelltown Road). A correct school uniform is a great way to have our students take pride in their school and themselves! Without you, the parents and carers, making sure your child comes to school every day in the correct school uniform, very quickly our excellent standards of uniform would disappear. Term 2 – Week 8 – 2019

Message from the Principal

Dear members of the Bardia Public School community,

We need your help! Are you struggling to help your child with their English? For a very large number of you English is your second language, and many of our native English speakers have never studied English grammar. This makes helping your child difficult. Here are a couple of tips:

1. Macquarie Fields TAFE conducts English classes. 2. Duolingo is a free app (the version with advertisements). It is a terrific way to learn English. 3. Read English even if it is a child’s book and look up one word in a dictionary every day!

My next piece of advice may seem odd given what I just wrote above. If your child is using a language at home other than English, make sure they learn it formally and properly! There are lots of Saturday language schools around for your children. Research has found that the worst thing we can do for our bilingual students is to let them develop as bad communicators in either language. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Matters involving students leaving the school at 3.00pm: Many parents are unsure about the school's responsibilities toward their children after 3.00pm. In short, at 3.00pm the responsibility for your children is yours. There is one exception, bus duty. Bus duty (escorting children onto the bus) will continue as normal. Note that teachers volunteer their own time to do bus duty. It is your responsibility to collect your child at 3.00pm. Students are not permitted to remain at school after 3.00pm. There is NO supervision available. If on the very rare occasion you are running late because of some unavoidable event, such as a car accident, you must ring the office long before 3:00pm. If your lateness is going to be a regular occurrence you should enrol your child in the Before and After School Care. Parents may of course give their children permission to travel home without supervision. My advice here is that the child should be old enough and responsible enough to do this safely. Every day we have many parents and carers ringing the school in the afternoon with a change of plans about how their child is to get home. While we will do our best to make sure this message gets to your child, the office is extremely busy in the late afternoon and we cannot guarantee the message will reach your child. You changing the pick up plans should be VERY RARE. If you are going to change pick up plans, please organise this with your child in the morning. The period between now and when old Macdonald Road (Malaya Road) will be converted into a kiss 'n' ride and a parking area (at least 12 months) is going to involve more difficulties for us all. Daily there are incidents where our students are almost hit by cars as they cross the road with their parents. Also, there have been several students almost hit by cars driven by parents and carers from this school. PLEASE DRIVE CAREFULLY AND REMEMBER THAT YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO SEE SMALL CHILDREN WALKING NEAR YOUR CAR WHEN YOU ARE AT THE WHEEL. Our little kiss 'n' ride / bus bay at the front of the school along Arthur Allen Drive is simply too small for a school of 500 students. My advice is that you do not use the kiss 'n' ride at all. Instead, you should park your car and collect your children. If you do use the kiss 'n' ride please use these common-sense rules: 1. Do not park in the kiss 'n' ride and leave your car (you can be fined for this) 2. Make sure that you move forward as the spaces become available so that people behind can drive in behind you

to use the kiss 'n' ride 3. Do not park or stop in the bus bay (you can be fined for this) 4. To prevent accidents make sure you give the busses right of way 5. If there is no room DO NOT STOP - you will block the road and cause an accident 6. You should arrange the pick-up with your child and instruct him/her to stand back from the road and not to get

into your car until it has completely stopped 7. Apply flexibility to these common-sense rules when people/students with physical disabilities are using the kiss 'n'

ride.

Library News Each week the students come to the library and enjoy reading, PRC activities and for the younger students craft. The library is a fun and enjoyable place which helps our students link reading with positive emotions. You can do the same at home… When reading library books at home enjoy just reading them rather than using them to teach reading. Try to make reading a daily event, usually this is at bedtime. If you’re struggling to get your child to enjoy reading please come and speak with me and together we can get them hooked on reading. Guided Inquiry Guided Inquiry is the process of teaching children to ask questions and learn how to use information. In the early years this involves small group activities and structured activities to build their background knowledge. At Bardia Public School this program is run in a team teaching setting through the library. This term we have been studying “Living Things” and the students have been exploring how living things are grouped, what makes something living and the things that living things need. Last week we made sprout houses and the children are excitedly waiting for their seeds to sprout. Growing plants is a wonderful way to teach children delaying gratification - that is the ability to wait. When they plant something, especially a seed, they can’t see the results of their labour, they must wait trusting that it will work out. This is just one of the benefits of gardening with children. I’m sure you can think of many more… Volunteering in the Library Are you considering returning to work? Volunteering in the library or at the school is a wonderful way to gain experience and confidence when considering returning to the workforce after being at home with small children. In the library alone over the past 14 years 12 parents have successfully returned to employment in various settings from the experience they gained while volunteering. If you feel this may be right for you, come and have a chat with me. The times to help are completely up to you. Don’t forget to bring your hat and jacket purchases to the office for embroidery with your child’s unique initials. We retain a register of all records so we can return any lost items to the students.

CRAFT SESSIONS We are running craft sessions during the lunch period. If you have any craft items you could donate (e.g. wool, knitting needles, ribbon etc.) please hand in to the office.

All donations welcome. We would like to give a huge thankyou to everyone who has already donated.

Mrs. White – SLSO

For every deposit made at school, no matter how big or small, students will receive a cool Dollarmites token. Once students have individually collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for a school banking reward item in recognition of their continued savings behaviour. Remember our school earns 5% commission on every deposit made (to a maximum of $10 per individual deposit). Thank you for supporting the School Banking program at Bardia Public School.

School Banking

Wednesday is school banking day and students should bring in their weekly deposit to the front office before 9:00 a.m.

Due to space, we no longer have the uniform shop service on school premises. For your convenience attached to this newsletter is an order form.

Jade and I time to prepare.

Here are the pricelists:

2 x Chicken, Cheese and Salad Tacos $6.50 2 x Vegetarian Chickpea and Salad Tacos $5.50
