  • Golf in BarbadosFor such a small Caribbean island, Barbados is truly blessed with anincredible richness of golf courses. On the south coast can be found theBarbados Golf Club, an enjoyable 18-hole championship course, and ClubRockley, a well-maintained 9-hole resort course. Both are open to thepublic. On the west coast, the quality of the courses and their very closeproximity to each other represent a veritable Golfers Paradise. Endorsedby the successful staging of a world-class golf tournament, and offeringfour PGA standard courses, Barbados can now be considered a genuinegolf destination. Sandy Lane is home to two Tom Fazio designed courses, the Country Club and the Green Monkey; Royal Westmoreland is a veryimpressive Robert Trent-Jones Jr. creation; and there is a stunning 18-holecourse now open at the Apes Hill Club, a spectacular residentialdevelopment. Janice Sylvia BrockThe vibrant hues, sense of movement, & the sometimes offbeattreatment of subjects, imbue her paintings with joie de vivre.A master of colour and form, Janice Sylvia Brock has gained internationalacclaim. Her work has been likened to that of Matisse and Chagall, thoughthe vibrant hues and the sense of movement are uniquely Brock. From thefirst touch of colour laid onto the virgin canvas her brush strokes are utterlyconfident, and this is evident in the result: works which resonate with life, sensuality, and occasionally humour. Her paintings are keenly sought afteron both sides of the Atlantic. In the USA, the White House has two of herpieces, while in the UK she was recently invited to exhibit in the prestigiousSaatchi Gallery. At Brocklands, her studio gallery overlooking the ocean in St. James, much of her recent work is on display, as well as prints of selectedpaintings, in over 500 square feet of exhibition space. You can also seework in progress and chat with Janice about her art.Her autobiography, My Life On Canvas, can beordered directly from the artist by email (or inthe UK call 01625 585744 or 07940 744684).

Barbados Sea TurtlesFour species of sea turtles visit our watershawksbill, green, leatherbackand occasionally loggerhead. The herbivorous green turtles, many hatchedin Ascension Island, Costa Rica and Mexico, come here in large numbersand settle for several years foraging among the sea grasses. Criticallyendangered leatherbacks and hawksbills nest on our shores. All of these ancient marine reptiles have survived virtually unchanged for150 million years of evolution in the ocean. Strong and graceful in thewater, they are lumbering hulks on land, making them vulnerable topredators. So why go there? To lay eggs. Of the hundreds of eggs thateach turtle deposits in the sand, only one or two turtles will survive tobreeding age about 25 years later. The eggs, hatchlings and mature turtlesare eaten by crabs, birds, fish, dogs, mongoose, and . people, although itis illegal to catch sea turtles or to possess any turtle product in Barbados. Barbados has had stellar success in their revitalization of the turtlepopulation due to the work of the Barbados Sea Turtle Project at theUniversity of the West Indies (UWI). Since monitoring and conservationactivities began in 1980, numbers of nesting hawksbills, easily recognizableby their hawk-like face, have risen from just 30 to over 500 per year.

  • Indeed, Barbados has become a regionally significant nesting ground forhawksbills and has been featured in documentaries by Discovery, BBC andAnimal Planet. Mature female turtles return to the beaches that theythemselves hatched on and mate with several males before beginning to layeggs. Females will nest every few weeks, up to 5 times, over the course of thenesting season. Upon hatching, the tiny turtles swim away from Barbados andfloat in currents, as they are taken on a journey of thousands of miles aroundthe Atlantic Ocean. Those that survive the trip will eventually settle back in theCaribbean region to feed and grow; and from there make their migrationsto and from Barbados beaches. Interestingly, some of the younghawksbills that can be seen feeding on our reefs originated from as faraway as West Africa, and will return there to nest! Turtles eat a variety of foods, including sea grass, algae and sponges. Some species eat jellyfish, which is why plastic bags must be kept out ofthe sea. Turtles can eat them by mistake. The success story of Barbadosturtles will hopefully be an on-going one, thanks mainly to the efforts ofdedicated students and volunteers. The Barbados Sea Turtle Projectoperates a 24 hour Sea Turtle Hotline (230 0142) to monitor sea turtlesightings and address sea turtle emergencies. The Project constantlystruggles to maintain its financial sustainability (a challenge in this time of cutbacks). Historic Bridgetown isthe heart of the nation, with its splendid churches, ancient JewishSynagogue, old balconied shop houses, bridges, sugar warehouses and theNeo-Gothic Parliament Buildings, beside the Careenage. The clever use ofinteractive audio and video along with the exceptional high quality exhibitsmake a visit to the Museum of Parliament & the National Heroes Gallerya real pleasure. The Nidhe Israel Synagogue and Museum, founded in1654, is the earliest constructed synagogue still in use in the Americas. Nowadays, it is a busy area of posh hotels, exquisiterestaurants, trendy bars and irresistible shops. Shopping in this area hasrecently been taken up several notches with the opening of themagnificent Limegrove Lifestyle Centre, a vibrant community for shops, entertainment and enjoyment, with many of the worlds leading retailbrands opening flagship stores there alongside trendy cafs, gourmet foodstores and state of the art movie theatres. Just north of Holetown is St. James Parish Church, which stands on one ofthe oldest parcels of consecrated land on the island and is often referredto as "God's acre". Many of the original settlers and a number of prominentBarbadians were laid to rest in the church and adjoining graveyard. Continuing north into St. Peter, make a stop at The Shell Gallery, just offHighway 1 in the Gibbes area. They have an abundance of shells fromaround the world and many other shell related gift items for the shellenthusiast. Nearby, Gibbes Beach and Mullins are perfect for a swim and abite to eat at the brightly painted, very laid back, Bombas Beach Bar.
