Maureen Tracey first came to live inBarbados as a young bride in the70s. Her roots became ingrainedinto the culture and beauty of theisland as she moved between hereand Canada. While travelling theworld as a marketing executive inthe textile industry, her exposure tocolour and design complementedher artistic skills in the fashionindustry, photography and ceramicwork. Today shes focused on beinga full-time artist. Her fun-lovingand whimsical oil paintingsshowcase aspects of Barbadian lifethat are slowly disappearing. Many of her paintings show herBajan Lovesheep, the iconicblackbelly sheep, wearing littleheart necklaces expressing the loveMaureen feels for Barbados.She markets her own paintingswhich can be seen in the Gallerysection of her [email protected] or [email protected]

Barbados Sea TurtlesFour species of sea turtles visit our watershawksbill, green, leatherbackand occasionally loggerhead. The herbivorous green turtles, many hatchedin Ascension Island, Costa Rica and Mexico, come here in large numbersand settle for several years foraging among the sea grasses. Criticallyendangered leatherbacks and hawksbills nest on our shores. All of these ancient marine reptiles have survived virtually unchanged for150 million years of evolution in the ocean. Strong and graceful in thewater, they are lumbering hulks on land, making them vulnerable topredators. So why go there? To lay eggs. Of the hundreds of eggs thateach turtle deposits in the sand, only one or two turtles will survive tobreeding age about 25 years later. The eggs, hatchlings and mature turtlesare eaten by crabs, birds, fish, dogs, mongoose, and . people, although itis illegal to catch sea turtles or to possess any turtle product in Barbados. Barbados has had stellar success in their revitalization of the turtlepopulation due to the work of the Barbados Sea Turtle Project at theUniversity of the West Indies (UWI). Indeed, Barbados has become a regionally significant nesting ground forhawksbills and has been featured in documentaries by Discovery, BBC andAnimal Planet. Mature female turtles return to the beaches that theythemselves hatched on and mate with several males before beginning to layeggs. Females will nest every few weeks, up to 5 times, over the course of thenesting season. Upon hatching, the tiny turtles swim away from Barbados andfloat in currents, as they are taken on a journey of thousands of miles aroundthe Atlantic Ocean. Those that survive the trip will eventually settle back in theCaribbean region to feed and grow; and from there make their migrationsto and from Barbados beaches. Interestingly, some of the younghawksbills that can be seen feeding on our reefs originated from as faraway as West Africa, and will return there to nest! Turtles eat a variety of foods, including sea grass, algae and sponges.Some species eat jellyfish, which is why plastic bags must be kept out ofthe sea. Turtles can eat them by mistake. The success story of Barbadosturtles will hopefully be an on-going one, thanks mainly to the efforts ofdedicated students and volunteers. The Barbados Sea Turtle Projectoperates a 24 hour Sea Turtle Hotline (230 0142) to monitor sea turtlesightings and address sea turtle emergencies. The Project constantlystruggles to maintain its financial sustainability (a challenge in this time of cutbacks). Naturally some fish are easier to see orfind than others, but a helpful hint would beto look around obstacles such as rocks,logs, cement blocks and old reef structures.Fish use these odd fixtures as a hiding placeor home and often congregate there. Exploring the West & North of BarbadosThe west coast is home to Holetown, in the parish of St. James, the sitewhere John Powell landed in 1625 to claim Barbados in the name ofEnglands King James. Nowadays, it is a busy area of posh hotels, exquisiterestaurants, trendy bars and irresistible shops. Shopping in this area hasrecently been taken up several notches with the opening of themagnificent Limegrove Lifestyle Centre, a vibrant community for shops,entertainment and enjoyment, with many of the worlds leading retailbrands opening flagship stores there alongside trendy cafs, gourmet foodstores and state of the art movie theatres. Just north of Holetown is St. James Parish Church, which stands on one ofthe oldest parcels of consecrated land on the island and is often referredto as "God's acre". Many of the original settlers and a number of prominentBarbadians were laid to rest in the church and adjoining graveyard. Continuing north into St. Peter, make a stop at The Shell Gallery, just offHighway 1 in the Gibbes area. They have an abundance of shells fromaround the world and many other shell related gift items for the shellenthusiast. Nearby, Gibbes Beach and Mullins are perfect for a swim and abite to eat at the brightly painted, very laid back, Bombas Beach Bar.

A few miles further north isSpeightstown, once a fort andthriving port, today it is a fishingport and commercial centre thoughmuch of the 19th centuryarchitecture and charm stillremains.
