Located inBarbados at almost 1,000 feet above sea level, with lush pasture-land, coral stone quarries, wooded ravines and sparkling lakes, thecourse is as much in accord with its varied surroundings as it is anexciting challenge for golfers. As proclaimed by Golf Monthly,"how ever much you enjoy the front nine - and you will - this is anentre into the main course. There is so much to savour over theback nine that I have no hesitation in claiming it to be simplysensational. And contained within this sensation is a three-holestretch that may be the best of its kind built anywhere in the worldover the last decade." • Janice Sylvia BrockA master of colour and form, Janice Sylvia Brock has gainedinternational acclaim. Her work has been likened to that ofMatisse and Chagall, though the vibrant hues and the sense ofmovement are uniquely Brock. From the first touch of colour laidonto the virgin canvas her brush strokes are utterly confident, andthis is evident in the result: works which resonate with life, sensuality, and occasionally humour. Her paintings are keenlysought after on both sides of the Atlantic. In the USA the WhiteHouse has two of her pieces, while in theUK she was recently invited to exhibit inthe prestigious Saatchi Gallery. At Brocklands, her studio galleryoverlooking the ocean in St. James, muchof her recent work is on display, as well asprints of selected paintings, in over 500square feet of exhibition space. Hop on the BusNeed an easy and inexpensive way to get around the island? Well,Barbados has a very good public transport system coveringvirtually the entire island. The large, brightly painted blue buseswith yellow stripes along the sides are government-run by theBarbados Transport Board. A standard bus fare of BB$2 takes youto and from anywhere on a single bus be sure to have the exactlocal change when boarding. Bus stops are marked into city orout of city and you need to hail the bus as it approaches, asthey do not automatically stop at every bus stop. There are three main terminals two in Bridgetown (FairchildStreet and Princess Alice Highway), and one in Speightstown, St.Peter. A central staging depot is located at Mangrove in St. Philipand a sub-terminal at Oistins in Christ Church. There are also two other public transport options you mayconsider. The privately owned yellow mini-buses and the whitevans with maroon stripes along the sides, known locally as ZRs(pronounced Zed-Arrs) because they carry a ZR on the licenseplate. These will volley for your patronage against the other buses.Often crowded, never dull and sometimes blasting loud music, theZRs can show less caution on the road and sometimes go off-route and pack people in to make more money so be warned!
