  • 8History Barbados History

in a NutshellOriginally inhabited by Amerindiansbefore being settled by the English in1627, Barbados is the only Caribbeanisland that remained constantly underBritish rule until 1966 when we gainedindependence. It is no wonder theisland is affectionately known as LittleEngland. Over the course of the lastfour centuries, historical events and apotent mix of African, British and otherinfluences have bequeathed a richcultural heritage. During the 17th and18th centuries, Barbados wasestablished as the nucleus of theTrans-Atlantic trade and served asheadquarters for both the British Royal Navy and Army.Bridgetown is home to the third oldest Parliament in theCommonwealth; a statue of Lord Nelson which pre-dates itscounterpart in Londons Trafalgar Square by some 30 years; andthe 350-year-old Jewish Synagogue, the oldest to be foundanywhere in the entire western hemisphere. Interestingly,Barbados is the only place that George Washington ever visitedoutside the United States. St. Nicholas Abbey is the oldestJacobean house in the western hemisphere. Bearing testament tothe extraordinarily rich history of this small island are thirteenwonderful museums and two beautifully preserved plantationhouses: The Barbados Museum, Nidhe Israel Synagogue andMuseum, Arlington Museum, Cricket Legends of BarbadosMuseum, Barbados Concorde Experience, George WashingtonHouse and Museum, The Museum of Parliament and NationalHeroes Gallery, The Folk Museum at Foursquare Rum Factory,Folkstone Underwater Park and Museum, Mallalieu MotorMuseum, Springvale Eco-Heritage Museum, St. Nicholas Abbeyand Sunbury House. Anyone motivated enough to delve intoBarbados fascinating past will be well rewarded.

SAFETYBarbados is considered to be asafe place but always be ascautious as you would be athome. Exercise common senseabout venturing into lonelylocations; secure your valuables;never leave your belongingsunattended on the beach or infull view in a locked car; alwaysleave your key at front desk aslost keys mean insecurity.Barbados has never had a sharkattack. The most commonsharks are Nurse Sharks, whichdo not attack. There are nopoisonous spiders or snakes buta centipede bite, though notpoisonous, can be very painful.

BE AWAREBarbados is close to the equatorand the sun can cause severedamage to the skin so be sure touse a good sun screen and situnder an umbrella. Check thatcoconut palms do not havebrown coconuts or droopingbrown branches that are apt tofall before sitting underneath. Ifyou are stuck by the sharpspines of the black sea urchinsfound on the reef, althoughpainful, they are harmless andwill eventually dissolve and beabsorbed by the body. Only pullthem out if they are clearlyprotruding.

    Shopping BrazilianGem Designs

Different by DesignBrazilian Gem Designs, nowcelebrating fifteen years atthe Colony Club Hotel onBarbados west coast, is thebrainchild of John Beale andhis Brazilian wife Leila, whois a member of the renownedGemological Institute ofAmerica (GIA). John and Leilas jewellery background began over 25 years ago inRio de Janeiro through a close relationship with the De CastroFamily, owners of the traditional Brazilian company Gregory &Sheehan. Gregory & Sheehan was formed over 75 years ago byformer managers of Cartier and Mappin & Webb. They wereselected by the Brazilian Government for presenting a gift of specialaquamarine jewellery to Queen Elizabeth at her coronation in 1952. John and Leila extended their Brazilian links in 1997 through anassociation with Hans Stern, known as the Lord of Gemstones andthe founder of Brazils most famous jewellery company, H. STERN.They were appointed the first agent in the world for H.STERN. Unlike many jewellery outlets, most of Brazilian Gem Designsoutput is 18 karat and handmade. They also assist clients withdesigns and make pieces especially for them. Leila Beale saysBrazilian Gem Designs is art, where the gems are selected andromanced, as opposed to impersonal mass production of repetitivejewellery made from castings. She believes that a piece ofjewellery should be something special and lasting. Leila says thather shop really caters to a niche market and to those people whowant a shopping experience in pleasant surroundings where theycan satisfy their dreams, emotions and romantic feelings. She ispleased to hear clients say that they first visited Brazilian Gems forits reputation, but the reason for them returning is due to value.Colony Club Hotel, St. JamesTel: 432 5676 or 422 2335 ext. 5031 e-mail: [email protected]

Mosaic ArtOur cover artist, Melanie Blomgren was born, and grew up, in Sweden where she went to artcollege, worked in the fashion industry for 5years and moved to Barbados in 1990.Here, she worked in the restaurant business for15 years during which time she developed afascination for the many colourful charactersshe encountered in the islands vibrant nightlifescene the expressions, painted faces, the outfits, the stories andthe humour. During the daylight hours, Barbados' equally uniqueand colourful wildlife made a deep impression too the monkeys, the birds and the improbable flying fish. After the birth of her daughter in 2002, she turned her hand tomosaics. Melanies pieces, like the ancient mosaics, often involveportraits of people and depictions of scenery. Where she departswith ancient tradition is in the way her mosaics often rise up in threedimensions, and in the wit infused in her work. This underlying senseof humour has always guided her pieces, as it has her life.

  • There is such a variety ofdiving experiences on offer inBarbados that any keenscuba diver or underwaterphotographer should leavethe island knowing that theirdives have not only beenworthwhile, but challenging, fascinating, rewarding and, most importantly, enjoyable. Not only are there flourishing, brightly coloured reefscovered in a variety of hardand soft corals, but there is asuperb selection of wrecks old and new, large and small. They are all complementedby a profusion of beautiful

Caribbean reef and pelagic fish. If a reef has a multitude of healthycorals it usually follows that the fish life is equally rich.

There are rare species of fishsuch as seahorse and frogfish, along with schools of commonreef fish like snappers, yellowgoatfish and creole wrasse.Barbados is also home to manylarge pelagic fish such asbarracuda, and various speciesof jacks, tarpon and mackerel.Sting rays, eagle rays and manyeels are common residents, readyto dazzle even the most worldlydivers, plus the occasionalsightings of manta rays. Barbados undoubtedly has thebest collection of wrecks in theCaribbean. Standing above allothers, quite literally, is the SSStavronikita, a 365 foot longfreighter which was purposelysunk in 1978. She was soskillfully sunk that she liesupright, intact on a sandy bedwith her keel resting at 130feet. This impressive wreckneeds 5 or 6 dives to see all ofit and is the most often re-divedsite in Barbados. The picturesque Carlisle Bay liesjust south of Bridgetown and isthe resting place of six wrecks ofvarying age and size. The wholearea has been made into amarine park and is one of thefew places where divers andsnorkelers can access thewrecks from the beach.
