Site NominationBarbados’ historic capital city,Bridgetown, which had its382nd anniversary in 2010,and the historic Garrison areahave been nominated forinscription on the WorldHeritage list. During the 17thand 18th centuries, Barbadoswas established as the nucleus of Trans-Atlantic trade and servedas headquarters of both the British Royal Navy and Army.Bridgetown is home to the third oldest Parliament in theCommonwealth; a statue of Lord Nelson which pre-dates itscounterpart in London’s Trafalgar Square by some 30 years; andthe 350-year-old Jewish Synagogue, the oldest to be foundanywhere in the entire western hemisphere. Interestingly,Barbados is the only place that George Washington ever visitedoutside the United States.Originally inhabited by Amerindians before being settled by theEnglish in 1627, Barbados is the only Caribbean island whichremained constantly under British rule until 1966 when she gainedindependence. It is no wonder the island is affectionately knownas “Little England”. Over the course of the last four centuries, historical events and a potent mix of African, British and otherinfluences have bequeathed a rich and diverse cultural heritage.Bearing testament to this are the thirteen wonderful museumsand two plantation houses that exist in this small island: TheBarbados Museum, Nidhe Israel Synagogue and Museum,Arlington Museum, Legends Cricket Museum, BarbadosConcorde Experience, George Washington House and Museum,Museum of Parliament and National Heroes Gallery, FolkMuseum at Foursquare Rum Factory and Heritage Park, FolkstoneUnderwater Museum, Mallalieu Motor Museum, Springvale Eco-Heritage Museum, St. Nicholas Abbey and Sunbury House.Any visitor motivated enough to delve into Barbados’ past will berichly rewarded.

BrazilianGem DesignsDifferent by DesignBrazilian Gem Designs, nowcelebrating fourteen years atthe Colony Club Hotel onBarbados’ west coast, is thebrainchild of John Beale andhis Brazilian wife Leila, whois a member of the renownedGemological Institute ofAmerica (GIA).John and Leila’s jewellery background began over 25 years ago inRio de Janeiro through a close relationship with the De CastroFamily, owners of the traditional Brazilian company Gregory &Sheehan. Gregory & Sheehan was formed over 75 years ago byformer managers of Cartier and Mappin & Webb. They wereselected by the Brazilian Government for presenting a gift of specialaquamarine jewellery to Queen Elizabeth at her coronation in 1952.John and Leila extended their Brazilian links in 1997 through anassociation with Hans Stern, known as the Lord of Gemstones andthe founder of Brazil’s most famous jewellery company, H. STERN.They were appointed the first agent in the world for H.STERN.Unlike many jewellery outlets, most of Brazilian Gem Designs’output is 18 karat and handmade. They also assist clients withdesigns and make pieces especially for them. Leila Beale says“Brazilian Gem Designs is art, where the gems are selected andromanced, as opposed to impersonal mass production of repetitivejewellery made from castings”. She believes that “a piece ofjewellery should be something special and lasting”. Leila says thather shop really caters to a niche market and to those people whowant a shopping experience in pleasant surroundings where theycan satisfy their dreams, emotions and romantic feelings. She ispleased to hear clients say that they first visited Brazilian Gems forits reputation, but the reason for them returning is due to value.Colony Club Hotel, St. JamesTel: 432 5676 or 422 2335 ext. 5031e-mail: [email protected]

Janice Sylvia BrockA master of colour and form, Janice Sylvia Brock has gainedinternational acclaim, and her paintings are keenly sought after bydiscerning collectors worldwide. Her work has been likened to thatof Matisse and Chagall, though the vibrant hues and the sense ofmovement are uniquely Brock. She will approach a new canvaswithout the aid of sketches, photographs or preliminary outlines. From the first touch of colour laid onto the virgin canvas her brushstrokes are utterly confident, and this isevident in the result: works which resonatewith life, sensuality, and occasionally humour. At ‘Brocklands’, her studio gallery overlookingthe ocean in St. James, much of her recentwork is on display, as well as prints of selectedpaintings, in over 500 square feet ofexhibition space. You can also see work inprogress and chat with Janice about her art.Viewing by appointment. Please call Brocklands Gallery:432 6061 or 237 [email protected]

Hiring a car is the best way toappreciate the beauty andcharacter of Barbados. Whenhiring a car, pay attention tothe demonstration of thevehicle as most models aredifferent in the Caribbean.Note the emergency hotlinenumber of your rentalcompany and check thatthey offer breakdownassistance. Most rental

companies offer unlimited mileage, free delivery and pick-up tohotels, villas, airport and seaport, baby seats and free road maps. All vehicles are covered by insurance including unlimited liability forpassengers and third party personal injury coverage. The CollisionDamage Waiver is comprehensive insurance and is highlyrecommended, but does not usually cover damage to rims and tyres.Although credit card insurance covers you for most motor vehicles,it is recommended that you check which vehicles are exempt. If you have an accident, you must leave your vehicle in its positionand call your car hire company and the police immediately – do notadmit liability. For Police dial 211 and ambulance 511.In Barbados we drive on the left. Drivers must have a local driver’spermit which can be obtained from most car rental offices, or fromany local Police Station for BDS$10 - it is valid for two months fromthe date of issue. Seat belts are compulsory.Visitors are easily identifiable on the road by the ‘H’ number plateand locals are usually accommodating of your confusion and makeallowances. However, since the ‘H’ does identify you as a visitor youcan be a target for pickpockets and harassing vagrants. Authorizedsecurity personnel at all attractions and places of interest are usuallyin uniform, so do not pay anyone else who claims to be “security” toguard your vehicle. Please be careful with your possessions andplace them in the boot/trunk wherever possible and ensure that thevehicle is always locked when unattended.

Villa LifeEnjoying leisure time relaxing ina beautiful villa in Barbados, beit as an owner or a visitingguest, is definitely one of life'sfiner luxuries.Villa life offers both the relaxedprivacy of a home and theattentive service of wonderfulstaff. Residents have the libertyto do what they want whenthey want, without any need toconsider the sensibilities ofstrangers around them and yetstill be able to enjoy the benefitof dedicated helpers whose aimis to make sure their guestsrelax and enjoy themselves. The vast majority of rentalproperties in Barbados are

looked after by highlyaccomplished managementcompanies or real estateagencies, professionals whobenefit from many yearsexperience of taking good careof both the houses and theguests who stay in them.As such, the villas are generallywell maintained and kept inimmaculate condition bycarefully trained staff, whichusually comprises a butler, cook, housemaids, gardenerand security watchman. Thismeans that owners and visitorsalike can just leave all theirworries behind, totally unwindand forget about any sense ofresponsibility they may haveleft back home.To further enhance the appealof ‘villa life’, in recent years theoverall quality of the trainedstaff in the houses and villashas improved considerably, especially in the kitchens.Nowadays there is not only agood supply of Bajan cookswho can expertly produce avariety of delicious local dishes, there now also exists a cadre ofvery gifted, fully trained chefswho are well capable ofproducing top class cuisine ofan international standard.

Buying Property in BarbadosProperty must pass conveyance of title, evidenced by therecording of the deeds and certified survey plans at the registry oftitle. A purchaser will require a registered Barbadian attorney tosearch the register and establish title to the property prior to thecompletion of sale. The parties sign a binding contract and thevendor’s attorney holds the deposit until completion, at whichtime the balance of the price is paid. Once an agreement hasbeen made and a 10% deposit of the agreed price has been paid, then the deal must proceed or the deposit is forfeited. The title may be taken in a person’s name or through a corporatevehicle set up to own the property. It is possible for non-residentsto purchase property through a company, that may beincorporated outside Barbados but which must be registered inBarbados. The sale of property by all persons, including citizens orpermanent residents, is subject to property transfer tax of 2.5%,plus approximately 1% stamp duty. However, the first $125,000 ofthe sale proceeds is exempt from property transfer tax providedthat there is a building on the property.Attorney’s fees for both the seller and the purchaser areapproximately 1.5% to 2% of the sale price. The real estateagent’s commission fees are normally 5% of the sale. Both feesare subject to 15% VAT.Any owner of land in Barbados is required to pay an annual landtax at the following rates:First Bds.$125,000 = 0%Next Bds.$225,000 = 0.10%Next Bds.$500,000 = 0.65%Excess over Bds.$850,000 = 0.75%Following enactment of new legislation, there is a Bds$60,000 capon land tax rates, provided that the house is used exclusively as aresidence by the person who owns the land upon which the houseis erected.

Golf in BarbadosFor such a small Caribbean island, Barbados is truly blessed withan incredible richness of golf courses. On the south coast can befound the Barbados Golf Club, an enjoyable 18-holechampionship course, and Club Rockley, a well-maintained 9-holeresort course. Both are open to the public. On the west coast, the quality of the courses and their very closeproximity to each other represent a veritable ‘Golfer’s Paradise’.Endorsed by the successful staging of a world-class golftournament, and offering four PGA standard courses, Barbadoscan now be considered a genuine golf destination. On the westcoast, Sandy Lane is home to two Tom Fazio designed courses, the Country Club and the Green Monkey; while RoyalWestmoreland is a very impressive Robert Trent-Jones Jr.,creation. The first eighteen holes are open at the stunning ApesHill Club where construction is well underway in this spectaculardevelopment.

Restaurant GuideIt is said that variety is the spice of life, and the culinary diversity ofBarbados dining makes for refreshing points of difference for visitorsto our shores. To make it easier for you to make your choice, wehave included Restaurant Classifications on pages 144 to 149 andto help you find the locations of the restaurants, there are areamaps for the west coast on page 150 and the south coast on page 166.Wherever you decide to dine be sure to try the island’s national dish, flying fish, along with the wide variety of possibly unfamiliar freshfish caught daily off the island’s shores. A delicious choice is MahiMahi or Dorado referred to locally as Dolphin. This moist, flaky fishis absolutely delicious and is not in any way related to the mammalporpoise, known as ‘Flipper’. Other delicious catches includeBarracuda, Red Snapper, Tuna and King Fish.Unless otherwise stated all prices are in Barbados dollars andinclude 15% VAT. A restaurant bill is usually not presented until itis requested.Although most restaurants welcome walk-in diners there are manythat are fully booked in advance, especially from December to May,so reservations are recommended.
