program and intensive therapy have better outcomes. The Bariatric and Metabolic
Institute is a Obesity Treatment Center that you should stay connected to for the
rest of your life.

Your nurse coordinator is available to you through the office main telephone line.
You can also ask a question by sending your surgeon a MyChart message.

It is important for you to know the contact numbers of how to reach someone during
and after business hours. Each surgeon team will provide you with these phone
numbers before your surgery.
It is not normal to be unable to keep fluids down for 24 hours. Prevent readmission
by talking to your surgeon team if you cannot drink the recommended amount of
fluids after surgery.
We also recommend you put your surgery guide book in a place you can remember
and refer to it when you have a question.

Please refer to your dietician pre-op plan to determine the appropriate type and
number of protein drinks per day.

Diabetic patients may be told to use a sugar free option instead of the standard
Gatorade. Those patients with gastroparesis or slow stomach emptying may be told to omit the day of surgery drink.

Some blood thinners need to be bridged- refer to prescribing provider to see how
they should be managed pre-op.

Eating past the “chest pressure” may cause pain. Eating/drinking slowly is essential
in preventing discomfort.

Walking in the halls is important to restore function of digestion and prevent blood
clots.
Please do not bring flip flops as your walking shoe.
Some patients find that an abdominal binder is helpful to reduce discomfort with
moving. You can ask your nurse for a binder when you are in the hospital.

Nausea is normal after bariatric surgery and will normally pass without treatment. It
is important to continue drinking as soon as the nausea passes to prevent
dehydration.
