DESCRIPTION
Bapu, when we remembered you !Gandhiji had said that the happiness of the poor and the dalits is only my truth and my God. For that cause I shall lay down my life, keep on trying life after life for such system of welfare of the dalits and the poor. When we attained independence, Sardar Patel said that his only wish was that henceforth no one in India would go to bed hungry. Even after 65 years of Independence none of Gandhiji’s and Sardar’s dreams have been fulfilled as of now. Since last 40 years, every member of only a single Gandhi family has made the life of the poor and dalits miserable by running the administration as per their own wish and whims by taking undue advantage of Gandhi-surnames. The author has written about the pitiable condition of the poor and the dalits from Surat city only as a case study. In fact it is the matter concerning the poor and the dalits of the entire country. The author is greatly pained at the situation where in the leading personalities of the country have been silently watching the extremely dirty movement, of making Rahul Gandhi the Prime Minster, going on since 2008 by spending crores of rupees after the campaign with the hard earned money of the people which have been collected in the form of taxes. Therefore the author has earnestly requested Gandhiji, “We have become absolutely weak and inept. Now you only re-appear and fill the strength in all of us.”

Before corruption becomes identity of our nation
March ! My Brethren ! March ! Let us March!A famous writer and Chartered Accountant, Shri
Dhirubhai Mehta, had written a long article in 'Janmabhoomi
- Pravasi', a Gujarati daily, on various scams, giving the
above title. He concluded with a poem, given below. He
rightly said about how the country would have been benefited,
if only 2 or 3 scams of all, could have been avoided. For
example, he gave full details of famous security scam during
the liberal economy policy of Manmohansing, when he was
finance Minister. If that scam could have been avoided,
atleast one college could have been founded in each of the
500 Districts of India. In the case of 2-G scam, one Medical
college could have been founded in every district. He doubted
with regret, how billions rupees of taxes paid by the people
could find their way into Swissbanks. Finally requested people
to March against corruption.
March Brethren March ! Let us March
March brothers, march!
Let the Public unity March!
Be a part of public protest and
Get freedom from the corruption!
Remember, the change
doesn’t come by itself
The grip of the devil of corruption
shall not be loosened by itself
Come; Fight, be a part of public
protest & get freedom!
The cool snow of Himalaya
is now converted to Volcano
Dhirubhai Mehta (Janmabhumi Pravasi : Dt. 6-12-2010)
by the scams of the corrupts!
The whole life has become a
chaos by these thieves
and corrupts!
Let us destroy this administration
supported
by the poisonous methods!
Be a part of public protest and
Get freedom from the corruption!
March brothers, march!
Let the Public unity March!
Just Wait !!

When in this country politicians talk about honestly, if
you feel like 'Satan quoting Bible,' then...
When sufferings of 68% of the total population i.e. 85

O my sensible friends ! Please, go through my book
along with other three, in context of changing party-based

Boom Boom Sharemarket in the name of progressThe progress of any developing country or even of any
individual can be achieved slowly but firmly, with the good-willemerging from intelleictual planning, hard work and patience, butsometimes an individual or a country can go astray on the wrongpath of sharemarketing and speculations and thereby seldomachieves the target. Mostly everybody or a nation has to toil hard-may be for generations together.
Many countries are destroyed because of this shortcut ofcovetousness. Some are still going astray, otherwise how such ahopeless, shortsighted and aimless budget of Dr. Manmohan Singh(Year 1992-93) can trigger 'Boom Boom Sharemarket' ?
The history of mankind was on the verge of turning on theroad of real progress through the efforts of two ambitious persons.namely Shri V. P. Sing of India and President Gorbachev of USSR.But alas !... Even Lord Krishna was ignored by his own peopleYadavs who got killed fighting with each other and Krishna himselfwas killed by an ordinary hunter. - Both V. P. sing and MikhailGorbachev faced tragic and insulting situations in the respectiveparliaments, like Draupadi in the court of Kauravas. So the historyof mankind turned into the opposite path of destruction instead ofprogress. As a result, hold of financial and political affairs, wentinto the hands of short sighted and low minded speculators andevery politician started dancing on the tunes of capitalists, who alsofound the situation to their liking and they started harvestingbenefits. In the name of World Bank, capitalists forced the power-greedy politicians to dance to their tunes. Thus the capitalists of thiscountry were also benefitted. They finally succeeded in the fall ofV.P. Sing by spending crores of rupees and the indian politiciansstarted taking pride in becoming their slaves.
This is the background of the success of stock-market.It is astounding how the boom was created after Dr. Manmohan
Sing's budget and how the speculators captured the whole stock-market. Now we all know that Dr. Manmohan Sing had boweddown to the World Bank under the pretence of 'Global or Liberaleconomy and almost every common man started speculating in theShare-market, under an illusion that some angels from abroad willcome to rescue us.
[I warned people against the bigbull Harshad Mehta that dangerousmad bull would rob the speculators and would destroy them. Aboveparagraphes are from my book 'New Economic Policy and future of thestock Market', written after the boom of stock-market due to the 'liberaleconomical policy' of Dr. Manmohan Sing.]

My Apology : Still I am not a human-being !
In this book, I have poured all my miseries and griefs.Since 66 years, I have laid down Gandhiji and his wiser son
Harilal in my heart and tried to communicate with both of them
about my anguishes and pangs. All the while, I told them thatI am not worthy enough to be a dust particle of their feet.
I have made compromises so many times and committed
right or wrong, big or small sins, now and then. Though, I havetried to sympathize with poors but at the same time, I have
usurped their rightful shares also ! Alas ! Only 'if' I could give
them their rightful shares ! 'If' I could regard them as my equal! But this 'if' troubles me !
So just now, I want to apologize to all my readers with my
earnest heart. I am running 86th year... What I care about myprestige or reputation ?
I do not want to leave behind the smallest part of my
grieving heart in writting this apology. With my real earnestheart, I appeal that please, pardon me, if I had given any false
or unworthy statement about anybody or for any kind of
distress or heart-pain or for being a cause of any kind ofprestige-loss. I do not regard any human-being of 7,000
millions of people my inferior. Gandhiji said that a 'Satyagrahi'
believes himself slighter than the smallest human-being.Though, I am not that humble, but I try to be so.
I regard every human-being young or old, man or woman,
even a child, a down-trodden, have-not, devoid, black orwhite, rich or poor my superior. Whatever written here is as a
symbol of the situations of today's world but as an individual,
I regard everybody my superior. If so called democracy perishes in its own fire, then the
existence of mankind will be in the jeopardy. Not only that, noother alternative governing system will be available for thepeople. If a villager like me can find such dangerous situationclearly, then why so many gentlemen of the world, intelligentand thoughtful people, sociologists, journalists, authers, poets, rationalists, Gandhians or devotees of Hindu, Muslim orChristianities can not surmise ? Why they are all keeping
mum? What is the reason that they hardly snuffle with closedlips and are not prepared to come out openly ? That is myanguish.
Whenever I wrote 15-20 books on politics, I could notrefrain from showing my anguishes and proclaimed themwithout any restrain over and over. I did that only because I feltthat I should write about them considering it as my duty. Istrongly feel that if we do not unite poors, downtroddens, havenots and devoids with us as quickly as possible in our mission, then it will be like injuring ourselves. The word 'mission' is notused for any individual or any group or any selfish interest. This mission is related to the well-being of whole universe.Wherever I mentioned about any person or any institution ora system, they are all symbolic and denote all includingmyself.
I compromised a lot. If Gandhiji were alive, he wouldhave scolded me. I know, I am not a true human-being yet.I am not even a 'Harijan' (A man of God). I have remained... and ... onlyÖ but I have felt the pangs of downtroddens,have-nots and poors.
I have faith in what Gandhiji said. He told us to condemncrime but not the criminal and regard him as human-being.Whatever I mentioned about any such person or about anyincident, I still regard him and respect him as a human-beinglike myself. I do not have any intention of offending anybodyor to belittle him. I am too small and have not become a realhuman-being. I have only tried to give words to my churningof 66 years to find a new governing system as Gandhiji and JayPrakashji wanted as a remedy of the miseries of the poor andthe downtroddens. Please, pardon me for my impudence.
- Nanubhai Naik
Ö My 'Harijan' friends ! We all have remained where we were.Hardly 2 or 3% of us were benefitted somewhat, but rest percentageof 'Harijans' has not reached to that stage. I have the same regret inmy heart as you have, so this is my outcry against those culprits who
have misused us all as 'Vote-banks' giving us false promises,
referring us as 'Harijans' ('Men of God')

About 40 years ago, I wrote a novel in Gujarati 'Oh, India!'depicting the political situation prevailing then. In that'Oh, India !' I kept blank the very first page with only onesentence. Still, after 40 years, I am not able to bear thatagonising blow while putting that same sentence on the
front page of this book.
Someday somebody will have to open his mouth.
The privileges and responsibilities of the MLAs
My Dear Members of the Legislative Assembly,
You will realise that it is a matter of great pride for you
to get elected and you are one of 81 members elected in the
L.A. 2.5 crores of people (then population was that much)
of Gujarat have faith in you all 81 members and have given
their sanction to rule over them. You will realise how high
that privilege is and how serious that responsibility is ! You
will have to (and that is your moral duty too) try earnestly
for the welfare of those 2.5 crore people. For that, we as a
part of the people have put forward suggestions in detail in
this lengthy letter, though we do not say that they are perfect.
There may be some miscalculations or impractical things or
may be some are over-imaginery but afterall, our only aim
is the welfare of the people. We have tried very solemnly to
put forward these suggestions that can be helpful for the
welfare of the people according to our thinking. Will you try
to do earnestly you think best for the people ?
The term 'treachery' does not mean just helping an enemy.
After all, what is a 'Nation' ? Is it not the people living in
the country ? So you can understand very well that giving
promises to the people at the time of elections and then not
fulfilling them after getting elected is also a kind of treachery.
[This is a part of a letter I wrote to 81 MLAs of Gujarat,
in 1977, when the Government was headed by Shri Babubhai
Patel. It was published afterwards under the name of 'What is a
Good Government?' 34 years ago. (Second Edition : 2010) Then
the population of Gujarat was 2.5 crores and number of MLAs
was 81.]

Prologue
As such, this prologue has nothing to do with Gandhiji.
Some matters are connected with this book, no doubt, so it
is necessary for me to refer my learned and sensitive friend,
Dr. Mohammad Mankad, who is a wellknown writer, columist
and thinker of Gujarat.
As it is, all my friends know about ups and downs of
my life and I hardly could conceal anything from them. One
of such matters is the story of my autobiography.
I spent many decades in wanderings and roamings
without any aim like my another writer friend late Shri
Chandrakant Baxi. As I decided to write and to become a
great writer during the early years of my third decade, I
thought to have some first-hand experiences about male and
female persons of different fields of the society, so during
my 4-5 years stay at Bombay I used to seek and go after
experienced persons.
I could eventually gatherd so many miseries of some
good and some irreputable persons. I am a sensitive man by
nature and my mother taught me to have compassion from
the early childhood, so I could easily enter into the hearts
of such personalities. So many poors, heroes and villains,
children and women, reputable and unreputable, loved me,
took me into their confidences, helped me and even searched
angrily about my intergrity of asking them so deeply. I do
not know why, the pangs of those people have given me deep
heartburns and griefs - may be due to those churnings of
Visram or the ringing bell of Bhuriyar Bawa, but my heart
is still burning and acheing.
I have no such vulnerability or even any knowledge to
go astray, then. I was an artless villager, could love all.
Luckily I could gather vast experience and those experience
deepened my compassion, not only that, they were responsible
for my development till today. My friend and an ex-president
of 'Gujarati Sahitya Parishad,' Shri Bhagwatikumar Sharma
says that I have no enemy. (I am an 'Ajaatshatru'.) That is
true and I think that there is a big role of those experience
in my reaching to that stage.
Late Chandrakant Baxi, whose close friendship I enjoyed
for at least 40 years, insisted that I should write my
autobiography, whenever we met and often asked when I was
going to write it. Likewise my other friends-all top rank
writers of Gujarat. Shree Bhagawatikumar, Shree Vinod Bhatt,
late Shree Bakul Tripathi, Shree Nagindas Sanghavi always
insisted for the same. Some years ago, we arranged an
inauguration of six books of the six wellknown writers of
Gujarat in Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi and English by Shree
Narendrabhai Modi, The CM of Gujarat. Some other
respectable guests like Shree Bhagwatikumar, Shree
Chandrakant Baxi, Shree Jayant Pathak and the Mayor of
Surat City were present on the dias with the CM. At that time
also Shree Bhagwatikumar openly appealed that I should
write my autobiography. I was hesitant then, lest it may affect
adversely in the matrimonial matters of my grand-children,
if the book were written and published then. Now when my
all social responsibilities are over, Shree Bhagwatikumar
again reminded me about writing my autobiography.
My friend Dr. Mankad always insists about it since
years. He would ask first about it, in the phone-calls every
month. Rekhabahen once replied that Nanubhai is busy writing
seven books on politics. Though he always reminded me, but
I have always replied that I may think about writing
my memories, not full autobiography after finishing writing
these seven books.
In reply to that Dr. Mohammad Mankad told me about
a truth that whenever a writer writes anything, especially an
autobiography, social, political and other thinkings and
experiences are always reflected in his writting, so I must
write my autobiography.
I earnestly remember Dr. Mohammad Mankad, when
this book is being published. Whatever experiences depicted
here are true and they are also a part of my memoires. I have
always enjoyed his company at his residence, discussing and
debating about so many things including Gujarati literature.
His family and his sons always love me. I have taken
advantages of his knowledge in so many subjects. I eagerly
await for his autobiography, rather than my memoirs.

Grand-marriages of Ministers and Slogans of
'Remove Poverty'
I wrote about 15 books on politics and published three
collections of poems on down-troddens and have-nots. I
also wrote 4 novels on politics. Somedays ago, when I re-
read about five pages from my novel 'Oh, India !' published
in 1971, my eyes were filled with tears. How can I express
my agony ? And to whom ? Bapu ! I do not know.
Only remembering you...
The people were stunned to know the details of grand
marriage-functions of ministers and industrialists spending crores
of Rupees. One news-channel paused a question after reporting,
'Who will understand the agonies of starving people ?' I wrote a
novel 'Oh, India !' on the same subject 42 years ago, in which I
depicted the tragic story of starving people of Bihar after giving
details of grand expensive marriage-functions of many politicians.
I also debated about Gandhian thought, Socialism, Communism,
Nazism and Maoism. My heart grieves after finding the same
expensive grandour in marriages and looting of starving people
by the politicians even after 42 years. I put here about 5 pages
from that book.
Nanubhai Naik
The politics of 'Toppling down Governments' in every
state started as the elections were over. Power-greedy
politicians suddenly felt love for 'Ruling Congress' and the
slogans 'Indira ! Indira !' were heard everywhere. Morarjibhai
kept mum. Nobody knew whether Patildada was in Delhi or
in Mumbai. Hitubhai started telling that he suddenly came
to know about dire poverty in India. Any way, there was a
realisation in every quarter, that poverty should be removed
but how that can be achieved, nobody from Indira to Hitubhai
had any idea. A common man still looked in the direction
of Delhi in the hope that the poverty was sure to be removed.
He started a habit of reading newspapers. The Government
was playing a game of 'hide and seek' like disappearing
clouds who threatened to rain. Elected leaders were lecturing
vigourously and hard words were thrown in the air that could
make poverty run-away.ÖThe leaders went into AC rooms as they delievered hot
words. The marriage-season of sons and daughters of
ministers, secretories and MLAs had started. There is a grand
custom of celebrating marriages in India and Ministers were
eager to maintain that custom.
Vijay sitting in his ten by ten room was going through
old newspapers where reports of the last elections were
given.
In Andhra Pradesh, one minister was celebrating
marriage of his daughter. He was taking utmost effort to
wash away the impression of communists that they are poor.
Reports of the communist-style marriage were flooded in the
papers daily. One film studio of Madras (now Chennai) had
organised a huge magnanimous tent wherein a marriage-
mandapam was decorated lavishly. The huge Samiyana costed
60,000 Rs. As such, communists never believe in God, but
some arrangments were done to shower tons of flowers on
the God of Tirupati only to get his blessings. There were
signals of 'No Entry' all over the campus of 'Tirupati Temple'
for other pilgrims that were not invited. Tons of sweets, rice,
ghee, other eatables, fruits-vegetables were poured out at
Tirupati. Yes ! A daughter of a communist was getting married
and there must be grand preparations !
Even in Rajasthan, Socialist ministers also have sons
and daughters ! Are they barren ? And if poor communist
ministers could do this much, then should Rajasthani ministers
lag behind ? They have afterall higher status in the society!
Jaipur cannot lag behind Madras ! The son of the chief
Minister was to marry and his bride was the daughter of a
multimillionaire ! And why ministers would like to be known
as poorer richman when businessmen claimed themselves
Ö The slogans of 'Remove Poverty' are still heard vigourously
from Soniaji, Rahulji and Manmohansihaji even after 42 years.
1817B.T.Y.R. 2
millionaires ? There was a huge procession of the bridegroom
with fulfledged police securities ! Along with it were 103
fourwheelers ! Big celebrities have huge contacts !
Home Minister also had a daughter ! She was also going
to marry. The celebrations of her marriage was so grand that
even police-officers had to rehearse for full three days well
before the function ! People were stunned to witness! Jaipur
did not witnessed such celebration, even when Rajmata
Gayatridevi married and came here as a bride !
Well, this was marriage-season ! Health Minister was
also celebrating marriage of his daughter ! People witnessed
whole celebration with gapping mouth ! There was never
such grand celebration in the history of Alwer ! This Minister
of State started his career as a secretery in an office where
he was getting 70 Rs. salary ! He was minister since few
years only, but how much he earned ? If God wants to give
you, he will shower on you even breaking your roof ! Even
the bride got lacs of rupees as 'Kanyadaan' (gifts to the
brides)!
The son of Irrigation Minister also got married. Jaipur
also got 'Kudos' for it. In his huge procession to Ahmedabad
as many as 20 Impalas were there. The gifts and presents for
the newly-weds had to be brought to Jaipur in eight trucks!
A daughter of Minister of Industries was going to
marry. He had just purchased a land of 20 Beeghas and
constructed a lavish bungalow ! Marriage plan is grand ! It
is said that his daughter got 'Kanyadaan' of lac rupees only
and gifts were so plentiful that the whole bungalow looked
smaller ! (When gold was sold at Rs.200/- per Tola !)
Vijay can see, a simpleton common man citing with
hopeful eyes a dream fulfilled, as if poverty has been removed
and does not even know, how to thank. He is so effervescent
with joy that at last the poverty had removed.
Even in Maharashtra also, there is a season of marriage. What of ministers ? Even communists and socialists can be
considered poor... but MLAs ? Do not consider them weak!Even Indra, the chief of Gods used to serve in the court ofRavan ! CM Chauhan (namely Yashwantrao - not Ashok) hasto go to MLA residence ! Sholapur district of Maharastrastate shined in that respect. A MLA namely ShankarraoMohite, who proclaimed of removing poverty, arranged adual-marriage function of his son and a daughter. He hadserved in many co-operative sugar factories for years. andwas president and adviser of many more co-operativeorganisations. He has almost served people and proclaimedslogans of 'Remove Poverty'. Now his children are marrying.Even God rushed to save Narsinha Mehta's prestige. Wouldhe not come to Mohite's rescue ?
The preparation of marriage-festival are going on since
six months ! Elections are coming on one side and this
marriage function on the other... Mohite has to fight on the
dual-front as Arjun in the Kurushetra. Rehearsals are going
on since one month. A special committee has been formed
and sub-committees to help. Every committee publishes
cyclostyled books of its activities and duties. Every guest
should get proper guidence ! Whole village has turned into
a big Indrapuri (A town of chief of Gods). Information centers
and telephone-booths are everywhere. Huge ice-planks were
kept floating in the wells to get the drinking watercool. More
than 100 thousand people have gathered there. Two thousand
kilos of potatoes and one thousand kilo of Brinjals are to be
used in cooking !
The arrangment of serving food is also quite unique !
Prepared foods come in the sliding trolleys and large teams
of waiters are doing their duties standing. A special
arrangement to meet orders of the guests on phones was
there.
There was a special arrangement for .V.V.I.P.s includingshree Yashwantrao Chauhan for their dining. Five differentsweets and mutton of four kinds were served with thebackground light music. There were fruit-stalls everywhere,so that guests can relish them freely. Some businessmen

themselves eracted designed arches for Mohite. Evenlabourers of Mohite's factories erected 51 arches to showtheir pleasure. Whole village is shining with 5,000 tubelightsand 1.5 lac bulbs. Village Aklunj is seen bathing in theglittering waves.
Guests from Sholapur are coming to Aklunj in their
vehicles but for the guests who have no cars, there is an
arrangement of 700 vehicles in Sholapur. What to talk about
the function ?
Both marriage-couples got huge sets of utensils and
furnitures along with an Ambassador, a Fiat, A Jeep, two
fridges and many Godrej cupboards in form of blessings and
good wishes ! And what about gold-jewelleries ! Only golden
rings weighing more than a 'tola' were received and reporters
say that were not less than 10 Kilos !
Yeshwantrao arrived after taking much trouble. He
inaugurated statues of Shivaji Maharaj and Dr. Ambedkar
which were waiting to be inaugurated since 2 years !
Mohite claimed that he had no part in the celebrations.
He is a poor-man and a public servant ! This whole thing
was managed by the people out of love. He was only
instrumental.
It is true ! God does not take any responsibility or
honour ! Only devotees accomplish the whole show on his
behalf.
Victory to Shivaji Maharaj ! Victory to Aklunj ! 'Victory
to Indiraji', 'Victory to 'Remove poverty' - 'Jay ho !' 'Jay ho!'

Newspapersalso say that old aged ministers have retired and a new youthfulbunch of ministers have come. They are staunch socialists(ofcourse, Nehru Brand only) and they are now busy inmodernising their offices. Once that basic job is finished, theyall will be going after poverty! And the povery will have to runaway within no time !
Newspapers say that Umashankar Dixit, who is near toIndiraji is a staunch socialist. He did not approve the roomK. K. Shah occupied before. A posh office is underconstruction at the expense of Rs. one lac. Let him occupythis new office, than poverty will not dare to enter there andif poverty disappears from his office, it will have to disappearaltogether.

And the President ? Well, he is the representative of thecountry. How he can be poor ? His residence is a symbol of theglory of the whole country as he is the first citizen !
Newspapers say that President is entitled for one lactwenty thousand rupees over and above the allowance offifteen lacs. The expenditure of maintaining RashtrapatiBhavan every year is 80 lacs. 42 years old History repeats
Pages of my 42 years old novel 'Oh, India !' are flooded
with the stories of lavish marriage-functions of the politicians.
Any one will lose faith in democracy who finds that the 42
years old history is repeating today. A villager like me goes
on rummaging old wastepapers as the hero of 'Oh, India !'
and eyes dribble on the yellowish papers seeing the sorry
plight of 65 years old democracy.
This is the story of Narayan Rane family.
The marriage of Neelesh Rane, an eldest son of multi-
millionaire Narayan Rane, was celebrated in the Turf club
in 2007. See the scenario ! The cost of his invitation card
was only 700 rupees each ! Its copy-right was obtained even!
Narayan Rane celebrated the function as a grand festival, as
if a crown-prince was wedding. The people were dumb-
founded and licked their fingers ! (Alas ! What remains for
a common man, but to lick his own fingers.)
If the eldest son's marriage was celebrated in such a
fashion, then naturally younger son can not marry in a simple
way. Rane's properties and the assets were definitely increased
three or four times during three years. These days, properties
increase in terms of billions; not in terms of millions !
See... When I rummage waste papers as that Vijay, the
hero of 'Oh, India !' then what I find ? Rane had stunned the
whole country !
Nearly 700 expert Chefs were invited only to decide the
menu from Delhi, Agra, Malvan, Amritsar, Hyderabad and?
Yes, from Italy ! Why Italy ? Don't ask such foolish questions!
Don't you know that Soniaji is from Italy ?
You will forget Moghul Emperor Akbar, if you only
could see VVIP dinner-tables, where 200 types of eatable
items were there. 150 Chefs from Malvan for vagetarians
were specially called, along with Chefs from Agra for 'Chat'
only and for 'Italian Pasta' specially from Italy !
2625
This grand celebration-festival continued for three days.
It was memorable as if chief of God-Indra celebrated his
son's marriage ! It remained a talk of the town for long.
Do you think Nitin Gadkari is poorer than Rane ? Has
he less money ? Rane must know that Gadkari did not remain
that old poor boy who used to stick leaflets and posters of
BJP on the city-walls, riding on the dilapidated scooter. Why
should he remain a 'poster boy' for ever ? If the Goddess of
fortune - Laxmidevi showers her blessings on Rane, then
why not on Gadkari ?
Nitinji would not lag behind. His son Nikhil married one
Rutuja and in his marriage celebration Nitinji could .check-
mate even Raneji. 54 top most leaders were invited to bless the
couple. How all those VVIPs would come ? In simple bullock-
carts, as Shashi Tharoor commented ? They all came flying in
their own chartered planes ! Who paid their travelling-
expenses, one does not know, but they all were served
delicious dishes costing 1,700 Rs. per one dish, by Nitinji. It
was a great hospitality ! And look at the reception and greeting
Shamiyana ! What about a villager like me, it could confound
even always chattering socalled richmen of 5 - 50 crores ! Only
Rane could celebrate his son's marriage? Why no other man
can celebrate better ? Dinner was arranged for one lac guests!
4,000 cooks were there and 2,000 police to watch the whole
proceedings, rather to keep 'Bandobast' !
Narayan-Nilesh-Nitesh Rane ! Nitin-Nikhil Gadkari !
What N-named 'Scorpion' persons are doing ? I struck my
head and try to lament angrily to God ! O God ! I am also
N-named-Nanio of Magan Mon ! You gave them plentiful
riches and kept me only a cattle-breeder ! What have I done?
Afterall, you also forsook me ! You also forsook another N-
named Narmad of Surat, no ? What have we all poets and
writers done to you that you throw us away ?
Well... being a poet myself, I remember a poem of
another Gujarati poet Karasandas Manek : 'On that Occasion,
I saw eyes of Almightly flooded with tears !' ('Te deen
aansoo-bheena re.... Hari-na lochaneya me deethha!')
Again I remember... only politicians are not
multimillionas ! In our Gujarat, some industrialists afford to
invite their guests in marriage celebrations, abroad in chartered
planes. In Rajsthan also, in marrigge-celebrations, flowers
are showered on the invitees from helicopters and are served
with grand lavish foods incurring huge expenses. How a
loaf-eater villager like me can remember all those holy names?
Why industrialists can not outbeat politicians like Narayan
Rane or Nitin Gadkari ?
This much, Bapu ! remembering you. Jay Jay Bapu !
Victory to you ! May you move in only a loin-cloth half
'Dhoti'; all your life, that was your-own choice and your
destiny ! But what about lacs and lacs of naked people, who
have almost nothing to wear ? Can those one crore people
get somewhat good-looking aprons even to hide their starving
skinny skeletons from the huge expenses incurred in only
one marriage-function?

Two pages from auther's novel 'Swapnalok'
('A world of dreams') published 45 years ago,
depicting a tragic story of Bihar-famineFour skeleton-women were gathered round a dried trunk
of a tree. They were trying to peel away the bark with axes.A child was fretting in the scorching heat but his motherdisregarding it, was busy in her effort.
Kshipra lifted the child. Its bones were pinching her.The child had no strength to cry or even to move. Its eyeswere shining. One could only surmise that the child is livingin its eyes. Kshipra could not bear its stare.
'Oh... why are you neglecting your child in such scorchingheat ?'
The women had not much strength left. They weretrying slowly to peel off the skin but their blows were notthat effective, still the bark was peeling off slowly.
One woman hardly could look at Kshipra.'It is going to die ! Hardly a day more...''But you can keep the child at home ! Why do you keep
it fretting in heat ?''We are about to go home... only a little more bark...''Bark... ? What will you do with it ?''Will boil it in water and drink ! May we pull on for
2-3 days !''Oh... !' Kshipra only could sigh, 'But why don't you go
to a nearby camp and have some food ?''How can we go there ? We have no strength even to walk!
Those who could, went away. Who will carry us there? We canhardly peel this skin... we'll use it for 2-3 days more and then...'Ö
Ö Panditji declared in 1948 that black-marketeers would be hung. After
20 years, Indiraji used slogans of 'Remove Poverty' in 1971. Thereafter,13 years Rajivji in 1984 also declared that poverty should be removedbecause poors only get 15 paise out of one rupee and the rest 85 paisego in the pockets of Government officials. And after 24 years more ,the back-seat-driver Rahulji of UPA Government who is busy in removingpoverty from the country, goes into a poor's hut only to eat his bread.Totally 60 years have passed ! Now tell me, Bapu ! Those starving poorpeople start to remember you or not ? No few drops are left in theirbodies which can flow as tears from their eyes !
Kshipra looked at her from head to toe. Isn't she feeling
grief ? She wondered, then realised that nothing is to be
added in her sorryplight. She had survived consuming her
own flesh and blood, even her bones have withered away and
not a drop of water remained to moist her eyes !
Kshipra stood paralised. Four half-naked and starved
women were standing before her. Their pallid skin stuck to
fleshless withered bones. Their faces were black and dried.
Only their eyes were glittering from the protruded bones as
some moisture shining into the deep well. They had torn
loin-clothes around their bellies and the rest of their bodies
were naked.
Kshipra could not stand there. Her heart was full of
agonies. She was about to cry, when Surya said, 'This happens
when there is poverty. It is not easy to feed oneself, whether
there is famine or not. It is not even easy to get some grains
from the Government godowns,Ö even if godowns of grain-
merchants are loaded with thousands of grain-cargoes. It
does not make any difference for those who are not able to
earn some money even in better times. Who, other than the
barks of these trees can help such unfortunates to survive ?
See, Kshipra ! How these trees of Bihar have become the
main source of lives ! It's no wonder a mother leaves her
child to die in the heat only to get some tree-skins, so that
she can survive for a day or two more. Tell me, how this can
happen ! These people have realised the truth deeply, no ?'
Surya was speaking with taunted irony. Kshipra could
feel that she was also in deep agony. She looked at Surya's
face. The face was stoney hard. Kshipra was taken aback.
'Don't get shocked, Kshiprabahen ! I'm not angry with
these poor people !'
Ö 'Purified food-grains are always needed for the wine-
factories and breweries of some Congress-men ! What is the
otherwise use of spoiled grains of Govt. godowns ? One of the
newspapers recently published a list of some ministers of central
Government who are from Maharastra, having wine-factories and
breweries. Nobody seems to be ashamed of this !
3029
'Then ? What is... ?'
'I'm angry with myself. I despise myself. We remain
very calm watching this. Our blood does not boil. I hate
myself more and more as I realise. My heart gets filled with
remorse and anger... How intently I wish to do... a lot...'
'What's stopping you ?'
'Oh ! Nothing... nothing we can do... We are so helpless
and insignificant. We are so overhelmed with our meanness
that I am not able to do anything except to dispise myself.
Oh ! There is no end to this !'

on politics, in 1966. Second Edition : 2003]
They died of starvation - Not due to MalariaBapu ! This novel 'Swapnalok' ('A world of dreams')
made me cry when I was writing, or seeing proofs even when
I finalised the proofs ! Why should I lie ? I cried all the while,
blaming you ! And this 65 years old democracy also makes
me cry. I can not bear. I go on rummaging old newspapers
and suddenly get hold of the wastepaper of 2010, and I cry!
My eyes are full of tears ! Bapu ! Just listen ! You won't be
refrain from crying !
There is a small village in the Khaprakhol area of
Bolangir district of Orissa. Some poor families were striving
to survive amidst dire poverty in a state, beyond any words,
worse than a manger. They were living in small huts of grass
and clay. A girl-child died on the 6th sept. 2009. Her parents
were perplexed how to arrange for her funeral, when the next
day her two years old brother died. Family had no time to
grieve. There was not even a morsel of food to eat in the
hut. How can a family arrange for the cramation of their
children ? Two days later, wife also died and within a month,
the husband also passed away. His name was Zintu Bariha.
Nobody in this world knew him. Who could have heard his
name ? And How could this poor family who only survived
churning leaves and skins of the trees, hear or know of
Congress, BJP or leftists ?
So this is the story of Daridra Narayans (poors) of
remote village of odisha. Poor families have a big queue of
children. God always gives blessings of half a dozen children
to them, but does not arrange to feed them. Zintu died at the
age of 43 years, when his parents were still alive. On Dec.
17th Zintu's mother Minji also died. Only Zintu's father
Champelal and two children of Zintu remained. Father
Champelal did not feel any pain on the deaths of his family-
members. He believed that they were now released from the
pangs of starvation. He had not a drop of tear to shed.
Ramprasad, son of Zintu, aged nine years is still living.
He must have done some good deeds in his previous birth.
One social institution put him in an orfnage 'Vishwa-Nilayam'
after knowing family's tragedy. Though he will not be able
to live there for long but for the time-being, he got a shelter.
The head of the village says to the reporters that the family
did not die of starvation but this area is malaria-stricken.
Mosquitoes are everywhere abundently. There is no dispensary
or hospital near by. Zintu's family was the victim of malaria.
Whatever it is, the truth is, these people are BPL (below
poverty line). Forget about one time meal, if an individual
gets one morsel in 24 hours, that is like getting heaven. They
are rotting in such a poverty.
Zintu was an illiterate daily labourer. The shameless
government gave him BPL certificate only after the deaths
of his two children. No one even cared for him till then. This
card was given by district office only with the fear that media
would disclose their mismanagement. Very ancient mountain
Gandhmaadan is situated in Bolangir district. Poor families
live in the slop of the mountain. The team of Manmohan
Sing's National Rural employment Guarantee scheme or even
Orissa's National Health Department or any other department
had neither visited this area, nor taken care of the people who
are living like insects. Rahul Gandhi goes for nighthalf in
the dalit area of UP, only because it is his polling area.
Who will go to Odisha ? Credit must go to deaths of
Zintu family members within three months and local media
made a hubbub, so state government had to built a raw road
3231
to that village. Before that there was no approach road. One
had to go tossing and tumbling at one's own risk. High-
school students of this village had to go on foot 11 Kms
passing through the forest.
Dire poverty on one side and a high school 11 Kms far
away, who would like to go to school ? And if a child does
not go to a school, what he has to do ? To go for labour with
parents ! After all everyone has to feed his tummy. The
government still believes that villagers are themselves
responsible for the deaths. Village Surpanch Chudamani Naag
says that the government had warned the people to use
mosquito-nets but they did not understand anything !
Oh ! Oh ! How one can afford mosquito-nets ? How
these people can buy mosquito-nets, when they have hardly
something to eat ?
Even after 62 years of so-called independence, thousands
of villages are there in the country, where daily labourers like
Zintu die everyday due to poverty and starvation. If God does
not have pity for those unfortunates, then how much pity will
the rhinoceros-skinned politicians have ? [Report : 'Gujarat
Samachar' dated 10-3-2010]
I remember one more scene. It is a story of Bhuj
(Kutchchh). There was marriage season. Amidst the season,
rains suddenly started and continued for three days. Invitees
could not come in many marriages. Many prepared sweet-
dishes were not used. How to dispose them, was the question.
Some remembered 'Manavjyot'. Institution who arranged for
food everyday to poor families. All surplus cooked foods
were given to 'Manavjyot' institution all three days. A weekly
magazine 'Abhiyan' published a photo of a poor mother and
her three children relishing the sweets and titled it as 'A feast
for poor due to untimely rains !' Bapu ! Please have a glimpse
of that photo of those halfnaked starving children of 65 years
old independent India ! I have specially put it on the title of
this book, remembering you, will you try to say something
to those who are busy remembering you daily ?
What is Enigma of Reservation ? What is its solution ?In this democracy, one cannot force anyone to change
his surname, but it should be quite constitutional to stop or
to deny any mention or reference of the religion, cast and
creed of any individual in educational institutions, firms,
hospitals etc. except in the forms of census. Secular
governments should immediately announce to follow the
constitution.
It is true that backward lower classes should get priority
in the matter of justice, but it is equally important that there
should be a beginning to give equal justice to backward
higher classes also.
It is necessary that backward higher classes should also
try to self-assess themselves in that direction, because they
have intelligence enough to realise easily who are exploiting
them. The irony is, these backward higher classes have a
mentality of the capitalist. They are always overawed with
well-to-do higher class and they take pride in their favours
or friendship. This well-to-do higher class is their real
exploiter, that they do not realise. In fact, this rich higher-
class is in the root of backward higher or lower classes and
the government should always think of legal ways to control
it. Backward higher class should try to pressurise the
government in that matter, otherwise the problem of backward
higher class will not be solved.
It is not always that black-marketing of goods only is
done, but basically black-marketting of intelligence is also
possible and it is done. There is no other go except to
minimise inequality between the values of intelligence and
those of labour, if we want to give employment to everyone
backward according to one's capability and if we want to stop
social and economical inequalities. Wise man can go through
the pages of histories to know, what happens, when a society
or a government fails in that direction.

and Solution' published in 1982, some 30 years ago. Second

Dreams of American Gandhi : Martin LutherThere is a great revolution in our world. In the mind
and the soul of mankind, a social revolution has started and
it says unanimously in one voice : 'We want to be free !'

I may be hanged for this. I may die. Even if in this
excersion, my death will happen, still I want others to say
that I met death in freeing the mankind.

Waiting for you !
You did not return
Once you went away !
And Jay Prakashji !
You became second Gandhi
In the end !
You were not seen again !
O Vinobaji !
You used to explain us
Gandhian thoughts through
Philosophical Vedas and Upnishads
You also did not show us your face.
Once you went away !
We, wretched people of Bharat
Wait for you and on and on
Remember Jay Prakashji again and again
And ask Vinobaji again and again
If he returns.

Eyes are full of tears
You threesome went away
leaving us helpless
And never returned !
But we have our God
Who watches us all the time.
When you forsook us
He looked at us.
You had no pity for us
But he has !
So he sent one special angel
Who has souls of you threesome
In one body
To satisfy hunger of our 125 crores !
To cover bodies of our 125 crores !
And to spare our lacs of children
From death due to lack of two handful grains
And to save our lacs of farmers
From commiting suicide
And to fill breasts of our mothers with milk !
That angel of God
Will sure help us ! Just see !
Why ? You ask, who is that angel ?
Don't you remember ?
You forgot ? Then listen !
Bapu ! You gave your surname to India, no ?
And even Jay Prakashji praised her like anything ?
Vinobaji also blessed her !
You all three forgot everything ? Everything ?
Ram ! Ram ! Ram !
Then listen ! You forgot that child
Whom Indira brought up with much fondling
You must have forgotton
But we see him four-five times for
Thirty-thirty minutes on T. V. news channels
Every year, Everything !
That Rahulji... who played in Indiraji's lap
and learnt walking taking her hand
That Indiraji's darling Rahulji
Now became a big man !
A real big-big man !
He has become almost a second Gandhi !
All your congress-men said
Even Manmohanji himself said
Rahul is our country's hope !
Gulam Nabi said,
'The next 40 years are Rahulji's only !'
[Add ten years more - That will make
century of your Congress !]
Soniaji said, Priyankaji said,
Shakeel Ahmed said, Arjunsing said,
Pranab Mukharji said, Manish Tiwari said,
Digvijaysinh said, Sheela Dixit said,
Umar Abdulla said, That Shot-gun said,
Jayaprada said, even Raj Babbar said,
'Rahulji - only will save the country !'
Rahul ! Rahul ! Rahul !
It's not futile that they all shout
'Gandhi ! Gandhi !'
And your name-wise Man-'Mohan' also
Focussed searchlight on Rahulji
And declared directly that
'Rahulji is our second Jay Prakashji'.
Vinobaji is only left...
We pray to God only :
'Make Rahulji second Vinobaji fast !'
Bapu ! You go on churning Spindle-wheel
Sitting up there !
And Jay Prakashji !
You only rest in peace.3635
Why muttering 'Revolution ! Revolution' ?
Baba ! Don't talk of Gandhian thoughts
mixing with Vedas and upnishads !
You only worry about
Your contemplations and meditations !
We have our God !
And another Rahulji !
And for us, Rahulji only is
Our Gandhi, our Jay Prakashji and our Vionobaji !
And Rahulji is our Angel !
In Rahulji's name, everything is covered !Ö

Where to catch Magan Mon ?
Nanubhai Naik
Son ! I was 20 years old
When one day, your mother,
in this hut, itself
Was tossing with labour-pains
To give bitrh to you !
In a somewhat remote village
Slogans were heard
'Jay Hind', 'Jay Hind',
'Vande Mataram'
'Mahatra Gandhiki jay',
'Jawaharlal Nehruki jay'
'Up fly our flag',
'Freedom be immortal'.
Slogans with cries of joy.
I remember for sure
When Jawaharlal hoisted our flag
Sounds of drums were heard
[That day - It was 15th August
when we got our freedom ! It was
all Latin and Greek to me !]
in the village
And you were born !
On the next day
When I went to Magan Mon
To drag away his dead calf
Magan Mon told me :
'O Visla ! Your child is lucky !
Your days of draging dead
animals have gone !
Now you don't have to drink
water of dirty puddle.
You need not have to move
hiding in the village.
You need not cut babool-sticks
for handful rice.
You need not drag dead cattle...
Your child will go to school
Will become an officer !
Your wife will not have to hear abuses
No one will have courage to molest her...
I was speechless -
stunnd, My son !
Bewildered I was !
Magan Mon again said :
'Don't stand there
looking stupid, Visla !
Jawahar himself told yesterday
When he hoisted the flag -
Nobody will remain poor now on.
Nobody will ramain hungry or
uneducated or homeless !'
Vah ! Kudos to Magan Mon !
He told me such a nice thing !
I rushed to your mother...
Told her : 'O my little bitch !
You delievered a lucky child yesterday !
Our fortunes are changing now !
You know what Jawaharlal
said hoisting the flag ?
I don't understand what he said...
I only repeat what
Magan Mon told me !
And then, My son !
We both went on dreaming
And dreaming...
SixtyÖ years passed
since... I'm 80 now !
You have become an old man
Your son also got old
He also have a son !
And this hut !
How many can it accomodate ?
We sleep outside
And I feel dejected for you
Could I built another hut !
How it would have been ?
It's my fault only
That Magan Mon deceived me !
I was such a fool !
I put faith in his talk...
During these sixty years
I remember Magan Mon on
your every birthday
I remember those
drums - those slogans
4039
Again I remember Magan Mon !
How he deceived me ?
But where to find him ?
In the skies, in heaven or in hell ?
Where to catch him ?
[New year's poem : Year 2007-Year 36th !]
Note : (1) A well-known journalist Dr. Pradip Pandya
congratulated me as soon as he read this poem. (2) This Magan
Mon was my father ! And this 'Visla' is not that 'Visram' that
took hold of my mind since long. In fact, his name was
different. When I was writting this poem, real happening,
accidently I wrote a name 'Visla' (Vishram).
'Salaam' : This is a story of people's
agony and no vulgarity !
'Salaam' is a collection of poems of the first rank Marathi
poet 'Mahesh Padgaonkar'. He had given 42 poems in this
collection. The price of this simple publication of 64 pages
is rupees sixty. Just now its eighth edition is being sold. In
the first poem 'Salaam', he had abused reporters of T. V.
Channels as 'eunuchs' and owners of power and riches as
'pimps'. The poet had abused himself after knowing agonies
and helplessness of 125 crore people. Nobody found it vulgar,
still I do not repeat that word here. In fact, it is only a tragic
story of pangs and helplessness of 125 crore people, written
in strong words. It is also a tragic story of his scornings after
seeing the people getting insults, getting robbed and tortured
at every step and finding himself so helpness. Who will say
it vulger ? Marathi Sahitya Parishad awarded this collection
but the poet did not accept the award because of some bad
comments from the Maharastra Government. Still Marathi
Sahitya Acedemy awarded the collection without caring for
the Maharastra Govt. declaring that a writer has every right
to say what he thinks proper. Freedom of speech is important
in democracy.
There were rumours in 1971 elections, that Indiraji
collected election-funds of 90 lacs of rupees from every
industry-icon. One does not know what was the truth but the
owners of almost all industries started collecting big black
money via rises of prices of their items by 10-15%. There
were also rumors about the commissions embezzed in the
purchase of arms and other equipments necessary for all the
three wings of army. It was said that it was distributed among
the middle to higher officers. The politicians had no idea
about this. They only collected funds from the industries.
Then the credit must go to Kwotorchy of Italy who taught
them how to raise funds in such manners. Bofors scam4241
started then and such scams reached to the height of the
purchase-deals of arms with Israel before the 2009 elections.
The scams will go on. The auther of this book started a big
campaign against it and had hot dicussions with the Collector
of Surat and the Minister of Industries, Shree Bhailalbhai
Patel. There were no security-commandos then. One could
directly see Secretories or Ministers. We strongly protested
to Monopoly Commission and then to the Secretory of
Minister of Industries of Central Government, Shree
Fernandes and Shree Morarji Desai also. I had given
everything in detail in my two books : 'What Is A Good
Government ?' and '65 suggestions for Amendment of the
constitution', I do not want to repeat here but since 1971,
Sahitya Sangam stopped sending new years greeting cards
and started a practice of sending 3-4 satirical poems on the
relevant issues every new years day. These poems were again
published by 'Sandesh', a daily newspaper for atleast 4-5
years with suitable response. Some other magazines also
published the poems. Some of them are published here also.
These poems only reflect the agonies of 125 crores of people
of this country.

If we call it a country of pimps,
Then they will break our heads
If we call it a country of mean and helpless
Then they will strike us on the road,
If we call it a country that can be purchased
Then they will block our way
If we said anything about duties of God or about leaders
Then they will catch and strike us in the corners
If we call it a country of exploiters
Then they will throw us from their companies
So my first salute to my neuter genderness
And then to all those 'hands' who strike
And then to my super holy sublime auspicious country
And to its great traditions !
Salute,
Dear brothers and sisters ! Salute to all.
If I had more hands, I would salute you with all hands
But forgive me, brothers !
I have only two hands and out of them
One left hand I put on my...buttocks
Afraid of kicks !
So salute with the right hand !
Salute to all - brothers and sisters ! Salute !

I am Not a Smoke of Chimney
Born from a flare of fireI am not a smoke of chimney,Heated history of labour I amMarked on the Sky,Earth’s dark linings I amI am a smoky flag of labourRearing in the empty stomachsNot as tears, I come out as a fireballWhere every honour declines.
- Ex. Prime Minister of India Late Shri V. P. Singh
I will continue my efforts to become like what allrespected - Messrs Jayantbhai Pathak,Bhagwatikumar Sharma, Ramanlal Pathak andLabhshankar Thakardada have understood me.Ö
Once we were talking with the learned critic poet ShriJayantbhai in our farm. During the talk, Rekhabahen said,'Nanubhai has no faith in religion, but he prints so many bookson religion. He worships God as an enemy and God gives himfruits.' At that time Jayantbhai said remarkably, 'Nanubhailives religion.' A Small man like me does not deserve suchcompliments, still I liked what that learned man had said.
Shri Bhagwatikumar Sharma, Ex. President of GujaratiSahitya Parishad, a vernacular language literary forum, myfriend and well-wisher of my whole family since last fiftyyears, has written 'Nanubapa - a big Banyan tree' and thencalled me 'Nagar Bapa (Grand father of the city)' and had saidthat 'Nanubhai has no enemy.'
A well-known literary figure and a 'rationalist' - learnedProfessor Shri Ramanbhai Pathak mentioned me as 'A man ofculture'.
And my another beloved poet-friend Shri LabhshankarThakar has written recently in a letter to Janakbhai, 'My saluteand kind regards to my compassionate, everloving friend andmy pioneer publisher Shri Nanubhai. He has an unique energy. He is synonym of love.' Not long ago, he also on telephone talkto Rekhabahen mentioned me as a man of culture.
I never believe in Almighty God, but I know, I cannotfully live like what all these outspoken four literary persons ofthe highest caliber described. But that gave me enough strengthto live like what they said. In future also, I will alwaysremember their such goodwishes, to live like that.
Ö All are well known writers, poets, journalists and rationalthinkers of Gujarat.
Real and fake faces
Behind many fake faces
My real face is getting suffocated.
Striking head all the while,
Very much tired by now.
To all these fake faces,
By tearing to take it out
Determined to expose these
Doing since last so many yearsBut now, it is getting lateWithin a short period of time
If I am not able to do that
Then This real face will certainly get destroyed
(Grief expressed 25-30 years ago) - Nanubhai Naik
Shri Bhagwatikumar Sharma, a well known writer, journalist and Ex. President of Gujarati SahityaParishad of Gujarat, presented a sonnet in a hallfull of audiance on the 83rd birthday of Shri
Nanubhai Naik admiring him as Nagar Bapa.
Divine Amalgamation
(Sonnet : Vasant Tilaka Ä Shri Bhagvatikumar Sharma)
Generosity, Love, Pride, Deep Warmth,Repeating heartfelt friendship towards all,labour-loving, hard-working diligentproduced a charming world out of nothing. -1
Tilled soil, got the crop by farming,Then went in the direction of word-sowingTaking pen engrossed in writing,Got slowly a smooth track of printing. -2
And entire success emerged kissing feet,Still an ardent desire in the heartTo give lowpriced easily available books,Established Books on the back of elephant. -3
Generosity, love, compassion, loyalty of work,In a divine amalgamation is our Nanubapa ! -4

Bapu ! First of all, I remember you, thus....
As a result of almost three years of Independence, on
my twentyfourth year, I wrote a novel named 'Inheritance of
slavery', but you were not remembered then. The very next
year, when I started writing the classical Epic poem 'The
story of Gandhi', I remembered you instantly. Just now, I do
not quite remember but after writing only about twenty pages,
I was very angry with you. Thus, you were first remembered
in somewhat different light. Those twenty pages were well-
preserved till they were destroyed in the devastaing flood of
Surat. Somehow or other, I had a feeling that only you were
responsible for the downfall of our country. After all, you had
left those unworthy people to rule over us.
My friendship with your son Harilal, was just growing
then, so I was in little dilemma as to where should I direct
my anger and against whom ? How an uncivilized, displeasant,
rude villager like me can express his wrath ? I am still little
angry with you, but Harilal had planted you so deeply in my
mind that I am sure, whatever anger left in me would be
thrown away by you and you would make me if not pure just
like you, but a little worthy person, atleast. With that faith,
I remember you often and want to offer some gifts at your
feet.
During those sixty-two years you have constantly
possessed my mind and debated with me and my friend, your
son Harilal. So many times, though you admonished us, you
also believed us and made amendments. In fact, you always
said that your beliefs changed as you learnt and your latest
ideas should be counted as true and final. Thats why I and
Harilal keep considering how you would be in the present
scenario.
Hardly a day has passed without remembering you during
those sixty-two years. I remembered you every moment,
debated and made queries with you. Whenever I remembered
you, I got angry with you, but made compromises with you
also. At this age of 85, I do not know how many things of
'Love and Hate' I still remember and how many I forgot. On
your part, it was only love, that I must confess. I don't know,
what will become of things that I still remember. Those
might be swept away in the turmoil of time, some of them
might be rewinded on my worn away taperecorder, but I don't
want to rewind just now.
Bapu, just now I only want to remind you of your latest
named 'Gandhi Family'. From 1947 to 2011 A.D. - during
those 64 years for complete fifty years - let me talk in the
language of 'Gabbar' of 'Sholey' - 'Poo...rey Pachaas Saal' -
our country was ruled over by your nearest and dearest
'Nehru Dynasty'. Some period in between was surely missing
without their rule, off course, but once again, with Rahulji's
entry, the whole atmosphere is again charged with all wishful
probablities.
Are not many others associated with this ? Who says
'No' ? Others are not interested ? 'Gandhi' is your blessed
family, having your surname too and ruling of complete 50
years behind it and Rahulji also admitted that this 'Gandhi'
surname has helped his speedy rise in politics.
Are others not that worthy ? I don't want to discuss this
further, but this is only a hint about 'Gandhi Clan'. So many
others follow this trend of Nehru-Gandhi family.
Bapu ! With this 'Gandhi Family' I only want to reproduce
that long 'Election Episode' which you must have seen sitting
in the heaven. Let me also refresh my recollections again by
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 51 52 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
reminding you. Please believe that all others have the same
qualities that this 'Gandhi Clan' has.
Just now, elections of our 'Parliament' (which you had
once named a 'Prostitute') were held. I haven't seen this
'Parliament' - only heard about it in the newspapers. During
those elections, I always remembered you daily. With much
noise and drama, the battle was faught. You may not be
knowing, but now-a-days big electronic news channels are
rulling the hours on T.V. For the electronic media, its a big
marketing business.
Are we having democracy, no ? Bapu, you told us to
take power only to serve people. But here, the contestants
spend millions and billions of rupees and make hubbub only
to get elected. Do they spend money to serve people ? You
only quoted 'Parliament' as 'Prostitute', but a prostitute is
much holier than these people. How could you know about
this marketing of 'Democracy' ? It's a big big business ! Did
you ever hear of marketing a big business of serving people?
Now-a-days to multiply this business, people keep 'Marketing
Managers', 'Ad-agencies', 'War Room'. And how expert these
marketing magicians are, do you know ? Its a small play of
their left hand to make a pauper a prince or a tiny ant a gaint
elephant and Ad-agencies also play their role. All want their
'Pound of Flesh' in this big business of Democracy.
Bapu ! These Ad-agency people are not far behind !
Undergarments, Lipstick, Roose and Hair-oil for young ones
... And that Amitabh does an Ad for some hair-oil... Sorry,
Bapu ! You might not be knowing Amitabh whom T. V.
media has made 'Big-B'. This Amitabhbhai reached one village
in Pune District to become 'a farmer'. What was the necessity
for a cinemawala to become a farmer ? Oh, you must be
joking ! Why talk about only Amitabhji, Abhishek, Aishvarya,
Dharmendra, Rekha, Rani Mukharji and some Khans... and
so many others wanted to become farmers ! You told us that
labourers and farmers will rule in 'Swaraj', no ? These are
the farmers and labourers ! Though their ancestors were not
farmers, so Amitabhbhai, Aishvarya and Rani Mukharji were
subsequently involved. Amitabh declared that he wants to
give away this land to displaced people of dams !
But Bapu ! Amitabh was lucky to be declared as a
farmer and became an owner of the land. Immediately, he
declared not to donate his land to anybody ! Let the displaced
people go to hell ! Multinationals make ads to sell their
products and for those ads, Amitabh charges 10crores ! Bapu!
You spent your whole life counting Rupees, Annas and Pice.
Don't say a word about these people, unless you want to hear,
'Shut up, old man !' Otherwise keep silence ! Bapu ! For
writing accounts of Rupees- Anna-pice, in the world of income
of couple of hundred crores. In case of ads, gilding of false-
good over the facts is always necessary. These celebrities
have to do this. All these come to mind when I remember
you. I can't forget when I daily witness this !
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 53 54 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
Bapu ! This Business of Ad-agency is to
show false as true
Let us go again to that ad-agencywala ! It is a business
to show false as true only. They are so crafty that they can
sell gilded zinc-alloy as pure gold of 100 Carats ! They know
this young generation very well. They find so many
contrivances to deceive today's youths and this poor youngsters
run after anything they see on T.V. The ad-agencies told
Rahulji that opportunities should be given to youths. Let
them enter politics. They will elect a government of youths.
After that, from everywhere winds started blowing. Priyankaji
was also involved and then Wadraji also. They all claim that
they are young and they will fight elections ! And in the
election campaign of five days, Priyankaji wore 'Saries' of
how many colours and how much they costed; one does not
know. ! In Nehru's family, pomp and spendour were parts of
their lives, right from Motilal Nehru ! Lohiaji once uttered
in the parliament that Nehru's daily expense exceeded that
of president Kennedy or that of Briton's PM Macmillon and
gave the figure of rupees 25 thousands daily ! Soniaji bought
a 'Sari' of 26 thousand from the Handicraft Fair ! And Sheelaji
- C. M. of Delhi - an embodiment of service - also bought
a 'Sari' of 16 thousand. Then why Priyanka should lag behind?
She campaigned wearing new coloured saries every day !
She wore Indiraji's sari one day ! Well - Priyankaji is taller
than Indiraji ! And at the time of voting, she must look young
and smart ! So she wore modern jeans and top !
Here media- management comes to help ! News channels
are everready ! Look ! How much dress - sense Priyankaji
has ! She knows perfectly what to wear and when and how!
Nobody can beat Priyankaji ! This is media-management!
Bapu ! You will not be able to learn this ! Forget about your
loin-cloth ! Bapu ! Now-a days, media-management is done
in war-rooms and these ad-agencies have connections
everywhere !ÖBapu ! You might have watched T. V. in heavens, no?
There is no other pre-occupation there ! Just switch on T.
V. as soon as you are free ! I just say this only as I thought.
So Bapu ! Even if 70-75 youths get opportunities in
elections, out of 18 crores of youths, that should be considered
enough and that is important just now. The only benefit is
that out of them, five to ten youths may get some crores of
welth in 2-5 years ! So that is an opportunity ! The remaining
city and village youths are only target-youths for voting!
Govindacharya said that sons of ministers become ministers
and sons of P. M. become P. M and voter' children become
voters ! Bapu ! You must have known that ! Rahulji invited
youths to join politics ! And see ! How many have joined?
Read the names of youth servers of democracy ! (1) Rahul
Gandhi (2) Sachin Pilot (3) Priya Dutt (4) Milind Deora (5)
Jyotiraditya Scindhia (6) Raghavendra - son of Karnatak CM
(7) Anurag Thaker (8) Dushyant Raje (9) Akhilesh Yadav -
son of Malayam (10) His nephew Dharmendra (11) Supriya
Surve - daughter of Sharad Pawar (12) Shailaji - she is
minister in central Govt. may be 22 years old (13) Nilesh
Rane (14) Jyoti Mirgha (15) Navin Jindal (16) Dipendra
Huda (17) Sandip Dixit (18) Ajay Maken (19) Mausam Noor
Ghani (20) Arun Yadav (21) J. M. Reddy (22) Jiten Prasad
(23) Vijay Bahuguna (24) Shruti Moghra (25)VarunGandhi
(26) Rajbirsing (27) Jayant Chaudhari (28-29-30-31) Family
Ö This Story is of 2009 polls.
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 55 56 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
members of Karunanidhi - Sons, daughter - son-in-law (32)
Samir Bhujbal (33) Meenakshi Natrajan (34) Manish Tiwari
(35) Shah Nawaj Husain (36) Umar Abdulla etc. etc. etc.
They are all owners of multi-millions. They have remained
ministers, MPs or MLAs since generations. Once Shailajaji
was interviewed by some channel. During interview, she
commented with lot of smiles that whenever a guest came
to visit them, she would always ask, whom would he like
to see - a M. P., a MLA or a central minister ? If he wanted
to see a central Govt. Minister - she was there !
Bapu ! Govindacharya once said that there are four
enemies of democracy : Groups or parties, brokers, money
and arms ! Broker does not mean only of prostitute. Whoever,
with a greed to get some advantage, tries to flatter only
unworthy man and upliftment for him, is also a broker.
Create a party, promote some brokers for it, spend money
and use arms, if necessary ! Capitalists, who use power in
this fashion are all enemies of democracy.
Bapu ! Do not frown ! In this race, persons having
meager 100-200 crores, can not win ! Bapu ! Do you think,
these young MPs are useful for any other task, but to shout
slogans of 'Rahul Gandhi Zindabad' ? Don't you know, why
they are all shouting slogans ?
Bapu ! just listen to 18 crores of young men and women
of 'Bharat' who are misused by such professional politicians!
And who are such professional politicians ? Including
aforesaid 34 new politicians, totally 190 families rule in
'Bharat', as claimed by some persons ! Rahulji has dared to
challenge for the post of PM, only with their help !Hardly
200 - 500 youths out of the remaining 18 crores may be
elected as 'Surpanch' or as 'President' of Taluka or District
panchayats! Otherwise their next generations will have to
wait ! Rahulji had invited youth to join politics and those
owners of multi-millions have came forward to serve Dalits,
downtroddens and have-nots who live always in dire poverty
in 65 years old freedom.
you know all this, Won't Bapu ? But I remember you
always while reminding you about it. Now in the year 2012,
look at a scene on news-channels of Priyanka and her two
children ! They are smiling wearing costly garlands of flowers
for the photo-sessions and then sitting on the dias with
Soniaji, she was pinching Soniaji's cheek ! What a scene !
T. V. channels repeatedly showed that scene with lots of
praises of Priyankaji ! It is now certain that this country
during next 100 years will be fortunate enough to get services
of not only of Priyankaji but of her husband and of her
children ! But Rahulji strictly said that these youths will not
get any power without getting elected. It is not just a prattling!
One need not see a dream of becoming PM ! You have to
take birth in Gandhi's family ! Don't run to become president
of Congress party even ! Soniaji is still there for record-
breaking 15 years ! Vinod Dua just commented that only
prime ministers take birth in Nehru-Gandhi family and Bapu!
Rahulji's left hand Beni prasadji also said that Nehru family
gives birth to PMs - not just ordinary ministers ! Bapu ! We
have only to taunt you remembering you, no ?
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 57 58 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
Much ado' about poor woman's loaf !
Yes ! Yes ! Now I remember ... that a little piece of loafcan cost 25 lacs rupees ! Bapu ! Don't frown at me ! I onlyheard that from some people ! Only my God knows what istrue. Some say the loaf costed 25 lacs, some say it costedone and half crore ! Let me start from the beginning ! Twoof Gandhians themselves tried to explain that siting in myoffice and I did not know whether it was true or false. Somemay have tried to add something... Rahulji wanted to sharea loaf of bread with poor Kalavati's family in her hut ! Well,he is accustomed to AC and to fly in helicopters and planes,in midst of commandoes, how he know any Kalavati ? Well, those marketing men found one Kalavati ! Now suppose shelives in a dirty hut amidst slums, then how Rahulji can passsome hours there ? It is easy to get infection ! And what abouthis security ?
So their huts should be disinfected and roads to theirhuts should be cleaned. The flour used for the loaves shouldbe checked and the earthen plate to bake the loaves for theprince ! should be brought new. Pure mineral water is to bemanaged and cotton-mattresses should also be disinfected. All these are not small matters. Nobody mentioned anythingabout them but it comes to my mind that a team of 10-15persons might have managed taking trouble for atleast 5-6days ahead ! How could we know ? T. V. media did not showanything about it. May be these all are my conjectures only!
But Bapu ! What about Rahulji's security ? There isalways a danger of terrorism. There must be some commandoswith him with 10-15 doormets ! Don't you know aboutdoormets ! Years ago one of your devotees himself explained
about this doormet ! It is only like a dog who wags his tailseeing a piece of bread in his master's hand, moving all roundhim, in the hope of getting it. You must have also knownabout it. Harilal must have explained to you, who are thedoormets and how and from where they emerge and howmany benefits they get. It is enough for the moment but howa villager like me could know, how many crores are spentand how much part these people get ? Let someone explainto me, what is true and what is false from what we read inthe papers and what we saw on T. V.!
Bapu! Do not frown on me! just listen to me! same onetells me that when this whole episode goes under control ofAd-agenceis, some piece of the loaf should go to media-managers also. The 'Promos' of the loaf episode are shownover and over again for hours for atleast 2-3 days and whatis the charge of these news-reviewings? The charge iscalculated on the basis of some thousand bucks per someseconds /minutes. The total charge might reached to croresof rupees! Who cares! Every pollitician does not serve peoplewith own money!
Bapu ! Filmwalas have taught these tricks ! They spend4-5 crores or more in making a film and keep almost sameamount for media-management. They prepare some 'Promos'to show on T. V. for some days ago and arrange for interviewson news-channels. A film-producer may spend 5 crores inmaking a film but has to spend other 7-8 crores for media-management. What lucrative earnings for the T. V. channels!I am not sure who taught whom- the filmwalas or thepoliticians ? It is said about the media-management that oneparty spent 1200 crores, another party spent 800 crores andtotally 3,000 crores by all parties, together. A party whospends the highest, wins the polls generally and gets anopportunity to serve people of 125 crores for 5 years ! soto get such an opportunity, every party has to go to those ad-agencies and media. The ad-agencies have a hold on media. They know how to manage the media and how much shouldbe given to whom. Media arrange to call different groups ofsmart young boys and girls and give them mikes in theirhands and instruct them what and how to put some issues,
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 59 60 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
some aged and wise-looking men advise and let the young-ones to come forward to show that only the young-ones areable todo something.
Bapu ! Remember Rupert Murdock of Fox-newschannels who managed some youngsters to oppose BarakObama and Obama had to manage against that propagandawith the help of another well-known channel of RichardWollfie.
In our Gujarat, one noted journalist went to some citieson behalf of some channel and arranged programmes-debatesand tried to defame the Gujarat Government by managingto get from certain persons his preplanned answers of definiteissues. This premeditated plan failed in one city, where certainother people started argueing. He had to run away to anothercity ! This only can happen in Gujarat, because you had sownsome seeds there ! Otherwise, in other states, people go onclapping and say whatever they are taught by the media-menand shout 'Jay to our young leader !' etc.
Did you heard the words : 'PM-in-making' ? Well, whatever it is. If marketing of 'PM-in-waiting' is to be done, why not of PM-in-making ?
Bapu ! Don't be angry ! Our well-known thinker GunvantShah said that an amount of 500 crores rupees will be spentin the 'PM-in-making' ! When I think of this 'PM-in-making',I was doubtful about Rahulji, whether he will be able to ruleover this huge country, if he ever become PM ? He is stillnot out of his mother's shadow. But see ! So many ministersand leaders including Manmohan Sing unanimously said thatonly Rahulji is the only saviour of this vast country !
See, Obama spent millions and millions of Dollars aftermarketing to get votes of Indians of America by usingGandhiji's name, tridants and images of Gods - Shanker andHanumanji. In America, this marketing to capture 'Votebanks'goes on from the very beginning ! Obama had to spendmillions of Dollars to get an opportunity to serve people. Itis not easy to get such opportunity. One cannot serve peopleso easily ! When I see and hear about it, a villager like mecannot refrain from remembering you !
Priyankaji Asked : Why Do You Call Congress Old ?
Am I An Old Woman ?
Bapu ! Whenever I remember Priyankaji, I remember
you also. You gave your surname 'Gandhi' to Indiraji, no ?
So with the 'Loaf episode', 'Priyanka episode' is also connected.
Bapu ! This Priyankaji is the spokes - woman of Congress.
She speaks for Congress as if she is the whole and soul of
Congress. Once Baruaji said that 'Indira is India'. So the
politicians go on repeating history. We can well say that
Gandhi family itself is India ! Priyankaji is also one of the
family, so she can speak whatever she thinks proper. Recently
someone called Congress, an old woman and she instantly
reacted with a question : 'Am I an old woman ?' Indirectly
she hinted that she is Congress !
Then the episode of 'Indiraji's sari' happens. Then Varun
Gandhi enters in the scene and with that only Priyanka can
advise him to read 'Gita'. Who else, other than Priyanka, who
had fully studied Gita, can advise Varun ? Bapu ! Who knows
other 'Gandhi' than this 'Gandhi family' ? Once you were only
Gandhi ! But you are now extinct ! Today, India is ruled
under these 'Gandhis' - Soniaji, Rahulji, Priyankaji and Robert
Wadra Gandhi ! Now-a-days Wadraji is also seen with
Priyankaji on T.V. ! 'Promos' of such episodes go on for some
days on T.V. Priyankaji is the spokes-woman of Congress !
Who can explain her that 'Gita' was advised by Krishna, in
the battle field of Kurusketra, when Arjun denied to fight
against his cousins 'Kauravas'. Krishna vehemently advised
Arjun to kill felonious wicked cousins ! But who is going
to remember such things ? Even he who advised to read 'Gita'
does not read 'Gita' !
Bapu ! Such gimicks go on T.V. I remembered this
epidsode, because it happened recently. It will be forgotten
as a new episode happens.
See the irony ! There are news in the papers today ! That
Kalavati wants a certificate that Rahulji had come in her hut,
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 61 62 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
stayed there and had a loaf with her family and promised her
a new house while leaving ! 'Please, Rahulbhaiya ! Do
Something ! Nobody remember about it and whenever I
approach them, they behave as they do not know me ! So,
please give me a certificate that you came in my hut, had
a lunch and promised me for a new house !'
Bapu ! This Kalavati is a fool person ! How can she
expect that Rahulji will care for her and remember her, when
he has to worry about 125 crores of Indians ? Kalavati was
really lucky! Some partypeople advised her to fight elections
against Congress, promising her a ticket. Well, Kalavati was
ready to stand in the elections and registered candidature
also. Then everything was settled as she wanted ! Kalavati
announced that she is very ill and does not want to fight
election !
Bapu ! That was not a happy end ! Within an year, the
son-in-law of that Kalavati commited suicide because of his
poverty ! Media could have cooked up another episode out
of that incident ! But Rahulji was lucky ! No media man gave
any importance to it and it was forgotten soon.
But Bapu ! See the misfortune of Rahulji ! He met
another Shivkumari like Kalavati !
About one and half years ago, Congress-prince Rahulji
and one Mr. David Miliband - a one time forign-Minister of
U. K. went to a village Semra in Rahulji's constituency
Amethi. There they met a poor widow Shivkumari.
Amethi is that constituency from where atleast 13
members from Nehru family - right from Jawaharlal's father
Motilalji, uncles Shyamlalji and Kishanlalji, then Sanjay,
Maneka, Rajivji, Soniaji, Rahulji, were elected since 86
years ! But irony is, that there is no development in Amethi
till today ! Even there are no complete roads even upto
Pilibhit and no other basic conveniences and necessities.
There was a huge crowd gathered to welcome them in the
hope of getting some conveniences. Both Rahulji and
Miliband stayed whole night at Shivkumari's little hut with
her five children. God only knows, what both promised to
the villagers but nothing fruitful happened since their visit
18 months ago. Villager's hopes are not fulfilled yet ! Who
will hear to their demands ? Media have to keep mum, when
such things happen ! But if BJP or other parties were involved,
media would have created a big uproar ! But involved here
was your party Congress, Bapu !
Shivkumari waited for these 18 months ! She has no
regular income and promises of a well-built house and a
permanent job, are not fulfilled. She complains that though
she got a small house of bricks and clay, but it has no roof,
no windows or doors, she gets only 45-50 rupees daily after
hard work in farms and her family has to maintain in three
pieces of loaves most of the time.
See ! How flop was the show ! But again media were
liberal to Rahulji !
Well, let us forget about Kalavati and Shivkumari !
Lacs of Dalits of this country are ready to welcome
Rahulji ! This business of democracy goes on unintrerrupted
and Rahulji is not all alone in it. There are atleast 50 parties
in the country ! They all have to survive and this business
is so vast that the parties get their benefits according to their
capacities. It is said in the last elections, that about 50 thousand
crores of black money from Swiss Banks were used. Some
also claimed that other 50 thousand crores were spent and
the news-channels got about 300-400 crores, income as the
black money.
Bapu ! Don't rise your B.P. Some years ago, when I
was travelling in the second class of a train, some passengers
were discussing about Barua's comment of 'Indira is India',
one of them commented that such dormets are like tamed
dogs. They will tear up the whole country and eat away !
Then all started remembering you, Bapu !
Today, that game is repeating after 24 years.
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 63 64 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
Our foreign Minister (now President) Pranab Mukharjee
said that days are not far away when Rahulji will become
P.M. Congress General secretory Digvijaysinh also said the
same thing, while spokesman Shakeel Ahmed was sure that
Rahulji had joined the young generations with Congress. If
Rajivji became P. M. at the age of 40, why not Rahulji at
38 ? (Now he is 42). Another spokesman Manish Tiwari was
of the same opinion, Priyanka predicted that Rahul will
become P.M. after three years. Gulam Nabi is of the opinion
that no other person than Rahulji is born to become P.M. of
this country ! The next 40 years are only for Rahulji. Almost
all leaders are agreeing in that matter, either due to some fear
or some greed. Even P.M. Manmohan Singh said that Rahulji
is country's only hope ! It is said that when a ship drowns,
the rats first of all jump in the sea. As NDA's ship is sinking,
BJP's partners are running away one by one. Shot-gun
(Shatrugna) Sinha wanted to become CM of Bihar. When
that was not possible, he praised Rahulji and said that he is
very hard-working and is a patron of poors ! His future is
bright. Jaya Pradaji also praised him and Raj Babbar (Who
is he ?), who recently became one of the spokes-person of
the congress party; also said that Rahulji is second Gandhi!
What a tribute ! Babbarji ! And I remember you, Bapu !
Whatever Rahulji should do or not to do, to know that
one must go in the root of the problems. And how Rahul can
go to roots ? He is almost all his life, in the company of
multimillionaires and always with the callous and
powergreedy politicians. One has to pass through the agonies
of poverty, to know it fully. That is not possible with a person
who is a part and parcel of the ruling family. Jawaharji first
announced that blackmarketeers should be hanged at the
streets, first lamp-posts! Not a single blackmarketeer was
hanged till then. Indiraji gave slogans of 'Remove Poverty',
nothing happened. Then Rajivji remembered that slogan but
the poors only remained 'Votebanks'. It would have been
better, if something could be done about removing poverty.
Some other parties also liked that slogan, They were also
drawing big slice of Muslim votebank. Muslims have
remained poor. They are not educated. They are left to their
fate and are not protected. How much this votebank will
work ?
I do not believe Rahulji as an enemy. I only believe him
as a symbol of the electoral democratic system - not even
in India, but in all over world. He is young. He is somewhat
sensitive also - only if he takes a Gandhian way. He is an
Indian civilian like me. He has same rights as I have; but
he is amongst such people, that he is not able to do anything.
I appeal to Rahulji to take some advise from Shree R. K.
Dhawan who believed that Rajivji suffered much due to the
bad company of some unwanted people and Rahul also
should get away from that vicious circle.
I also want to appeal to Rahulji to find many gentlemen,
philosophers, thinkers and elders and try to live in their
company, as he is quite ignorant about the culture of Bharat.
He is always surrounded by flatterers and has almost no
information about the real problems of the people. He has
not that much experience to find their solutions. He will not
be able to realise people's hardships in the true sense, by only
staying one night at some poor's hut. He has to find such
a rule that can manage at least two-time meals for everyone
in this vast country without much trouble. I only ask him
to come out of his shrouds and see the world with open eyes.
He is still very young. He has got many years still and I
appeal him to give only ten years to know Bharat and its
people. If he does that with the integrity and conviction, then
I am sure he will be strong enough to live with the reputation
that he got from his surname 'Gandhi'. So Rahulji, let us
forget our past and let us make this world worth-living as
Gandhi said. Then nobody will say that you are a duplicate
Gandhi. You are educated and intelligent and if you work
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 65 66 / Bapu ! Then, You Were RememberedB.T.Y.R. 5
with this conviction, then you will be able to stand on your
legs and will not need any flattering adviser.
Bapu ! I remind this Nehru-Gandhi family remembering
you. You only bestowed your surname to Indiraji with much
trust and love. Kaul family did not like their surname 'Kaul',
so it changed to 'Nehru' (living on the banks of some canal
or a stream (Nehar). Indira kept her surname 'Nehru' even
after her marriage. Then you gave her your surname 'Gandhi'
and she instantly adopted 'Gandhi' as her surname. Now
Indiraji has passed away and I appeal to Rahulji to accomplish
his surname. Nobody is enemy of the people. Rahulji is also
not an enemy. Public will love anybody who tries to serve
them sincerely - he may be a Hindu, or a Muslim, or a
Christian or a Jew or a downtrodden ! He may be even Rahul
Gandhi !
Bapu ! I have written this much remembering you !
Please give them all your wisdom.
Figures of election-expenses in Congress party
rule, the party which Gandhiji advised to scatter
Bapu ! You were not prepared to believe that a
'Government of the people, by the people and for the people'
can be formed only when people elect some candidates by
giving their votes. So you thought of changing that
parliamentary democratic system. At the age of 64, you
resigned from the Congress party and advised to scatter the
whole party. It was not to be and that electoral democracy
is still continued. In your time, there was a meager beginning
of election-expenses. Still you were embarrassed then. But
only if you hear about election-expenses of today, then... ?
Look at the 2009 elections. There were 3,500 candidates
who fought elections. One newspaper had given a table of
expenses, only calculating the rightful expenses every
candidate could use.
1. As per candidate, rightful expense was 25 lacs. So
the expenses of 3,500 candidates were one thousand, three
hundred and seventy five crores of Rs. (i. e. 3,500 × 25 lacs
= 13750000000 Rs.)
2. Government expenses after election were 10 thousand
crore Rs.
3. The total expenses of all leaders were 20 thousand
crore Rs. which include helicopter charges, advertises-
expences, rallies, posters, vehicles, wine and gift-articles
expenses.
4. Black-money expense of every candidate was about
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 67 68 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
3 crores. Total expenses of 3500 candidates were 10 thousand
500 crore Rs.
5. The same newspaper in some other articles, quoted
prices of one to ten thousand per second of broadcasting on
T.V. of the advertisements and again in form of news,
interviews of leaders, some concocted debates etc. I am not
able to calculate exact amount of such expenses. Even print
media also charge of printing photographs, news and
interviews now-a-days. I do not know how many zeroes
should be added, but let us put that figure ten thousand crore
rupees.
6. Again the anchors of T.V. channels show promos of
different episodes just like the loaf-episode of Kalavati and
Shivkumari, Priyanka episode etc. of 20-25 minutes again
and again for days together. The expenses of such promos
are beyond our calculations. Let us put an amount of 5,000
crore rupees.
7. the expenses of colourful full pages advertisements
in daily newspapers by different departments of UPA
Government, before the elections, were rupees six thousand
crores.
8. Rupees one thousand crore were spent to popularise
Adwani's image in online media and mobile services.
9. BJP rented three advertising agencies for canvassing.
They were given four crore rupees each i. e. total expenses
12 crores.
10. BJP rented one lac cars, helicopters and planes.
Their total expense was 100 crores.
11. The expenses of interviews of Gujarat CM and
Shree Adwaniji during their flight in the plane and its relaying
on T.V. channels over and over again, were 200 crores.
12. I do not know the actual figures spent by candidates
in order to get tickets to fight elections. The expense may
be five crores each. Let us put the total amount to be 1,000
crores.
(Bapu ! If we try to calculate the expenses of arranging
election-meetings and bringing hired audience crowds and
arranging for their food and giving them cash, they may
amount to an yearly budget of Indian Government ! Let us
forget abosut that!)
And Bapu ! We have to put expenses of your Congress
party 4-5 times more than BJP, and those of smaller parties
according to their strengths. Simple illeterate voter is deceived
every time and remains there and there only, even after
voting for one or another party. BJP ruled only for 5-6 years.
It can not compete with Congress, who ruled for 50 years,
so we have seen tragic end of 'India shining' and 'PM-in-
waiting'.
You must have read what M. J. Akber said. He presented
the gist of BJP's whole excercise by saying that though BJP
tried its best; but could not manage media properly, so it was
defeated.Ö What does it show ? That the BJP party could not
pay big amounts to the Marketing and Ad-kings ? So Bapu!
You and your 'Hind-Swaraj' also were remembered during
the elections.
Ö The auther of this book had given 'What Is A Good
Government ?' in 1999 A. D. and '65 Suggestions for Constitutional
Amendments' in 2000, in Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi and English.
5th editions of all these books are sold. We give 'What is a good
Government' at a very low price and the other book was sent free.
We have sent almost 3,000 copies of both these books to all MPs,
all MLAs of all states and others at our own cost. The first
acknowlegment came from Varun Gandhi's. PA. Gandiji's
granddaughter Mrs. Sumitra Kulkarni and Mr. N. Vittal of CVC
also gave his fine reaction. The election commission put those
books in their library and adopted two of its 65 suggestions.
The constitutional amendment commission suggested about
400 pages-ful of suggestions to, NDA Government. The NDA
Government accepted 15 suggestions and those all were from my
two books. Out of them NDA Govt. started building North-South
and East-West six lane roads and dams on the rivers and joining
them by canals. In the year 2004, 250 ministers were relieved from
the government by accepting my suggestions. The act of the Right
To Information - accepted by UPA Govt. in 2004 was also from
my suggestions.
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 69 70 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
Bapu ! The politicians of the whole world
start proclaiming your name whenever
the elections are held
Bapu ! Mr. Obama remembered you so much that I also
started to remember you.
The thing is that American Whites do not like Black
Obama. One American couple came to my visit. I only told
them about writting a book on Obama. They at once suggested
to publish it into English also.
Bapu ! Obama wants to have lunch with you ! You
know, Bapu ! Here Shahrukh Khan, Ash or Hrutvik etc.
charge crores of rupees for dining with. American sugar-
lobby collected ten times more subsidy against giving election-
funds of billions of Dollars to Obama. Not only the sugar-
lobby, but other industrialists also give election funds and
recollect afterwards millions and billions of Dollars. Bapu!
You do not know these benefits of subsidies ! It is not in your
capacity to understand the illusions of subsidy ! But as we
have to change the parliamentary governing system, you will
have to know about it.
Then listen ! The cost price of sugar in America is
much. Who will buy it ? So the sugar-lobby there, shows its
cost price one and half times higher than the original. Again
they show lower prices of sugar of the countries where they
want to export, Thus they show much too higher amount of
deficit to the Government, so that the government gives
subsidies to compansate the deficit. Now the sugar-lobby
tries to sell sugar to the countries where there is artificial
shortage of sugar. Here, in India, We have also a very strong
sugar-lobby. There is no scarcity of sugar in this country, if
the peasents get its fair price, but India is such a country
where politicians openly can intrigue any matter. India exports
sugar at a very low price to the poor countries where there
is scarcity and thus incurs great deficit. Now India suffers
from artificial scarcity of sugar, so the American sugar-lobby
with the help of Indian politicians, exports sugar at a much
higher price. What if, sugar-lobby has to give 20-30 percent
to the mediatories ? Both the governments - Obama's or
Indian - know about this, but who will utter a word, if they
all get their shares ? This whole business of scarcity or other,
is preplanned. Everybody knows about it. Bapu ! Do you
know, why all politicians rush to remember you ? Who is
going to give election-funds without any hope of getting
back in multiples ? So Bapu ! Do not hesitate to charge less
than ten lacs of Dollars for dining with Obama. He keeps
your photo in his office, so he will give you extra 2-3 lacs
as a copy-right if you ask for it. Obama, like the politicians
of our country, needs you. Even other leaders also want your
help, so they all are infatuated with your name, Bapu ! If you
start charging Dollars-Pounds for the permission to use your
name, they all will readily gather around you, calling you
'Sir', 'Sir'. After all they all have to fight elections. Bapu !
Do not loose this opportunity ! And beware ! Do not start
again your theories of truth and fair means ! We know, you
do not want these Dollars and Pounds for you. You will only
distribute them amongst the poors and starving people. Bapu!
Please let them get two time bread !
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 71 72 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
Bapu ! How Pompous Is Our Foreign-Minister!
India Is Not A Country Of Beggars Now !
Bapu ! Let us go to Delhi. There also everybody likeme, remembers you. I told about Soniaji's sari of 26 thousandrupees and about Sheelaji's sari of 16 thousand and alsoabout Priyankaji's coloured saries. While you only wore aloin-cloth almost all your later life, so you were reallyperturbed; but you are not an uncultured villager like me, youwill not be able to abuse anybody. Instead, if you will thinkof going on fast for a few days, it may be possible thatnobody will try to end your fasts. There is Obama-culturein the Government to-day as there is T.V. culture in thecountry ! The daily-newspapers and news-channels so high-lighted Soniaji's plea to Congress MPs, MLAs and theMinisters to cut 20% of their salaries, that 78 crore poorsstarted dreaming of happiness. (How do you know thatmillions and millions of rupees are to be saved, Then a newschannel suddenly in the breaking news unleased a secret ofSoniaji's compaign of thrift by declaring that our ForiegnMinister was staying at a 5-star hotel since last 100 daysinstead of government bungalow and the daily rent of thesuite of the hotel was one lac 75 thousand rupees per daywith extra charge of one lac for the dining, break-fast andphone-services. That is everyday expense of about three lacrupees for staying in a luxurious suite of a hotel ! i. e. onecrore every month ! Three to three and a half crore of rupeesfor hundred days.
Then why Mr. Shashi Tharoor deputy minister, shouldlag behind? He also stayed at a hotel, spending a lacbucks
every day! Christa Guines, wife of Shashi Tharoor is fromCanada. She is there on a big post in the foreign-ministry.She has invested about 214.5 million Dollars there. Butforget about her. Shashi Tharoor has divorced her and hasmarried some other lady. One news channel gave their photos! It was a treat, Bapu ! Why should I lie ? And that too beforeyou - a truth-lover ?
A company named Alfas paid the hotel-bills of ShashiTharoor. This Tharoor is Soniaji's special. He has a thought-setting with Soniaji. One news - channel arranged aprogramme of 'Filam Promotion Ke Panch Funde'. I will letyou know, if some channel arranges a programme of 'PMpromotion ke Das Funde'.
Now the Foreign Minister claims that the hotel is
charging me only 4 thousand a day for staying. Do not get
perplexed, Bapu ! These hotelwalas are very generous people.
Finding the minister's difficulties, they had given a concession
of one lac, 71 thousand ! Please, do not ask me, why they
are so generous ! Ask Obama !
Ex-MPs do not vacate their bungalows and the elected
MPs are not prepared to take possessions of their alloted
bungalows. Not less than 100 MPs asked forchanging their
bungalows and 36 more are waiting for them to vacate their
residences. Some ministers and MPs have already spent 21
crore rupees in the renovations of their bungalows, they had
to manage with such a megre amount, only because Soniaji
pleaded for thrifting.
Again a news channel let out a secret. One important
minister was in Soniaji's 'good book'. That minister phoned
the above said ministers and advised them to vacate hotel-
suites immediately, to save their and the Government's
prestige.
There were praises for Soniaji everywhere. Ministers
are after all servants ! They did what Soniaji advised, but
the news channels have to care for TRPs, no ? So again the
news channel discovered the minister concerned, phoned the
ministers from a five star hotel himself !
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 73 74 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
Why to talk of a minister only ? Every minister has to
arrange for meetings or seminars everyday. The ministers
have to arrange them in the five-star hotels only ! Well, see
the irony ! The minister who had to vacate his suite, that
Shashi Tharur had to arrange a meeting in the same hotel
next day ! As it is, the charges of a five-star hotel are not
much ! It only amounts one crore rupees per meeting. Suppose
15-20 meetings are held in a month, then the total charge
only comes to 15-20 crores and 250 crores in a year ! Well,
you may argue, Bapu ! that ministers' salaries are quite
negligent compared to these amounts ! The salary may be
15-20 thousand per month and 20% of that, only amounts
to 3-4 thousand rupees ! Are these MPs beggars ? They have
their status ! But what about the drama of 20% cut in the
salary ?
But Bapu ! One has to do such gimicks ! Why can not
you realise ! We have to give some solace to 78 crore people
who hardly earn 20 rupees per day ! See, Bapu ? There is
a breaking news on the channels ! There are 15-20 more
ministers who are staying in fivestar hotels still !
Well, I start remembering you, Bapu ! You are the only
person who is to be remembered !
Bapu ! We Have To Do Something New ForMaharastra's Election !
Bapu ! Elections are due in Maharastra again. All thechannels are busy in showing episodes of Rahulji's 'PM-in-making'. If Soniaji insists for thrifting, Rahulji also must beshown in some colour ! Usually Soniaji flies in the charteredjet-plane, but as the elections are due in Maharastra, shetravelled in the common class of routine flight. The news -channels were instructed to show the news with her photos. It was also necessary to highlight Rahulji's jounrney of thetrain in second class ! Again it was imperative to show howpeople were excited seeing Rahulji in a local train ! But somepeople from Ludhiana spoiled the broth. They placed bighoardings of 'Welcome Rahulji' everywhere in Ludhiana atthe cost of lacs of rupees ! Thus there was 'Rahulji' ! 'Rahulji'everywhere in the city !
Well, one has to highlight Rahulji's thrifting by suchhoardings costing lacs of rupees. Again there was someuproar by the people who were put in the difficulties by thesecurity-commandos of Rahulji while he was returning toDelhi ! Though it was fair that the news channels did notcover-up such scenes created by some jealous people ! Newschannels have their needs !
Bapu ! Manmohansing remembered you at the flag-hoisting ceremony at the Red Fort. Bapu ! How you wouldhave reacted about Soniaji's campaign of 20% cut in thesalaries of MPs ? I know, you had protested against suchsugar-coated deceits before.
In the year 1903, it was necessary to send labourers toTranswal. Lord Curzen, the then Viceroy, showing sympathy
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 75 76 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
towards the labourers of India, said that the Government willhave to behave fairly with the labourers residing permanentlyat Transwal and also with the new labourers that are coming. They should be paid better salaries but they will have toreturn to India, when the contract ends. Actually Whites inTranswal were treating Indians as 'Coolies', whether theywere pleaders or doctors. Whites believed Indians asuntouchables.
Though you liked Lord Curzen's generosity towards
Indians but you protested against sending them to India at
the end of the contract, because you believed that Indian
labourers had every right to stay at Transwal as the Whites
had, because they were also British nationals. You considered
Lord Curzen's plea deceitful.
So you would have warned Soniaji that this 20% cut
is deceitful when ministers and MPs live in big bungalows
and spend crores of rupees. It is also like cheating public.
It is like one type of violence that tries to obliterate truth also.
MPs have millions of rupees, Why they are not giving
20% of their wealth ? Bapu ! You would have said that it
is shameful on their part for creating such drama, when 50
crores of people hardly get one time meal and other 55 crores
of people toil hard to get two times meals. You would have
added saying 'My life is my message', that to live lives of
toiling peasents, to live in smaller houses, to remove those
army of security commandos and to serve people living like
them. Bapu ! Tears come in my eyes when I hear you saying
thus and disdainfully-strike my forehead twice with my hand.
Bapu ! See Through Sonia Madam's
Thrifting Campaign
Bapu ! I have never travelled by plane in my whole life.
Only I have seen planes on T. V. channels. Recently when
I saw photographs of Soniaji's travelling by economy class,
then only I could know about interior accomodations of a
plane ! A journalist M. J. Akber said that only 2% of the
population of India travel by planes. I am included in the
remaining 98% of the people who do not travel by plane and
so I am obliged to a Gujarati daily news-paper for giving me
such a deep knowledge of travelling by planes.
Bapu ! So different parties of this country kept mum!
They had nothing to say. Once in Indiraji's regime, when
there was hike in petrol-prices, Indiraji reached the parliament
house in a horse-cart. The very next day Bajpaiji went in a
bullock-cart making a big fiasco of Indiraji. And Indiraji
almost forgot about horse-cart !
Here I represent a true story of the show of thrifting by
Soniaji with the courtesy of the news-paper.When Soniaji started her journey to Mumbai from Delhi
in the economy class, two front lines were blocked. Sheselected 3-A seat, because there was a big space where onecould stretch feet. 3-B, C, D, E seats were kept vacant dueto security reasons. In seat 3-F defence minister A. K. Antonywas seated. Six seats behind Soniaji were reserved for securitystaff. It meant that 10 seats were reserved for Soniaji's caravan. These seats could be given to the travellers who could notafford to travel in business class. After all this, Soniaji saved10,000 Rs. Again add ticket-charges of those vacant seats
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 77 78 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
and we find deficit. Moreover, the expense of one flightpreceding this, which was for the car and other materials ofthe party-president, was extra.
Same was the case with Rahulji's train-travelling ofLudhiana. The general public had to suffer hardh- ships dueto strong security. Rahul Gandhi saved rupees 10,445 net.A question arises : Who is benefitted ? Again what aboutthrifting when we add ticket-charges of the vacant seats andthose of security guards ?
Bapu ! Now Priyankaji also spends her own money !See, how some jealous persons say about it ? Listen to whata weekly says about Priyankaji.
What a bungalow to own ? We must own such abungalow, otherwise there is no meaning in having abungalow!
A dream-house... we want a house in the capital ofHimachal Pradesh - Simla, facing a beautiful valley, an eyefulscenery around, icy mountains before in every season andrivulets flowing at the feet of those mountains and havingcool air. Who does not want such a house ?
Priyanka, daughter of Soniaji and sister of Rahulji boughtsuch a bungalow at Chharabada on the hills of Mashovara, some 12 Kms away from Simla. This is a dreamhouse ofRobert Wadra's family ! Renovation is going on since oneyear. Wadra couple supervises it.
Renovation and interior decoration will be over in abouta year, it is said. House warming ceremony with Vastu Poojanwill be held in the coming a Navratri Festivals. The bungalowis being constructed in the style of bungalows of hillstations. Its ceiling is of slate stones. There is minimum use of cementand steel. There are about 12-14 rooms in this two-storeyedbuilding. There are Cherry-trees and Apple trees in the opencompound in the front of the house. The hills of Tibet areseen from here.
Bapu ! Our people have become eunuchs ! May be, printmedia prints such news, but are all newschannels ennuchs? All the while, they are busy in showing different episodesof Sonia, Rahul and Priyanka,
Bapu ! Again I have to remember you. It so happens
that this year we had heavy rains and the ceiling of Wadra-
house came down ! The ceiling was wooden. Niraj Sainy was
supervising the renovations. He said that now we have to
construct new ceiling of steel. For that one Kohilika Kohli
- an architect was given this task. Now the news-paper has
described the interior designs of the cottage.
This cottage is constructed in about three and a half
acres of land. There is an apple-yard in the front. This cottage
is being constructed between the president-residence Retreat
and Biled Flower Hall in the open land. Who owned that land
was not described in the news-paper. It was not known
whether it was reserved land. No details of the price of the
land, how much expense of the renovation and construction
was done, are given.
Bapu ! Suddenly I am day-dreaming ! I am sitting in
such a beautiful bungalow with such vast land. I see scenes
of sun-rising in the mornings and loiter in the terrace at night,
looking at the moon in the brighter half and starry skies in
the darker half and setting sun behind the hills.
Aah ! What a dream ? I am filled and erupted with
exaltations !
And then you were remembered ! My mood went off!

Bapu ! Travelling Of Shashi Tharoor With
'Holy Cows' In The Cattle Class, In The
Name Of Thrifting
Bapu ! The ministers of the five-star culture who always
used chartered planes, are now travelling in an economy
class with the camera men and news-channel people and are
having their photographs Published. Their media-managers
have already instucted all news-channels to highlight these
episodes. We see chains of episodes daily. And Bapu ! That
Shashi Tharoor went in a hotel and had a lunch. You know,
Bapu ! These T.V. channel-persons are omnipresent. They
immediately flashed their guns and the praises were bestowed
on him with his photographs everywhere. Then T.V. people
brought out what he said about the travelling in the economy
class of the plane. He used the word 'Cattle-class'. He declared
that now on, he will travel in the cattle class with holy cows.
We can follow what he meant by 'holy cows'. So Bapu ! Our
Shashi Tharoor is ashamed of travelling with the 'Poor' People,
whose milk (money) he uses !
And Bapu ! Obama Culture has strongly established in
India now. In America, a crowd who was opposing
unnecessary expenses of the government, called Obama,
Hitlar and Stalin. There were 35 journalists who were on the
pay-roll of the White House, at President Nixon's time. I do
not know the actual number just now. But these people know
very well how to deceive the 'holy cows' !
Bapu ! One friend of a MP just now had 'breaking news'.
He said that these MPs do not fight elections for megre
salary. Any candidate is prepared to give his full salary in
the thrift-campaign, if he is given the ticket. He is even
prepared to give 5-10 'Khokha' (Crores) in order to get
ticket.Ö 20% cut is nothing. Do you think, candidates spent
10-15 crores in the elections, just to get this pay ? That is
not equal to their sundry expense even ! They are prepared
to give their full pay in campaign, only if they are allotted
tickets. Bapu ! You will again remind us that once you
warned that people would thrash such leaders, but Bapu !
Do you think, they are afraid of your threats ?
Ö It is said that candidates are prepared to give 5-10 crores
just to get tickets of municipal corporation or district panchayats.
One should be prepared to give 5 crores to the middleman to fight
elections of L.A. At the higher level, it has reached upto 15-20
crores. And what about parliamentary elections ? Please do not
think of fighting, unless you have 200-500 crores in your bank-
account !

Bapu ! Cases Of Mass-suicide Of Whole
Family Are On The Rise In The Country !
Bapu ! That day in my office, there was an angry debate
on the matter of thrifting in the elections. Some angry young
men were there, as Rahulji wanted in the politics. There was
an uproar in the office. Then in the adjoining room, I saw
a youth of about 30 years talking to Rekhaben, our office-
bearer. The arguments were so hot in the office, that I did
not take any notice of that youth. He was entreating pitifully
to Rekhaben, but I could not hear what he was saying.
When the debate ended and all were gone, I asked
Rekhaben about that youth. She told me that the poor man
wanted any kind of employment, however small, because he
was in great need. So he was entreating. He had been to our
branch at Chautapul also in the search of employment.
Naturally, we could not offer him any job. He had gone
away; but I was so hurt that I began to worry about him. Only
if I could pacify him with some words and help ! I had heard
about needy unemployed youths who finally commit suicide
with their family !
I started reading about suicide cases in the news-paper.
I do not know, whether that man committed suicide or not;
but Bapu ! I remember your 'Hind Swaraj' and strike my
forehead with regret. How helpless eunuch I am !
Bapu ! Let me talk about a scene I saw today morning.
I was waiting for my driver Hasmukhbhai. There was a big
traffic rush on the road. I saw one poor man wearing a torn
shirt and Pyjama. He was looking at something lying on the
road very attentively. Vehicles were rushing to and fro. He
waited for about five minutes to clear the road. As the road
was clear, he rushed and took a red ball-pen in his hand. As
he was passing by me, I said, 'It is used ball-pen. It is of no
use to you !'
He replied very meakly, 'I know, Sir ! But for my grand-
son, it is a novelty. He will play with it !'
Bapu ! I see several such scenes daily. If I go on writing
about them, they may cover about 100 books like your 'Hind
Swaraj.' I only dedicate that used red ball-pen to the 12 crore
new borns in the last year, only for their play, and remembering
our foreign-ministers R. Krishna and Shashi Tharur.
Bapu ! I am an eunuch ! I can not bear this. So I request
you remembering you that Bapu ! Please, take birth again,
come, come and appear again for the sake of 125 crore
Indians !
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 83 84 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
Bapu ! Please, Look At These Children
Who Collect Rubbish
That evening I was going to my farm-house in the car.
I had some work for Subodhbhai, who was living nearby that
road. As I opened my car-door, I saw a girl 9-10 years old
taking away 2-3 Carton-boxes from the heap of rubbish and
gathered some pieces of card-board. She concealed them
somewhere and again started deposing the rubbish.
I was amused with the girl. She was like a doll wearing
dirty petticot and a torn dirty top. She looked so familiar to
me.
Some other day, when I was passing through that road,
I again saw that familiar figure... that girl... who was deposing
rubbish...'
Yes ! She was there !
Now she was busy with two three baskets full of rubhish.
She was as if sieving or sifting the heap as I used to sift my
wheat-heaps in my farm. There were some broken toys, one
compass-box, a torn chappal and a small comb near the
baskets ! Yes, I clearly saw all things, She was just sitting
near me, deposing the rubbish with her dirty hands, rubbing
them again and again with her dirty peticott. Her hair came
on her face as the wind blew. She would put them on the
forehead. Her nose was running and she was trying to remove
mucus from her nose. I could not bear to see her.
As I opened the door and just to sit in the car, to go
away, I heard a policeman threatening her, 'Hey... don't remove
rubbish, go away !'
The poor girl started entreating, 'Yes, Dada !' I'm putting
them again...' She started throwing all things she gathered
in the rubbish heap.
Somehow, the policeman was sympathetic. He went
away !
Bapu ! I see such scenes everyday and get angry towards
you towards all till my mind exhausts but - towards that
policeman Shit - I couldn't get him fixed; oh!
The other day, I was just watching daily hubbub in the
street, from my office-door, I saw two kids pulling a four-
wheeler hand barrow towards a scrap-godown. I immediately
recognised one of them - that girl ! Yes ! There she was !
A boy of hardly 8-9 years was with her ! They were pulling
the same lorry full of those cartons, card-boards and some
other scrap.
I was so excited ! I strongly wanted to talk to her.
And... I went to her, before she could reach to the
godown.
'Who is this boy ?' I asked her, as she recognised me.
'My brother...'
'Where do you live ?'
'In the slums near riverbank...'
'And is this lorry yours ?'
'No, it is rented... fifteen rupees for half a day !'
'What is your name ?'
'Shanti...'
'And your brother's ?'
'Laxman.'
There was a wheelbarrow of tea just opposite. I ordered
three cups of tea for us three. I offered them tea. Poor Kids!
They had no idea, nor they dreamt of such a thing. They were
hesitated. I took hold of Laxman's arm with warmth and gave
them the cups. Even then they hesitantly sipped tea looking
away from me.
This is the story of those two slumdwellers dirty kids!
They live in some small hut of ten by ten, just on theBapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 85 86 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
bank of River Tapti. The river is so near and the slumdwellers
earnestly want the river to come nearer in the monsoon. They
actually rejoice when river waters enter their huts. Only then
they get flood-relief and food packages to eat and some
money for building new huts and other utensils. They eagerly
wait for the floods and their huts to be drawn away.
But what about the remaining days ? Young parents go
in the quest of labour, every morning and sit in the labourers'
crowd. There Mukadams of the builders, plumberers, drainage
contractors house - repairing carpenters and masons, labour
contractors etc. come in search the labourers. Then there are
wranglings and hanglings between the contractors and the
labourers. Ultimately as luck will have it, labourers get work
for the day or not. If they get work, it's alright. But if they
do not get any work, they return to their huts. The husband
will have some 'desi' or 'bevda' and then will have a fight
with the wife and children.
And these two children ? Mostly they wander here and
there, near the heaps of rubbish, in search of some 'valuable'
scrap, collect them and bring them to their hut. They live
outside the hut, even at nights also.
'Why don't you lie in the hut ?'
'In the hut ? We have to keep our scrap there !'
'But why don't you keep it outside ?'
'How can we ? It can be stolen...'
Bapu ! I was so angry on you ! I do not tell lie. I could
not sleep that night. Those two innocent young kids ! Tears
run away... can not bear such agony !
Next day, as I began to write about it, I could not. Eyes
were filled with tears. Rekhaben asked what happened. I
could not answer. Throat was choking. Tears were flowing
on the paper. I went to the washroom to get fresh.
I could only say to Rekhaben that it was nothing. It was
my futile anger on Gandhiji. But he was not at fault. Who
could understand him ? Only I went on remembering him,
somewhat with anger, mostly with love.
But why should I remember him ? Only to pacify my
guilty conscience ? Or in a hope of correcting myself ? I do
not follow my mind properly but I am not able to forget.
Whenever I remember those kids, I always remember you!
It was all my fault. I say striking my head twice. Yes ! It was
all my fault ! Bapu had already said about them - the poors!Ö
Ö Bapu ! Now the municipal corporation has removed the
huts from the Tapi river-bank, which once was known as 'Bapunagar'
Slums. In their place, a fine river front is to be constructed. Theevenings of the well-to-do Surtis will be enjoyable. And those
scrap-collector kids are settled in some 5 kms far-away place.
Now they will come in the city to collect scrap, pushing and
pummeling in the bus.
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 87 88 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
Will That Scrap-collector Boy Die
As A Naxellite ?
An old man always passes through the street just opposite
my office. He comes on a wheel-barrow to sell scrap. His
twelve years old grand-son is always with him. They
sometimes pass time at a tea-barrow to have a 'Cutting' of
tea, then they go away in search of scrap. I used to see them
standing in the balcony of my office. The old man would
look at me occassionaly. I would give him a smile. He would
also acknowledge with a smile and then pass away.
One day I was in the balcony, I saw him passing. There
was alomost nothing in his wheel-barrow but some empty
bags. A thought passed through my mind : 'What he will get
today ?' Then I heard him muttering some thing. I looked
at him in interrogative mood.
He was saying, 'Sir... would you give me thirty rupees?'
Then stuttering he completed, 'I did not get anything
yesterday !'
Then looking at the boy, he added, 'This boy had a fever
yesterday. He is somewhat better, so I brought him with me.
If he remains well today, we will go somewhere to find scrap.
I am sure to find good scrap today so that I will be able to
return your money to-morrow.'
'Is he your son ?'
'No... he is my grand-son. My son was very wise. He
toiled much but could not do much and he died very young.
This boy's mother also died toiling hard. Only I am his father
and mother and his grand father too.'
How an old and illiterate man speak such a language?
But this is the gist of what he said. I put it in my language
here.
I did not know, what to say. This old gentlemen, tired
and defeated with the thrashings of poverty and who has no
hopes or help... there is nobody to give him some solace and
he is pulling on and on, without any lamenations. He has a
young grand-son... How can he afford to leave him ?
I have so many such friends, with whom I have travelled
in life and have found vast experiences as victuals. I feel
pangs of these friends. I put my hand in the pocket without
saying anything and found some 10-15 notes of ten rupees.
I gave him taking his hand without counting. For a second,
I thought, his eyes were moist. He only took out three notes
from the bunch and returned me the rest, saying, 'This sum
is enough. He is well to-day. Though I don't want to send
him all alone, but I will have to. If Deity Bhawani give
blessings, then I will be able to return your money to-morrow.'
The grand-son did not utter a word till now. He was
listening all the while, but I do not know, why suddenly he
blurted disdainfully, 'Come on, Grandpa, these people have
no time to hear your lamentations. Please, do not try to
debase yourself.' And then he forcibly pulled away the old
man and went away.
I was stunned - stunned in every core of my heart ! How
many insults this young boy must have suffered till now ?
How low and mean he must have felt, with the poverty ?
How much anger was he concealing in his heart? How much
malice was settled in his mind ? How much suffocation he
must have felt only because he was so young and so helpless?
A sharp tip pierced my heart and it started bleeding and
blood sprinted out. Will he become a naxellite ? Is a naxellite
taking birth in him ? Will he die of some policeman's bullet?
Will there be nobody to claim for his dead body ?
And then a sound was heard from the dark corner of
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 89 90 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
my mind, 'Shut up ! You scoundrel ! You are the real naxellite!
You are forcing him to be a naxellite ! You are getting fatter
and fatter by eating money of his toil. You bastard ! Son of
a beach !' I went on abusing myself, 'Yes ! You are the
culprit... by all means, you are !'
Bapu ! I can not sleep that whole night. I killed time
changing sides. Worthlessly I vomit out anger on you ! Why
should I lie ? I only remember you and abuse you ! How
many times I have done this ? Since so many years I put my
anger on you and so many times, you have pacified me ! You
had already noted down these things. Is it your fault that I
could not read and understand you ?
An Unhappy Mother Of A Happy Family
And Some Shoe-shine kids
There is ten minutes halt of Shatabdee train at Vadodara.
Time is about eleven and half hours a.m.
I am sitting near a window. It is A. C. bogie of Shatabdee.
Some intellectuals like me, who are sofisticated and rich and
who have remained aloof from the poors and have-nots, go
on lecturing, pitying poors and down-troddens, sitting in A.
C. Hall. For them a glass-window is a medium through
which they can watch out safely what is going on outside
the A.C. bogie.
From the glass-window I could see a ragged woman
sitted near the railway bridge. A boy of 5 years was trying
to make some noise via a balloon pipe. A piece of roti was
in the woman's hand. She was eating herself and feeding the
boy with a piece of roti and then offering water. The child
was usurping bread, gulping some water and then playing
with the balloon-pipe.
At that time, a somewhat rich couple with their
healthylooking four years old child, was passing. The rosy
child looked at the balloon-pipe of the poor ragged kid and
pointed out to his mother. Now the couple looked at the
mother and the child for a while. The young mother opened
her purse and brought out a five rupee coin. As she was about
to give it to that ragged mother, she as if she was stunned
and unable to say anything, vehemently denied to take
anything with her hand, but the couple went away throwing
the coin.
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 91 92 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
The mother was so angry. She threw away that coin and
some boys who were boot-polishing rushed to take away the
coin. The angry woman watched them without any feeling
with wide eyes.
I knew that woman was not a beggar. Ragged clothes
on the emaciated body, shrunken cheeks and the flat chest,
they all indicated her poverty, while her throwing away of
of the coin indicated her anger towards the couple. Her
anguish that emerged from the circumstances, showed that
she was from a somewhat happy family.
And those boys at an age, where all children start going
to schools were polishing shoes, only to earn something and
help their parents. They cannot be held legally but had they
been working in factories, then their master could be arrested
under the accusation of child labour ! Well, they are the
masters of their own business !
I remember one incidence some 30-35 years old. We
had bought one Germany made OMTU automatic printing
machine by the help of a big loan. In those days, in Surat,
there was scarcity of operating labourers of such machines.
Such operator would ask for anything he liked. Our labourer
was such a man. He would always try to show his importance
on others, as well as on me also. I would tolerate him. It is
in my nature to tolerate and instead, I would try to find the
reasons behind such behaviour. I would let go. My guilty
mind would warn me magnifying my faults. I tolerated him
for long.
One day suddenly he started blurting out against me,
without any reason. I could not bear it. It was enough for
him. I immediately dismissed him from the job, giving him
whatever he rightfully demanded.
I shut that machine. I could not help anything.
The machine-operator might have intimated the labour-
welfare office charging me for keeping a child-labourer. He
might have complained in the head-office at Amdavad.
A senior officer from Amdavad came to my office and
said, 'There is an application against you. You have kept a
labourer under the age of 16. Call all your labourers.'
Well, the said labourer was the son of our trusted old
labourer Chhaganbhai. Chhaganbhai was very honest and
hardworking. It so happened that he brought his teenager boy
with him oneday and requested me that his son did not go
to school and had become a vegabond. He could only persuade
him to learn composing and if I permitted, he would teach
his son the job of composing. Chhaganbhai was a good
composer himself and I thought that of an honest and
hardworking composer like Chhaganbhai could teach his son
his art then it was well and good, so I gave him my permission.
The boy started coming with his father and within one year,
he was a better composer than his father. I started giving him
some salary also, but it was true that he had not completed
16 years yet.
The officer was sympathetic. He heard everything
Chhaganbhai said. I only argued that legally it was true that
I was at fault, but such children who had passed the age for
going to school and had become vagabond, should we allow
them to become thieves, plunderers or a naxellite, by not
giving them any job ?
The officer was very considerate. He closed the file,
remarking that the boy had completed 18 years !
Bapu ! I was saved because of the considerate officer.
We know, nothing happens in such cases. A child-labourer
goes on working. Only the officers concerned get pocketful
money!
After 65 years of independence, we find shoe-shine
boys in any town or city. We saw in a film, how a shoe-shine
boy becomes a big 'Don'. You know everything, no, Bapu?
You had witnessed sitting up there. Tell me, don't you get
angry ? so many times, you urged to relieve yourself from
'Hind Swaraj' and 'My Experiments with Truth'. But what
happened ? Nothing !
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 93 94 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
All the while, that scene of an unhappy mother, her
anger and anguish, that child playing with balloon-pipe comes
to my mind and a question comes before me. Will that child
become a shoe-shine boy like those boys ? or... ? Whomsoever
I remember but you, Bapu ?
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 95 96 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
Bapu ! Your Thoreau will be found
everywhere in India
There is an 'Otta' of about 5 feet by three feet adjoining
the main entrance of our office 'Sahitya Sangam'. It is covered
by iron-fencing. This small area of about 15 feet having
glazed tiles is a locale of our story of to-day. Time is about
7 in the evening.
Our hero is about 40-45 years old man. His total property
include a ragged bag having a very few things of the least
necessities (Thoreau, Ruskin, Socrates or Gandhi would not
have dreamt of), an iron trunk, one plastic bucket and a
carpet. He would put his 'this much' property on the electric
meterbox and would loiter in abundonence in the opposite
open square.
I do not know his name.He never gives his name, though
I see him daily, living in our small 'Otta'. He has become my
friend. Our neighbours so many times shout on him, abuse
him but I never drove him out. Some people extrust him with
some smaller things to do and give him some money.
That evening, I was about to close my office and go
home, a woman came with a dish having two loaves and an
onion. She said, 'Sorry ! I'm late today. I have brought an
onion only.'
Without replying he took the dish, sat turning his back
on me and started eating. He finished both loaves with the
onion, drank some water, cleaned otta and put the rubbish
in a plastic bag.
People say that he is from some decent family. He does
not harm anybody. Might had been in some trouble but now
he lives immutably considering happiness and sorrow equal.
I do not know, why I remember Thoreau seeing him.
It was heard that Thoreau thought of living on a tree without
any clothes. Even Tolstoy died on a railway-station as a
stranger, being unhappy for others' sorrow. And this man...
lives whole day with the least necessities ! Thoreau, Ruskin
and Socrates only thought of other people's sorrows, but this
fellow is living like Thoreau. Though people so many times
help him and also complain against him. In India we find
crores of such Thoreau ! But we cannot call them Thoreaus,
only by living like Thoreau.
I have seen him in rainy season also. It rains cats and
dogs sometimes. Our building's first floor is protruding about
4-5 feet, so ordinary rains would not wet the 'Otta', but in
heavy rains and its splashing with strong winds 'Otta' becomes
full of waters. Thet day it was raining hard. I saw him soaked
with water. All the while, he was trying to remove waters
that were coming on the otta with long piece of mop. He
went on removing the water with the help of mop for long.
Then he was tired. He sat on his trunk. He was fully soaked.
Waters were dripping from his face and clothes. On and off,
he shook off waters from his hair, face and neck. He was
not tired of doing that but I got tired looking at him, thinking
how much he would pull on like this. It may rain continuosly
for a week also !
And I got tears in my eyes ! What can I do for him ?
O Thoreau ! O Tolstoy ! O Gandhi ! Where are you ?
Where have you hidden yourself ? I am a Surti (resident of
Surat city) But how can I abuse you all. I am unhappy ! I
know, I am also responsible for this. I rub my eyes and go
on abusing myself !
O Thoreau ! O Tolstoy ! O Gandhi ! You are all great
men. You all shed tears for poors and down-troddens all your
lives. Even today, Your followers like us, shed tears for them!
We remember them, living peacefully in our luxurious
bungalows ! We always say that it is Government's duty to
look after those people ! All the while, we remind our
governments of their duties, uttering the same words that you
said about poor people.
Then why should I strike my fore-head unnecessarily ?
Who criticises Thoreau or Tolstoy, or Ruskin, or Socrates and
other ?
Yes ! Only I criticise them ! All such great men thought
of poor people and then advised others to become like
themselves. They only thought and advised and did nothing
for them ! And poor became poorer !
Bapu ! Did you started movement for independence to
keep poors and down-troddens in their sorry-plight ? Bapu!
I complain to you with all my regards. Why did you not
arrange for a better system where everybody could get two
times bread ? Or two sets of cloths ? Or a small house ?
You are a great man, I know. but it ails me to say that
you did not try to do anything 'en masse' for those unfortunates.
You put forward ideals which were unattainable for illiterate,
simple and artless people, but did you not know how dirty
politicians would try to make fiasco of your thoughts ? When
I can not bear all these, I get angry on you all. Then I try
to find solace by remembering you, that one day, if not to-
day, then to-morrow, a second Gandhi will take birth in
Gujarat, as Sardar said. He will come again, definitely ! So
I go on remembering you !

Bapu ! You Will Not Remain Melting Like A
Wax When You See These
Bapu ! I am a farmer's son. I read about you 'Gram-
swaraj', so did not leave farming. Living in a city, I did not
forget my village. I bought a new farm where I planted somemango-trees. I have a farm-house there. I visit it often.
I always find so many dust-bins in between while passing
through. These dust-bins have taught me so many things. Ihave found so many friends there. They have made me
unhappy also.Bapu ! I have you and your son Harilal always sitting
in my mind. You have given me strength to know about
others' sorrows. My mother is also sitting in my mind as youand I believe the dust-bin as my mother.
My mother was illiterate like Kasturba. But she fed me
compassion with her milk, so whenever I see a dust-bin, Iremember my mother, Harilal and you !
A boy of about 10 years was seated near a dust-bin that
day. Children of slum-dwellers hardly go to schools. Theirparents taught them to rummage dust-bins as they are not
able to bring big scraps.
As the driver had to see someone, I got down near adust-bin and I saw that boy. He looked familiar, so I tried
to remember him. Then I remembered that I had met him
two, three months ago, with his grandfather. The boy thenbehaved rudely.
Whenever I come to my office at 9 o'clock in the morning,
I used to stand in the balcony for about few minutes. I watch
5-6 hand ricksha-lorries in the open squares, some people
standing before the shop of scrap and few women having
'cuttings' of tea. I always felt as if poverty of 62 years old
independent Bharat gathers before me beating her breasts in
mourning. shouting 'freedom', freedom'.
I had seen such scenes so many times. Yes ! I saw him
there !
The boy became restless and afraid and muttered slowly,
'Sir...'
I stood there without speaking and he was frightened
more. May be, he thought, I would ask him to return money.
'Sir ! Let me go. My grandpa must be waiting at home!
He is sick !'
Bapu ! He was looking so anxious and worried ! He
stood there entreating with joined hands. I could not bear it.
I was so angry with you and with myself too ! The boy
thought me a big man, so he was afraid and began entreating.
I stared at him. I do not know, how tears came out of
my eyes and fell on his hand. I could only say, 'Son !'
After a while, I asked him, 'How much you earn ?'
By the time, he was somewhat relieved. He replied, '15-
20 rupees ! Sometimes 30-40 !'
'Are you all alone in the house ? Your brother-sister ?
I have seen you near my office with your grand-father ! How
is he ? And where do you sell this scrap ?'
I went on asking eagerly, but how can a confused boy
reply ?
I pacified him putting my hand on his head. Slowly he
gathered courage. A boy, hungry of love, was offended by
the society, in such an early age. When he found some
sympathy and love in my behaviour, he started talking.
But how a boy with a vocabulary of a limited few words
can express himself! But I could follow his misery.
His parents went in search of work everyday in the
morning. They could earn somewhat but not everyday. Then
his father died. His mother followed, how they died ! He
does not know. The boy's age at that time was only five years.
Parents were gone. Only his grandfather was there to takeBapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 99 100 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
care of him. The grandfather was an honest man. He always
believed that one should not take anything unrightful and one
should not harm anybody. He advised that much to his son
and daughter-in-law and now he advised that to his grand-
son too. 'What if your parents gone ? I'm there to take care
of you It is said in our religious books that one should earn
bread with one's toil.' He took his grand-son with him to
collect scrap. The grand-son would rummage the heap of
rubbish and collect some useful scrap in a bag. They come
to the square opposite our office to sell.
Now the grand father was ill. He got old and did not
gather any money. He had to send his grand-son all alone.
All these years, he taught him what was useful and what not,
how to sell and get money out of such rubbish. Now he was
helpless. He had to lie down in his hut and the boy had to
search for scrap and to earn from it.
The boy did not realise what will happen when the
grand-father would die. How he will pull on in this dirty
world all alone without his grand-father ?
I do not tell a lie. I got angry at you also, but I also know
that you will melt like wax, when you know about such
things. You will go on fast for some days also so I keep my
anger with me only. I put my hand in the pocket and gave
him whatever I found and ran away quickly from him.
Bapu ! Today I saw a photograph of two five years old
children. They were drying some left out rice from the garbage.
So small children - hungry and starving - born of a 62 years
old freedom - they would dry that rice and would eat some
quantity of it daily to pull on for 2-3 days. I was shocked
to see that photograph and started dribling tears.
I am not able to forget those children. Somehow or
other, an incident came to my mind that I saw in Shivakashi,
some years ago.
Some of our printing was done at Shivakashi in those
days. I had to go there often. One evening, as I was loitering
in the market. I saw two persons with some hens and cocks.
They lied down motionless.Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 101 102 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
I was inquisitive. I asked, 'They do not run away ?'
'No', One of them replied without any emotion, 'We
have broken their legs !'
I was stunned. A customer came and selected one hen.
The man immediately cut hen's neck with a sharp knife and
put it in an aluminium dish. After some time he put it in
boiling water vessel. Afterwords he brought it out, cleaned
its feathers and legs, cut it into small pieces, put them in to
plastic bag, weighed them, calculated price, took the money
and handed the plastic bag to the customer !
Afterwords seeing the child-labourers of Shivakashi
and those two children drying rice, I felt that our so called
cultured society has broken feet of them. I will try to end
by reciting two poems I had written on the child-labourers
of Shivakashi.Ö
Bapu ! I come to original story. The little boy does not
go away from my mind. Whenever I remember him, I feel
a sharp pang in my heart. Did his grandfather die ? What
he would be doing alone ? I remember you and get angry
on you and on myself.

Do not calculate - No need for 50 sticks
Fill approximately - but hastily

But not exactly fifty ! Not at all.
I am tired of filling sticks

A Dirtful Woman And Her Ash-coloured Child
This is an incident about four months old.
All family-members do not allow me to go anywhere
without anybody's company. Not even to my office, which
is quite near to my residence. Our driver keeps holiday on
Sunday, so my son Janak does his duties to take me to the
office and back to home.
On one Sunday, Janak had gone somewhere and I had
to return home with Rekhabahen. As I was passing through
Jain Upashray, I saw a ragged woman with her six year old
boy walking slowly, ahead of me.
As I got near her, I could see her distinctly. She was
rather young. May be her complexion was fair but turned
to ash coloured due to rubbish and dirt. Her skin had become
harsh. She wore a dirty sari and worn out blouse. Her hair
was disorderly. She had torn chappals and had emaciated
wrists without bangles and hands with dirty nails.
Then I saw her son. He looked just like his mother -
a statue of poverty. His hair were thin and somewhat reddish-
coloured. I could see the reason behind it. Both may not be
getting enough food even, how one can have any hope of
getting nutritious food ? How hair can be lustrous, long and
black ?
He was wearing a too long dirty shirt almost reaching
to his knees, quite bigger than his body, as if getting it as
alms. I do not know whether he wore short trousers or not.
He had no chappals and was bare-footed. He was walking
slowly.
Whenever I see a child, I put my hand on its head
casually, whether the child is familiar or not. I put my hand
very lightly on his rather reddish coloured head, but with
affection. I smiled at him as he saw me. The child looked
at me with some enthusiasm and then turned his eyes from
me. The matter ended there.
But no ! Matter did not end there. That was only a
beginning.
After about a month I again met them. I was returning
home with Rekhabahen passing through the same place,
when I heard someone calling me...
'Bhai... ?'
I looked at her. She was with her child.
I waited for a while. They came near me.
I looked interrogatively at her. She was silent for a
while. May be she was perplexed whether to talk to me or
how to start talking.
Then she said, 'Bhaisaheb !... On that day, you lovingly
put your hand on my child, no ?'
'Ya... but... ?
'No... No ! I liked that very much ! For years, nobody
looked at my boy with such an affection !'
I did not know, what to say. I only smiled.
'Bhaisaheb ! Once he was such a darling. Almost
everybody kept him in his hands. How he can realise ? How
he can remember ? How old was he !'
I felt, I must say something.
'You see, bahen ! Circumstances never remain the same.
They change !'
'That I know, bhai ! But I never dreamt remain they
would be so worst !'
'Where are you from ?'
'Now it doesn't matter ! Say... from nearby village !'
'Where do you live ?'
'Wherever He wishes !' She looked at the skies.
'Still... ?'
'No permanent place to live/ It changes. Just now I live
on the footpaths opposite railway station.'
'What about bathing-washing ?'
'Bathing ? How is it possible daily ? Only my child may
go to defecate anywhere, I have to clean... For me... Let us
stop that matter...'
'Do you pull on all alone... ?'
'I had a big family once - husband, his brothers - his
parents... now, everybody gone !'
'What happened ?'
And in its reply, I found a tragic story.
An educated somewhat higher-cast-family. A happy,
united family. In very short period, all three male members
- including her husband died. Her parents also went away.
Brothers of her father took hold of her parent's house and
her relations with them ended. Her only son and two sons
of her brothers-in-law died in a year. There was nobody to
earn. The wife of the eldest brother of her husbund also died
and young widowed wife of the younger brother of her
husbund ran away with someone. Now only her grand-son
of about two years remained alive. There was nobody to look
after him. She could not pull on in the village. She had to
leave her house and came to Surat with the grand-son. There
was nobody to protect her from so many hardships and
haressments. A lonely woman has to suffer every kind of
haressments in a city. Somehow, she was pulling on. Bapu!
This is the condition of an Indian woman after 62 years of
independence in India. What can I do except to remember
you and your 'Hind Swaraj' ?
I was ashamed of myself.
As we departed with them, Rekhabahen told me that the
Jain residents of this area give prepared food to beggers
daily. One of them had given some land with a big compound
free for such purpose. They daily feed the beggars with
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 105 106 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
necessary utensils and give them some packets for the family-
members who cannot come here. Rekhabahen added that
such other 14 Jain dining projects run in the city.
On one side, big industrialists and other celebrities
collect crores of rupees for themselves eating dishes worth
one to five thousand rupees- and on the other side such
beggars like this woman beg for one-time meal. It is a
tragedy that we have to maintain such 15 institutions in this
city to feed beggers after 62 years of freedom.
Bapu ! Tell, me, why one should remember you and
your 'Hind-Swaraj' ?
Bapu ! Hear The Story Of Seven Lac
Down-troddens Who Carry Baskets Of
Excreta On Their Heads
Bapu ! You believed that to find solutions of the
unhappiness of the have-nots and down-troddens (whom you
called Daridra-Narayan, the Gods of poverty) is the real quest
of truth for you. The quest of truth is like praying God, Sixty-
two years have passed since your death and still those
innumerable dalits carry baskets of excreta of lacs and crores
of people, on their heads!
One special incident reminded me of that matter. 7-8
years ago, one day I was going home from my office, I saw
an old woman bent at waist walking slowly with the help of
a stick. As she approached me, she stood for a while and
looking at me, squeezed her eyes and muttered, 'Nanubai...?'
'Sorry ! I don't recognize you !'
'How can you, after so many years ?'
I tried to remember.
'You were young then ! You have not changed much!'
Again I could not remember her.
'I used to come to clean your toilet, remember ? You
always talked to me for at least few minutes. You supplied
study-books to my son and gave tuition-fees also !'
Now I could remember her. Yes ! She was the woman
who cleaned our toilet for years. I used to talk to her often.
In those days, people of higher communities would not like
to talk to such dalits. (Harijans - people of God). She always
felt happy when I talked to her. I did not remember of helpingBapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 107 108 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
her son with study-books or tuition-fees. Still I liked to talk
to her.
I asked, 'What are doing now ?'
'What should I do ? Living with this stick !'
'Your son studied, how much ?'
'Not much ! But he is happy !'
'And your grand-children ? They must be studying ?'
'How that is possible in such dearness ?'
I kept mum. She added, 'Gandhi-bapu was so kind. Only
because of him, my son is able to find labour-work in a road-
construction company. My daughter-in-law goes for toilet-
cleaning. You know, we carried excreta-baskets all our lives;
but we are now free from doing that, because of Gandhibapu!'
I remembered. In those days, even in the city like Surat,
toilets were kept in the open backyards behind. Dalits used
to clean away toilets through the narrow back-lanes and
remove excreta by baskets on head. If there were no back-
lane, then toilets were kept on the front otta. Mostly dalit-
women used to clean the toilets and carried away excreta of
the urban-people and threw it in a tank over a bullock-cart.
Then such tanks were carried to an open land near Rander,
(I didn't know, where). Then under-ground gutters were
constructed in the city and those women started cleaning
W.C.S, the flush-toilets. They were happy that they had not
to carry excreta-baskets now. Poor Harijans believed that
was possible due to Gandhi-bapu!
Now I found out that still in this country, seven lacs of
dalits carry excreta on their heads, even today !
I remembered an other such dalit woman. I was residing
in Nani Chhipwad - Balaji road, then. There the toilet was
on the front otta. I often saw the woman cleaning the toilet
and smiled at her. She would be happy. We would exchange
routine 'how are you ?'
While talking with the old woman, I mused whether
that woman was happy in cleaning toilets, rather than to carry
excreta-baskets ? Whether she owed it to Gandhi-bapu ? Was
she content with that much happiness ?
I remember, so many times my mother would say, when
I argued about anything with her, 'Don't you be so wise ! Your
excreta still smells in my nails !'
I knew, she refered such things only with love. The
smell of an excreta in mothers' nails is a symbol of mother's
love.
The old woman before me was also a mother. She must
have a smell of her son's excreta in her nails but the smell
of the excretas of the whole town had overpowered it. And
still we have seven lacs of such mothers in our country !
Bapu ! your congress-men had stolen that smell from
lacs of mother's nails !
'Bahen ! Let study your grand-children ! One of them
can become prime-minister !'
'How is it possible ? We don't have 25 thousand rupees?'
'Bahen ! 25 thousand won't do now, not even 25 lacs!
Even 200-500 crores are not enough !'
'It's all the same ! Whether thousands - lacs or crores!'
Bapu ! These people are content with getting two times
bread. They are happy because they have not to carry excreta-
baskets ! And we have not taught them how to calculate
thousands or crores ! We have turned them in the vote-banks.
Better if a second Gandhi comes !
'Bahen ! Teach your grand-children. I will give their fees
or books !'
'No, Nanubhai ! We are happy in Gandhi-bapu's rule.
And what one has to do except labour, even after learning?'
The woman left me with so many questions. She was
younger to me - bent at the waist ! We had not given her
any kind of medicines, vitamins or even nourishing food !
Still she is happy only because she had not to carry those
baskets !
Bapu ! I remember those seven lac dalits ! They are still
punished in carrying excreta baskets ! Bapu ! Your Your
dreams are shattered ! Everything finished !
I feel ashamed in remembering you, Bapu !

A Story Of A 26-18-24 Figured Woman And Her
Chappal And A Cobbler Near Hitubhai's Mension
Bapu ! I do not know why, I remember you as the nightcomes ! This incident happened few days ago.
Janakbhai was not present to take me home. I was goinghome with Rekhaben, when a ragged young woman hurriedlypassed me. I saw a pair of plastic chappals in one of herhands which were automatically moving fast. I could not seeface but she looked like Karina Kapoor from her back.
Do you know Karina ?Let me tell you. I know four generations of Kapoor
family. It was said that there were only two wellknownfamilies in India. One was Nehru family and the other oneKapoor family. Nehru family rules over India and Kapoorfamily acts in films. Nehru family gives birth to prime-ministers and Kapoor family to filmi heroes. Kapoor familywas considered cultured. Family-men believed that film-industry was not good for women folk, so its brides anddaughters never acted in the films.
But time changed afterwards. There was no morePrithviraj Kapoor - a master of dramatic arts or no more'Joker' Raj Kapoor. Now, the granddaughters of Raj Kapoor- Karishma and Karina became successful film-heroins.
This Karina Kapoor wanted to have a 'Zero figure'. Youwill ask : what is this 'Zero figure' ? Then listen !
For a young woman, some vital statistical figures of
different parts of her body are considered ideal for beauty
- say 36 inches for breasts, 24 inches for waist and again 36
inches for pelvis. Someone must have told Karina that figure
of 24 inches for waist is excessive and it must be only 20
inches or less.
Now figure of 20 inches is called 'Zero figure', so Karina
started dieting. Some times she would have lemon-juice
only. It was said that due to weakness owing to this crooze,
she fell down during a film-shooting.
And Bapu ! What to talk about the beauty-contests ?
You could never see a crowd of six-seven young women
who wear bikinies of almost 2" wide, about 4" below the
navel and rush to embracs a big hero as if honey-bees cling
to a honey-comb. May be you could not see the episode of
'Open button' of an actor on T. V. which was so vulgar that
any wise man would not have tolerated. In an open public
show, one actor asked his wife to open buttons of his
pantalloons and she started opening buttons as she might be
doing in their bedroom. With that actor got so much excited
that he started moving his loins in an inter-course fashion.
Crores of people saw that 'bedroom scene' with their young
children ! And on the very next day our president awarded
'Padmabhushan' to him in the presence of vast public !
Bapu ! I do not describe this to entertain people but if
I do not mention about it, then my heart would burn.
Bapu ! We have to ponder over so many such things
for the health of our 'Swaraj'. We have to find their causes
and their solutions, otherwise, these vulgar and runaway
celebrities are on the verge of distrusting our democracy. We
will have to get full informations about such scenes, if we
want to find a new and seperate ruling system other than the
parliamentory democracy. We have to debate about their
causes, their results and their solutions. We can not afford
to neglect them. We have to go deep into them. It will help,
if we only consider them as business of flesh.
But let us talk about that woman, whom I saw hurriedly
walking. When I looked her from her back, she seemed as
a woman of double zero figure. She was not even 26-18-26.
But was it possible ? She almost looked as a skeleton without
any flesh !
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 111 112 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
Again I saw her the next day. Again she was holding
chappals in her hand and almost running. It was beyond my
understanding, why she was holding chappals in her hand.
I stopped her and eagerly asked, 'Bahen ! Can I ask you
one question ?'
'What ?'
'Yesterday also you were running bare- footed, holding
chappals in hand.'
'So what ?'
'Why don't you wear them ?'
'Yes ! Because chappals were splitted yesterday ! They
were worn out. Bought from Saturday bazzar ! How much
they can pull on ?'
Bapu ! You will ask about the Saturday bazzar ! This
kind of bazzar is a gift from 65 years old freedom. Bapu !
In this city of Surat, there is a big class of poor people who
get two-time bread by collecting and selling scrap only.
These scrap-collectors collect ragged cloths, broken furnitures,
chappals - boots etc. and sell them to scrap-merchants who
in turn repair them, colour them and sell them to needy poor
at a very low price, in the fair that is held on the bank of
river Tapti every Saturday. This Saturday-bazaar is a big help
for 20-25 lacs of people living in slums or in ordinary houses.
Such bazaars are held in Gujarat only. In Ahmadavad, it is
held on every Friday. In these aboriginal areas, scrap-
merchants gather at a village in a centre between 7-8 villages
on any one day every week. There are seven such areas,
where such bazaars are held alternately on one perticular day.
Aboriginals of Dharampur, Vansada, Dangs and Rajpipla are
seen in loin-cloths still today. About one crore people only
live with the help of such bazaars. Gujarat is considered
somewhat happier state than others. Hardships of the poors
are less here, but it is very difficult to think about the poor
people outside Gujarat.
'Jay 'Hind-Swaraj-', Bapu !'
Let us return to that woman.
She works as a house-maid in 3-4 families. 4-5 persons
are dependent on her income. Husband is a drunkard - does
not do anything. He will remain at home whole day drinking.
At night he would repeatedly torment her sexually. It is her
duty to feed him, his children and his parents ! She is one
of those 50 crores of people of India, who get hardly one time
bread. Her chappals were broken. There was no money to
buy a new one (repaired - of course) from the Saturday
bazaar.
'There is a cobbler beside Hitubhai's mension. He charges
25 paise for a stitch. Yesterday I had no money, so I had to
return bare-footed. Today I have got 25 paise, So I will get
them repaired.'
Bapu ! This Hitubhai means our former chief-minister
of Gujarat. He was your staunch supporter. He was one of
the cleanest Ghandhians. His father Kanjibhai was a zamindar
(land-lord) of Masma village, near to my village. He gave
away his fertile land in tenancy-act. He had a two storeied
building just opposite my residence. Our ex-prime minister
Morarjibhai would stay in this mension, whenever he came
to Surat. Kanjibhai's mension was the head-office of the
congress-men. Sudhirbhai, his son-in-law, was my friend.
His daughter, grand-daughter of Kanjibhai, Anjani whom I
called 'Anju' was very joyful and lively. Hitubhai, Kanjibhai's
son became CM of Gujarat afterwards. When the Congress
was divided, he went with Indiraji.
He had no issue. He wanted to give his mension to any
institution of women-welfare activities. Saryuben, wife of
former home-minister Popatbhai Vyas bought it for Akhil
Hind Mahila Parishad.
Let me return to that shoe-maker. This cobbler Manilal
Tukaram was a Maharashtrian. He used to sit just adjoining
Hitubhai's mension since many years. He lived in Surat since
two generations. He would repair boots and chappals charging
almost nothing. In 20-25 paise, he would mend chappals.
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 113 114 / Bapu ! Then, You Were RememberedB.T.Y.R. 8
Since last 15 years, I saw him mending boots and chappals.
Before him, his maternal uncle used to sit there. See the
irony! A shoe-maker sitting beside Kanjibhai's mension
remained as he was before so many years, when son of
Kanjibhai became chief-minister ! The season of fruit-bearing
has started in full swing of 65 years old freedom!
I find so many foot-path cobblers in Surat.
In june 2010, I found that the shoe-maker was not there!
Why is he not seen ? What happened to him ? To whom can
I ask ? Some building construction materials were there !
I could not find him for so many days !
Well, One day I saw him seated opposite Hitubhai's
mension.
It was raining hard. He was seated under a plastic
canopy. He was shivering in another plastic cover. I thought
about the rains. It was going to rain heavy for alomost a
month. What would he do ?
But he could pull on. Now the building construction
was over. He could move to his original place. I was happy.
He also must be happy. How we are contended with small
happinesses ?Ö
I was so interested in such footpath-shoemakers, that
I started looking about such shoe-makers seated on the
different foot-paths, I could find almost ten. Now Suart is
a big city ! There may be so many cobblers in the city -
symbols of our freedom !
I cannot refrain from describing one such shoe-maker's
tragedy. It hurts me and tears come out.
Ö I found that shoe-maker till Diwali of 2011. Afterwards
he was not found. I inquire after every few days. I do not know
what happened to him. Is he ill ? Or returned to his village ? I
remember him often. I have his photograph with me.
I had never seen him, but read about his tragic death
in a newspaper one morning. We have six-lane asfalt-roads
now, with dividers in the middle.
This show-maker used to sit on a side-footpath whole
day and tried to get some money to feed his family.
One day a very young boy was driving a car speedily.
He tried to take sharp turn to an adjoining road. The car was
bumped with the divider and rushed towards that poor man
and crushed him. He was killed on the spot.
The shoe-maker was relieved of so many sufferings, but
what about his family ? His children ? The questions go on
tormenting me. Tears come out as I remember him.
Bapu ! I only want to say that your 'Hind - Swaraj' has
failed - failed totally. I remember you in that context. Bapu!
I loved you with my heart. To whom else can I complain ?
To whom else can I talk to ? And who else will give me their
solutions ?

That Bare-footed child : Will His Child
Also Remain Bare-footed Thus ?
I am standing in the balcony of my office 'Sahitya
Sangam'. Time 7 o'clock in the evening. Children are used
to play on the otta just in front of office. These joyfully
playing children are my friends. As I leave my office, they
gather around me, shout 'Dada', 'Dada', laugh and play.
Today, I did not find any child playing there. Instead,
a couple was seated with a child about 7 years old. They had
a big bundle of jute cloth and a white hemp bag.
The woman opened a small packet. The child was looking
eagerly. It consisted 'Bhoosu' (a parched dry eatable, which
people of Surat city like very much.) The woman produced
the open packet before the child who took handfull of eatable
and put it in the mouth. The woman offered it to her husband,
who as if wanted everything in the packet, but hesitantly took
some of the eatable. The woman took some herself. Again
she oftered to the child, to the husband, taking some herself.
This was their 'Snack' in a sense! They finished it with
one plastic bottleful of water. Then they rested. The child was
also relaxed. After about ten minutes the man opened the big
jute-bundle and brought out some used plastic bottles, small
wooden pieces, small glass-bottles, plastic boxes, torn
chappals, some broken toys etc., one by one the woman
started sorting out them in different catagories. The child was
watching attentively. The woman seprated a broken toy, one
rubber ball and toy-wristwatch from the lot and gave
them to the child who accepted them happily.
The woman tied down all small heaps into different
smaller bags and put them in a big bag. The man took out
two 'bidis'. He offered one to his wife and took one himself.
He lighted them and started taking puffs. Then they slowly
went away taking big bag and bundle with the child. The
woman was wearing torn plastic chappals, which were not
fully comfortable so she was dragging her feet. She had a
dirty ragged sari. The man had torn sandles in his feet. He
was wearing a dirty pyjama and a dirty shirt. The boy was
in short dirty pants, no shirt and was bare-footed.
This scene was repeated continusly for a whole week.
I saw that family daily coming in the evening. Suddenly they
stopped coming. I thought, they must have collected enough
scrap to sell and must have gone to Saturday bazaar to buy
some ragged clothes and some house-hold necessities.
Bapu ! Our freedom will be 75 years old when that bare
footed child will grow and become a young man. Will he
remain bare-footed all his life ? Will he come to this office-
door with his family as his parents ? Will he be selling scrap?
And what about his grand-children ? Will his coming
generations remain as he is to-day ? Will this chain of his
family go on even when our freedom will be 150 or 200 years
old ?
Bapu ! I get angry on myself. I abuse myself and strike
my forehead. I like to shout at you : Bapu ! We are in such
a sorryplight only because of you ! But I am angry on myself.
I am an eunuch ! I am so helpless.
I remember three eunuchs who visited my residence.
They might not have found anybody, so wrote down their
names on the wall with their visiting date.
Dated 1st may 2010.

dew for - one new born -
i.e.; one claim remaining. They again visited next month...
and again next month. We have no good opinion about
eunuchs. They could have forcibly come to the first floor,
if they wanted. They could have demanded a big amount on
the birth of my grand-grand-child. We have dis-honoured
eunuchs. We do not understand their sensitivity and love. We
are devoid of sensitivity, compassion and love.
I could enter in the mind of one of the eunuchs who
were in search of customers in the night in Mumbai's Bazargate
street. They also craved for love. They had sensitivity and
compassion also.
Those three eunuches might have come again to claim
their due, I do not know; but here, I want to quote my poem:
'Eunuch' to claim their due,Ö written some 40 years ago. I
awe much to eunuchs.
'The eunuch'ÖMy poems may get destroyed,
Whom I presented in 'Mushairas'
Since 50 years !
My feeble fictions
Who got various Government prices
Since 50 years
May destroy.
My virtue-less lessons
That are taught in colleges
Since 50 years
May destroy
My hollow spineless lectures
That are given without fail
Since 50 years
May destroy.
My nonsense words
That are vomitted out without
control
Since 50 years
May destroy
I am tired now before that eunuch
Gets tired, clapping on and on
Residing in my body
Since Mid-night of 15th

Love, Courtship And Coitus Of
Three Couples And Witnessing Peers!
Date 5th April 2010, Monday. Going to Ahmedabad by
Shatabdi express train from Surat. Was looking towards the
skies through glass-window. The train was running. I saw
glimpses of burnt forest babool trees and about ten women
around them, gathering their branches and piling them. The
train moved on. I saw another group of young girls, few of
them quite teenagers, pale and lean, quite lustreless. All were
gathering branches of babools - perhaps they all were from
a nearby village. May be they had only option of earning by
selling timber of fire-wood. They all must have their families
to maintain. They would carry those bundles of sticks on
their heads and would try to sell in some nearby town.
I felt very much looking to those women in such
precarious condition. I felt as if I was responsible for their
plight.
It must be an area between Ankleshwar and Bharuch.
I was so sad that I did not realise that the train reached some
small station. The train did not stop there. As the train was
moving, I could see a huge slum area adjoining the railway
line. There were number of small huts, lined one after another,
those innumerable huts resting on thin pillars, covered by
jute curtains and mud having ceilings of sheets, mostly having
areas of 10 × 10 or say 12 × 12 at the most!
Families consisting of old parents, their young married
sons with their wives, one or two teenager sisters, and a few
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 119 120 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
children - they all must be in ragged cloths, no amenities of
bathing, washing or toilets. They have to prepare food there,
dine there and even to sleep there in a single enclosure! Men
might be wearing ragged pantallons, women torn saries.
They must have divided that hut into four divisions with the
help of old saries. In one of them, old parents might be
sleeping, in another young couple and in the other division
young girls with their child brothers and sisters.
The young unmarried girl might be withnessing young
couples love and even their coitus. She might have known
about love, courtship or even the coital activities!. Little
children might be witnessing all these.
All know about others activities, but they have to behave
as if they do not know or see anything. In such conditions
unmarried girls and young children have to live.
Bapu ! Here you might blurt out that you advised for
celibacy !
Bapu ! Will you shut up ! I am your staunch follower,
still I am an artless villager ! I may blurt out abuses surati
way, that you will not like to hear. So please, keep mum !
65 years have gone since your death. To whom can I
complain ? Whenever I see such scenes, I am grieved and
tears flow from my eyes ! I hate my shameless self. I know,
we have become blind. I only request you to come again !
There is no other go for us !
Bapu ! To Whom I Complain About Pangs
of A Half-rationlist ?
Date : 12th December 2010. Place :- Rang-Upwan.
Time : 9.30 PM.
Bapu ! You are remembered whenever and wherever I
go. I cannot refrain from depicting those incidences where
I had to remember you.
I went to 'Rang-Upwan' to hear my favourite lecturers.
The occasion was a presentation of a book of a well-known
and knowlegable rationalist Shri Ramanlal Pathak. The book
was to be presented by shree Moraribapu, who gives religious
discourses in Gujarat and all over the world. Both are involved
with special but different types of social activities. In a way,
they are gentlemen of the opposite directions; but they both
never got confronted with eachother's opinions. They are
equally good friends.
The whole programme was successfully organised. One
could see how two gentlemen having different opinions and
activities love eachother. The followers of both gentlemen
like to see them sitting together on a common platform.
When I was returning, I found some people lying down
on the cold road without any coverings, shivering in the
heavy cold. It seemed that they had no place to live.
I could not bear it. I went on sighing. How can I find
fault with you ? You warned us almost 65 years ago. I only
had to abuse myself. I asked myself, 'Am I a rationlist ? No,
I am only a hypocrite ! I published religious books, only to
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 121 122 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
earn. How such homeless, footpath-dwellers are born ? They
did not get even some fruits of our freedom, only because
I usurped them myself. Don't you know that ?
Bapu ! I counted them. They were totally 19 people
lying in a line ! May be they were more beyond that line.
I had no heart to count. I visited so many places in the city
in cold nights afterwards and found so many people lying
on almost every footpath.ÖMy mind was confused. I asked myself : 'Will these
footpath-dwellers of free India die in such conditions only
? And then their generations will also die likewise ? Will they
go on suffering till centuries ?
I found an autorikshaw. Sitting in the rikshaw, I started
worrying about the rikshaw-wala. Will he remain rikshawwala
all his life ? And his sons, grand-sons will die as rikshawwalas?
As I reached home, I hastily brought out whatever
amount (may be a hundred or two) I found from the pocket.
I handed the full amount to him. I was so purturbed that
without listening to what he was saying, I opened the door.
He was yelling, 'Sir ! You have given me more ! My charge
is only 20 rupees.'
'It's alright, bhai ! I have not given more !' Saying that
I closed the door and my mind's door also !
Ö Surat Municipal Corporation now wants to start planning
of 'Rain-basera' (Night-shelter) which was 10 years old. Now the
corporation has started to accomodate as many foot-path-dwellers
as possible to step on a terrace of a 'Pay and use building', charging
two rupees per head. This planning was called 'Rain-basera' 10
years ago. Till now so many families who lived on foot-paths
carried on their wordly affairs, their love, even child-birth also
in open. Now there is a hope that they may find some better
accomodation.
Votebank Living On Footpaths Since Generations
Bapu ! You are our only hope, but as I remember of a
poor family who is one of the 'Vote banks', living on the
footpath since generations, I remember you.
This is a story of five little children, a dog and a mother.
Bapu ! These four little angels and a dog are instrumental
in earning livelihood for the whole family.
They consist of three small to bigger boxes, a drum, two
sticks, a larger drum, bought from saturday bazaar, bigger
sticks, one four years old girl, another bigger girl, another
10 years old girl and a boy about 12 years old with a dog.
All of them are in rags. Their ragged mother stands near them
with a little child in her hands.
Bapu ! This is the 'Votebank' of your congress.
Biggest girl beats a smaller drum and the boy beats
larger drum. A girl somewhat younger, raises a stick towards
the dog and the dog stands on two hind legs, he goes on
jumping on two hind legs and reaches towards a big box.
As the girl and the boy beat the drums, the dog stands on
the big box. Now the girl puts smaller box on the bigger one
and the dog stands on it. As the girl moves the stick up and
down, the dog climbs from the big to the smaller and the
smallest box and remains standing on the smallest box keeping
its balance anyhow!
Now the smallest girl moves amongst the on-lookers
with an aluminium dish and gathers whatever they give. I
saw this team in the open square just opposite my office. It
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 123 124 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
is said that the team shows this performance in almost every
street in the city and earns livelihood.
Some one will comment against them. Such nasty, dirty
people... they go on producing children... do not care about
how to feed them, educate them... head of family lives on
children's earnings... and spends half of their earnings in
drinking !
Bapu ! Such people are the votebanks of your congress!
Now they have become votebanks of other parties also. They
live on the footpaths, have their honey-moon, their every
activity in the open... they give birth to children behind
ragged curtains and drink 'bevda' to forget their pangs.
Since generations, footpath is their home and a dog is
their property. They live in such conditions since generations.
Members of the family and dogs may change but there is no
change in their life-styles.
I remember you, sometimes I get angry with you, but
then I realise that people like me have created this 'Votebank'.
Only we have dropped a coin of a rupee or two in their dishes
and compelled them to live on the footpaths !
Bapu ! You Appear Again And Again !
Bapu ! I go on remembering you ! How many times,
I do not know. If I go on depicting like this, they may amount
to 100 books like your 'Hind-Swaraj !' So I will like to end
after depicting this last episode of last night.
As I reached my office in the morning, some one reported
that the Municipal Corporation had decided to take possession
of the whole area of Dargah, just opposite our office. The
Site will be demolished soon. All celebrated the news, because
the corporation will be constructing a school or a garden
there.
I was somewhat panicked. A godown of a scrap-merchant
was there in that cite adjoining Durgah. It is a patron shelter-
house for so many people who get livelihood by honesty. So
many scrap-collecters come here in the opposite square with
bags of scraps on a four-wheeler barrow or on their backs
to sell and thus earn something to feed their families. Some
women, children and even some aged people come every
morning with their bags, rest here, taking a 'cutting's of tea,
sell their goods in the godown and return to collect scrap.
Today, honesty is not found easily. These people do
nothing wrong. They have no capacity to do wrong. Hindus,
Muslims, Dalits, have-nots, women, children - all toil hard
to earn their livelihood, without any kind of clashes.
Bapu ! If you say and believe that the happiness of the
Dalits and poors is your only truth and your only God, then
the scrap go down is their only truth and God ! Nobody
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 125 126 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
knows what is a government, a democracy or their rights or
what is a law. They only live with the support of the scrap-
godown. They all live connected with the love.
I was panicked as if someone whipped me. For these
people, it is like dieing or like starving if there is a break
of even a day. Where else will they go to sell their scrap ?
May be there are other scrap-go downs in the city, but they
are linked or associated with this go down. They will have
to find another godown.
I do not believe in God, Still I prayed to God, 'Please,
God ! Let the scrap-merchant find a godown near by.'
Bapu ! This is not the pangs of some scrap-collectors!
This is the story of 50 crores of poor people who hardly get
one time bread. This is also the story of 375 crores of poor
people of the world. So Bapu ! I only entreat you to appear
again in the minds of 700 crores of people of the world, as
you appeared in my mind. Appear again to show a path to
the world with a new light, as I saw in you. Appear again!
Again ! Again !
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 127 128 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
Will you please do this much to make
partyless Democratic Governance complete ?
In present transition period, to make governance of the
people, for the people and by the people, is very essential.
We must immediately complete the draft of partyless
democratic governance, because now we have very little
time to prevent third world war.
Putting it in application, within a period of first 25
years, the arrangement of a house, for middle classe and the
poors, education, medical treatment and enough economic
condition to run daily routine life, must be made. This is only
my first goal.
I have thought since many years about how that can be
done. I have written so much about it, corrected again and
again and tried to complete the same. But this great task
cannot be completed by a single person or certain persons.
Therefore, considering this draft as base, the co-operation of
experienced politicians, the intellectuals, educationalists,
lawyers, social workers, literary persons, jounalists, thinkers,
the officers of different fields and the thoughts or experience
of many learned people should also be asked. Same way the
co-operation of many experienced gentlemen like you is also
necessary. Therefore, it is essential for me to know your
views and suggestions in subjects like law, education, life
style, social life, small-big crimes, human behaviour producing
hostility amongst men etc.
As for example, everyday you read in the newspaper
about all kinds of small-big crimes taking place in the society.
Will you please send me, possibly in brief, suggestions about
which are the crimes, why they take place, what to do to
prevent them, what kind of laws should be made, what other
solutions should be made without laws etc.?
(If you suggest to make laws, please, do not show more
than three sub-laws of the main law)
You everyday read many news like corruption,
capitalism, cheating, social injustice, bad incidents etc. you
can also inform me about what incident occurred ? why it
occured and how to improve it? If it is necessary to make
laws, state which laws should be made etc.
If you find any reasons and proper solutions about many
matters like Serials on T.V. Channels, its effects on the
society, justice process, delays occurring in that process,
corruptions of different kinds, suicides increased in the society,
murders, accidents, depression, escapism etc. please send me
such suggestions in short.
You can send suggestions about haphazard development
of cities, condition of farmers and labourers, pitiable condition
of children, women, handicapped, less clever people etc.,
whatever you read in the news papers every day. Going deep
into couple of incidents find the reasons of occurring the
same, solutions to prevent them. If it becomes necessary to
take shelter of law, how the law should be, etc.
Thus, taking man to world humanism, it is my dream
to establish world democracy. Please also show me the
solutions for the social, economic and educational balances
in the society.
You are requested to send your thoughts without adding
any thing extra, in brief, on good paper, with good handwriting,
on one or two pages for one point in Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi
or English. Please do not write longer than a fullscap paper
for one point.
Please send each point on separate paper. please send
details with full name-address, contact no., mobile no. etc.

hereby taking oath that election based democracy governance
is very low leveled. Because of this kind of democracy, the
democratic countries of the world are trapped into poverty
and starvation. If such democratic governance is not made
partyless, the democracy itself will become the cause of its
destruction and many countries will be trapped into internal
revolts/wars.
I certainly believe that if global democracy is to be
made successful there is no other option except the partyless
governance.
Gandhiji and Jayprakashji first of all thought for such
democracy. From the same Gujarat of Gandhi, a poet, reporter
and a thinker named Nania of Maganmon, making deep
mental thinking for sixty six years about Gandhian thoughts
and of other thinkers of the world for partylesss governance
and whatever he wrote in preliminary information in his four
books.: (1) Gandhiji my guide in the perspective of human
development. (2) Bapu, then we remember you (3) Free India
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 135 136 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
“Svatantra Bharat” (4) Yes, we can, but why we cannot, and
How we can ?
I have read / Not read / read some. The writer of there
books has declared to publish in the near future two books
named and (2) Forwarding the thoughts of Gandhiji and
Jayprakashji further for global democracy “The world of my
dream” (1) “Budget without taxes” :
The writer has written that his thoughts are not complete
but taking a new kind of civil democratic governance as
basic thought, discussing through thinkers, social workers,
educationalists, experienced lawyers and youngsters such
partiles governance can be found and to give final structure
to that kind of governance. I have read last 4 books of the
writer and earlier also from about 25 books, I have read some
and I have trust that the writer is competent to produce
structure, world thinking about quite different kind of
governance which is not produced till this day by anyone
else.
If well firmed, well civilized and peaafull governance
(Globle Democracy) is not formed, that is if the governance
of the people, for the people and by the people as said by
Abraham Lincoln is not thought newly, many countries of
the world will be the victims of internal revolts and the third
world war will knock the doors of the world. In this thought
of the writer, there seems much reality.
Through such condition only, many violent revolutions
have taken place in the world. But no good results have been
obtained through such violent revolutions. As soon as one
violent revolution ended, the seeds of another violent
revolution are being planted (tilled).
Therefore, as Gandhi said, as God Jesus Christ said, as
Mohmmad PayangabarSaheb said, happiness and peace can
be possible in the world through nonviolence only. As Gandhiji
said, only on keeping all people of the world together
happiness, peace and culture of the people of the world can
be established. Therefore, for the welfare of entire world
only non violent governance – global democracy can be
established. only through partyless governance.
I hereby, pledge that if the majority of the learneds and
experienced, considering the draft of partyless governance
of the writer as base, making ammendments and addition if
any draft will be finalized, I will accept the same and will

Six books by Shri Nanubhai Naik forthe partyless governance as said by Gandhiji
and Jay Prakashji(1) Gandhi : My Guide In The Perspective Of
Human Upliftment :
When the elections to elect government
started, people believed that the real democracyhad commenced now. But Gandhiji himself thencalled the parliament a prostitute, way back in1909. Not only that, he added that, it is barrenalso, because it gives no fruit. He said, ‘My truthis the happiness of downtroddens and poor. That
is only my God.’ Thereafter, he started the search for it. Forhuman upliftment, he had thought to search such governancewhich can give the people of India the freedom in true sense. He also thought that such governance starting from India canreach to the freedom of the world, i.e. : Global Democracy. The author is writing books on this subject. This book is the
first in the series. (Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi, Enlish Rs. 25)
(2) Bapu ! Then, You Were rememberedIn 1909, Gandhiji gave the definition of human
freedom in “Hind Swaraj”. Even after 65 yearsof freedom, it is not realised whether havenotsand downtroddens get even 2% relief as per theirdefinition ! An assessment by the author basedon true incidents of Surat City, the book is aboutwhen and how in its pathetic narration, the author
remembered Gandhiji.(Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi Rs. 100,
English Rs. 125)
(3) Independent India :The author believes that we have imprisonedGandhiji in “Hind Swaraj” and “Satya NaPrayogo (The story of ‘My Experiments WithTruth’).” If Gandhiji were alive today, he wouldhave taken ‘U’ turn according to the present timeand circumstances to achieve the basic aim of“Hind Swaraj”, which was written in 1909. The
writer has written this book in the form of presumedconversation between Gandhiji, his son Harilal and the writeras an editor. (Gujarati, Hindi, Marathi Rs. 150. English Rs.
200)
(4) Yes, We Can ! But Why We Can Not ? And How
We Can !

of America, Mr. Obama, remembering Martin
Luther King and mentioning his words, ‘Yes we
can’ and ‘I have a dream’, remembered Gandhiji.
The book giving detailed discussion about why
Obama will not succeed and what are its reasons?
If Obama wants to follow Gandhiji, how can he
reach the Gandhian philosophy and succeed. (Gujarati, Hindi,
Marathi Rs. 150, English Rs. 200)
(5) Budget without taxes
The taxation is the biggest medium of
corruption. The government has not to mention
taxes at the time of presenting the budget. The
government has to give only the details of the
work proposed and the details of its expenditure.
The draft of such arrangement that the expenses
automatically come to the government continuously. (To be
published Upto November-2013)
(6) The World of My Dream

world humanism. The draft of how to forward
their thoughts further, changing election-based
ruling and going further through partyless

Shri Nanubhai Naik – Introduction
Native Village : Bhandut, Tal.Olpad, Dist. : Surat Date
of Birth : 10-5-1927
Shri Chandrakant Bakshi to whom he has described as
his true well wisher and great friend in “Aabhang” that the
creator of your poetry collections, Shri NanubhaiNayak holds
good interest in literature also.
His initial novels “Pran Jago re” and “Nari Narnu
Ramakdu” three editions of which have already been
published and in which the impression of pathetic sweet
language of Sharadbabu is clearly experienced. “Pran Jago
re” is a pathetic sweet creation of social life from Vapi to
Tapi.
The language and the symbols he arranged in “Suratna
Dhulia Maholla ma” appear new and special through many
ways. This social novel flowing with historical references
has become very enjoyable because of its spoken words. This
kind of novels is found very few in Gujarati.
The renowned advocate of Mumbai Shri Chhelshankar
Vyas was an old ascetic of literature and Journalism. As a
senior friend of Shri Nanubhai Naik, he came to Surat to
proceed the case admitted by Gujarat government against a
short story “Kutti” of Shri Chandrakant Bakshi, at that time
he read the novel “Tofan” by Shri Nanubhai Naik. His wife
said, “He has read very few Gujarati novels. Mainly he reads
only English books but he read your “Tofan” novel completely,
not only that but he liked it so much that he made many
remarks also while reading it. Later he also discussed about
the language and symbols of “Tofan”, specially about the
glittering thoughts presented in the same.”
“Oh India” written in 1971 is his first novel of Gujarat,
discussing about politics. This novel already has been
published in Marathi. Renowned writer and journalist Shri
Chandrakant Bakshi has admired this novel very much. And
specially at the time of visit of Surat, the governor of that
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 141 142 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
time stood in the lift till the red carpet being spread and
congratulated for the remark made by the writer.
Besides these his many other novels, collections of
satirical articles, collections of short stories etc. have been
published.
He has written satirical poems for years in satirical
“Sandesh” daily with title “Sanjay Vani” in “Pratap” daily,
“BholaBhagat Na Bhakhela” in “Chet Machhandar”, “Kavi
Nang Kahe” and in “Nutan Bharat” daily and “Arunoday”
weekly “Guru Ghantal Kahe” titles.
Those who ask for original plays, they should see his
“Mudita Balaram”. - a worth seeing drama.
From the remarkable folders sent by “SahityaSangam”
every Diwali, his satirical poems are admired so much that
every now and then “Gujarat Samachar” daily “Sandesh”
daily and “Milap”, “NayaMarg” etc. many magazines have
published them all. “Sandesh” daily had some times engaged
space of three full columns for his poems.
He has written more than two hundreds short stories,
satirical articles etc. which already have been published in
Prajabandhu, Chandani, NavChetan, Aaram, AkhandAnand,
Savita, Kankavati, Padchhaya, Apsara, Chet Machhandar,
Chitralekha, AbilGulal, Nutan Bharat, Arunodaya, Sarvodaya
etc. magazines. “Sabras” a continued story of child literature
was published in “Jansatta” by weekly periodicals.
In the book named “Aacharya Rajnish Kaye Marge” he
has made postmortem of conduct and thoughts of Rajanishji.
He was invited to Surat for three days and during closed door
meeting with him, had created a big controversy.
He is associated with many social and cultural activities
of Surat. He was the secretary of “Narmad Sahitya Sabha”
for many years. Now he is the Vice President of “Narmad
Sahitya Sabha”. He had been the member of Managing
Committee of Sarvajanik Education Society, a renowned
educational organization of Surat. He is the president of
Surat Printing Press Association and Surat Commercial
Printers Society for many years. He was the welcome president
of “MudrakParishad” held in Surat. He is the founder member
of Gujarat Printers Federation and had been the president
also. He is the established member of Gujarati Books
Publishers Association. He is the pioneer of Gujarati and
Marathi Pocket Books. Late AcharyaAtre making
observations of Marathi Pocket Books of “Sahitya Sangam”
in his “Maratha” daily for three weeks asked question that
if a publisher sitting in Surat out of Maharashtra can publish
such beautiful pocket books, only for Rs. 2.50 then what do
the Marathi Publishers do ?
He is running a big movement of “book culture” against
“T.V. Culture” by offering cheap books to the people of
Gujarat. He is trying sincerely to pay the obligation of Gujarati
people and literary persons by publishing the creation of first
category of literary persons in Gujarati at half value and
publishing the same creation in Hindi, Marathi and English
besides Gujarati.
To give 23 books yearly worth Rs. 1800 at 70 % less
value means only against Rs. 545 through home delivery,
such a five years “GranthYatra” scheme was introduced. It
has completed five years. It is the first experiment all over
India to offer the books in five years worth Rs. 9000 against
the payment of only Rs. 2725 through home delivery. The
main purpose of this scheme is,the cultured Gujaratis can
give legacy of library of best books to their family at ordinary
investment only.
There is no complete democracy anywhere in the world.
Making such surprising statement, to save democracy, in
“How should be good government” he has presented complete
draft of good government, which has been published in
Hindi, Marathi and English besides Gujarati. Many great
leaders of India have admired the same. Same way, 65
corrections suggested by him to “constitution reform tribunal”
its book named “Suggestions for Constitution Amendments”
have been published in Hindi, Marathi and English besides
Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 143 144 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
Gujarati, which were accepted by the president of constitution
reform tribunal himself and he had instructed his steno to
place important points in the meeting of the committee.
Specially the matter of pleasure is such that the constitutional
reforms tribunal had suggested amendments of 400 pages
out of which the government and election commission
accepted about 15 suggestions and all of them are from the
books of Shri Nanubhai Naik.

Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered / 145 146 / Bapu ! Then, You Were Remembered
(2) If you get power to be disappeare like Mr. India ?
Then, every night I would go and frighten those corrupt
and hypocrite people so much that they would be forced to
give up corruption.
(3) What is your idea to pass a holiday ?
As such, on holiday I do not like to pass a day without
any activity. According to me activities specially like writing,
publication, agriculture and to be connected with them, give
me pleasure of a holiday.
(4) What is money meant to you ?
Money gives us happiness as well as unhappiness also.
If money is kept stored it becomes poison and if it is spent
sensibly it becomes nectar. If we get double or treble money
than our necessity, it gives us happiness but when you become
hungry of money then it harasses you.
(5) You did what you wanted to do ?
Yes, I am the son of a farmer of the village. For sixty
years I have kept Gandhiji and wiser Gandhi Harilal in my
mind. At the age of 20, I wrote the first article of politics
in “Gujarat Mitra”. When Jayprakashji was to visit Navsari,
I had written him an open letter. At that time Shri Dixit,
published the whole letter in two columns with a preamble
in remaining five columns. (in those days dailies were of
seven columns). Thereafter, I wrote about fifteen books on
politics. Now I am going to publish seven books at a time,
on today’s explosive condition of the world. I have written
about ten thousand pages on computer. The partyless
democratic governance about which Gandhiji and Jayprakashji
thought, is revived by me. It was my goal and it is about to
be published.
(6) What you expect essential in relation ?
I connect relation with feelings; relation with mother,
with friends, with the members of the family, with city, birth
place, and the country, but in all relations, feelings and desire
of happiness of others is important to me.
B.T.Y.R. 10
(7) Which is that bad habit would to like to quit ?
As such, there are many bad habits I would like to give
up but mainly whenever I think of a man and I find his fault,
I gaze within and I find so many faults in me that I believe
that man is greater than me.
(8) What is dressing to you and how do you select your
clothes ?
I am little bit careless in clothes. I do not believe in,
not to wear good clothes, but as mainly, through out my life,
I am connected with the afflictions of the poors, needy,
havenots children and the women. I wrote about more than
fifty books, mainly I have written about them, because I lived
like them only, therefore, I rarely wear costly clothes.
(9) Which person of history would you like to meet ?
For me, Gandhiji is my guide. To me, In last two thousand
years, Gandhiji is a greater revolutionery than Buddha,
Mahavir, Lenin, Tolstoy, Ruskin etc. and many saints and
thinkers. I always feel that it is necessary to set free Gandhiji
from “Hind Swaraj” and “Satya na prayogo”.
(10) If there are no women ?
It is only possible if science make such invention, we
have to wait till then.
(11) Which element of man attracts you ?
What is of man ? What is of woman ? Today in both
of these, any element which can attract me, is seldom seen.
(12) Which filmy hero do you like ?
Once the same question was asked to me and I had said,
Kadarkhan. But I dislike the present celebrities.
(13) When you can not prevent anger ?
Generally I am not angry, but having big staff and big
house, sometimes I have to pretend to be angry.
(14) Which is the place, without going there life feels
incompete ?
I do not have any fascination of any place. Wherever
I am, I live with pleasure.
(15) What is a home according to you ?
All know that a house does not mean four walls. A home
is made by the members of the house. Home is only possible
when you forget and forgive every one and only love all -
that is home.
(16) Whom would you like to be ?
I like very much to be “Savyasachi” of Sharadbabu.
Generally, I try to be the same.
(17) How do you understand death ?
I am never afraid of death. But I always think that till
I can do something good for even a single person, I would
like to live even if my body gives me pain or trouble, but
when I will be unable to do any thing, I would like to commit
suicide.

The first collection of poems having the longest title in India, was
published in the largest size (15’’ × 20’’). In 1971 it was said that
Indiraji had collected Rs. 90 Lacs election fund from every industry.
Thereafter, every industry had increased the prices of its products
by getting black money for their product over and above its
principal price. Paper industry had also increased the prices and
collected black money. At that time every month Rs. 17 Lacs were
going to paper industry as black money from Surat. Thereafter the
writer had an intense movement for that. All such details are
mentioned in his book, ‘What Is A Good Government?’ Since
then, his publishing house ‘Sahitya Sangam’ had stopped sending
New Years Greeting Cards and instead of that started sending
poems on contemporary politics. This was his first collection of
