The good steward is attentive to the many blessings we receive and is generous as a response in gratitude. The more we recognize God’s mercy, living and acting in our lives, the more we will come to know ourselves as disciples who are called to share mercy with others. How do we know God’s mercy? Often, mercy comes to us through the actions of others. Think about the friend or family member who overlooked anger, moodiness, or selfishness during the rush of Christmas preparations; remember times when someone has forgiven you, without your even needing to ask for forgiveness. This is mercy! In recalling these moments, we become more aware of mercy which is shown to us in the everyday circumstances of our lives, and we learn how important being stewards of God’s mercy can be to others. This month, make a list of the many ways you have been shown mercy, in your past, and in recent weeks. Then, resolve to intentionally share mercy in your daily interactions with others. In months to come, we will consider together our call to be good stewards of God’s mercy, within our families and among friends, in our parish, and especially with those who most need to know God’s loving mercy through us. Stewards of God’s Mercy by Leisa Anslinger At this beginning of the year of our Lord, 2016, let us resolve to grow as stewards of God’s mercy in the coming year. Heavenly Father, In your love you have called us to know you, led us to trust you, and bound our life with yours. Surround this child with your love, protect this child from evil. Fill this child with the Holy Spirit and receive this child into the family of your church, that this child may walk with us in the way of Christ, and grow in the knowledge of your love.

PILGRIMAGE During the Jubilee of Mer-cy, Pope Francis encour-ages each diocese to open a Holy Door, to which pilgrims can jour-ney. This door repre-sents the compassion, love, mercy, and consola-tion of God working in our lives. Join us as we pilgrim to St. Peter’s Cathedral in Scranton and experience the mercy of God. The pilgrimage will take place on Saturday, February 27 from 9:30-2pm. It begins with Morning Prayer and a brief presentation on the Jubi-lee Year of Mercy, followed by opportunities for con-fession and private prayer both in the Cathedral and the Cathedral Prayer Garden. Mass will be celebrated at 12:10pm followed by a tour of the Cathedral. Lunch will be provided in the Diocesan Pastoral Center.

Reservations must be made by calling the church of-fice. Cost is $10. DEADLINE for reservations is Feb-ruary 7th.

His Excellency, the Most Reverend Joseph C. Bambera, D.D., J.C.L., Bishop of Scranton, and the Office for Parish Life wish to invite couples celebrating their 25th or 50th wedding anniver-sary in 2016 to a diocesan Wedding Anniver-

sary Mass on Sunday, June 5. The event includes a 2:30 pm mass at St. Peter’s Cathedral followed by a reception. Requests for an invitation, with a mailing address, should be made through your parish office before March 7.

LIVING MERCY IN THE JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY Calling us to a Year of Mercy, Pope Francis writes in Misericordiae Vultus, the Bull of Indiction of the Extraor-dinary Jubilee of Mercy, “Mercy is the very foundation of the Church’s life...nothing in her preaching and in her witness to the world can be lacking in mercy. The Church’s very credibility is seen in how she shows mer-ciful and compassionate love...It is time to return to the basics and to bear the weaknesses and struggles of our brothers and sisters. Mercy is the force that rea-wakens us to new life and instills in us the courage to look to the future with hope.” How can we contribute to this essential mission of the Church? How can we show others the mercy of God? We say that God is compassionate, but we ignore the poor. We say that God loves us and has mercy on us, but we hold grudges against our friends. Our actions need to authentically reflect God’s mercy. The Corporal Works of Mercy are found in the teach-ings of Jesus and give us a model for how we should treat all others, as if they were Christ in disguise. They “are charitable actions by which we help our neighbors in their bodily needs” (USCCA). They come from the Parable of the Last Judgment (Matthew 25:31-46) They respond to the basic needs of humanity as we journey together through this life. Done with prayer and reflection the Corporal Works of Mercy can transform you-into a humbler person, into a person who is good at loving, into a better pipeline of God’s love, into a true follower of Jesus. The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks

on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
