Chapter 1

Introduction

What is in this Chapter

This chapter describes the SPECTRUM Management Module for Banyan VINES File Server II. It also provides the Model Type Name assigned to the Banyan VINES File Server II in SPECTRUM. The Model Type Name refers to the template used to specify device attributes, actions, and associations for device models in SPECTRUM.

Banyan VINES Management ModuleThe Banyan VINES Management Module manages any device running Banyan VINES File Server II software 5.x and the SNMP Agent 2.x. Banyan VINES File Server II management in SPECTRUM is based on the Management Information Base (MIB), which comes as part of the management module.

SPECTRUM and the Banyan VINES File Server II

The Banyan VINES File Server II is a powerful network and resource management system. To give your system greater capabilities, SPECTRUM has created the Banyan VINES File Server II Proxy that is managed by the Banyan VINES File Server II. The BanFileServer and BanFSProxy have identical views and, with a few exceptions, functionality. Use the following Proxy rules as a guide before modeling your system:

Page 15: Banyan VINES File Server II Management Module Guideehealth-spectrum.ca.com/support/secure/products/Spectrum_Doc/pdf... · logo, DCM, IMT, and VNM are registered ... Banyan VINES File

The Banyan VINES File Server II Applications

Introduction Banyan VINES File Server II1-2 Management Module Guide

1. The BanFileServer and BanFSProxy must have the same IP address.

2. The BanFileServer and BanFSProxy have different Community Strings.

If you destroy a BanFileServer model, all of the BanFSProxy models are also destroyed. The difference in functionality appears when you establish settings and thresholds and when you receive traps. These functions can only be performed through the BanFileServer model.

The Banyan VINES File Server II ApplicationsThe Banyan Vines File Server II supports both common and device-specific applications described in the Bridging Applications Reference, the MIB II Applications Reference, and the Miscellaneous Applications Reference. SPECTRUM management of an Banyan VINES File Server II is based on the following comon and device-specific applications:

• MIB-II (SNMP2_Agent)- ICMP (ICMP_App)- System (System2_App)- TCP (TCP2_App)- UDP (UDP2_App)

• Routing (GenRtrApp)- IP Routing (IP2RtrApp)- AppleTalk App (ApplTlkRtrApp)- VINES Routing (VinesRtrApp)

• VINES Protocols App(VinePrtclApp)- VINES Mail App (VineMailApp)

Event and Alarm Messages

What is in this ChapterThis chapter describes the types of events and alarms generated by the Banyan VINES File Server II and any probable cause messages corresponding to these alarms.

Events and alarms originate as unsolicited Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) messages known as traps. These traps are translated as SPECTRUM events and displayed in the Event Log. If an event is mapped to an alarm in SPECTRUM, the event will also appear in the Alarm View as an alarm. (For more information on specific SNMP traps, refer to RFC 1066, available through the Internet system. Also refer to the Management Information Base (MIB) documentation for the Banyan VINES File Server II devices.)

Banyan VINES File Server II Events and Alarms This table lists the event messages appearing in the Event Log, and any corresponding probable cause messages that may be displayed in the Enterprise Alarm Manager View for the Banyan VINES File Server II.

NOTE

Each event/alarm listed in this appendix includes the event code, the event/alarm message, a brief description of the event/alarm, an alarm mapping indicator, and any probable cause message for the mapped alarm. When variable data is inserted in a message, it is indicated by a {v}.
