Editor’s Letter... Sincere

apologies to anyone who missed

the opportunity to have their bin

emptied due to the notice in last

month’s Arrow. The Arrow had

already gone to print when the

strike was called off! Lesson

Learned!

With only eight weeks till Christmas, everything is

in full throttle once more, this month’s Arrow has

lots of local fayres in November and December so

be sure to check them out, they are always good

to visit and you can pick up some great stocking

fillers! Our local village pubs are all offering

Christmas fayre menus throughout December and

Walkers Nurseries and Ramada Encore Hotel are

offering special Christmas events that need to be

booked in advance. All the information is in this

month’s issue.

Talking about local Pubs, The Eagle and Child in

Auckley was awarded pub of the week by the

Yorkshire Post in October. The pub was judged

for its food, atmosphere and value, all of which

were rated highly. Congratulations!

Heritage Fireplaces are offering a winter warming

10 percent of all orders taken before 31st

December with this month’s Arrow, if you are

looking to update your fire or surround, give them

a call or pop into their new show room on Balby

Road.

All this talk about Christmas and we still have

November to get through! With the half term

holiday eating into November, Christmas can feel a

long way off! If you are planning your own Guy

Fawkes evening, Hydroactive have a great range of

fireworks with special offers available and Maise

Maze will have their ever popular Shriek week to

entertain the children.

The deadline for the December issue for

advertising and articles is Wednesday 14th

November. The Arrow will be delivered from

Friday 23rd November.

Best Wishes

This year, the Poppy Appeal begins on 27th October and once again, I

am asking for help with door to door collecting in Blaxton and

Finningley. Last year, we collected £948.32 from our efforts, but we one of our

volunteers has left the area.

I was delighted that we raised 5387.53 in Auckly, Blaxton, Branton and Finningley

combined including £101.75 that was gift aided. I appeal to tax payers to ask for a

gift aid envelope if they are donating £2.00 or more.

Thank you for helping us raise a record amount last year. Please help us to raise

as much this year!

AUCKLEY PARISH COUNCIL COMMUNITY CONSULTATION—Neighbourhood Plans

The Government’s Localism Act introduced the concept of Neighbourhood Planning: a

bottom-up approach to planning for the future of an area led by the community.

Communities now have a real opportunity to develop plans and shape proposals for the

places in which they live.

The purpose of Neighbourhood Planning is to give local people greater ownership of the

plans and policies that affect their local area. The intention is to empower local people to

take a proactive role in shaping the future of their village. Once in place, the plans will

comprise the framework for change in that area for the next ten years.

A Neighbourhood Plan could help to ensure that development is in line with local needs,

providing greater public amenity and more certainty for developers. A Neighbourhood

Plan would be able to identify a specific site or broad location, specify the form, size, type

and design of new development.

The parish council can initiate a Neighbourhood Plan if residents feel there is a need and

would set up a Forum of interested residents, together with some councillors, to take a

Plan forward.

Doncaster Council has a duty to support communities in the production of

Neighbourhood Plans, e.g. advising on the nature of the plan area, assisting and facilitating

consultation. However there is no requirement to provide financial assistance. The cost

of the Plan will depend upon its size, scope and complexity and the Government

estimates this could be upwards of £17k to produce. The timescale for producing a Plan

could take up to 2 years.

The parish council would be interested to hear residents’ views as to whether it should

proceed with the implementation of a Plan and also whether any resident would wish to

became part of that process.

Please let us know your views by contacting any members of the parish council and/or

the Clerk, contact details below:

Clerk: Mrs Marjorie Caygill, Telephone: 01302 770922 E-mail: [email protected]

News from Hayfield Lane Primary SchoolNews from Hayfield Lane Primary School

Exciting and fantastic news from the

Hayfield Lane Primary School.

It was with great delight back in the summer when the Vulcan Spirit

to the Sky trust agreed that our school could use the Vulcan as our

new School Logo.

So, on the afternoon of Thursday 27th September all the children,

teaching staff and some governors made their way down to the

hanger of Vulcan XH558, this was to secure our connexions with the

Vulcan and to launch our new school uniform along with our new

badge of the Vulcan XH 558. This is renewing our past School heritage when Hayfield Lane Primary

School would have been the school used by children of service personnel when the current site was

the operational V-bomber base - RAF Finningley.

When we arrived at the hanger there was waiting a BBC film crew, reporters and photographers

from the local press and radio. We had a wonderful time with the BBC news reporter filming our

prestigious visit to which was later

shown that night on the Look North

News. The children had an exciting

afternoon in the hanger looking at

and exploring the huge frame of the

aircraft and had opportunity to take

their own special photographs.

Various members of the crew were

on hand to answer their questions

and to let the children know exactly

what it is that they do. Local MP

Caroline Flint was also on hand to

help the launch, she and our head

teacher Mrs Round presented the

Trust with a school pennant that will

be flown in XH558 from now on.

The Vulcan has become a familiar

sight around our school but on one

exciting afternoon Vulcan XH558

had got permission from air traffic

control at the airport to do a special

low level fly-past over the school. So

with great anticipation and

excitement the children waited in

the playground when with a tingling

roar the aircraft came over the top

of the school and was a sight to

behold, all these experiences will be

something the children will be

talking about for a long time to

come.

News From Branton St Wilfrid’s Primary School

Visit by the South Yorkshire

Mounted Police We were delighted to welcome the

South Yorkshire Mounted Police

who visited us with two police

horses (George) Oakwell and (Eddy)

Edlington. Each class had an

opportunity to learn about the work

of the mounted police and their

horses and how important it is to

wear high visibility clothing when

out on the roads, either on horses

or bicycles. The children were

encouraged to make lots of noise

and jump up and down in front of

the horses as the police officers

demonstrated how well trained

George and Eddy are. They

demonstrated their skills of moving

forwards, backwards and sideways to control large crowds. At break time the whole school

enjoyed watching the horses canter around our field. The visit was organised by our road

safety officer, Judith, who kindly provided road safety rewards for each class.

Jubilate News We were delighted at Jubilate to be invited to St James Church, Hexthorpe to sing at the

launch of the Samaritans Purse Operation Christmas Child 2012.

Twenty four members of Jubilate sang a selection of our favourite hymns and led the

communal singing at the end of the night. Samaritans Purse are hoping to have sent over 1

million shoeboxes in total to children around the world who would otherwise not receive a

present, by the end of 2012.

Jubilate would like to thank everyone who helped us on the night, and Mrs Gravette from St

James Church for asking us to sing at this event again next year. We enjoyed ourselves very

much. Mrs Dilks and Mrs Thompson

Harvest Festival In our Harvest Festival this year we continued with our Olympics theme. Each class chose a

country which was represented at The London Olympic Games and gave a short presentation

about different food traditionally eaten in that country. We had a feast table decorated

with the Olympic rings and a chef from each country took their food to the table where the

“athletes” were sitting with their flags. We had our traditional harvest table, with many

generous donations from parents. The sale of goods following the Harvest service raised

£335 for Christian Aid, with remaining produce being donated to the M25 charity in

Doncaster.

Playtime Equipment We have a very proactive

Parent Teachers’

Association at St.

Wilfrid’s. During the year

they organise many

exciting events for the

children and also raise

large amounts of money

during the year to extend

and enrich the

opportunities available to

children in school.

Recently our P.T.A.

funded £800 worth of

playground equipment for

the children to use during playtimes and lunchtimes. The children have begun to use all the

new equipment with great enthusiasm

THE YORKSHIRE WILDLIFE PARK!! On Monday 1st October class 5 went on a school trip to the

Yorkshire Wildlife Park. We started off the day by going

to see the lions. We also saw zebras and also the emus,

ostriches, antelopes and two bulls. After that, we went to

watch the meerkat ranger talk and we saw a ranger called

Emma feeding them fruit and vegetables. We also had a

talk in the classroom, where we learnt about some

endangered species.

After lunch we went to the wallabies. They were cute and

also Ryan the ranger let us stroke them and feed them

carrots. Next we went to the red river hogs, which are

orangey pigs, they kept on snorting at us and they were

really funny to watch when they were rolling in the mud!

We then went to see the marmosets, who were running and

hopping in the cage, and the camels. Next we went and

found our way to the new giraffes. Finally, we went up to

the Leopard Heights, where we saw the leopards sat on the

climbing area!

YEAR 2’s VISIT TO THE

HEPWORTH GALLERY, WAKEFIELD On Tuesday 9th of October Year 2 went to

The Hepworth Gallery in Wakefield. It was

part of our Science week work and we were

looking at materials as part of our Science

curriculum in the classroom. We were met by

Bryony who was taking our workshop ‘Fabulous

Felt.’ We went straight into the studios were

Bryony explained what we would be doing and

then we went to work in the galleries upstairs.

Then we went back downstairs to create our

own felt. The results were fantastic and the

children really enjoyed the visit. One child

said “That was the best school trip ever!”

We hope you enjoyed reading our news and

look forward to sharing more of our activities

next month.

Best Wishes,

C. Barnes,

Auckley School News

Kelham Island Museum

On Tuesday 25th September, year 3 made the journey back to 1939 and to Kelham Island Museum in

Sheffield.

We had become war-time children! We experienced what rationing was like, we made gas masks and had

a go at packing a very small suitcase to become an evacuee. The underwear was very fetching, as you can

see. We also looked at some of the very new jobs that women had to do and had a go at running an

RAF Operations Room.

We learnt a lot about the Second World War and realised how lucky we are to live in Doncaster in 2012.

We all really enjoyed the trip and looked fantastic in our wartime outfits.

NSPCC Sponsored Event

A big thank you to everyone who supported this event by sponsoring the children. As a school we

managed to raise an amazing £18 so thank you very much.

Roald Dahl Day

We have been celebrating Roald Dahl Day by dressing up as

Roald Dahl characters and having a creative day. Every year

group took part and made something to help make our library

a more attractive place to visit. We had visits from his

characters, made giant pictures, created dances, banners,

posters, and models to sit on the shelves. The library now

looks fantastic and is an inviting place to go and read. We also

had a great day creating it!

Bike it comes to Auckley

We held a Bike It Breakfast and Dr Bike on Wednesday 3rd October to launch bike it in at Auckley School;

which was a great success. We had over 68 children travelling to school on their bikes with many parents

cycling with them. There were sausage sandwiches or toast for those who had cycled. The smoothie bike

was there and we took it in turns to have a go and make their our own smoothies. We want children to

keep travelling to school on their bikes and will have many more events throughout the year. Our next

event is going to be a Get Bright Day on Monday 22nd October as we want children to decorate them-

selves and their bikes in bright colours to keep them safe while riding.

The Generation Game

Now I’ve really started to settle in one of the things I’m enjoying most about being a Curate here is

that the job brings me into contact with a really broad age range of people on a daily basis.

In October I took part in the 1940’s night at St Oswald’s in Finningley and the rehearsals for this

were a real eye opener for me. I had to learn lots of songs from an era I was almost completely

unfamiliar with and I performed alongside many people who told me great stories of their

experiences of growing up in wartime Britain - my favourite one of which was from a lady who was

actually born in an air raid shelter!

Two days later I found myself at 1st Doncaster Brownies who meet in Auckley Parish Centre.

Together we talked about how Christians believe that God doesn’t want us to worry about

frivolous things like fashion and our appearance but to always look at what He has provided for us

and to be thankful. It was really lovely to do a craft activity with the girls, which involved them

thinking carefully about what they most wanted to thank God for. Their ideas were highly creative

and ranged from families and friends to pets and, believe it or not, school!

I feel valuing all our differing generations is massively important, as it was in the Bible. The Old

Testament tells the story of Abraham who fathered the seven sons who went on to found the

nation of Israel where God’s word was passed on from generation to generation. Then in the book

of Acts we can read about the establishment of the early church through the passing on of Jesus’s

teaching from the eye witnesses of his work and miracles and those who were directly effected by

his ministry.

Ultimately, whatever our age, whatever stage of life we are in, as a Christian I believe God has a plan

for all our lives. It says in the book of Jeremiah that the Lord declares ‘I know the plans I have for

you. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future’ and I feel this

hopeful message counts as much for

our current generation as it did when

it was first written.
