L ARGE format digital print(LFDP) is a revolution. Evolvingfrom digitally printed photos,LFDP has grown to replace

traditional signage. Where shops onceemployed sign-writers to draw on theirwalls and windows, LFDP-produced self-adhesive vinyls (SAV) now provide a moreattractive solution. The acceptance ofLFDP has been so prolific that itsproducts now surround us in the modernworld.

In addition to the visual appeal ofLFDP-output, other advantages includeits flexibility:• No minimum quantity requirements• No set-up charge• No size limitations

LFDP was near unaffordable formost companies only a few years ago.But just as we have observed in the

digitally printed photos market, priceshave dropped dramatically. Now, LFDPis affordable to almost anyone, and withexponential growth in the demand forLFPD, Bannershop anticipates thatprices will only continue to drop.

With the decline in prices, themarket is growing, not only in dollarterms but also market share. Existingusers are finding new and innovativeways to make the most of LFPD andnew adopters are constantly knockingon the door. This has culminated in ashift in focus from outdoor digitalprinting to indoor prints used inexhibitions and retail shops.

Further, the saturation of theoutdoor advertising (eg billboards) hasled marketers to identify newadvertising space in the form of mobileadvertising, street furniture and flags.The flexible nature of the revolutionthat is LFDP has embraced each of theseadvancements and matched it with aLFDP solution.

As LFDP continues to evolve,commercial offset printers shouldconsider partnering with a LFDP

supplier. Whilst many are concernedthat LFDP suppliers will cannibalisetheir customer bases, Bannershop firmlybelieves that this is a non-issue. On thecontrary, Bannershop expects that suchpartnerships will expand the customerbase of both partners.

Under the ‘no partnership’ condition,a single corporate customer’s corporateprint department will order productsfrom an offset printer, whilst the samecompany’s marketing department willorder from an LFDP supplier, therebyincurring ordering and other costs andtime (including contact and tender) forboth orders.

However, under the ‘partnership’condition, working together, the offsetprinter and the LFPD supplier are ableto provide the single corporatecustomer with a one-stop shop for all itsprinting needs. Furthermore, thecustomer will save on ordering andother costs and time. The strongerrelationship that results between thecustomer and the partnership will alsofortify the barrier to entry for othercompetitors. AP

AT some point in time as the largeformat digital printing marketgrows, every traditional o�setprinter faces this dilemma: shall I

do my own large format printing in houseor outsource?

Let’s look at the positives ofpurchasing your own large formatprinting equipment. First, the raw cost ofproducing the output is low. All you haveto buy is the media, ink and then print it.Second, you do not have to wait forsomeone to get around to doing yourwork. Third, you can choose whatevermaterial you wish and control youroutput.

Now, the negatives. For the initial costof the equipment, printer, rip, computer,welder, laminator.... we are looking attens of thousands of dollars. Second, it isa steep learning curve. Our technicianshave been doing this professionally for 10

years and we are still learning! Third, it isa time consuming process. While somesalesmen may tell you that colourmatching software and pro�ling havemade colour work easy, it is not easy:colour correcting requires skill, includingadvanced Photoshop masking techniques.If you are serious about precise colourmatching, expect to invest years learninghow to achieve this successfully. Ofcourse you could hire someone in-house.But at the end of the day whichever wayyou look at this, it is not a free ride by anymeans.

Also, you need to be sure you willhave the work to run the printer at leaston a daily basis. Wide format digitalprinters are designed to run constantly. Ifthey sit unused even for a few days, theymay develop clogging in the nozzles,causing time and ink waste to correct theproblem. In extreme cases (for someprinters) clogging occurs within hoursunused, and nozzles will need to bemanually �ushed (not fun, believe me!).

Potential scenarioHere is the potential scenario you may belooking at: You buy a large format printerwith piezo heads. Piezo is a greattechnology that produces high qualityprints. You plan to print a couple of timesa week, possibly all day. The days that theprinter is not working, the heads areclogging. Once you start the printer and

do a nozzle check, one or maybe severalcycles are needed to unclog. This can runfrom a minimum cost of $10 to morethan $50 in extreme cases. If you do apower cleaning you will literally see theink levels - translated your money -dropping in front of your eyes!

All of a sudden, without evenproducing one print, you already areupside down. Then, after the �rst year,when the warranty expires, here comesthe service agreement. Do not foolyourself - you do need one. If anythingeven minimal goes wrong, it can be $500for a tech to come out. Anything major,we are talking four �gures. So a servicecontract for about $800 a year is a goodinvestment.

If you own a thermal head printer,the life span is not as long as piezo, and inpossibly a couple of years you will seenozzle failure. Again, always good ideato have a service agreement. In any case,also prepare plan to replace that printer,no matter what brand, in three or fouryears. Better ones are coming out everyyear, and if you stick with an old printeryou would be making prints that are notas good as others created with betternew technology.

The answerYou may be asking yourself at this pointhow a large format digital printingspecialist can then survive. The answer issimple: volume. By running the printerseven days a week, 20 hours a day,clogging is less frequent, and the serviceagreements are not a huge factor in a perprint production costs.

If you are a printer with a lot of timeon your hands (which I am con�dentthat not many printers are) and willing toinvest money and countless hours youmay be a candidate for in-house largeformat printing.

Ultimately the decision is yours. Thereis a lot of hype regarding how the printingworld is going digital and how easy it allis. The successful commercial printers Ihave met and worked with are the oneswho can wisely manage their time andknow what to do themselves and what tooutsource. The key is to �nd a large for-mat digital trade printer who understandsand is receptive to your needs.
