This week’s ideas for Helping Other Eagles Soar this week were:

~ Put aside your differences and just help others

~ Don't let others judge you! Just be you!

~ Be friends with all. You don't have to be besties, just be nice.

~ Don’t just walk away when in a awkward situation when you could make the change that needs to take place,

even, if it makes people see you differently.

~ Always be nice to someone, even if they’re mean to you.

The last week of February has been an event-filled one at BMS.  Our 7th- and 8th-grade bands performed very well at

Festival.  Our 7th-grade band received an overall Division 2 rating with a Division 1 score in sight reading, and our 8th-grade

band received an overall Division 1 rating with a Division 1 score in sight reading.  Just as important as their performances,

Mr. Jacobs heard a lot of comments from workers, parents, and chaperones about the positive behavior and professionalism

of our students!  Thanks, too, to our jazz band for the lunch performances today!

Our Unified Basketball took part in a tournament with Zeeland Christian and was featured on WOTV!  See the link to watch

the feature.  Some of our students were even interviewed by Maranda!  A basketball game – for everyone!

PLEASE VOTE TUESDAY, MAY 8

ANNUAL OPERATING MILLAGE RENEWAL PROPOSAL AND

SINKING FUND MILLAGE PROPOSAL

On May 8, two ballot proposals will come before Hudsonville School parents and community members.  The first is our annual Non-

Homestead Millage renewal.  This is an annual renewal voters have approved for the past 23 years and would generate approximately

$4.4 million dollars of operating revenue for our school district.  Of note, this is not a tax on primary residences and is not a new tax.

Additionally, the State of Michigan assumes all districts levy the full 18 mills. If voters reject the proposal, our district’s state aid is reduced

accordingly.

The second proposal is our Building and Site Sinking Fund.  Effective March of 2017, Public Act 319 expanded a district’s ability to utilize

Building and Site Funds for security and technology.  The House passed the bill in June, 2016 with a vote of 107-1, and the Senate

passed it 36-0 in October, 2016.  Even though Hudsonville has had this millage for the past 25 years, because the legislature expanded

the use, the ballot language identifies it as a new millage.  Of note, both millages will MAINTAIN our citizens’ current millage rate and will

not raise taxes. Previous improvements made as a result of this one mill levy have included additional classrooms to accommodate all

day every day kindergarten, roof repairs, boiler replacements, and land acquisitions.

Official ballot language:

HUDSONVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS

OPERATING MILLAGE RENEWAL PROPOSAL

This proposal will allow the school district to continue to levy the statutory rate of not to exceed 18 mills

on all property, except principal residence and other property exempted by law, required for the

school district to receive its revenue per pupil foundation allowance.

Shall the limitation on the amount of taxes which may be assessed against all property, except principal residence and other property

exempted by law, in Hudsonville Public Schools, Ottawa and Allegan Counties, Michigan, be increased by 18 mills ($18.00 on each

$1,000 of taxable valuation) for the year 2018, to provide funds for operating purposes; the estimate of the revenue the school district will

collect if the millage is approved and levied in 2018 is approximately $4,430,000 (this is a renewal of millage that expired with the 2017 tax

levy)?

HUDSONVILLE PUBLIC SCHOOLS SINKING FUND MILLAGE PROPOSAL

Shall the limitation on the amount of taxes which may be assessed against all property in Hudsonville Public Schools, Ottawa and Allegan

Counties, Michigan, be increased by and the board of education be authorized to levy not to exceed 1 mill ($1.00 on each $1,000 of

taxable valuation) for a period of 5 years, 2018 to 2022, inclusive, to create a sinking fund for the purchase of real estate for sites for, and

the construction or repair of, school buildings, for school security improvements, for the acquisition or upgrading of technology and all

other purposes authorized by law; the estimate of the revenue the school district will collect if the millage is approved and levied in 2018 is

approximately $1,410,000?
