Nobody ever listened to me until they

didn't know who I was.

When I was eighteen I spent one night

silver bubble letters on the side of a

I realised I had to cut my painting time

plate on the bottom of a fuel tank whenI realtsed I could Just copy that style

and make each letter three feet high.

I got home at last and crawled Intobed next to my glrtfriend. I told her I'd

had an epiphany that night and shetold me 10 stop takmg thaI drug cosIt'S bad for your heart.

On a Tuesday night in the summer Itried to paint a tram bridge thaispans Portobello Road in WestLondon with posters showmg therevolutionary leader ehe Guevaragradually dribbling off the page.Every Saturday the marketunderneath the bndge sells eheGuevara t-shirts. handbags. babybibs and button badges. I think Iwas trying 10 make a statementabout the endless recycling of anicon by endlessly recycling an icon.

People seem to think If they dresslike a revolutIonary they don'tactually have to behave like one.

I got up on the bridge about 4am. Itwas qUiet and peaceful until two carsapproached very slowly and parkedon the street. I stopped pasting andwatched from the side of the bridgethrough the bushes. After a fewminutes there was no movement andI figured rt was cool 10 carry on.

I reached the fifth poster when therewas a huge bang and the sound of

splitting wood. One of the cars hadre"ersed back up the street and wason the pavement, wedged In thedoorway of the mobile phone shop.Six small figures in hoods withscarves over their faces ran into thestore throwing everything they couldinto black plastic bags. In less than aminute they were all back In their carswhich screamed down PortobelloRoad beneath me. I stood there withmy mouth hanging open, a bucket inone hand and a sawn-off sweepingbrush in the other. Bemg the onlyyoung male in sportswear withm amile I got the feeling things wouldlook bad for me if 1hung around so Idropped the bucket. climbed thefence and jumped to the street.

The area was full of cameras so Ilowered my head. pulled my hood upand ran all the way to the canal.I Imagined the kids were probably inKilburn by then, lighting up a spllffand saying to each other 'Why wouldsomeone Just paint pictures of arevolutionary when you can actuallybehave like one instead?'

On December 21st the President,disturbed by a small uprising in thewestern city of Timisoara In support of aProtestant Clergyman, was persuadedto address a public rally in Bucharest.

One solitary man In the crowd. Nicaleon, Sick to death with Ceausescuand the dreadful circumstances hecreated for everyone startedshouting in favour of therevolutionaries In Tlmasoara.The crowd around him, obedient tothe last. thought that when heshouted out 'long live Timlsoarar Itwas some new political slogan.

They started chanting It too. It wasonly when he called, ;Down WithCeausescu!' that they realisedsomething wasn't QUIte right. Temfied,Ihey tried 10 force themselves awayfrom him. dropprng the banners theyhad been carrying. In the crush thewooden batons on which the bannerswere held began to snap underfootand women started screaming. Theensuing panic sounded like booing.

The unthinkable was happening.Ceausescu stood there on hisbalcony, ludicrously frozen inuncertainty, his mouth opening andshutting. Even the official camerashook wrth fright. Then the head ofsecurity walked SWiftly acrosss thebalcony towards him and whispered,'They're getting in', It was clearlyaudible on the open microphone andwas broadcast over the whole countryon live natronal radio.

This was the start of the revolution.Withrn a week Ceausescu was dead.

They neverpursued It any further so I went ouland hit It agam in the hope I couldlure the harbour manager out for a fullcustodial sentence this time.

Once upon a time, there was a kingwho ruled a great and gloriousnatIon. Favounte amongst hissubjects was the court pamter ofwhom he was very proud. Everybodyagreed this wizzened old manpainted the greatest pictures m thewhole kingdom and the king wouldspend hours each day gazing atthem In wonder.

However, one day a dirty anddishevelled stranger presented himselfat the court claiming that in fact hewas the greatest painter In the land.The indignant king decreed acompetition would be held betweenthe two artists, confident it wouldteach the vagabond an embarrassinglesson. Within a month they were bothto produce a masterpiece that wouldout do the other.

After thirty days of workJOg fevenshtyday and mght, both artIsts were ready.

They placed their paintings, eachhidden by a cloth. 00 easels in thegreat hall of the castle. As a largecrowd gathered, the king Ofdered thecloth to be pulled first from the courtartlst's easel. Everyone gasped asbefore them was revealed a wonderfuloil painting of a table set with a feast.At its centre was an ornate silver bowlfull of exotic fruits glistening moistly inthe dawn light. As the crowd gazedadmiringly, a sparrow perched high upon the rafters of the hall swoopeddown and hungrily tried to snatch oneof the grapes from the painted bowlonly to hit the canvas and fall downdead with shock at the feet of the king.

'Aha!' exclaimed the king. 'My artisthas produced a painting so

wonderful It has fooled Natureherself, surely you must agree that heis the greatest painter who everIwedl' But the vagabond saId nothingand stared solemnly at hiS feet.'Now, pull the blanket from yourpainting and let us see what youhave for us,' cried the kIng. But thetramp remamed motionless and saIdnothing. GrOWing impatient, the kingstepped forward and reached out tograb the blanket only to freeze inhorror at the last moment.

'You see,' said the tramp quietly.'there is no blanket covering thepainting. This is actually just apainting of a cloth covering apainting. And whereas your famousartist is content to fool Nature, I'vemade the king of the whole countrylook like a clueless little twat'.

When I was nine years old I wasexpelled from school. It was punish­ment for swinging one of myclassmates round and round beforedropping him onto a concrete floor,He was taken away from school byan ambulance that had to pull rightinto the playground and pick him upon a stretcher,

was me who had done It. The onlyother witness was the kid himselfwho didn't regain conciousness for aweek.

I tried many times to explain that Ihadn't done it, but the boys stuck totheir story, Eventually my mum turnedto me and said bitterly that I shouldhave the guts to admit when I waswrong and that it was even moredisgusting when I refused 10 acceptwhat I'd done.

So I shut up after that.

The kid sustamed a fractured skulland some mental problems. Hecouldn't remember how It hadhappened and he didn't return toschool for a long time,

I think I was lucky to learn so youngthat there's no point in behaving your­self. You'll be punished for somethingyou never did anyway. People get itwrong all the time.

Anyone who believes In capitalpunishment should be shot.

After twenty minutes we've reached the part of the bridgevery near the offices and I realise the bloke is at thewindow, cupping his hands to his eyes and squinting oul.He's clocked what's going and opens the window shouting'Hey, Hey!' I wonder if he works for the magistrates courtattached to the police station and start to pack up the kit.

'I want a word With you' he shouts through the gap in thewindow 'About whatT I say, collapSing the brush andstepping back, we're neariy ready to roll.

There's a pause. 'Well, you see. I'm making a documentaryabout street culture and I'd like you to be in It .. .' We burstout laughing and shout in unison 'Fucking Shoreditch,'finish the piece and leave before he has a chance to gethis camera out.

Manifesto

Extract from the diary of LieutenantColonel Mervin Willett Gonin DSO whowas amongst the first British soldiersto arrive at the Nazi death camp

Bergen-Belsen. It was liberated in

Apnl 1945 close to the end of thesecond World War.

I can give no adequate discription ofthe Horror Camp in which my menand myself were to spend the nextmonth of our lives. It was just a barrenwilderness, as bare as a chicken run.Corpses lay everywhere, some in hugepiles, sometimes they lay singly or inpairs where they had fallen.

It took a little time 10 get used to

seeing men women and childencollapse as you walked by them andto restrain oneself from going to theirassistance. One had to get used earlyto the Idea that the individual just didnot count. One knew that five

hundred a day were dying and thatfive hundred a day were going on

dying for weeks before anything we

could do would have the slightesteffect. It was. however. not easy towatch a child choking to death from

diptheria when you knew atracheotomy and nursing would save

it, one saw women drowning in theirown vomit because they were too

weak to turn over, and men eatingworms as they clutched a half loaf ofbread purely because they had had toeat worms to live and now could

scarcely tell the difference.

Piles of corpses. naked and obscene,with a woman too weak to standproping herself against them as she

cooked the food we had given herover an open fire; men and womencrouching down just anywhere in the

open relieving themselves of thedysenlary which was scouring their

bowels, a woman standing starknaked washing herself with some

issue soap in water from a tank inwhich the remains of a child floated.

It was shortly after the British RedCross arrived, though it may have noconnection, that a very large quantity of

lipstick arrived. This was not at all whatwe men wanted, we were screaming for

hundreds and thousands of other thingsand I don't know who asked for lipstick,

I wish so much that I could discoverwho did it, it was the action of genious,sheer unadulterated brilliance. I believenothing did more for those interneesthan the lipstick, Women lay in bed withno sheets and no nightie but withscarlet red lips, you saw them wander·ing about with nothing but a blanketover their shoulders, but with scanetred lips. I saw a woman dead on thepost mortem table and clutched in her

hand was a piece of lipstick. At lastsomeone had done something to makethem individuals again. they were

someone, no longer merely the numbertatooed on the arm. At last they couldtake an interest in their appearance.

That lipstick slarted 10 give them back

their humanity.

spectacular artwork and at least

• Crime against property is not realcrime. People look at an oil

• The time of getting fame for yourname on rts own IS over. Artwori<;that is only about wanting to befamous will never make you

famous. Fame is a by-product of(icing something else. You don't go

to a restaurant and order a meal

because you want to have a shit.
