PBL: POSITIVE BEHAVIOUR FOR LEARNING

Our value for the fortnight is Respect and we are focusing on accountability. Accountability means accepting responsibility for our own actions and behaviours. When we practise accountability, we show our commitment to our team and build trust and respect with those around us.

Respect and accountability in the playground Below are the expectations for our playground this fortnight. The school has recently purchased a large amount of sports equipment for students to use during lunchtime and fruit break including frisbees, balls, and skipping ropes. We want our students to have fun during their break times, however, we need them to understand how to play safely and respect the equipment. Please talk with your children about the expectations for this fortnight.

We are safe when…

we play where a teacher can see us.

we play in the 3-6 forest only when Mr Woudsma or Mrs Azzopardi are supervising.

we take our hat, money and lunch to the playground with us at the start of break times.

we use school equipment correctly.

We are respectful when…

we take care of our belongings and put them in our bag when we are not using them.

we put our rubbish in the bin before we play.

we return our equipment to the correct place when we are finished using it.

we apologise to others if we have hurt them.

We are learners when…

we understand the expectations and follow the rules.

we organise our learning materials and come to school prepared.

we learn from our mistakes and make a better choice next time we are faced with a similar problem.

***Introducing our new PBL Star initiative!*** Each fortnight, a student from each class receives a PBL assembly awards to acknowledge their excellence in citizenship and being a safe, respectful learner at Banksia Road. The recipients of these awards will now be given the opportunity to help teachers in the playground (for the fortnight following their award) to acknowledge other students who are being safe, respectful learners. PBL Stars will be able to award a fellow role-model with one raffle ticket each day that they participate in the duty. It is optional (as we know break times are sacred to our students and the PBL Stars may prefer to just have a good run around with friends!) and peer recognition is such a powerful way to celebrate everything that's amazing about the students at our school!

Special Religious Education

Scripture will restart for most students in Term 3 Wk 1. Unfortunately, we are unable to confirm the return of some of our scripture teachers. Catholic scripture will return to Banksia Rd in 2021.

Class Visits

Last term, I worked shoulder to shoulder with 1T during reading groups. Listening to the students read with expression and intonation was the highlight of my day. Writing with KB about their favourite book Errol written by Zanni Louise, was exciting. Students were learning to use their alphabet chart and record all the sounds that they could hear in the words they wanted to write. Errol was very adventurous. In 6K, Mr Woudsma, Mrs Khassouk and myself, were impressed with student’s ability to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of representing data using a variety of graphs. Students discussed options and were able to articulate their thinking. Team teaching with Mr Woudsma in 4/5H and 5B was another highlight. The students collaborated with one another as they were set the same Stage 3 mathematical challenge as 6K. There were opportunities for guided and explicit instruction from the teachers and experimental and independent learning by the students. Another highlight was my first Arabic lesson with Mrs Wassef. I was very proud of my achievements. With support, I am now able to count to five in Arabic. Last newsletter I shared the wonderful planning 3P were working on to convince the reader of their point of view. This week I was privileged to read their published persuasive writing. Through their writing and their ability to use high modality words with evidence, examples and explanations, they were all able to convince me. The presentation of their work was of high quality. The two stars and a wish feedback that I provided was well received.
