FOREWORD

The occupational analysis-project was conducted by The Instructional MaterialsLaboratory, Trade and Industrial-iaiZatlon, The Ohio State University in con-junction with the State Department of Education, Division of Vocational Educa-tion pursuant to a grant from_theU.S. Office of Education.

i:;The Occupational Analysis project was proposed and conducted to train voca-tional educators in the techniques 'malting a comprehensive occupationalanalysis. Instructors were selected from Agriculture, aus-i-ness-,-tive,srrHome Economics and Trade and Industrial Education to gain experienceindeveloping analysis documents for sixty-one different occupations. Represen-tat-ives-from Business, Industry, Medicine, and Education were involved withthe vocational instructors in conducting the analysis process.

The project was-conducted in three phases., Pnase one involved the planningand develoWie-nts-ot the project strategies.. The analysis process was basedon sound principles of learning and behavior. Phase two was the identifica-tion, selection and orientation of all participants. Thy training and work:-shop sessions constituted the third phase.--Two_r_week workshops were heldduring which teams of vocational instructors conducte-d-an_analysis-of_theoccupations in which they had employment experience. The instructors wereassisted by both occupational consultants and subject matter specialists.

The project resulted in producing one hundred two trained vocational instruc-tors capable of conducting and assisting in a comprehensive analysis ofvarious occupations. Occupational analysis data were generated for sixty-oneoccupations. The analysis included statement of the various tasks performedin each occupation. For each task the following items were identified:tools and equipment; procedural knowledge; safety knowledge; concepts andskills of mathematics, science and communication needed for successful per-formance in the occupation. The analysis data provided a basis for generatinginstructional materials, course outlines, student performance objectives, criterion measures as well as identifying specific supporting skills andknowledge in the academic subject areas,

PREFACE

The following occupational analysis of the bank teller occupation is a broad defini-tion of the teller function. A teller in a small bank would be 1-quired to performall of the duties listed. This can be contrasted with a teller in a large metropol-itan bank, who would perform a more specialized function, and whose work day may con-sist of performing as few as two of the duties listed. It is felt that at least anunderstanding of the tasks required to perform all of the duties listed is -iecessaryfor anyone performing the teller function, regardless of the size of the institutionin which he/she works.

ACKNOWLEDGMENT

We wish to acknowledge the valuable assistance rendered by the followingsubject matter specialists. They provided input to the vocational instruc-tors in identifying related skills and concepts of each respective subjectmatter area and served as training assistants in the analysis process duringthe two-week workshops.
