Rana, who was a co-accusedin the Mumbai attacks withDavid Headley, was stunned tohear the verdict. His lawyerssaid they would appeal againstthe verdict as there was an “er-ror” in the trial.

Rana’s attorney Patrick Ble-gan said he would file post-trial motions that there was notenough evidence to convict himand that there was an error inthe trial.

“Each of the count, for whichRana has been convicted, car-ries a maximum imprisonmentof 15 years. Because the juryfound no death resulting forthe final count 12 (providingmaterial support to LeT) thereis no maximum of life sentence.Maximum is 15 (years) for eachcount,” Blegan said.

He said the government em-phasised on the secretly tapedcar conversation between Ranaand Headley, the star witnessduring the trial. He said thereis a huge contradiction in theverdict as LeT is primarily in-volved in Mumbai and not inDenmark.

“But the Government’s evi-dence was that at least Lashkarwas also involved in Denmarkplot for a short period of time.Sound that the jury agreed tothat,” he said.

“Obviously we are extremelydisappointed. We believe inRana. We believe he was notguilty. The jury came to anotherdecision. We respect their de-cision, but we think they got itwrong,” Blegan said.

The verdict came nearly threeweeks of trial of Rana at theChicago court.

“One of the big issues couldbe whether these (sentences)could be run consecutively. Thatis something that could be partof the motion,” said CharlesSwift, Rana’s other attorney.

“We will argue that (to runthe two sentences consecutive-ly) because they involve exactsame conduct but it will be upto the judge,” he said.

Prosecutors alleged Rana, amilitary doctor-turned-businessman, was aware of the

Mumbai attacks and was incontact with the terror groupsand their leaders in Pakistan.

Rana’s attorney, on the otherhand, pleaded not guilty andsaid that Pakistani-AmericanHeadley, an all time liar, hadfooled him. The judge orderedthe defence to file post-trial mo-tions by August 15.

Headley had entered into aplea bargain with US authoritiesto testify against other suspectsin order to avoid the deathpenalty and being extraditedto India, Pakistan and Den-mark.

Blegan said, “We do notknow what the jury was think-ing.” He said the jury decidedthat there was no death involveddue to Rana providing materialsupport to LeT.

“This is a split verdict. Mum-bai part of the verdict is verysignificant as jury did not findhim guilty in the terrorists at-tacks,” he said.

Those present in the courtroom were US attorney PatrickFitzgerald and assistant attor-ney Daniel Collins and VickyPeters, defence attorney Blegen,Rana’s wife Samraz Rana theirtwo daughters and mother ofSamraz. Blegan and Rana fam-ily members looked tense andcrestfallen.

“The message should be clearto all those who help terrorists? we will bring to justice allthose who seek to facilitate vi-olence,” said Fitzgerald, US At-torney for the Northern Districtof Illinois.

Fitzgerald, however said, “Weare disappointed in the notguilty verdict on the Mumbaiattacks.”

“I do not know, the govern-ment had the burden of proof,”he said when asked what wentwrong on the 26/11 charges thatkilled 166 people, including sixAmericans.

“We put our evidence for-ward and the jury found thatwe did not meet the burden (ofproof) there. But they did findwe made our burden provingmaterial support to Lashkarand they found that we metour burden with regard to attackon Denmark,” he added. PTI

Bangalore: Prime Minister Man-mohan Singh behaves like a CEOof a company working at the be-hest of owners Gandhi family, alleged BJP national general sec-retary and party chief spokesmanRavishankar Prasad.

The UPA-2 which met 20 daysago after completing two yearsin office, declared that strongaction would be taken againstcorruption. There could be noth-ing more ironical than this as itis a hollow declaration, he said.

The UPA government hasfailed in taking action againstthis conspiracy of silence whichwas evident when the countrywas being looted in the 2G spec-trum, CommonWealth Games,Adarsh Housing Society andblack money kept in Swiss banks.

Because of the pressure fromthe BJP and vigilant media andstrict monitoring by the Supreme

Court, the Manmohan Singh hastaken action. The governmentcannot claim any credit for itsanti-corruption measures. In-stead of taking action, he hadgiven a certificate of innocenceto some of them. In October 2010,the Prime Minister had said thentelecommunications minister ARaja was innocent. It is evidentthat the Prime Minister haspresided over a most corruptgovernment since Independence. It lack transparency, there is cor-ruption at high level, there areno checks and balances andthere is a virtual collapse of thesystem where scandals are be-coming the order of the day, healleged.

On the raid against BabaRamdev and Ramlila Maidan inNew Delhi, he said, “By resortingto mindless lathicharge and tear-gass shelling against people whowere sleeping in a closed enclo-sure, the police and the admin-

istration tried to cause the max-imum damage. It is the most un-democratic repression and wasresorted to only because peacefuldemonstrators were seekingstrong action to bring back blackmoney and the corrupt.

“The Prime Minister says therewas no alternative but to takeaction. This is the most shameful

manner in which such atrocityhas been justified, while SoniaGandhi and Rahul Gandhi havemaintained conspicuous si-lence,” he said.

“A lot of skeletons will tumbleout of their own closet If thegovernment agrees to get blackmoney back into the country. That is the reason the govern-ment is hesitating,” he alleged.

The BJP government thorough-ly condemns the undemocraticand authoritarian behaviour ofthe government. We will continueto expose corruption within thegovernment, which has lost allmoral authority to govern thiscountry. The BJP will take up amass awakening programme, in-cluding nation-wide protests andpublic meetings from June 24 to26. It is senior BJP leader L KAdvani who has raised the issueof bringing black money backinto the country in 2009 itself,he said.

Prasad told Yed-dyurappa firmly that no decisionshould be taken without the con-sent of the party high command, which was accepted by the chiefminister. Prasad said the partycentral core committee woulddiscuss the issues concerningthe state, before they could be

implemented, the sources said. Yeddyurappa told Prasad that

he has adequate numbers in theministry and any exercise atreshuffle would lead to a lot ofheartburn among the aspirants.Nevertheless, aspirants havebeen making a beeline to theresidences of chief minister andstate party president, seekingthemselves ministerial berths.

VERDICT IN RANA CASE NOT A SETBACK: INDIA

New Delhi: The government to-day said the verdict in theTahawwur Rana case in a UScourt, holding the Pakistani-Canadian not guilty for the Mum-bai attacks, is not a setback asIndia does not rely overtly onprosecution of terror suspects inother countries.

“I do not see it as a setback asour case (India) is still under in-vestigation,” secretary, internalsecurity in the ministry of homeaffairs, U K Bansal, said here.Bansal said, “Prosecution in In-dia against Rana and his co-ac-cused David Headley dependson our own investigations whichare being done by Indian inves-tigating agencies.

“In our handling of terrorismin India, we do not rely overtlyon prosecution in other countries. We have to rely on our ownstrength,” he said.

Bansal said the governmentwill go to the court against the26/11 accused with its own in-vestigation.

“The issue is still under in-vestigation. When the probe isover, we will produce the evi-dence in the court,” he said.

Bansal said whenever any

probe agency pursues a case incourt it always hope that it willsucceed.

Rana was acquitted by a Chica-go court on charges of plottingthe Mumbai attacks but wasfound guilty of supporting Pak-istan-based terror group LeT andplanning a strike in Denmark.

The National InvestigationAgency is likely to file a chargesheet against Headley and Ranain the 26/11 case and the probeis currently going on.

Error in trial; we will appealagainst verdict: Attorneys

Chicago: Attorneys of Pakistani-Canadian Tahawwur HussainRana, who was convicted todayby a US court for providing ma-terial support to LeT and helpinga terror plot in Denmark, saidthey would appeal against theverdict as there was an error inthe trial.

Rana’s attorney Patrick Blegan said he would file post-trial motions that there was notenough evidence to convict himand that there was an error inthe trial.

The jury of a Chicago courtfound Rana, 50, guilty of pro-viding material support to Pak-istan-based LeT and helping aterror plot in Denmark. He, how-ever, was acquitted by the courton charges of abetting Mumbaiterror attacks.

“Each of the count, for whichRana has been convicted, carriesa maximum imprisonment of 15years. Because the jury found

no death resulting for the finalcount 12 (providing material sup-port to LeT) there is no maximumof life sentence. Maximum is 15(years) for each count,” Blegansaid.

He said the government em-phasised on the secretly tapedcar conversation between Ranaand David Coleman Headley, aco-accused in the Mumbai attackcase.

Blegan said there is a hugecontradiction in the verdict asLeT is primarily involved in Mum-bai and not in Denmark.

“But the government’s evi-dence was that at least Lashkarwas also involved in Denmarkplot for a short period of time.Sound that the jury agreed tothat,” he said.

“Obviously we are extremelydisappointed. We believe in MrRana. We believe he was notguilty. The jury came to anotherdecision. We respect their deci-

sion, but we think they got itwrong,” Blegan said.

“One of the big issues couldbe weather these (sentences)could be run consecutively. Thatis something that could be partof the motion,” said CharlesSwift, Rana’s other attorney.

“We will argue that (to runthe two sentences consecutively)because they involve exact sameconduct but it will be up to thejudge,” he said.

Blegan said count 12 relatedto Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) couldhave involved Mumbai, jury de-cided that it didn’t.

“It is our view that it did notbecause no death resulted fromthis conduct of providing mate-rial support to LeT,” he said.

Blegan said “yes” when askedif he is going to appeals first.

“We have 60 days to file posttrial motions. Those are the mo-tions attacking the verdict,” hesaid.

Your friendlist cannotbe morethan 150

London: You may boast of having an impressivelist of friends on social networking sites likeFacebook and Orkut, but a new study suggests thatyour brain can’t handle more than 150 friends.

Researchers, led by Prof Robin Dunbar of at Ox-ford University, have carried out the study and con-cluded human beings cannot develop close bondswith more than 150 people, the ‘Daily Mail’ re-ported.

Indeed, so intense has been Prof Dunbar’s re-search of the magic number that it has earned hima measure of fame.

It is now referred to as “Dunbar’s Number”, aterm ironically coined on Facebook among fans ofhis work.

“There was a discussion by people saying, ‘I’vegot too many friends -- I don’t know who half thesepeople are’.

Somebody apparently said, ‘Look, there’s thisguy in England who says you can’t have more than150’,” Prof Dunbar said.

He has researched societies and businessesaround the world and has found that 150 is the op-timum group for social cohesion and interaction.

From African and Native American tribes to suc-cessful companies, a typical community is about150 people.

The reason 150 is the optimal number for a com-munity comes from our primate ancestors, ac-cording to Prof Dunbar.

Dunbar’s Number, of course, does face certainmodern day complications.

He said: “You grow up somewhere, you go toschool on the other side of the country, you get ajob, you go to Europe for a bit – it’s much harderfor us to keep those relationships working andgood when they’re that distributed.”

As for the workplace, the study has shown thatin companies smaller than 500 people “there’s avery strong tendency for colleagues also to be yourfriends”. PTI

New male infertility test

may ʻbring hopeto millionsʼ

London: A groundbreaking new test for male in-fertility, which will save time, money and heartachefor couples around the world, has been developedby Northern Ireland’s Queen’s University Belfast.

The medical breakthrough, known as theSpermComet, has resulted from more than adecade’s research by Professor Sheena Lewis, wholeads the Reproductive Medicine research groupat Queen’s.

The SpermComet provides unique informationthat no other test offers.

By measuring damaged DNA in individualsperm, it can predict the success of infertility treat-ments and fast-track couples to the treatment mostlikely to succeed, leading to significantly re-duced waiting times and improved chances of con-ception.

Lewis said according to a Belfast statement:“One in six couples has difficulty in having a fam-ily. In 40 percent of cases, the problems are relatedto the man. Until now, there have been few ac-curate ways of measuring a man’s fertility.”

“Traditionally, the diagnosis of male infertili-ty has relied on semen analysis. This provides thebasic information on which fertility specialistsbase their initial diagnosis.”

“However, its clinical value in predicting malefertility or success with infertility treatment is lim-ited, particularly if the semen analysis results arenormal,” he added.

“The SpermComet test is so called because itlooks just like a comet in the sky. The head of the‘Comet’ is undamaged DNA and the tail is dam-aged DNA.

“Good quality sperm DNA is closely associat-ed with getting pregnant and having a healthybaby, and the SpermComet Test is the most sen-sitive test available for sperm DNA testing,” con-cluded Lewis.

Lewis, in partnership with Queen’s venturespinout company, QUBIS, has now set up a newcompany to market the test, which is already avail-able through a number of fertility clinics inBritain. IANS

Scientists manage to ʻtrapʼ anti‑matterLondon: In a technical feat, physicistshave trapped and stored “antihydro-gen atoms” for a record 16 minutes, which they claim may pave the wayfor deeper insights into the mysteriesof anti-matter.

Particles and anti-particles anni-hilate each other in a small flash of en-ergy when they collide. At the momentof Big Bang, nearly 14 billion yearsago, matter and anti-matter arethought to have existed in equalquantities.

If that balance had persisted, theobservable Universe we inhabit wouldnever have come into being. And, forunknown reasons nature seemed tohave a slight preference for matter, and today anti-matter is rare. Thisasymmetry remains one of the great-est riddles in particle physics.

But ongoing low-energy experi-ments with hydrogen atoms could bea key step toward solving it, say thescientists.

“We can keep the antihydrogenatoms trapped for 1,000 seconds. This is long enough to begin to studythem – even with the small numberthat we can catch so far,” said JeffreyHangst, spokesman for the ALPHAteam conducting tests at the EuropeanOrganisation for Nuclear Researchin Geneva. In the study, published inthe ‘Nature Physics’, the physicists re-

port trapping some 300 antiatoms.They used CERN’s high-energy ac-

celerator to create antihydrogen atomsand chilled them to near-zero tem-peratures.

The aim is to use laser and mi-crowave spectroscopy to comparethe immobilised particles to their hy-drogen counterparts.

The same team succeeded last yearin trapping dozens of anti-matteratoms and holding them in place fora fraction of a second, a world first atthe time. But that was not long enough

for the excitable particles to settle intothe stable “ground” state needed forprecise measurements.

The new benchmark extended thisstorage time 5,000 fold, making it pos-sible to carry out crucial experiments,‘The Daily Telegraph’ reported.

The physicists will now look for “vi-olations” or discrepancies in some-thing called the charge-parity-time re-versal (CPT) symmetry. Measurementsof trapped antihydrogen are due to getunderway shortly, and could yield re-sults before the end of the year. PTI

Giving in totemptation

may be goodLondon: Can’t resist your temp-tation for that last piece of cakeor chocolate? Well, it’s good foryou and may keep you happy, sayscientists.

A study of British womenfound that those who gave in totemptation on a regular basiswere much happier than thosewho restrained themselves.

The researchers said self-reg-ulation makes people more in-clined to feel dissatisfied – prov-ing the old adage that a little ofwhat you fancy really does do yougood, the Daily Mail reported.

Those who took part in the sur-vey for a food company saidshopping over the budget, sweettreats and browsing the internetat work as their pick-me-ups.

Neuroscientist Dr Jack Lewis, who led the study, said: “There isa body of evidence suggestingthat resisting temptation actual-ly makes us angry.”

“Most things are fine in mod-eration, and giving in to our rel-atively innocent urges – particu-larly when times are tough – is agreat way to reward ourselves.”

The survey of 2,000 women byOnePoll for ‘Gu Puds’ found thatalmost 90% gave in to urges atleast some of the time, while al-most 60% did so once a day. Ofthose who indulged daily, aroundtwo thirds reported feeling guiltyfor hours afterwards. PTI

Good mannersare at the heartof good health

London: People with good man-ners, whether at office or home, are more than twice likely tohave a good health, a study hasfound.

Those who are tidy and or-ganised are found to have betterpersonal hygiene than morechaotic people, the Daily Ex-press reported.

The study said well-manneredpeople tend to maintain betterhygiene and take better care oftheir well-being and health. As aresult, they suffer less from coldsand cases of diarrhoea and aretwo-and-a-half times more like-ly to be in good health thanthose with poor manners.

Elderly people look after theirhealth more than the young peo-ple and also have better manners, states the study conducted byDettol and the London School ofHygiene and Tropical Medicine.

John Oxford, chairman of theHygiene Council and professor ofvirology at Barts and the LondonSchool of Medicine and Den-tistry, said: “Everyone canchange their behaviour and helpto break the chain of infection.Good manners are also at theheart of it – being aware and

thinking how our behaviour af-fects us and those around us.”

“We’re not powerless againstinfectious disease – everyonecan contribute through simplehygiene measures such as wash-ing our hands.”

It also states the homemakershave the highest levels of per-sonal and household hygiene, while office workers and stu-dents have the worst. Womenalso tend to be more hygienicthan men. IANS

The craft left its moon orbit at 5.10 pm(China time) and will take about 85 days toreach outer space, Xinhua quoted the stateadministration of science, technology andindustry for national defence (SASTIND)as stating.

The orbiter had completed all its taskswithin its designed life span of six monthsby April 1. Scientists then decided it wouldcarry out additional exploratory tasks as itstill had fuel in reserve.

According to the SASTIND, travellinginto outer space from the moon’s orbit isthe most important task among five addi-tional ones.

“It’s the first time in the world for a satel-lite to be set off from the moon in remoteouter space,” said Zhou Jianliang, a deputychief engineer at the Beijing AerospaceControl Centre (BACC).

The huge 2,000 pound (900 kg) beastthen stood over the unconscious farmer, snorting and mauling his limp body withits hooves.

Terrified Tom climbed onto the tractorfor safety, but he was faced with a dilemma. His father Andrew, 46, had forbidden himto drive the tractor and he’s not a boy tobreak the rules.

But Tom’s instincts took over and heturned the key to drive slowly towards hisdad lying under the bull. He carefully aimedfor the animal worried he might crush hisunconscious father under the tractor’s giantwheels.

He managed to move the bull away fromhis father and ran back to the farmhousecalling his mother Amanda.

Amanda dialled for help and finally aRoyal Air Force rescue helicopter flew tothe field to take barely alive Andrew tohospital.

He suffered 10 broken ribs and severeinternal injuries from where the chargingbull hit him.

But Andrew survived and was allowedhome yesterday two weeks after being hitby the bull.

Apple a day keeps your body tonedLondon: An apple a day keepsthe doctor away, so goes the oldsaying. Now, researchers claimto have found out the exact rea-son – the fruit helps keep one’sbody toned and slender by boost-ing muscles and fighting theflab.

A new study by the Universityof Iowa has found that ursolicacid – a substance found in thepeel – has natural body buildingqualities and could help peoplekeep a toned, slender body. And,it could even help with diabetes.

In experiments, the re-searchers discovered that itboosts muscle growth by up to15 per cent and reduces bodyfat by more than a half. It alsohas health giving properties –reducing blood sugar levels, cho-

lesterol and harmful fat-ty acids, ‘The Daily Tele-graph’ reported.

Lead researcherChristopher Adams saidthe substance could beespecially useful in theelderly who naturallylose body muscle, known as atrophy.

He said: “The old say-ing goes that ‘an applea day keeps the doctoraway’. Muscle atrophycauses big problems.

It’s also very common– it affects most peopleat some point in theirlives, during illness orageing. But, there’s nom e d i c i n e for it.

“We studied muscle gene activityin people with atrophy and used thatinformation to find chemicals thatmight block atrophy.

One of those chemicals was espe-cially interesting. It’s called ursolicacid and it’s particularly concentratedin apple peels.”

The study, published in the ‘CellMetabolism’ journal, showed that ur-solic acid reduced muscle wasting inmice. The researchers believe the sub-stance works by reprogramming genesthat cause muscle wasting and fatbuild up.

“Interestingly, although ursolic acidincreased muscle weight in mice, itdid not increase total body weight, and further investigation showed thatmice fed ursolic acid had less bodyfat than mice that were not fed thecompound,” he said. IANS

New technique to detect onset of blindness!

Washington: Scientists have de-veloped a new technique whichthey claim will help detecthealthy people at risk of devel-oping age-related macular de-generation (AMD), one of theleading causes of blindnessworldwide.

Using standard clinical tech-niques, the detection of AMDhas previously not been possiblein the disease’s early stages. Doc-tors tend to diagnose AMD oncesmall changes become visible atthe back of a patient’s eye. How-ever, degeneration begins manyyears before these clinical signsappear.

Now, a team at QueenslandUniversity of Technology, led byeye specialist Dr Beatrix Feigl, has come up with the “dim lightvision” test which it says is verysensitive to early changes in aperson’s vision.

“We can detect subclinical vi-sual impairment in healthy par-ticipants genetically at risk forAMD. In the future we hope thistest might be utilised by oph-

thalmologists and optometriststo identify patients with a highgenetic risk of developing AMDbut without any clinical signs ofdisease.

“This would enable specialiststo advise patients on lifestylechanges which may delay diseaseonset and reduce its severity,”she said.

Dr Feigl said that genetic pre-disposition accounted for aroundhalf the cases of AMD. However, lifestyle risk factors for AMD,which could be controlled by apatient, included poor diet, lackof exercise and smoking.

“We know that lifestylechanges can decrease a person’schance of getting worse formsof the disease,” she said.

The next phase of the team’sresearch will be a longitudinalstudy, following up with peoplewho took part in this study andwho were shown to have earlychanges to their vision. “We willfollow them up and see if theirvision deteriorates over time,”she said. PTI

Your name holds alot for you: ScientistsWashington: What’s in a name?Well, it can tell a lot about youand could even influence whatothers think about you.

A new study of the meaningsencoded in people’s names foundthat people judge how smart aperson is based solely on name.

“The name you give your kidis sort of a proxy for a wholebunch of things in our culture,”study researcher John Waggonerof Bloomberg University of Penn-sylvania was quoted as sayingby ‘LiveScience’.

Names have been linked tomany life choices, including whatkind of work people do and howthey donate to charity.

Past studies have shown thatwhat people name their childrenvaries by their socioeconomicstatus and education level.

Waggoner and his colleagueswondered if people’s names af-fect what others expect of them.

They recruited a group of 89

undergraduate students, abouthalf of whom were prospectiveteachers, and asked them toguess on a scale of 1 to 10 (notvery successful to very successful)how they thought a student witha certain name would performacademically.

The participants tended tojudge those with names thathave been correlated with lowermaternal education and socioe-conomic status as low educa-tional achievers, compared withthe possessors of higher-status

names.“What future teachers expect

is that ‘Cody’ will do a lot worsein school, relatively, than ‘Ben-jamin and Samuel’,” Waggonersaid. “The more things you havegoing for you, the better peopleexpect you to do.”

The lowest-ranked names were‘Travis’, with an average of 5.55on the scale, and Amber, with a5.74. The highest rankers were‘Katherine’ with a 7.42 and‘Samuel’ with a 7.20.

The two-point gap betweenthe highest and lowest rankednames equates to a 20 per centdifference in perceived academicsuccess, the researchers said.

But the researchers said theirwork is still lacking on how thiscorrelates to actual academicsuccess, though other studieshave associated low maternaleducation and socioeconomicstatus with lower educationalsuccess. PTI

Eating at wrongtime? Your

fertility may be hitWashington: Dieticians often advise against late-night dinner as it may lead to weight gain. Now, anew study, led by an Indian-origin scientist, has foundthat wrong time eating may also cause reduced fertility,at least in the case of fruit flies.

Researchers at the Perelman School of Medicine atthe University of Pennsylvania found that feedingfruit flies at the wrong time led to a defect in their re-productive ability.

The finding, published in the journal Cell Metabolism, however, may not hold true for humans and any po-tential link between diet and reproduction needsfurther research, Amita Sehgal, a neuroscience professorwho led the research, said.

“I would not say eating at the wrong time of theday makes people less fertile, though that is the im-plication,” said Sehgal.

“I would say that eating at the wrong time of theday has deleterious consequences for physiology.”

Many aspects of animal biology cycle over thecourse of a day. Sleep and wakefulness, activity andrest, body temperature, and more, all fluctuate in apattern called a circadian rhythm. Disruption of theserhythms has been shown to negatively affect physiol-ogy.

Shift workers, for instance, often suffer from psy-chological and metabolic issues that colleagues onnormal hours do not, the researchers said.

In 2008, Sehgal’s team discovered that the fruit flyequivalent of the liver, called the fat body, has its ownclock, which controls eating and food storage.

In the current study, they wanted to know whatwould happen if the fat body clock became desyn-chronized from the master clock in the brain.

First, she and her team found out which fly genesare controlled specifically by the fat body clock. Usinggene chip microarrays, they identified 81 genes relatedto lipid and carbohydrate metabolism, the immunesystem, and reproduction that fit those criteria.

Next, they tried to decouple the fat body and centralclocks by keeping the flies in constant darkness (toeliminate effects of light on these clocks) and feedingthem at times when they don’t normally eat.

They found the two clocks could be desynchronised:disrupting the creatures’ feeding cycles altered thecycling of genes controlled by the fat-body clock, butnot those regulated by the central clock itself itself.

Finally, the researchers addressed the functionalconsequences of this desynchronization, by countingthe number of eggs the flies laid under different con-ditions. Flies fed at the “right” time of the day depositedabout 8 eggs per day, compared to about 5 when theyfed at the “wrong” time. The next task, they said, is tofinding the molecular mechanism that controls thisphenomenon. And more importantly, to find whetherthis effect is restricted to fruit flies or it also occurs inhigher organisms, including humans. PTI

IAEA reports Syria to UN over N‑allegationsVienna: The UN atomic watchdog votedtoday to report Syria to the United Na-tions Security Council over allegationsit built an undeclared nuclear reactorthat was then destroyed by Israelibombs, diplomats said.

At a closed-door meeting of the 35-member board of governors of the In-ternational Atomic Energy Agency, 17countries voted in favour of a corre-sponding resolution by the United Statesand six against, diplomats attendingthe meeting said.

Azerbaijan, China, Ecuador, Pakistan,Russia and Venezuela all voted “no”.

There were 11 abstentions, includingArgentina, Brazil, Chile, India, SouthAfrica and Peru, and one country –Mongolia – was absent from the vote, the diplomats said.

The IAEA will not officially publishthe outcome of the vote given the con-fidential nature of the deliberations.

Washington and its Western allieshad asked the IAEA’s governing bodyto find Syria in “non-compliance” withits international obligations and reportit to the Security Council in New York.

The last time the IAEA did so was inthe case of Iran in February 2006.

Washington alleges that Syria wasbuilding an undeclared nuclear reactorat a remote desert site called Dair Alzourwith North Korea’s help until the sitewas bombed by Israeli planes in Sep-tember 2007.

The IAEA began investigating the al-legations in June 2008, but Syria hasrefused to cooperate all along and, withthe exception of a one-off visit, has notallowed UN inspectors to Dair Alzour or related sites to verify the US claims. AFP

ʻJupiter robbed Mars of massto build its asteroid beltʼ

London: Gas giant Jupiter mayhave robbed the mass of itsneighbouring planet Mars andbuilt the strange icy rocky aster-oid belt billions of years agowhen the solar system was form-ing, a new study has suggested.

The unexpectedly smaller sizeof Mars and the strange asteroidbelt located between the orbitsof the red planet and its neigh-bour Jupiter have long puzzledscientists. Now, an internationalteam of scientists claimed tohave found an explanation bycarrying out computer simula-tions of the early solar system.

Their research showed thatsome 4.6 billion years ago whenthe solar system was forming,Jupiter went wandering in to-wards the Sun, on the way drag-ging comets from beyond theasteroid belt as it moved inwardstowards Mars. It then moved outagain to gravitate towards an-other gas giant, Saturn, as itformed, this time dragging dryrocks from inside the belt as itmoved back outwards again.

All this material would other-wise have coalesced with Mars, giving it water in abundance andthe mass to retain it with itsgravitational pull. Instead it end-ed up as the small, dry and prob-ably dead planet as seen today, the Daily Mail reported.

The team, led by Dr KevinWalsh of the Southwest ResearchInstitute in San Antonio, foundhow an infant Jupiter may havemigrated to within 1.5 astronom-ical units (AU — the distancefrom the Sun to the Earth) of theSun, stripping a lot of materialfrom the region and essentiallystarving Mars of materials.

“If Jupiter had moved inwardsfrom its birthplace down to 1.5AU from the Sun, and thenturned around when Saturnformed as other models suggest, eventually migrating outwardstowards its current location, itwould have truncated the dis-tribution of solids in the innersolar system at about 1 AU andexplained the small mass ofMars,” said Dr Walsh.

He said: “The problem waswhether the inward and outward

migration of Jupiter through the2 to 4 AU region could be com-patible with the existence of theasteroid belt today, in this sameregion. So, we started to do ahuge number of simulations.

“The result was fantastic. Oursimulations not only showedthat the migration of Jupiter wasconsistent with the existence ofthe asteroid belt, but also ex-plained properties of the beltnever understood before.”

The asteroid belt is populatedwith two very different types ofrubble, very dry bodies as wellas water-rich orbs.

Water is too volatile to havebeen present at Earth’s formationand must have been subsequent-ly delivered from outer, colderparts of the Solar System, saidthe researchers who believe thatwater was probably delivered byplanetoids and comets thrownout of the asteroid belt by Jupiter.

Dr Walsh and his team, whodetailed their findings in thejournal Nature, found that thepassage of Jupiter depleted andthen re-populated the asteroidbelt region with inner-belt bodiesoriginating between 1 and 3 AUas well as outer-belt bodies orig-inating between and beyond thegiant planets, producing the sig-nificant compositional differ-ences existing today. Microsoft loses Word

patent battleToronto: Software giant Microsoftfinally lost its battle over Wordpatent with Toronto’s i4i Inc.yesterday.

Rejecting Microsoft’s appeal, the US Supreme Court upheldthe 2009 lower court orderagainst Microsoft to pay $290million in damages to the Torontofirm for infringing its patent.

The Canadian company hadtaken the software giant to courtin the US in 2007 over violationsof its patent in Word applicationsand won the case and got $290million in damages in December2009.

In its lawsuit, i4i had claimedthat the world’s biggest softwarecompany infringed on a patentgranted to it in 1998.

The patent pertained to i4i’stechnology that can open docu-ments using the XML computerprogramming language and ma-nipulate complex data in elec-tronic documents.

The technology allows usersto sort out and manage tons ofinformation by turning complexdocuments into more accessibledatabases.

The Toronto company claimedthat Microsoft violated its patentwhen it created Word 2003 and

Word 2007 software.Later in 2009, the US court of

appeals upheld the lower courtorder banning Microsoft fromselling its patent-infringing Wordprocessing software from January2010.

Though Microsoft compliedwith the court order by stoppingselling versions of Word withthe disputed technology fromthat date, it challenged the verdictin the US supreme court in Au-gust last year, arguing that thecurrent system is disproportion-ately loaded in favor of patentholders.

i4i chairman Loudon Owencalled Thursday’s court decision“extremely gratifying’’ for hissmall firm.

“It has also become one ofthe most important business-law cases decided by theSupreme Court in decades,’’ hetold the local media. IANS

“One such trip is not likely toresolve such a major and com-

plex problem like the Libyanconflict,” a foreign ministry of-ficial said.

“Russia has always proceededfrom the position that the conflictshould be resolved by political-diplomatic means without theuse of external influence and ofcourse the use of force,” he said.

“We have continually calledon, and still call on, all sides inthe conflict to comply with (UN)resolutions 1970 and 1973,” headded.

UN Security Council Resolu-tion 1970, passed in February, imposed sanctions on Gaddafiand his family, while Resolution1973 authorized a no-fly zoneover Libya and the use of “allnecessary measures” to protectcivilians. IANS
