Sriramulu, who resigned from MLA’s position yesterday, was here to offer prayers to Goddess Chamundeshwari today. He said the CBI should have served a notice on Reddy before arresting him. “The Congress has been nurs- ing a grudge against the Reddy brothers as we have been able to root out that party from Bellary by hoisting the BJP flag. Bellary district was once a stronghold of the Congress. We have demol- ished their fort.” He said, “The CBI had not done any inquiry against Reddy, nor had they summoned him for questioning. They descended on his residence all of a sudden this morning and arrested him. Reddy was also responsible for the BJP to come to power in the state. The Congress has not been able to stomach that and has set the CBI on Reddy’s heels.” “The police have committed a lot of atrocities against us. We are prominent mine owners. Since the UPA government itself is corrupt, it does not have any moral right to speak against cor- ruption,” he added. “My friend Janardhana Reddy is a prompt man. He has not vi- olated any norms, nor has he changed the borders between Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh for mining activities,” he said. “We are not scared. We are ready to face any legal battle. But they are yet to appear before the court in person as they fear arrest. Though they complained that their health did not permit them to attend, the court ordered them to appear before it today. Advocate Vinod Kumar had filed the case before the Lokayuk- ta on the involvement of Ku- maraswamy in Jantakal and Vish- wabharati housing scandals while he was the chief minister. In the Vishwabharati case, the JD(S) state president had re- turned a residential site, citing Vaastu problems and had got another site allotted in the name of Anita’s aunt. The Lokayukta court rejected the anticipatory bail applica- tions of the couple. The Kar- nataka High Court too had re- jected their plea for quashing of proceedings by the Lokayukta court against them. He was also slapped with the prevention of corruption, forest acts and cheating cases. His house ‘Parijata’ near Basavesh- wara Circle in Bangalore and ‘Kutira’ on Siraguppa Road at Bellary were raided in the wee hours today. Sources told Ban- galore Beat that the CBI sleuths knocked on the doors of the billionaire at 2.40 am. There was a scuffle between Janardhana Reddy and CBI officials, who put hand- cuffs on the strongman of Bellary. The CBI team was led by DIG Laksh- minaraya Reddy. The CBI had obtained required permission from the CBI special court at Nampalli on Saturday to raid Reddy’s properties. They left Hyder- abad around 10 last night and reached Bellary early in the morning. The team had 10 members. Soon after the arrest, Reddy was taken to Nampalli, where the CBI court is situated, by road. As one of the rooms at Parijata was locked, the CBI officials got locksmiths from Shivajinagar to unlock the doors. While that was on, the CBI officials seized Reddy’s favourite helicopter, named Rukmini, at Bellary. They also re- covered 3 kg gold, Rs 1.5 crore cash, lap- tops containing crucial information, ledgers and documents of properties worth several crores. Along with Janardhana Reddy, OMC managing director Srinivasa Reddy too was arrested. From his residence, Rs 3 crore cash, gold and other ornaments, property documents were recovered. The arrests led to widespread protests by the Reddy supporters at Bellary. They blocked roads, burnt tyres on the road and forcibly shut some of the busi- ness establishments in the mining town. Janardhana Reddy was taken to Nam- palli via Kurnool and Guntakal. He may be immediately put behind the bars. Reddy’s lawyers could apply for bail. But taking the recent precedents into consideration, it is unlikely that he would get bail. Sources said lawyer Ra- machandra Reddy has been taken to Hy- derabad along with Janardhana Reddy’s kin Somashekara Reddy to represent the case at the CBI special court. Chief minister D V Sadananda Gow- da, who was at Hubli, said, “We cannot say that Janardhana Reddy is guilty just because his name has been men- tioned in the illegal mining report. He is only an accused. Let the courts decide the future course of action.” Puzzled by media men, Gowda said he would not like to comment on Ja- nardhana Reddy’s arrest. “However, we are not justifying his arrest.” Opposition leader in the assembly Sid- daramaiah said, “Janardhana Reddy had made lot of money through illegal mining in the name of Obulapuram Mining Company. He was carrying on mining activities in the Karnataka part of the forests too. His name was men- tioned in the Lokayuka report. The offi- cials are going in the right direction and we expected this. Reddys had said that their mining activities were limited to Andhra Pradesh and they did not have any interests in Karntaka. But that is not true. Resources worth thousands of crores have been looted by them. We had been consistently demanding a CBI en- quiry for a long time. That is the point we stressed upon when we went on a pa- dayatra from Bangalore to Bellary.” Congress state president G Paramesh- wara said, “We had been stating for a long time that Reddy brothers were in- volved in illegal mining activities, have evaded a huge amount of taxes and had been collecting hafta from other mine owners. His mother Honnamma (52), who was caring for him and was waiting on the hospital corridor, started beat- ing her chest when she heard the news of her son’s death. She col- lapsed and the doctors at the hospi- tal gave her first-aid and asked the rel- atives to rush her to Jayadeva Hospi- tal. But she passed away on the way to hospital. Vasu’s sister-in-law Padma (40), who was treating him like her son, poured kerosene and set herself on fire. She suffered 82 percent burns and was rushed to St John’s Hospital where she died this morning. In her death statement to the police, Padma, who was married to Vasu’s elder brother Chinnaswamy, treated Vasu like her son as she had lost two of her children over the last few years. She told the police that Vasu was the sole earning member of the fam- ily as Chinnaswamy had stopped working because of nerve problems over the last few years. Vasu was a tai- lor by profession and had earned quite a name for his embroider skills. Vasu, who had been lodged in the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, was brought to the Rajiv Gandhi memorial hospital on August 28 night after his condition due to TB deteriorated. A resident of Kodichikkenahalli, he was arrested on September 29 of last year. An en- thusiastic participant in the Ganesha festivals in the locality, he had taken part in the last year festivities too. Dur- ing the procession to immerse the idol, some friends in the area had clashed, leading to the murder of Di- nesh. The police had picked up Vasu for the murder. But Padma told the po- lice that her brother-in-law was in- nocent and a false case had been foisted against him. Vasu had not got bail, and his mother had spent all her savings and took loans to seek bail for him. Padma said that Vasu developed health complications after he was lodged in the jail. “He contracted a lot of diseases, including TB, from oth- er inmates at the jail,” she told the po- lice. Funeral for Honnamma was held this morning, while the bodies of Vasu and Padma are still lying at the government mortuary, as their rel- atives were yet to arrive to claim the remains. is synonymous withbright colours, and this

time too at the Van Heusen IndiaMen’s Week yesterday in NewDelhi, the designer didn’t shyaway from splashing hues onthe runway, although in a subtlemanner.

This is the third time the Ban-galore-based designer is partic-ipating in the mens week. In thepast two seasons, he has alwaysbeen making bold choices – beit bright colours or letting theboys wear hot-pants. His fortelies in being different.

This time too Khosla usedcolours like pink, yellow, orangeand purple for some of the outfits, and balanced his line by usingshades like beige, black, whiteand grey. “There were coloursin my line, but yes, not thatmuch because I didn’t want tobe repetitive and predictable. Sothe idea was to keep the signaturethere and work more on thewearability factor,” Khosla said.

“The line was about cool guys, nothing over the top. There wasan Indian influence in it but witha bit of contemporary twist,” headded. The designer had usedthe tie-and-dye technique andkept the length of the jacketsshorter than normal. Foldedpants, zipper jackets, waist-coats,crushed cotton shirts and linenpants teamed with funky printedshoes and bags are sure to starta new trend for men. IANS

Kempabudi lake to be developed

Bangalore: Bruhat BangaloreMahanagara Palike Commission-er Siddaiah along with other of-ficials inspected the Kempabudiand Karithimanahalli lakes re-cently.

“Five acres of land surround-ing Kempabudi lake has not beendeveloped for the last manyyears. Different varieties ofsaplings will be grown here andwill be developed as a park. BothKempabui and Karithimanahallilakes will be developed which

can receive rain water from near-by areas. This will check floodingof the low-lying areas. The lakeswill be surveyed across the lengthand breadth and would befenced,” Siddaiah said.

He inspected the desiltingworks at the Vruhsabavati canalnext to the famous Gali AnjaneyaTemple on Mysore road. “Thereis a need to take up desilting ac-tivity to control the fury causedby rains. Also desilting workswould be extended whereverneeded across the city,” headded.

State industry welcomes SCdirective on releasing iron oreState’s steel industry, hit

hard by shortage of ironore, has welcomed the

Supreme Court’s direction to re-lease 1.5 million tonnes of theraw material every monththrough e-auction.

This will increase the totalsupply to the industry to 2.5 mil-lion tonnes per month as thestate-run NMDC has been al-lowed to do mining of up to onemillion tonne a month.

The apex court had earlierbanned mining in Bellary,Tumkur and Chitradurga districtsdue to large-scale environmentaldegradation of the areas.

On Friday, however, it hadaccepted the recommendationsof the Central Empowered Com-mittee (CEC), which had saidthat 1.5 MT iron ore per monthcan be released for the industrythrough e-auction route fromthe stock of 25.88 million tonnes,

lying at the mines in the state.“It’s a great relief. Now, we

can run our plants at 80 per centcapacity as the iron ore supplieswill be somewhere about 2.5 mil-lion tonnes per month for theindustry (in Karnataka),” saidMVS Seshagiri Rao, Joint Man-aging Director of JSW Steel, which runs a 10 million tonnesper annum (MTPA) plant in thestate.

Expressing similar sentiments,a senior official of an affectedcompany said, “Taken together, the production of NMDC at 1 MTper month, the supplies will beabout 2.5 MT in a month againsta demand of 2.9 MT. So, againstnothing, we will at least getsomething to run our units.”

However, small and mediumsize companies are not that op-timistic as they feel that the e-auction route will increase theprices of iron ore significantly

and the input costs of the com-panies will increase manifold.

“Only big producers wouldbenefit (from the e-auction) asthey can bid for any amount tosecure supplies. The biddingroute will increase our produc-tion costs by many times andultimately, our plants may getinto the danger zone of becomingunviable,” said an official of an-other company, which runs ablast furnace of one milliontonnes capacity in the region.

Adding that quality of the rawmaterial is also a concern as thestock is a mix of iron ore lumpsand fines, the official furthersaid that smaller companies didnot have the capability of run-ning their units on fines (lowergrade iron ore).

Both the officials, however, refused to be identified as thematter was subjudice.

Besides releasing the stocks,

the CEC had also recommendedthat iron ore from Karnataka’smines will not be exported, andlease-wise and grade-wise re-serve price for iron ore for biddingwill be fixed after consideringthe sale price obtained by Na-tional Mineral Development Cor-poration (NMDC).

NMDC is the only companyallowed by the apex court to domining in the state, while MSTC– a mini-ratna PSU specialisedin e-commerce – has been giventhe responsibility of doing theauctions for iron ore stocks.

Due to ban on mining, theiron and steel industry in Kar-nataka has been witnessing se-vere shortages of iron ore.

According to the BangaloreChamber of Industry and Com-merce (BSIC), daily supplies wereabout 41,000-42,000 tonnes ofiron ore till last week for the ironand steel units against a dailydemand of 1,04,000 tonnes.

22 of 60 sponge iron plants inthe state have shut their opera-tions for want of the raw material, while many other firms like JSWSteel, MSPL, BMM Ispat, Sathava-hana Ispat among others haveresorted to operating at reducedcapacities due to paucity of theraw material, industry sourcessaid. The state produces 16 mil-lion tonnes iron and steel in ayear, which is a little less than25 per cent of the country’s totalproduction.

The state also produces morethan a fifth of India’s total ironore production, which is around220 million tonnes annually. Ofthis, about 80 per cent comesfrom Bellary-Hospet region atabout 40 million tonnes per an-num, Tumkur and Chitradurgadistricts meet rest of the require-ments. PTI

Focus of partiesnow shifts to

Koppal by‑pollD L Harish

Bangalore Beat Bureau

Bangalore: There has been ahectic political activity with theannouncement of by-electionsto the Koppal assembly con-stituency.

All the three major politicalparties – BJP, Congress and JD(S)– are desperate to grab the seat. This is the first election in thestate after former Lokayukta Jus-tice Santosh Hegde submitted areport on illegal mining that costthe BJP strongman B S Yeddyu-rappa the chief minister’s post. The report has turned out to bea millstone for all political parties.A victory here could lift the bur-den a bit.

The Congress has already an-nounced that it is fielding formerMLA Basavaraj Hitnal for theby-poll, which is scheduled tobe held on September 26.

The Congress, which seemsto largely unaffected by the min-ing report, is confident of win-ning the election by focusing onillegal mining report, illegal landdenotification and the selectionof a “weak chief minister”,Sadananda Gowda, to succeedYeddyurappa. The Congress willalso highlight how the BJP gov-ernment has been chanting onlythe development mantra withoutcarrying out any developmentworks.

The BJP wants to field formerMLA Karadi Sanganna, whosedefection to the saffron partyfrom the JD(S), necessitated theby-election.

But the party is yet to finalisehis name. Despite the huge hur-dles it has to cross, the partywants to get back the seat. AndYeddyurappa wants to have hissay here too.

That’s what led to a separatemeeting at his residence on Sat-urday with his loyalists, whileparty president K S Eshwarappaconducted another meeting atthe party headquarters.

Yeddyurappa, during histenure as chief minister eversince the BJP came to power in2008, has been winning all theelections for the party, whichhas made him the most powerfulleader in the saffron party.

He again proved his mettle

when he elected his candidateSadananda Gowda for the chiefminister’s post.

The JD(S), which fell victimto the Operation Lotus orches-trated by the BJP, has kept a lowprofile.

Party state president H D Ku-maraswamy has not been en-thusiastic about selecting a can-didate for the by-poll.

But the former chief ministerhas really a lot to worry aboutother than the polls at this junc-ture.

The Lokayukta has found himguilty of favouring the JantakalMining Company and getting asite allotted to his wife Anitafrom the Vishwabharati HousingCooperative Society, whosefounder B Krishna Bhat has beenarrested for illegalities concern-ing the distribution of sites.

He is now facing cases filedbefore the Lokayukta specialcourt.

Sources close to the leadersay that Kumaraswamy firstwants to clear all his cases beforehe starts focusing on the electionand other political activities.

His father and JD(S) strong-man H D Deve Gowda has askedKumaraswamy to keep awayfrom the by-election and not tobother about campaigning toofor the party candidate in Koppal.

Gowda is now worried thatthe presence of his “tainted” soncould damage the poll prospectsof the party here.

Gowda, who is usually vocalabout issues concerning thestate, has been keeping quieton the latest developments.

He has been watching the de-velopments within the BJP andCongress, party sources said.

Political pundits say if Gowdais quiet, then certainly there issomething big brewing, whichwill be announced at the righttime.

Main investigator forcommuting death penaltyNew Delhi: Amid a raging debateon the issue of clemency forkillers of Rajiv Gandhi, the maininvestigator in the 20-year-oldcase D R Karthikeyan says thathe will be happy if the deathpenalty of the three accused iscommuted to life sentence.

With the demand for commut-ing their death sentence becom-ing an emotive issue in TamilNadu, he suggested that Parlia-ment should convene a specialsession to discuss the policy withregard to capital punishment asdecisions taken on regional basiswould set a dangerous prece-dent.

“I have nothing personalagainst them. I did my duty, let

the government do their dutynow. I will be happy if theirdeath sentence is reduced to lifeimprisonment,” he said.

Karthikeyan was asked to takecharge of the Special Investiga-tion Team, a day after Rajiv Gand-hi’s assassination on May 21,1991. Within a year on May 20,1992, a day before the first an-niversary of the assassination, his team filed the charge-sheetnaming 41 people as accused.

The former IPS officer saidthe commutation of Nalini Sree-haran’s death sentence may helpthe other three accused, whosemercy petition has been rejectedby President Pratibha Patil. TheSupreme Court had sentenced

Murugan, Santhan, Perarivalanand Nalini to death in 1999.

The Madras High Court hadrecently granted an eight-weekinterim stay on the execution ofthe convicts which was sched-uled for September 9.

“They have got a case, as oneof the condemned prisoners’death sentence has been com-muted to life. Moreover, theyhave been in jail for 20 years, and their mercy petitions havetaken 11 years, which was a longperiod of uncertainty,” he said.

Karthikeyan, a Padma Shriwinner, professed the need toformulate a uniform policy oncapital punishment while cau-tioning against any selective

treatment. “A special session ofParliament should be called todiscuss the policy on deathpenalty. It should not be decidedon the basis of region. That willbe a dangerous precedent andcan divide the country,” he said.

Expressing disappointed overthe delay in deciding clemencyapplications, he blamed the gov-ernment for not taking decisionsin reasonable time.

“The delay by the governmentmakes the whole effort of theinvestigators look meaningless. It certainly demoralises the in-vestigators. Because of delay intaking decisions it has resultedin confusion,” he said. TheSupreme Court, in its judgement,

had appreciated the the “metic-ulous investigation” and “assid-uous work” of the SIT team head-ed by Karthikeyan. He main-tained that despite being advisedby several officials to drop fromthe case after LTTE’s involvementwas found, he continued theprobe. “I had more problemswith certain high-profile politi-cians than the LTTE. They weretrying to distort, derail the in-vestigation so that their politicalobjectives were achieved. It wasmental agony for me,” he said.

He said that challenging theverdict of Supreme Court after11 years would lead to contemptof court and demoralise the in-vestigators. PTI

Impeachment:Speaker holds talks

New Delhi: Lok Sabha SpeakerMeira Kumar is holding consul-tations with the representativesof government and political par-ties to take a decision on whetherto go ahead with impeachmentof Justice Soumitra Sen in LokSabha.

“I have to consult becausethere have been new develop-ments. I will be talking (to polit-ical parties and government),”Kumar told reporters outsideParliament before the House be-gan.

Asked whether an all-partymeeting will be called to discussthe issue, she said nothing wasscheduled but she will be talk-ing.

Meanwhile, a senior UnionMinister has indicated that theimpeachment was unlikely asthe judge has already resigned.

The government had yesterdaynotified the resignation of JusticeSen of the Calcutta High Court.

In the normal course, such anotification is not required sincethe resignation of a constitutionalauthority is deemed to be ac-cepted if it is in order.

Attorney-general G E Vahan-vati had opined on Friday thatthe impeachment proceedings, having already been completedin the Rajya Sabha, should becompleted by the other house.

This opinion appears to have been based on the premisethat the resignation letter axed by Sen to Rashtrapati Bhavan on Thursday could notbe taken cognisance of sincesuch letters must be written in the hand of the judge as perArt 217 (a) of the Constitution.PTI
