As there was no consensus on the successor to outgoing chief minister B S Yed- dyurappa, party central observers decided to go for a secret ballot to know the minds of the legislators. The ballot paper contained only two names: MP Sadananda Gowda and former rural development and panchayat raj min- ister Jagadish Shettar. So it is now certain that the next chief minister would be one of the two. But the ballot voting too did not go on smoothly because of the intense fights. Par- ty sources told Bangalore Beat that the chief minister would now be decided by the party high command in New Delhi. Though the chief minister could be one of the two leaders, there is also a possibility of a third man emerging. While Yeddyurappa wanted headcount, state BJP president K S Eshwarappa repre- senting the other faction sought a secret bal- lot. The two central observers, former party national president Rajnath Singh and par- ty national general secretary Arun Jaitley, had a tough time in getting the legislators to arrive at a consensus candidate. Anticipating the secret ballot, ballot pa- pers and box had been brought from the BJP head office in Malleswaram to the meeting venue. The Yeddyurappa faction claimed the support of 71 MLAs, while the Shettar supporters claimed 70-odd MLAs with them, which is impossible as the party has only 119 legislators in the assembly. Earlier, 68 MLAs from the Yeddyurappa faction, left from a private hotel on Resi- dency road to the meeting venue. They left in two Volvo buses, while two buses also left from another hotel near the Bangalore Golf Course. Yeddyurappa’s son and Shi- moga MP B Y Raghavendra, and his close aide Shobha Karandlaje left by cars. Ananth Kumar did not attend the meet- ing, saying that he did not get the invitation. MASTER IS THE SOLUTIONAs the ancient proverb goes, Guru

bina gati nahin. There is noprogress without a Guru. Guru

is not a person; Guru is knowledge.Guru represents enormity. The Englishword guide comes from the Sanskritword Guru.

You need a guide for everything, for learning the guitar, music, or anyother discipline. Guru is one whoguides you into wisdom, knowledgeand kindles the life force in you.

There is an element of Guru in everyhuman being.

Consciously or unconsciously youare a Guru to somebody. Wheneveryou have done something for someonewithout expecting anything in return, given advice, guided people, giventhem love and care, you have played

the role of a Guru. This Guru tattva is to be revered

and believed in. There are so many people around

you and you are stuck in everybody’smoods, emotions and blame. But whena Guru is there this will not matter toyou. Even if it does, it will not last formore than a few minutes. It is likewhen you have a raincoat, you canprotect yourself from the rain.

When one moves in this principleof Guru tattva, all the boundaries dropand starts feeling one with everyonearound, and with the whole universe.

When that wisdom dawns, miserydisappears and there is no place forself-blame.

If there is self-blame, it means thatyou have not come to the Guru yet.

Coming to the Guru means havingthe faith that Guru is with us all thetime. It means that whatever we wantwill be done and we will be shownthe way.

The best way to ensure peace inyour life is to stay close to the Guruthrough sadhana, satsang, reflectionand devotion.

This will ensure that spiritualitystrengthens in you. However, evenwhen you cannot be physically closeto your Master, you can be close inmind and spirit.

When there is too much confusion, then find solace in surrender. Surrenderto your Guru or the Divine. See theMaster beyond his physical form andpersonality.

There is no difference between the

Divine, the Self and the Guru. TheGuru is a reflection of your own truenature and a guide leading you backto your Self.

Through your own diligence, faithand commitment, you can clearly seethat whatever be the circumstances, the moment you consider the Guru asyour Guru, it becomes possible to ac-quire all the His qualities.

Once the Master becomes the solu-tion, you are never defeated in life. The devotion for the Guru is enough. The Master is here for you and is withyou through the good and bad times. You are not alone.

So find a Guru and live naturallyand rejoice in love and joy. This is a weekly column that appears

ESHWARAPPA: BJP CHOSE MONEYBAGS, INDULGED IN CASTE POLITICSʻBut it will change; we will work for welfare of party, not hanker for powerʼ

Bangalore Beat Bureau

Bangalore: BJP state president K S Es-hwarappa today accepted that the partyduring the last assembly electionschose candidates with money powerand forgot the party ideals. “But wewill change that and give promi-nence to those party func-tionaries who will uphold theprinciples that the BJP hasstood for and go to the nextassembly elections posi-tively,” he added.

He said, “Yes, we alsoindulged in caste poli-tics. But all that willchange. We want tobuild the party andnot hanker forpower.”

The BJP isknown as a dis-ciplined party.“People vote justby knowing thatthere is a candi-date from the party. That was not the casejust few years ago. Things have changed.

But that should not make our partyworkers to relax and take iteasy. They should strivehard to take the messageof the party to the villagelevel and win over the

electorate,” hesaid.

“There is hard-ly another one andhalf years left for

the next assembly

elections. We want to work on oursupport base and increase the

probability of winning theelection. The focus willbe on choosing candi-dates who will genuinelywork to promote theprinciples of the party,”he said.

On whether therecould be a ballot to choose

the next chief minister, who

will succeed outgoing chief minister BS Yeddyurappa who resigned on Sundayfor his indictment in the Lokayuktareport on illegal mining, he said, “Therecould be. Why not? Ours is a democraticparty. Be it the selection of leaders fortaluk panchayat, zilla panchayat orthe chief minister’s post, the party ho-nours collective choice.”

He denied that there the party hasbeen divided into factions.

“The media makes too much out ofdiscussions held by different leaderstogether. I am holding discussions withparty national general secretary AnanthKumar and Jagadish Shettar (formerrural development and panchayat rajminister) and others. I also spoke toYeddyurappa. But does that mean wetwo have formed a faction? It is neces-sary for leaders to discuss among eachother for the welfare of the party andthe state. The process is only to choosea leader who is acceptable to all andwho will take the party in the right di-rection.”

He said, “Now everyone is sayingthat Sadananda Gowda, Shettar andeven I are in the race for the chief min-ister’s post. We don’t know. It all de-

pends on what the workers want. Therecould even be a fourth candidate whocould emerge.”

He said, “Everyone made a hue andcry over the absence of Ananth Kumarat the Hubli executive committee meet-ing. But it was a non-issue. That ishow the party democracy works. Hedid it for the good of the party.”

Criticising the Congress for its highcommand culture and lack of democ-racy in that party, he said, “Even animportant position like the party pres-ident is chosen by the high commandin the Congress. That is what happenedin the case of Parameshwara (the stateCongress president). There is no op-portunity for discussion within thatparty. But we don’t want have such asystem where the decision of the partycentral leadership is forced on theworkers. It is purely a democratic systemwithin the BJP.”

On his journey since 2008, whenthe BJP won the state election, till now,he said, “I am grateful that I have beena worker of this party. I am blessed tobe the party president. I want to make full use of the opportunity provided to me.”

I will be CM,says Shettar

Bangalore Beat Bureau

He was critical of the BJPgovernment till now andsaid, “There have beensome problems with thegovernance of the state. Iwill set them all right.”

On Yeddyruapa pushingfor the candidature of MPSadananda Gowda for thechief minister’s post, hesaid, “Yeddyurappa is asenior leader and I don’twant to comment on it. Hehas worked for the successof the party during histenure.”

He denied that there are fac-tions within the party. “Therewill also be no confusion inchoosing the legislature partyleader who would don the mantleof the chief minister. It will bethrough consensus. I don’t think

JSW STEEL CUTS VIJAYANAGAR PRODUCTION BY UP TO 40%

JSW Steel has said it has cut its productionsfrom its Vijayanagar plant in Bellary dis-trict by 35-40 per cent due to paucity

of iron ore, a key steel making raw materi-al.

“We have reduced our steel productionfrom Vijayanagar by about 35-40 per centas we don’t have much iron ore inventoryleft,” Sajjan Jindal-led JSW Steel’s Joint man-aging director MVS Seshagiri Rao told PTI.

Asked whether the plant was moving to-wards shutdown, Rao said, “The companyhas hardly two-three days of iron ore left,”but he refused to elaborate.

Last Friday, the Supreme Court orderedsuspension of all iron ore mining operationsin the Bellary region on environmentaldegradation in the area.

JSW Steel has 10.3 million tonnes per an-

num steel-making capacity at Vijayanagarin Bellary and it sources about 50 per centof its iron ore requirements from Bellary, while another 30 per cent is met from Chi-tradurga district of the state.

Meanwhile, Karnataka Iron and SteelManufacturers’ Association gave a repre-sentation to Union steel minister Beni PrasadVerma stating that the suspension of themining operation at Bellary would lead toclosure of operations of the steel and alliedsectors in the region as they have no ironore left.

Moreover, in a separate statement, Ban-galore Chambers of Commerce and Industrysaid the suspension on iron ore miningcould adversely impact the country’s GrossDomestic Product by 0.5 per cent amountingto $8.5 billion.

“Karnataka-based iron and steel compa-nies are approaching a critical stage ofclosure of their manufacturing activities inthe next 2-3 days following the SupremeCourt pronouncement last Friday haltingiron ore mining activities in the Bellary re-gion,” it added.

Karnataka produces 16 million tonnesiron and steel in a year, which is a little lessthan 25 per cent of the country’s total pro-duction. The state also produces more thana fifth of India’s total iron ore production, which is around 220 million tonnes annually.Of this, about 80 per cent comes from Bel-lary-Hospet region.

Half of this production from Bellary-Hospet region is consumed within the state, including steel plants of JSW Steel, KalyaniSteel and Mukund Steel. PTI

BCCI refuses to react to criticism about schedule

Mumbai: The BCCI today refusedto react to widespread criticismabout the lack of preparation bythe Indian team in the run-upto the Test series against Englandwhich it is trailing 0-2 right now.

“I don’t react to media criti-cisms. I don’t want to react toanything,” BCCI chief ShashankManohar said from Nagpur.

India, fighting to retain theworld number one ranking, havebeen thrashed by huge marginsin the first two Tests by hostsEngland and are in clear dangerof losing the four-match series.

England need to win the rub-ber by a two-match margin toovertake India and shoot to thetop of the official ICC Test rank-ings.

Among the strong critics wasDhoni’s predecessor Sourav Gan-guly, who blamed the absenceof enough warm-up games forthe team’s predicament.

“I am a firm believer that everytime you tour, you need at leasttwo warm-up games and theyabsolutely could have played anextra game,” said the Bengalstalwart, who retired from inter-national cricket a few years ago.India captain Dhoni, under fireafter having lost the first matchat Lord’s – the 100th encounterbetween the two rivals – by 196runs and the next at TrentBridge by 319 runs, concededyesterday that the preparationsfor the series had not been ide-al.

“It’s a mental thing as well, because for some of us it’s beena seven-match Test series withhardly a gap.

The preparation needs to beslightly different which is whywe are saying the next ten daysare important for us ? not onlyphysically but mentally as well,”the Ranchi-born wicket keeper

batsman said in England yes-terday, the scheduled fifth day

of the second Test. India had one extra day’s

rest after being beaten withinfour days in Nottingham. Theyhad arrived in England straightafter completing a three-Testseries in the West Indies thatDhoni took part in.

The Indians went into thehigh-profile Test rubber after alone three-day warm-up gameagainst Somerset that Dhoniskipped totally while iconicbatsman Sachin Tendulkar andpace spearhead Zaheer Khanbatted and bowled only in thefirst innings.

Khan, who missed the entireCaribbean visit due to an ankleinjury, later pulled up with ahamstring strain after bowlingonly 13 full overs in the Lord’sTest, which reduced India to athree-man attack in the match.

Dhoni has been shoddy withhis glove work and out of touch

with the bat while championbatsman Tendulkar showedsigns of slowly getting into thegroove during his well-craftedhalf century in the second in-nings of the Nottingham matchbut is still waiting for his 100thinternational hundred. Khanmissed the second Test.

Off spinner Harbhajan Singh, who completed 400 Test wicketsat Lord’s after giving away over200 runs and was a virtual pas-senger with the ball in the TrentBridge tie, also complained ofan abdominal strain during theEngland second innings.

The Indians now have a two-day tour game in Northamptonbefore the do-or-die third Testof the rubber scheduled in Edg-baston, Birmingham, from Au-gust 10.

The fourth and last Test is tobe played at The Oval from August 18. PTI

Brief history of gamesThe first International Children's Games

(ICG) were held in Celje, Slovenia in 1968

at the height of the Cold War and more than40 years later, the vision of the foundingmembers for the event has firmly been es-tablished. The games were the brainchildof physical education teacher ProfessorMetod Klemenc, a Yugoslavian who hadsuffered enormously as a youngster duringthe Second World War. He did not want fu-ture generations to endure the suffering and

started the games. It was his vision to create an event fos-

tering a better understanding among chil-dren of different cultural backgrounds,as well as promoting peace and harmonyworldwide which led to the inauguralGames being held in Slovenia, then part ofYugoslavia, in 1968.

The ICG is now governed by an executive

committee and general assembly recog-nised by the International Olympics Com-mittee.

The games have attracted over 35,200participants, representing 332 cities from 74 countries over four continents and arenow believed to be the largest gathering of young people taking part in sports in theworld.

People mirror mannerisms of those they like

Washington: Two people who like each other willoften unwittingly mirror each other’s mannerisms, leaning forward in close synchrony, for instance, that strengthens their bond, says a new research.

In popular culture, mirroring is frequentlyused as a strategy, for flirting or having a successfuldate, for closing a sale or facing a job interview.

But new research suggests that sometimes thesmarter thing to do is to refrain from mirroring, thejournal Psychological Science reports.

Piotr Winkielman and Liam Kavanagh, psy-chologists at the University of California, SanDiego, noted that in real-life situations others ob-serve mirroring between two people, according toa California statement.

“Mimicry is a crucial part of social intelli-gence,” said Winkielman, professor of psycholo-gy. “But it is not enough to simply know how tomimic.”

“It’s also important to know when and what notto. The success of mirroring depends on mirror-ing the right people at the right time for the rightreasons. Sometimes the socially intelligent thingto do is not to imitate.”

Study participants were asked to watch sever-al staged and videotaped interviews, which hadboth cordial and unfriendly interviewers. Inter-viewees who mimicked the unfriendly interlocu-tor were judged to be less competent than thosewho didn’t.

In a second experiment, participants were ex-posed to the same videos but with the interview-er obscured. In other words, they couldn’t see anyevidence of mimicry, and the results supported theresearchers’ hypothesis.

It is not merely interacting with negativelyperceived people that has a social cost; you paya price for aligning with them through body lan-guage. IANS

Grapes may help prevent early ageing

London: If you wish to avoid looking older thanyour age, try relishing grapes. A new study hasfound this fruit could protect against skin cancerand prevent premature ageing.

The study has shown that compounds found inthe fruit protect cells from the ultraviolet radiationemitted by the sun — the leading environmentalcause of skin cancer, Daily Mail reported.

Ultra violet (UV) rays increase the levels of re-active oxygen species — harmful molecules whichdamage the cells — in the skin.

Scientists from the University of Barcelonaand the Spanish National Research Council haveshown that substances called flavonoids ex-tracted from grapes can prevent these from form-ing in cells exposed to UV rays. “These encour-aging results should be taken into consideration...to develop new photo-protection skin products,”says Marta Cascante, a biochemist at the Univer-sity of Barcelona and director of the project.

Cascante, whose report was published in theJournal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry, added: “This study supports the idea of using theseproducts to protect the skin from cell damage anddeath caused by solar radiation.” IANS

Why packing on pounds is riskier for Indians

Toronto: Packing on pounds is riskier forIndians and other South Asians thanwhite people, says a study.

While white Caucasian people storetheir extra body fat in their waistlines, In-dians and other South Asians carry thisextra fat into their internal organs like liv-er and abdomen affecting their normalfunctioning.

It is this disruption of normal organfunctions among Indians and SouthAsians that triggers diabetes and heartproblems, says the study conducted bya young Indo-Canadian researcher.

Sonia Anand, who is professor ofmedicine and epidemiology at McMasterUniversity, says that the prevalence of di-abetes and coronary diseases amongSouth Asians is due to their body adding“the organ-hugging fat” that leads tothese diseases.

“South Asians have less space to storefat below the skin than white Cau-casians. Their excess fat, therefore, over-flows to ectopic compartments, in the ab-domen and liver where it may affect func-tion,” says Anand.

She says this visceral fat is associatedwith metabolic problems such as ele-vated glucose and abnormal lipids whichlead to coronary artery disease.

Her study support previous researchwhich shows that, even with the samebody mass index (BMI) as Caucasians,

people from the Indian subcontinenthave more risk factors for cardiovascu-lar disease, including type 2 diabetes, low‘good’ cholesterol, and more abdominalobesity.

Arya Sharma, director of the Canadi-an Obesity Network and a co-author ofthe study, added, “This study helps ex-plain why South Asians experience

weight-related health problems at low-er BMI levels than Caucasians. For the cli-nician, this also means that individualsof South Asian heritage need to bescreened for the presence of heart diseaseand diabetes at lower BMIs.”

The study by Anand and Sharma appears in the medical journal PLoS ONE. IANS

Now, a robot that can walk on water

Washington: Scientists claim to have developed an aquatic robot which can walk on water.

An international team says that the micro-robot mimics the amazing water-walking abil-ities of water strider – the long-legged insectthat scoots across the surface of ponds, lakesand other waterways.

The bionic microrobot incorporates im-provements over previous devices of this kindthat position it as a prime candidate for mili-tary spy missions, water pollution monitoring, and other applications, say the scientists.

“Walking on the water surface is a dream ofhumans, but it is exactly the way of life forsome aquatic insects,” said team leader Qin-min Pan.

The robot can walk on water because of itshighly water-repellent (superhydrophobic)legs, says the team.

The scientists describe progress on a new ro-bot, with a body about the size of a quarter; 10water-repellent, wire legs; and two movable,oar-like legs – propelled by two miniature mo-tors.

“Because the weight of the microrobot isequal to that of about 390 water striders, onemight expect that it will sink quickly whenplaced on the water surface,” say the scientists.

However, it stands effortlessly on water surfaces and also walks and turns freely, according to the findings which are published in the ‘Applied Materials & Inter-faces’ journal. PTI

Active lifestyle can help improve decision‑makingWashington: A more active lifestyle seems tobe the best way to help us improve our decision-making based on what we hear, says a study.

Ray Hull, audiologist at Wichita State Uni-versity in the US, describes auditory processingas the ability to make decisions about what wehear and the ability to comprehend what is be-ing said to us.

Even moderate cardiovascular exercise inyour late 80s or early 90s can improve the abil-ity to process what you hear and help speed upthe decision-making process, adds Hull, pro-fessor in communication sciences and disordersat Wichita State, who led the study.

Somehow activities appear to turn back ourbiological clock and help us process informa-

tion better, reports the American Journal of Au-diology.

“One of the reasons the processing of whatpeople hear tends to decline with advancing ageis that they become less and less active as theyget older,” says Hull, according to a Wichitastatement.

Adult children often wonder: “Why can’t dadseem to understand what we’re saying to himor make decisions about what we tell himanymore?”

Hull, who led the study, said the answer tothat question may not be that dad is hard ofhearing, but it may be his inability to compre-hend or process what he hears, which may bedue to lethargic lifestyle.

London: Replacing petrol and dieselwith plant-based biofuels may becrucial in curbing climate changebut the manufacture of such fuelscould leave hazardous chemicals, new research says.

The study can predict the level oftoxicity of biofuels on the basis ofcomputer analysis, says chemistSolvejg Jorgensen from the Universityof Copenhagen, Denmark.

Jorgensen’s calculations also showthat biofuels produced by the wrongsynthesis path will decompose tocompounds such as health hazardoussmog, carcinogenic particles and

toxic formaldehyde. The research promises cheaper,

faster and above all safer develop-ment of alternatives to fossil fuels, the Journal of Physical Chemistry Areports.

Previously an assessment of theenvironmental impact of a givenmethod of production could not becarried out until the fuel had actuallybeen made, according to a Copen-hagen statement.

“There are an almost infinite num-ber of different ways to get to thesefuels. We can show the least haz-ardous avenues to follow and we can

do that with a series of calculationsthat take only days,” explains Jor-gensen.

Chemically biofuels are composedof extremely large molecules. As theydegrade during combustion and laterin the air, they peel of several differentcompounds.

But Jorgensen was astonished tolearn there is a huge difference intoxicity depending on how the molecules assemble during produc-tion. She was also buoyed up by thefact that she could calculate speedilyand precisely the degradation mech-anisms for a biofuel molecule. IANS

Artificial hearttransplant

surgery in UKLondon: Surgeons claim to havecarried out a ground-breakingartificial heart transplant oper-ation on a 40-year-old man whowas suffering from end-stagefailure of both chambers of hisheart.

During a six-hour successfuloperation, surgeons at PapworthHospital in the UK replacedMatthew Green's damaged heartwith a device that they say willserve the role of both ventriclesand heart valves, 'The Daily Tele-graph' reported.

The device provides a bloodflow of up to 9.5 litres, eliminat-ing the symptoms and effects ofsevere heart failure.

The artificial heart will bepowered by a "freedom portabledriver", worn like a backpackor shoulder bag. A team, led bySteven Tsui, carried out the sur-gery on Green whoc sufferedfrom arrhythmogenic right ven-tricular cardiomyopathia, a heartmuscle disease which results inarrhythmia, heart failure, andsudden death.

"Matthew's condition was de-

teriorating rapidly and we dis-cussed with him the possibilityof receiving this device, becausewithout it he may not have sur-vived the wait until a suitabledonor heart could be found forhim.

"The operation went extremelywell and Matthew has made anexcellent recovery. I expect himto go home very soon, beingable to do a lot more than beforethe operation with a vastly im-proved quality of life, until wecan find a suitable donor heartfor him to have a heart trans-plant," Dr Tsui said.

A jubilant Green added: "Twoyears ago I was cycling ninemiles to work and nine milesback every day but by the time Iwas admitted to hospital I wasstruggling to walk even a fewyards. "I am really excited aboutgoing home and just being able to do the everyday thingsthat I haven't been able to dofor such a long time such asplaying in the garden with myson and cooking a meal for myfamily." Physics may explaincrop‑circles mystery

Washington: Crop circles whichappear on farmers’ fields, withtheir gigantic yet intricate pat-terns, have intrigued scientistsand UFO buffs for decades, butwith none emerging any wiser.

However, Richard Taylor, di-rector of the Materials ScienceInstitute at the University of Ore-gon, takes a serious, hard lookat a topic that critics might claimis beyond scientific understand-ing.

Taylor says physics could holdthe answer, with crop-circleartists possibly using the GlobalPositioning System (GPS) as wellas lasers and microwaves to cre-ate their patterns, dispensingwith the rope, planks of woodand bar stools, the journalPhysics World reports.

Microwaves, Taylor suggests, could be used to make cropstalks fall over and cool in ahorizontal position a techniquethat could explain the speedand efficiency of the artists andthe incredible detail that somecrop circles exhibit, accordingto an Oregon statement.

Indeed, one research teamclaims to be able to reproduce

the intricate damage inflictedon crops using a handheld mag-netron, readily available frommicrowave ovens, and a 12Vbattery.

As Taylor writes, the “crop-circle artists are not going togive up their secrets easily. This

summer, unknown artists willventure into the countrysideclose to your homes and carryout their craft, safe in the knowl-edge that they are continuingthe legacy of the most science-oriented art movement in his-tory”. IANS

Bacteria can purify

toxic waterMelbourne: Researchers claim to have shown for thefirst time that naturally occurring bacteria can helppurify toxic water.

A team at the University of New South Wales hasshown it can safely destroy industrial toxins in ground-water arising from PVC plastic production by injectingnaturally occurring bacteria into a contaminatedaquifer in Sydney.

The trial has confirmed the bacteria’s natural abilityto degrade and clean up chlorinated solvents thatleaked many years ago from a former chemical plantinto the Botany Sands Aquifer, creating large plumesof contaminated groundwater.

“With present technology, it was expected that itmight take decades or perhaps centuries before thesetoxic solvents are removed from the aquifer,” ProfMike Manefield, who led the team, said.

He added: “The energy demands and hence the fi-nancial burden of operating the contaminant con-tainment system over this period of time is significant, but with our cultures in the ground we have the po-tential to greatly reduce the cleanup time and thecost and environmental footprint of containment.

“Our tests showed that these bacteria effectivelybreathe these pollutants the way we breathe oxygen. It’s a big step forward. These cultures represent agreener and cheaper tool we can use to clean upsome of our contaminated sites. They have not previ-ously been available in Australia.”

The researchers collected bacteria occurring naturallyin the Botany aquifer and isolated three bacterialcommunities that live off the breakdown of pollutants, including the first one known to degrade chloroform– a possible carcinogen that has been banned formany years in consumer products.

It’s found that bacteria had not degraded more ofthe pollutants on their own as they couldn’t build upand sustain large populations in the aquifer due to alack of food.

Further studies in which large volumes of thebacteria were grown in beer kegs showed that they thrived on a variety of diets, including ethanol, glucose and emulsified vegetable oils, say the researchers. PTI

Mubarak to stand trial for corruption, murder

Cairo: Ousted Egyptian President HosniMubarak is set to stand trial today oncharges of corruption and ordering thekilling of pro-democracy protesters dur-ing a massive uprising that toppled hisregime in February.

Egyptian authorities have said the83-year-old former strongman is healthyenough to travel to Cairo, where securityhas been beefed up in wake of themuch-awaited trial.

The trial will include Mubarak’s sons,Alaa and Gamal, former Interior MinisterHabib al-Adly and six of his assistants.

The Health Ministry will ensure thata medical team and healthcare are pro-vided for Mubarak during the trip, butthe Interior Ministry is responsible for

other necessary procedures, Helmy said.Mubarak, who ruled with an iron fist

for nearly three decades, is under arrestin a hospital in the Red Sea resort townof Sharm el-Sheikh since April, wherehe receives treatment for a heart con-dition. Helmy said Mubarak’s healthcondition had changed little recentlyand he suffers from depression andmaintains a low appetite.

According to news reports, more than1,000 security personnel will be deployedaround the Cairo Police Academy, wherethe trial is set to take place, and effortshave been made to ensure spectatorsin the court don’t get close enough tothe defendants’ case to avoid any agi-tation.

Motorcycle helmets couldmake you hard of hearing

London: Motorcycle helmetsmay be protecting bikers’ brainsbut they could also be leavingthem vulnerable to hearing loss.

Kennedy O Adetifa, M Carley,N Holt and I Walker, researchersin mechanical engineering, man-agement and psychology fromthe universities of Bath and BathSpa, Britain, mapped the airflowand noise patterns to find outwhy.

The distinctive roar of aHarley’s engine is loud, but stud-ies have revealed the biggestsource of noise for motorcyclistsis actually generated by airwhooshing over the riders’ hel-mets.

Even at legal speeds, thesound can exceed safe levels. Now, they have identified a key

source of the rushing din, theJournal of the Acoustical Societyof America reports.

Researchers placed motorcyclehelmets atop mannequin heads,

mounted them in a wind tunnel, and turned on the fans, accord-ing to a Bath statement.

By placing microphones atdifferent locations around thehelmet and at the mannequin’sear, they found that an area un-derneath the helmet and nearthe chin bar is a significantsource of the noise that reachesriders’ sensitive eardrums.

The team also investigatedhow helmet angle and windspeed affected the loudness. Fu-ture tests will move beyond thewind tunnel to real-life riderson the open road.

The findings may one day beused to design quieter helmets, saving riders’ ears for the en-joyment of hard biker rock, theresearchers said. IANS
