K. HENDERSON AMERICAN BORN 1964

Mid-century game boxes, toys, marionettes, postcards, card games, and vintage books make up the the playful foundation and inspiration for the contemporary still life paintings of K. Henderson. As a true collector of these artifacts and curiosities, her subjects are deeply personally relevant, yet they are are also universally appealing as the pop-culture icons of times gone by.

Henderson sources her semi-discarded childhood relics from various locations, and always feels that the more used the object, the more compelling her paintings become. Her intention is to capture every minute tear, tape, and scratch that have accumulated over the course of their existence with a meticulous attention to detail and a vibrant color palette. The result is an image of an object that tells a much larger story about the roles items play in our lives and the way they almost seem to take on a life of their own.

Southern California based artist, Christopher Schulz, works in multiple mediums to create his sculpture and consistently stretches his creative boundaries by utilizing cutting edge tools and technologies. Motivated by an impulse to engage his audience in a sensory exploration, Schulz is interested in weaving his personal experiences into his works of art through familiar imagery that emotionally resonates with the viewer.

With regards to his iconic shark/gun amalgamations, Schulz feels that certain images instantly trigger a sense of unease in a viewer, but that most of these subconscious emotions come from misinformation or a

prescribed reaction. Growing up next to the ocean, sharks certainly instilled fear in the artist and guns seem to elicit his strongest reactions. However, he states that, “neither one are worthy of such a label as ‘killer’, but when the human element is added, unpredictability becomes a threat. The way in which these works are presented, the way the ideas have been distilled, brings almost a whimsical quality to these beasts, hopefully rendering them unthreatening. With this chosen medium, they become an attractor of curiosity, one that brings us closer to our fears by showing these items in an elegant, beautiful way.”
