promote their music.Time allowed: 1 Quarter.

Unit Question: How does advertising manipulate our actions?

Documented evidence:Your documented evidence is like a diary. You start it when you first start making your design and it doesn't end until you have finished making your product. Takes lots of photos, make notes on any modification and add sketches and diagrams.

IntroductionMy client is a rock band composed of 4 musicians. They are a new band,

and only a few people know about them. They want me to help them advertise and promote their band so that they can become more popular

and known. During this semester, I will be working on different ways to advertise their

band. Then I will choose one way which seems the most useful to me to promote them. I will be going through many steps before the end, these

steps are:-Investigation;

-Design;-Plan;

-Create;-Evaluation.

I will also interview my client to know more about what they want and if they have any special requests and specifications.

AOI (Areas Of Interaction)

This project relates to Human Ingenuity because I will design and create an advertisement which will satisfy my

client and meet his specifications and requirements. Human Ingenuity is mostly about creation. I will be doing researches about the different ways to promote this band, ask questions to my client with an interview, then choose

the perfect way to advertise their band. Then I will use my abilities to complete the investigation, design, plan and creation stage. So this project is more about the Human Ingenuity between the 5 different areas of interaction.

Interview: Part I1. Have you already made promotion about your

band before? No. This will be the first time we will give a try. We have already

thought about making one, but we don’t have any ideas about that. So that’s why we invited you to help us.

2. Have you already got an idea of which kind of promotion do you want?

Mm... Not really. We just want the type of advertisement which can be seen by a lot of people. We can support all the kinds of promotion, but we focus on the ‘type’ of fans we want to have. We don’t want old people as our fans. We are a pop music band, so if it’s possible, we want to attract teenagers of around 20 years old and adults as our fans. So please try to

make an advertisement which can be seen mostly by these people.Saturday, November 5, 2011

Page 7: Band Promotion- Final PDF

Interview: Part II.3. How big do you want it to be made?

4. Any comments about the price?

We just want the kind of advertisement that a lot of people can see, once again. The size... It depends where the ad is going to be. A ‘medium’ size. But we don’t need a giant advertisement for example on a billboard. Still, not too small if the ad is going to be on the Internet or newspaper. And,

please, make it beautiful and interesting.

We just started our band, so we don’t have a big budget. But just not too expensive. We never thought about making an

advertisement before, so we have no idea for the ‘normal’ price for any kind of promotion.

Interview: Part III.

5.Last one: do you have any specifications about the time I’m going to take to make this promotion?

Ha ha, no. We don’t need the advertisement directly in these weeks. You can take your time, the important thing is the quality and design. We don’t want you to finish the promotion too soon, you have around

8 weeks. But remember, the quality of the final product is the most important to me. Ok, I know that we didn’t give you a lot of

specifications for our promotion, but think about it: this is the first time we want to make a promotion. If there are too many options,

choose the one that would be the most useful to us. My partners and I have already discussed about the promotion but we didn’t find a lot of specifications. We have confidence on you, that is the reason why we

invited you. Saturday, November 5, 2011

Client Interview Summary

From this interview, I know more specifications asked by the client which will help me to choose the perfect kind of

advertisement and to design it with all these specifications. Now I know that it will be the first time for the band to advertise their group. They don’t want a special kind of

advertisement. I’ve done a list of all the specifications told by the client:

-Can be seen by a lot of young people, around 20 years old.-Size: not too big or too small. ‘Medium’ size.

-Cost: reasonable. They don’t have a big budget. They have no idea how much cost a ‘normal’ advertisement.

-Time: Around 8 weeks, whenever the advertisement is well designed and the quality is good.

Softwares

Pages Blank Paper Microsoft Word

Pages is a very useful tool to create and

design different types of brochure. I will be able to use Apple Pages to design beautiful and interesting brochures

since it is free and already installed on our

computer.Cost: Free+ already

provided (no need to download).

It is the perfect tool to design freely the brochure and make

a draft of it. It is already provided by the school. It is also useful to draw pictures

since we can scan it after we’ve done it. It isn’t always easy to draw with a Bamboo

Tablet or on the computer.Cost: Already provided.

Similar to the software ‘Pages’, it is also useful for designing a brochure, but has less options and themes than Pages. It will maybe be useful to me, not not

as useful as Pages, I am not even sure if I’m going to use it.

However, it is also free and already provided.

Cost: Free+ already provided (no need to download).

Summary of the researches

I focused my researches on the softwares and materials I will be using to design and create my advertisement. The 3 softwares and material will be

each one useful to me. But I would use more often Apple Pages than Microsoft Office Word. Brochure designing is included in these 2

softwares, but as I noticed, Pages has a larger choice for the design, theme, etc... But I will still use Microsoft Word. The A4 paper will also be very useful for me, since it can be scanned then added to the computer after

I’ve done it. And it is easier to make drawings and drafts on a paper than on a drawing tablet (Bamboo) or on computer. It gives me more freedom when I will be designing the promotion. The price of the softwares and material is not a problem at all, the 2 softwares are free and are already

installed on our laptops. And the A4 blank paper is also already provided. Overall, these researches helped me a lot to get more ideas about how am I

going to design my advertisement.

Impacts on the environment

• When printing a brochure, paper is needed, and paper comes from wood. So it means that trees will be cut to make the paper for my brochure. Today, a lot of trees are cut down to produce paper for newspaper, magazines, etc... same as brochure. With less and less trees, less oxygen (o2) will be produced, and more CO2 will be on Earth since the trees ‘eat’ CO2. So these are the impacts on the environment when making a brochure advertisement.

Design Brief

• I will design a promotion for my client’s band. This advertisement will follow the 5 steps of the famous design cycle (Investigation; Design; Plan; Create and Evaluation). The investigation, design and plan steps will be including all the important informations about my promotion:

• - softwares to be used

• - time management

• - quality/design of the product

• - the specifications desired by the client.

• The create part will be done in school technology classes. When finally the promotion will be done, the final product will be evaluated on certain specific points. Then we will be able to start promoting their band.

SpecificationTitle Specification and why Test

Aesthetics The promotion should look interesting and eye-catching for everyone.

I will keep in mind that the advertisement must be eye-catching and interesting when designing

it.

Time The whole project should take 8 weeks. I will create a time table to make sure that the the stages are done before the deadline.

Size It shouldn’t be to big or people wouldn’t be able to carry it around.

I will pay attention to the size of the advertisement when designing the promotion.

Weight It shouldn’t be too heavy or people wouldn’t be able to carry it around.

The weight of an A4 paper is extremely light, so it will not be a problem.

Target Audience People (~20 Years) if possible I will keep in mind that the target audience desired by the band should be around 20 years old.

Function Its function is to promote this band. I will get other brochures and inspect them, so that I can get some ideas.

Purpose Its purpose is to promote this band. I will get other brochures and inspect them, so that I can get some ideas.

Material I will use A4 papers to print my brochure.

The material will be A4 paper.

Security The edges of the paper can’t be too sharp, which can bless people.

I will pay attention to the edges of the paper. If they’re too sharp, they will hurt the readers.

Cost It shouldn’t be too expensive. I will pay attention to the cost which will be used to make the promotion.

Page 18: Band Promotion- Final PDF

Summary on investigation

• The interview was done to give me information about how my client wants the promotion to be made, and all the specifications my client cited.

• With the researches made about the different softwares, I am able to compare them and choose which one suits the best for the promotion.

• The case study helped me to get more ideas for the aesthetics, cost, function, ease of creation about the 3 different ways to advertise, and the pros and cons for each kind.

• The specification points and the testing will be a useful tool which will guide me to make the promotion. When the 6 designs will be drawn, I will evaluate them based on the specification points then I will choose the final design. The testing part will help me to make sure that the promotion meets all my client’s specifications.

Summary of the designs

• Design 1:• It is a simple website design. The problem is that no software is provided to design and create a website so

we have to search a software or a tool by ourself to make the design 1. The target audience is also a problem: everyone can go on the website. There is no way to know ‘how years old is the people visiting the site’ or no way to say ‘if you are more than ~25 years old you can’t visit the site’.

• Design 2:• It is a more complicated website design than the design 1. It is aesthetically pleasing: the ‘rolling’ pages,

music in the background, etc... But the problem is same as for the design 1: no software is provided, and even if I find one suitable for me it will be difficult to make it: the ‘rolling’ slides are big problems. The target audience too, as the design 1 is a problem too. For these two online advertisements, the price will not be a problem: it is free to create a website. Overall, this design could become a very good online advertisement but not in this case.

Saturday, November 5, 2011

Page 29: Band Promotion- Final PDF

Summary Of The Designs: Part II

• Design 3:• This is an advertisement which will be inserted into a magazine. Unlike the designs 1 and 2, the target audience

and the tools will not be a problem. For the target audience, I will be able to choose the genre of magazine I will insert my promotion. The tools are provided: Pages, Microsoft Word and A4 paper (scan after it’s done). The only small problem is that this design may be a bit simple and not very eye-catching. In overall, this is a satisfactory design.

• Design 4:• This is a brochure advertisement. It is somehow eye-catching and aesthetically pleasing if the colors are used in a

good way. The price isn’t a problem: only the print cost to create a brochure. The target audience is the biggest advantage of making a brochure as a promotion: you can choose who you will distribute the brochure to, two choices:

• -choose the people (~20 years old) we will distribute the brochure to

• -go to ‘young people’s places’ and distribute the brochures there. There might be some place where teenagers and people around 20 years old go often.

• The software is already provided (Pages, Microsoft Word, A4 paper (scan too). In overall, this is a really good design of promotion, respecting the customer’s specifications.

Saturday, November 5, 2011

Page 30: Band Promotion- Final PDF

Summary Of The Designs: Part III

• Design 5:• This design is a video advertisement which will be played on TV channels. Video advertisements are fun

to watch, which means eye-catching, and for sure, aesthetically pleasing if the video is well designed and made. Software is provided to make a short video clip: iMovie. The problems now are that it might be hard to make since I’m not very familiar with iMovie so it might maybe not be done before the deadline. The other problem is the cost: advertising on TV channels are expensive. Otherwise, the target audience isn’t a problem: we can choose in which channel we will advertise (for example we will not choose Disney Channel if our target audience is teenager and people ~20 years old). In overall it is a great design too, but not very convenient in this case.

• Design 6:• This design is very similar to the design 5: it is also a video promotion and has almost the same pros and

cons compared to the design 5. The only difference is the design: it is simpler to the design 5, which will be an advantage when making the clip but a disadvantage when playing it on TV channels: people may find it too short and simple. Otherwise for the aesthetics, tools, cost and target audience are very similar to the design 5 so I will not repeat them. In overall this design is just ok, satisfactory. But I already know that I will normally not choose this design for this case (band promotion).

Evaluation Against Specification: Final Chosen Design

Specification Design 4 Comments

Aesthetics O I will make the brochure to be eye-catching. The brochure will certainly be colorful.

Time O Since a brochure doesn’t take a long time to make, I will have all the time I need so I can focus more on the quality.

Size O I will probably use A4 size paper for the brochure.

Weight O I will not encounter problems with weight since a sheet of paper isn’t heavy.

Target Audience O I will be able to choose for whom I want to give the brochure. My target audience will be ~18 years old people.

Function O The function is to advertise a product or service to people.

Purpose O The purpose is to promote the band.

Material O The material will be a piece of paper which is provided.

Cost O The blank paper and the printing cost are included in the cost, which aren’t expensive.

William: His Favorite Design

• I choose design 3 as the best design because:

• - Its Ease of creation ( The design of the brochure is simple, however, eye-catchy. You will have more advantage on the time taken to make the brochure due to how the design is made. And you will have access to useful softwares that is already provided which will help you a lot.

• - Its Aesthetics ( The design of the brochure is elegantly arranged, this means, ( How the information, pictures, backgrounds, headings, is placed)

• - Its Target Audience ( Target audience is one of the most important specifications for a brochure because you can choose and give out the brochure to some people that is 18 years old + due to the Band’s genre of music. ).

Saturday, November 5, 2011

Page 33: Band Promotion- Final PDF

Development+Final Design

I don’t think I will make any changes to that design. I will keep it the same, and I will maybe change it a little bit (the location for the

photos, texts, etc...) when I will make and design it. But for now, I’m satisfied with the design.

• I found out that I will not use Microsoft Word and A4 paper (to draw and scan) to make the brochure. I found Microsoft a bit useless and some trials, I found out that my drawing skills isn’t really good. So I will stick with Pages for the design and editing, Internet for photos.

Evaluation Of The Plan

Honestly, I think the Plan stage in this presentation is just too simple. Too simple to be followed by someone

else. The problem was that creating a brochure is really not complicated, so the step by step plan is

really simple.

CREATE

Saturday, November 5, 2011

Page 42: Band Promotion- Final PDF

Today I chose the design of the brochure. I used the software Pages, which didn’t took a lot of time. Then I spent the rest of the lesson collecting different photos for the promotion’s design. I think I’ve collected enough pictures for the brochure, I will choose the ones that I will take during the next lesson.

Document Evidence 1: 4 Of October Create Stage

Saturday, November 5, 2011

Page 43: Band Promotion- Final PDF

Document Evidence 2 : 5 Of October Create Stage

Today I’ve been sorting the photos that will be used for the brochure. I will add them to the convenient place in the brochure after I finish writing the texts. I have done a very little bit of writing, for the texts which will be posted in the brochure. I will continue writing the next lesson, and finally design (add everything together) when the writing part is done.

Saturday, November 5, 2011

Page 44: Band Promotion- Final PDF

Document Evidence 3 : 6 Of October Create Stage

What I have been working today was the texts that would be added in my brochure. I have already done a bit last lesson, and in this lesson I just had to focus on writing. If I couldn’t finish it today, I would do it as a homework. I had to write ‘good’ information, and other texts without any grammar or spelling errors. The software I used is still Pages.

Saturday, November 5, 2011

Page 45: Band Promotion- Final PDF

Document Evidence 4 : 11 Of October Create Stage

During the weekend, I finished writing texts. During last lesson I wasn’t able to finish so it became a homework. Today I have been designing the brochure: arranging photos, texts, everything. This will take me approximately 2 to 3 lessons. Next lesson I will continue to design the brochure. No problem have been encountered during the creation stage until now.

Saturday, November 5, 2011

Page 46: Band Promotion- Final PDF

Document Evidence 5 : 12 Of October Create Stage

Today, same as yesterday, I’ve been working on the design of the brochure. I added a background for my brochure. I tried different font and color for my texts, but the problem is I can’t find the convenient text color (which is clear, big enough, etc). I will keep working on the design tomorrow since I can’t finish it today.

Saturday, November 5, 2011

Page 47: Band Promotion- Final PDF

Document Evidence 6 : 14 Of October Create Stage

I continued working on the design today. It is almost done, the background (I changed it again), the location of the photos, texts, the text’s font, color, etc… I will still make some modification, during the vacation. In overall, I think I’ve made some good progress during this lesson, but the problem is still the texts’ color: it took me a lot of time to choose the convenient one which is clear enough to be read.

Saturday, November 5, 2011

Page 48: Band Promotion- Final PDF

Document Evidence 7 : 25 Of October Create Stage

Hopefully and finally, I finished the brochure. The design, everything. Today: I inserted photos, texts, played around with the texts’ font and size, etc... Maybe I will still do some

small modifications during next lesson, but however, it is finally done, and I’m glad about it.

Saturday, November 5, 2011

Page 49: Band Promotion- Final PDF

Document Evidence 8 : 26 Of October Create Stage

To be honest, today I’ve done a bit nothing during the whole lesson, I played around with my brochure but no modification have been made. I think the

brochure is really done now. There is one extra lesson for me since my promotion is done, so during next lesson I will certainly work on my Keynote

presentation.

Saturday, November 5, 2011

Page 50: Band Promotion- Final PDF

Document Evidence 9 : 27 Of October Create Stage

Today I’ve been working on my Keynote presentation. I did some improvements and added more informations on certain sections (for

example on the researches in the Investigation stage). I didn’t encounter any problem. I am glad I have some extra time to continue my Keynote

presentation.

Document Evidence 10 : Week-end 29-30 Of October Create Stage

Maybe some people are still working on their

promotion today. Since I have already done my brochure, during this

week-end I will not touch anything about

technology class in my laptop. I played video games. Finally some

break.

EVALUATION

Saturday, November 5, 2011

Page 53: Band Promotion- Final PDF

Evaluating My Performance At Each Stage Of The Design Cycle

• Investigation:• The investigation stage is the beginning of the project, which is

designing an advertisement for a band. In the investigation stage, I have done an introduction about this project, an interview with my client, brainstormed ideas, done case studies about three different kinds of advertisement, researched about the softwares and tools I will be using, the specifications of the product, etc... I think the investigation is very important since it contains all the informations about the product we will make. I think I put enough effort in this stage since the investigation stage is one of the most important stage for me, enough information is given. Maybe I could improve more on the case study, specifications and impacts of the society sections. But in overall, I think this stage of the design cycle is well done.

Saturday, November 5, 2011

Page 54: Band Promotion- Final PDF

Evaluating My Performance At Each Stage Of The Design Cycle

• Design:

• The design stage includes the designs I’ve made. The six designs are the first draft of different kinds of advertisement: online promotion (website), print promotion (the advertisement in a magazine, brochure) and video/broadcast promotion (short video clip on TV). When I have done the draft of the six advertisements, I talked about their pros and cons. Each design have different pros and cons. I also made a brief summary for each design, an evaluation against specification table and have finally chosen the convenient design for me in this project. My classmate, William have chosen his favorite design and explained why. At the end of the design stage, I talked about my final chosen design: a table with the evaluation against specification table only about the chosen design and its final design. I’m satisfied with this stage, but I can still make improvements for the six designs: I could add more details, and even add color to them. But in overall I think this stage is done well enough.

Saturday, November 5, 2011

Page 55: Band Promotion- Final PDF

Evaluating My Performance At Each Stage Of The Design Cycle

• Plan:• The plan is probably the shortest stage in this Keynote presentation. It

contains a Gantt Chart, a step-by-step instruction, a list of tools that are going to be used to design and create the promotion and an evaluation of the plan. Honestly, the plan is the design cycle stage on which I’ve put the less effort, since I don’t really think that the plan stage in the design cycle is very useful, so I focused more on other stages. I may develop and improve the step by step instructions. They are a bit too simple to be followed by someone else. So in overall, this stage of the design cycle is just ok.

Saturday, November 5, 2011

Page 56: Band Promotion- Final PDF

Evaluating My Performance At Each Stage Of The Design Cycle

• Create:• The create stage is all about the designing and creation of our promotion. We

have got 10 full lessons in total to design and create our promotion, at the end of each lesson we need to make a document evidence, explaining what have we done during that lesson, and, if there are, problems we have faced during that lesson. I think I explained well what I’ve done during each lesson with screenshots. In overall, I think the create stage is well done.

Evaluating My Performance At Each Stage Of The Design Cycle

• Evaluation:• The evaluation stage does include evaluation for each stage of the design

cycle in this presentation. It says what have we done, what we could have done better, etc...

I will keep in mind that the target audience desired by the band should

be around 20 years old.

I will get other brochures and inspect them, so that I can get some ideas.

The material will be A4 paper.

I will pay attention to the edges of the paper. If they’re too sharp, they will hurt the readers.

I will pay attention to the cost which will be used to make the promotion.

When distributing the brochure, we can choose the target audience: to who give the brochure. We can also go

to the place where ‘young people’ to distribute them.

Yes, the brochure does promote this band.

Yes, the brochure does promote this band.

The brochure will be with an A4 paper.

The edges of an A4 paper are not very sharp, but honestly, I

didn’t pay attention to the safety. However, the edges of the A4 paper wouldn’t really

hurt a lot someone.

The print cost of this brochure isn’t expensive. The cost will

not be a problem.

Classmate: Joey’s Comment About the Final Product

• I like the way you arrange all your informations and pictures in the poster. The name of your band and the font is also good. I also like your idea of the member talking about what their professions are and your usage of the colors are nice and I really like the concept of the whole.

Successful Points

• For me, the most successful point is the create stage. First of all, I could finish the brochure before the deadline, even earlier. I did not encounter ‘big’ problems during the creation, only some small problem which have been solved easily (for example, the font of the texts). I also for me think that the document evidences are well done, showing and explaining what I’ve been doing during each lesson. The investigation stage is also a successful stage but I still think that the creation stage is done better.

Least Successful Points

• I think the Plan stage is the least successful section in this project. The Gantt chart have been made a bit quickly without big effort, and the step by step plan is too simple too, which make the plan stage the least successful section. Even if it is my first time to use a Gantt Chart, I would focus more on it. The step by step plan too, even if the steps of creating a brochure are somehow simple, I could make it more precise.

Problems

• During the creation stage I really did not encounter any big problem, only small problem which are easy to solve. The only problem was the background of the brochure: the background’s color could really affect the texts’ font: the texts became hard to read. So I had to change the background and the texts’ color a lot to make the text readable. But if I always put the same color for the text, it would be boring. Somehow I managed to get them done.

Modifications/Improvements

• I think if I had more time, I could change the background to a more ‘living’ background with a more attractive one. Not a plain-color background but if possible, a one with other small pictures inside it. As I already said before, the background is the main problem: more the background is beautiful, more it is to find a convenient color for the texts, for the texts to be read clearly.

The impact on the environment

• When printing a brochure, paper is needed, and paper comes from wood. So it means that trees will be cut to make the paper for my brochure. Today, a lot of trees are cut down to produce paper for newspaper, magazines, etc... same as brochure. With less and less trees, less oxygen (o2) will be produced, and more CO2 will be on Earth since the trees ‘eat’ CO2. So these are the impacts on the environment when making a brochure advertisement.
