At Avalon Press we are dedicated to producing music for winds that meets the most exacting standards. Our catalog is small by design, as we publish only a limited number of new works each year. Our music covers a variety of compositional styles from a list of new and exciting composers, and we are sure you will find something in here that both you and your band will enjoy.

All of our composers have been, or currently are, working band directors. They know the unique needs of a school music program, and how best to score for ensembles from beginner to advanced. Each of our composers have written commissioned works for both young and mature bands, and are available to create music suited for your group.

Aspirations$45.00This piece features an 8 bar melody and a contrasting countermelody that are varied in both melody and timbre. A strong and intense middle section gives way to a recapitula-tion of the main theme. A very nice overture-type work for concert or festival.CO10008

Bellerophon’s Ride$45.00Bellerophon was a hero of Greek mythology, who, while rid-ing upon Pegasus, slew the Chimera. This overture captures the excitement of that ride, while the beautifully melodic middle section will show off your band’s musicianship. The instrumentation is kept purposely small, and liberal cues and doubling allow even small bands to sound big and full.CO10013

Rob Tucker

Call of Significance, The$45.00This work was written for the Howard Payne University Symphonic Band in memory of Dr. Al Tucker.CO10108

O Holy Night$50.00

O Holy Night (“Cantique de Noël”) is a well-known Christmas carol composed by Adolphe Adam in 1847 to the French poem “Minuit, chrétiens” by Placide Cappeau (1808-1877). Cappeau was asked to write a Christmas poem by a parish priest, and over the years it has become a standard modern carol. This setting for band removes some of the obstacles found in most band arrangements of this work, and leaves only the pure warmth of the original. Playable by almost any level of high school ensemble.CO10164

Clancy Weeks

Star Spangled Banner, The$35.00A fresh arrangement of our National Anthem written with class and reverenceCO10165

Clancy Weeks

To Touch the Wind$50.00Dedicated to the memory of Julie Gilstrap, a student who was taken long before her time. The melody for this piece comes from an old Celtic ballad “Down by the Sally Gardens,” but the title comes from the quote by naturalist Hal Borland : “There are no limits to either time or space, only those such as man may make for himself. I have but to touch the wind to know these things.”CO10123

Kenneth Booker

Wayfaring Stranger$45.00This work was commissioned by the Highland Middle School Honors Band, Eagle Mountain Saginaw I.S.D., in memory of Joseph Akeman. This is a lovely work that can be performed by many young bands.CO10122

We Commit These Souls$50.00Band arrangement of the woodwind choir.CO10161

Black Water Scenes$70.00This four-movement programmatic work depicts the sights and sounds in and around the “black water” areas of East Texas. Listen carefully, and you’ll even hear the birds in the trees.CO10104

Perpetual Motion$80.00The title of this piece indicates that the opening melody should be thought of as a continuous unbroken line from start to finish. Each section of the ensemble (with the exception of the trombones) take their turns with the melody, with numerous solos sprinkled throughout. A little polymeter and polytonality add to the interest and excitement of this band and audience pleaser.CO10005

Kenneth Booker

Suite for Band$70.00One of Ken’s best works—each move-ment is beautifully self-contained.CO10096

Clancy Weeks

Variation Suite$80.00With just a couple of exceptions, every melody in this suite is based on the sixteen measure opening theme of the first movement. The second movement features soprano saxo-phone (though cued for oboe or clarinet) with a beautifully lyrical melody, while the third movement is a toe-tapper from start to finish! Don’t tell anyone, but even though the third movement is titled Scherzo, it’s really just a 6/8 da capo march--with a twist!CO10002

Areopagus$95.00Areopagus was the supreme tribunal of ancient Athens that would meet on the hill of the same name. The form of the piece is a standard classical rondo, and the melodic mate-rial is primarily modal. The middle section features French horns, while the return of the opening theme is sparked by

6

the percussion section. The coda is a rollicking tour-de-force of overlapping themes, keys, and meters. Great fun for the entire band!CO10006

Cripple Creek$90.00In the summer of 1891 Bob Womack discovered gold in the Cripple Creek region of Colorado near Colorado Springs, setting off the Cripple Creek Gold Rush. In his euphoria (otherwise known as a drunken stupor) he sold his claim for $500 in cash. By the fall of 1891 the Cripple Creek Gold Camp had grown up around the area and was teeming with hopeful miners.

The first movement of this work, Poverty Gulch (so named because Bob Womack had search the area for 12 years without ever finding gold), is a depiction of one woman’s accidental discovery in that area (while elk watching, of all things) of a particular-ly rich vein—ending with her sneaking back to town with her hidden samples to stake a claim.

A Chuisla Mo Chroi (the pulse of my heart) is an impression of the prospector’s emotions as they search for their heart’s desire. There is a longing and heartache that all prospectors feel—sometimes for the strike they never make, or for the girl they left behind.

Mining the Mollie Kathleen is more march than jig. It is a simple description of the elation all prospectors must feel when they make that first discovery of gold.CO10162

Clancy Weeks

On Infinity’s Shore$70.00This exciting work begins with a sparkling mass of sound from the upper woodwinds and mallet percussion. The first five notes in the flutes outline the basic motif from which the entire work is derived. The recapitulation is the reverse of the beginning, creating a bow-form ABCBA with an extended coda that sprints all the way to the end!CO10012
