This documentation covers the new features in Band-in-a-Box Versions 2011.5 and 2011 for Windows. - Chapter 2 is a Summary of the New Features. - Chapter 3 is a QuickStart Tutorial. - Chapters 4, 5, 6, and 7 describe major new features. Over 70 New Features in Band-in-a-Box 2011 and 2011.5! Band-in-a-Box 2011.5 for Windows is here with over 20 cool new features! Weve been busy and have added some great new features and new RealTracks to Band-in-a-Box!Compared to version 2011, this adds 20 new features and 101 new RealTracks. Weve added a new Mixer window, allowing you to quickly set volumes, panning, reverb, tone and patches. There is BB Remote, a new app for iPhone for use with your desktop version of Band-in-a-Box 2011.5.BB Remote is a remote control to choose/play/mix songs on the desktop version.(Note: BB Remote is a separate application from our Band-in-a-Box for iPhone/Android app). There are RealTracks enhancements, including support for Pedal Bass, a Same But Different feature (insuring that multiple versions of the same RealTrack always play different riffs), smoother playing in waltzes, better pushes, and more simple variations. You can now audition a style in the StylePicker without changing your existing arrangement, by using the [Web Demo] button, which plays a streaming demo from the web. There are 101 new RealTracks available (compared to Band-in-a-Box 2011), including great: -Jazz (J azz Funk, Gypsy J azz Waltz/Ballads, Organ soloing, and no-bass organ, NY Piano, and Solo Accompaniment Guitar) -Pop (Soul, Celtic Hornpipes/Slip jigs, Basses, Crossover, Pop Waltz) -and Country (Pedal Steel soloing Paul Franklin, Brent Mason Guitar, Praise and Worship Believe/Power, Country Swing Piano/Fiddle) Plus 50 New Features for Band-in-a-Box 2011!In Band-in-a-Box 2011 we made big improvements to the sound of the RealTracks so that they would sound more natural over a much (3x) wider range of tempos. And we made the size of the RealTracks much smaller, so that they now only take up 30% of the space that they used to.The new versions (2011 and 2011.5) will shrink the size of your existing RealTracks too, so that you can free up lots of space on your drive. We also added a huge number of new RealTracks (101), with great new Jazz, Pop, and Country Styles. Weve made an iPhone version of Band-in-a-Box, available from the Apple App Store. It connects to your Windows desktop version of Band-in-a-Box 2011, and allows you to generate, play, and save songs on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad - with the same high quality RealTracks sound! Weve enhanced RealTracks, so that you can now have RealTracks styles changes within a song, generate Soloist Medleys - solos that play RealTracks instruments during the solos, and more.Theres a Scales Wizard for practicing, which generates scales for any chord progression.New StylePicker Filters show you only the styles that match your search criteria. And many more Chapter 2: Summary of New Features5Chapter 2: Summary of New Features Weve been busy and have added some great new features and new RealTracks to Band-in-a-Box!Compared to version 2011, this adds 20 new features and 101 new RealTracks. Band-in-a-Box 2011.5 Features and additions Weve added a new Mixer window, allowing you to quickly set volumes, panning, reverb, tone and patches. You can now audition a style in the StylePicker by using the [Web Demo] button, which plays a streaming demo from the web. The Mixer floats on top of the current window, so you can place it wherever its convenient to make quick and easy adjustments to your Band-in-a-Box track settings. To open the Mixer window, click on the Mixer button on the toolbar, or choose (main menu) Windows | Mixer Window or use hot key Ctrl+Shift+M.This opens the Mixer window. Chapter 2: Summary of New Features6 Use the tabs to select Patches/Volume/Panning/Tone or Reverb. Click on the [S] button to Solo, or [M] to mute a track. Click on a part name to open up a menu, allowing you to set a patch, mute or un-mute. Use the slider to set the value. Click at the right of the slider to enter a specific value The [A] Auto button, if pressed, will auto-resize the window during playback, so that it is out of the way of the chord sheet, but returns to normal size when play is stopped. The [+] button enlarges the Mixer to the size last set by the user. The [] button shrinks the Mixer to the default small size which is at the top right. You can enlarge the mixer to any size by dragging the bottom right corner of the mixer. The controls change size when you do this. BB Remote remote control for desktop Band-in-a-Box for Windows 2011.5 BB Remote is an app for your iPhone. It is used as a remote control to control your existing desktop version of Band-in-a-Box for Windows 2011.5 or higher. The sounds will come out of the desktop program, not the iPhone. You must have the desktop version of Band-in-a-Box for Windows 2011.5 to use the program at all. Note:There is another application for iPhone that we make, called Band-in-a-Box for iPhone that lets you generate new songs with the sound coming from the iPhone - and it isn't a remote control like this one.More about Band-in-a-Box for iPhone at pgmusic.com/help100 If you use Band-in-a-Box for Windows, you may want to be somewhere else other than sitting at your PC as you play songs. For example, you might want to sit at the piano, or at your music stand, or be sitting on the couch with your guitar in hand. The BB Remote app installs to your iPhone (via the iPhone app store), and then connects to the desktop version of Band-in-a-Box for Windows 2011.5.

Chapter 2: Summary of New Features7Note: To allow BBRemote to connect, make sure that Band-in-a-Box Server is running on your desktop Windows PC.You need to have a program called C:\bb\bbhelper\BandInABoxServer.exe running. If it is running, you will see a musical note icon on your Windows system tray in the right lower corner of the windows taskbar. You can run or install the server from the main Band-in-a-Box Windows program, using the menu item Windows | BB2Go.you need to have BandInABoxServer.exe running in the system tray- sees pgmusic.com/help102 for details) The BB Remote app has different screens, accessible by swiping the screen to the left/right. BB Remote Main Screen- Chords View The Chords view lets you see the chords of the song, and the current bar of the song highlights during playback. For example, you could be seated at your piano, far from the desktop PC, and be loading in and playing songs, with the sound coming from your desktop PC, but you see the chords and current bar on the iPhone. BB Remote Conductor Window This allows fine control of playback, including jumping to sections, choruses, #bars etc. and looping. Chapter 2: Summary of New Features8 Mixer Window BB Remote The Mixer window of BB Remote for iPhone allows you to mute/solo or adjust volumes, panning, reverb, tone or patches of the desktop program in real time. Patch Selection BB Remote The patch selection window of BB Remote for iPhone allows you to view or select patches. If you press play again, the changed patches will sound in the song. Chapter 2: Summary of New Features9 File Menu BB Remote Server Connect Window BB Remote RealTracks Enhancements Same-But-Different That insures that, if you have 2 (or more) of the same RealTracks on different tracks, that they will never play the same thing at the same time. If they did it would cancel each other out, and it would sound like one person. To use it, it just works, there are no settings to use, and it just makes the tracks different. For example, setup a strumming guitar part, using RealTracks 362. Setup the same RealTrack on a few different tracks. Pan them differently (left, right, center). Then press Play. Youll notice that they never play the same, so that it sounds like 3 different players.Pedal Bass supported for RealTracks.Bigger Soloists are supported. Some of our soloists have more riffs than previous RealTracks, so they sound better. These soloists require BB 2011.5 to work. Better pushes in RealTracks, especially over songs with chord changes every 2 beats. These are the natural pushes that occur automatically (not the ones you get by putting ^carets before chord names), and they will sound more natural. Waltzes are improved with RealTracks, better playing when there are 2 chords per bar, and better endings. Better endings when there are time signature changes in the song. Web Demos You can now audition a style in the StylePicker without changing your existing arrangement, by using the [Web Demo] button, which plays a streaming demofrom the web.For example, if you see a style like _J SWINGG J azz Swing w/ Electric Guitar, you can hear what it sounds like without loading in the style. This is useful because you hear an audio demo of a good example of the style in action. It is also useful because it can demo a style that you dont have, or you can compare to make sure that yours sounds the same as it is supposed to sound. Chapter 2: Summary of New Features10 Q:What advantage should I be expecting by using the [Web Demo] button that I don't already have for reviewing a style via the [Load Song Demo] button? A:The web demo has the following advantages over the [Load Song Demo] button. It will: 1.Play a demo "as its supposed to sound" so you will be sure of what the intended sounds are. 2.Play, even if you are missing some of the RealTracks needed for the style. 3.Play without messing up the song that you are working on by loading in a new one, allowing you to more quickly try out different styles. Other Enhancements StylePicker filter added:Display styles if RealTracks are not present You may want to not display styles if the RealTracks for the styles are not present on your system. This filter allows you to hide or show these styles. RealDrums can now be chosen from the RealTracks Picker. Pressing the [RD] (RealDrums) button on the RealTracks Picker (Assign RealTracks to Tracks dialog) allows you to select a RealDrums, rather than needing to a separate dialog for that. The current RealDrums set in use is now displayed on the RealTracks Picker. When [Save Style] is pressed in the RealTracks Picker the current drum volume will also apply to the style. Also, the RealTracks Picker can be chosen from the Drums radio button right-click menu. Chapter 2: Summary of New Features11Drum Styles button in RealDrums Picker enhanced. It now shows more styles, including all styles that use that particular Real Drum style, including RealStyles and MIDI styles. Guitar Tutor Enhancement If copying a Guitar Tutor part to Melody or Soloist track, the track type now gets auto-set to the correct tab and fretboard. So if you are using a ukulele tutor, you can copy and see the tab for ukulele chords. Selecting a new style wont necessarily wipe out song based RealTracks/Drums selections. If you hold down the Shift key when loading a style (from any style selection dialog), then the currently selected RealTracks and RealDrums wont get wiped out. If you load a new style (without holding Shift as above), this wipes out any song-selected RealTracks and RealDrums (unless Shift is held). Now, after loading the style, you can choose Undo, and the previous RealTracks and RealDrums come back. In the StylePicker, if you choose override drums while in the StylePicker, this won't wipe out the RealDrums when you load the style.Miscellaneous Bug Fixes: Fixed:Soloist 1207 Fiddle, Gypsy Ballad, was sometimes dropping out. Fixed:Yellow Message during render was sometimes saying completed, prior to normalization completed. Fixed:Render dialog was sometimes getting hidden behind the main screen during render. IPhone/Android version:Fixed: If generating songs from the iPhone version, if tracks are frozen, will regenerate the tracks (because frozen data is not stored on iPhone/Android version).Fixed: 7sus chord sometimes not working from iPhone/Android version Band-in-a-Box 2011 New Features Weve made big improvements to the sounds of the RealTracks, so that they sound more natural over a much wider range of tempos with the lastique Pro V2 time stretching engine by zplane.development.These improvements are built-in, so theres nothing you need to do to get them working.Your existing songs will just sound better over a much wider range of tempos. Please watch the demo videos for audio examples of the improvements. Weve made the size of the RealTracks much smaller so that they now only take up 30% of the space that they used to.After you install the program, you can run the feature in the RealTracks Settings dialog (Preferences), which will shrink the size of your RealTracks folders. The previous Band-in-a-Box 2010.5 Everything Pak had 100GB of RealTracks; this now shrinks to 30GB.The Audiophile version also Chapter 2: Summary of New Features12 shrinks by 70%, so that it is only 30% of the previous size. And the audio fidelity is improved, since it sounds better over a much wider range of tempos with the lastique Pro V2 time stretching engine! Weve made an iPhone version of Band-in-a-Box, available from the Apple App Store. The Band-in-a-Box iPhone version works by connecting to your Windows desktop version of Band-in-a-Box 2011 and allows you to generate, play, and save songs on your iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad.And your iPhone generated songs have the same high quality RealTracks sound. If you have a copy of Band-in-a-Box 2011 for Windows, then with the Band-in-a-Box iPhone version you can: Quickly transfer your existing library of songs from BB Desktop to BB iPhone, including chordsheets and audio (M4A).See the chordsheets and play the songs anytime on your iPhone, without re-connecting to the Band-in-a-Box desktop.Enter songs from scratch on your BB iPhone by typing in chord symbols to the song. Generate audio on your BB iPhone for the songs by pressing play. The songs play on the iPhone and are stored on the iPhone as M4A files. This connects across your home network (LAN) or the Internet (from anywhere) to your desktop version of Band-in-a-Box. Send songs from BB iPhone to BB Desktop. The iPhone version communicates with Band-in-a-Box for Windows using a utility program called Band-in-a-Box Server (c:\bb\bbhelper\BandinaBoxServer.exe).This program runs in the system tray (lower right of Windows taskbar). The iPhone version will see the BB2Go folder (c:\bb\BB2Go).Any Band-in-a-Box songs that you put in this folder are visible to the BB iPhone. You can send files back and forth from BB iPhone to Band-in-a-Box for Windows, and the files go to the BB2Go folder. You can add audio to the Band-in-a-Box files in the BB2Go folder from the Band-in-a-Box Windows menu with the BB2Go command, and select the files that you want to have MP4/M4A audio added. You can also generate the audio from the iPhone version. Note that these features require QuickTime for Windows to be installed, which you can download from www.apple.com. More documentation for the BB iPhone version is available at http://www.pgmusic.com/help100/. Weve added a huge number of new RealTracks (101), with great new Jazz, Pop, and Country Styles. 33 New Jazz RealTracks! These include: J azz Swing Piano comping and soloing with NY J azz great Mike LeDonne.Vibes Swing/Bossa comping and soloing with Steve Nelson.Gypsy J azz: J ohn J orgenson (guitar), Gonzalo Bergara (guitar), Tim Kliphuis (violin), Simon Planting (bass), and Rick Reed (drums). Smooth J azz Piano Soloing from J eff Lorber. Smooth J azz Guitar with Dwight Sills.Swing J azz Guitar with Oliver Gannon. and existing J azz RealTracks have been enhanced with more natural phrasing (more pushes), better playing over non-J azz chords (triads), RealCharts notation for some Acoustic Bass parts, and options for simpler playing in some RealTracks.See below for details. 35 New Pop/Rock/Folk RealTracks! These include: Celtic (Irish) J igs and Reels: Guitar, Piano, Bass, Bodhran (percussion). Reggae: Guitar, Organ, Bass, Drums. Calypso: Guitars (2), Accordion, Bass, Drums. Pop Waltz, Hard Rock Waltz, and more. Brent Mason Pop/Rock Guitar Soloing (3 styles). Chapter 2: Summary of New Features1333 New Country RealTracks! These include: Praise and Worship: Styles: Shining and Uplifting - 14 RealTracks (Piano, Synth, Bass, Guitar, Drums). Brent Mason Pop/Rock Guitar Soloing (4 styles). Tex Mex Styles: 2-beat and Country (Accordion, Bass, Guitar, Drums). Existing Jazz RealTracks are enhanced.Phrasing is improved, with more pushes to sound more natural.Playing over non-J azz chords (triads) is improved.RealCharts notation, bass tab, and on-screen bass fretboard now displays for some of the J azz Swing Acoustic Bass RealTracks. Some styles have better playing over m6 and 6th chords (e.g. the new Gypsy J azz styles). Some RealTracks have a simpler variation with less complex playing (e.g. Acoustic Bass J azz Swing). Change of RealTracks Styles at any Bar.With previous versions of Band-in-a-Box, you were limited to one RealTracks style per song. Now you can change styles with RealTracks at any bar.J ust select the style in the Edit | Edit Settings for Current Bar dialog. For example, switch from J azz Swing to Bossa style at any bar.MultiStyles (with up to 16 substyles) can now be made with RealTracks.Change of individual RealTracks instrument can be added to any track at any bar.You can insert a specific RealTracks instrument at any bar to create a customized performance. Soloist Medleys, where the RealTracks is made to switch instruments every N bars or every chorus. For example, you can add a Bluegrass Medley Soloist that switches between solos from Mandolin, Guitar, Banjo, and Fiddle every 4 bars.Or a J azz Medley Soloist that switches between Alto Sax, Trumpet, Piano, and Guitar solos every chorus.Or insert Silence as one of the instruments, which allows you to play your own instrument.Use the pre-existing Soloist Medleys that we make by simply choosing a RealTracks, or create a custom one yourself on any track. Multiple RealTracks at the same time on the same track. You can add up to 10 RealTracks to play simultaneously on the same track. This is useful if you want to generate a lot of RealTracks, the theoretical limit would be 7 tracks x 10 per track =70 RealTracks instruments playing at the same time.Re-Generate part of a Soloist track, without erasing the existing part. This allows you to customize your Soloist track by regenerating parts of the solo with the same or different RealTracks. For example, generate a 4-bar clarinet solo at bar 9.Then generate an 8-bar flute solo at bar 49.The file plays back with both solos intact. Options to auto-replace MIDI styles with RealTracks styles. If you have made a lot of songs using older MIDI styles, and would prefer that they play with RealTracks, you can now do this easily by selecting the menu option Styles | Auto Replace MIDI styles with RealTracks. Then, if you have the needed RealTracks installed, your MIDI style will be intelligently replaced with a RealTracks style. There is also a manual option to do this on as-needed basis, disable the feature for a certain song, or to reverse it if you prefer the MIDI style. Triple-Time RealTracks have been added. These allow you to use fast waltz RealTracks as slow 4/4 RealTracks (with a 12/8 feel). We have made some new 12/8 RealStyles that use this feature. RealTracks can be made as Half-Time/Double-Time/Triple-Time, so it is easier to select them, and they show up in the RealTracks Picker with tempos indicating when they can be used. For example, Alto Sax, tempo 140 will also show up in the RealTracks picker as Alto Sax, tempo 70 [Double-Time] so you can easily choose it. Chapter 2: Summary of New Features14 Any RealTracks can be made as a Bluesy RealTracks by selecting this checkbox in the RealTracks Picker.Bluesy RealTracks will play more using blues scales (e.g. Bb note on a C chord). RealTracks sound more musical when stretched to extreme tempos. In addition to the major audio improvements when tempo is stretched by lastique Pro V2, the RealTracks soloists sound more musical when stretched to extreme tempos. This is because musicians tend to play more ahead/behind the beat at slower/faster tempos. This is a done automatically. New Practicing Feature: Change tempo of all loaded songs by X.When this is set, song tempo will be increased (or decreased) by the specified amount, allowing you to bump up all of your tempos easily when practicing lots of songs, or in a jukebox mode. Option to change all songs in a folder to your Default Mix.This would insure that all of your songs have the same mix of Volume, Reverb, and Pan settings. MP4 and M4A files are now supported.MP4 and M4A files are the popular high-quality format used by Apple in iTunes. These MP4/M4A features require QuickTime for Windows to be installed from www.apple.com. You can open MP4/M4A files in Band-in-a-Box using File | Open. You can save (render) files as MP4/M4A using Drag-and-drop (DAW) from the Combo button to the Windows desktop (or to the Drop button at the top left of the Band-in-a-Box main screen). You can also save from theSoundTrack window, or the Render to Audio dialog (.WAV button).Scales Wizard added. When students are practicing J azz tunes, it is helpful to see the scales that are used for each chord. The Scale Wizard allows you to easily generate these scales, which appear as notation on the Soloist track.Options include Instrument Range, Patch Selection, J azzy Mode (will use Lydian dominant scales for some 7th chords), and Diatonic Mode (keeps scales relative to the song key).Menu items on the Soloist menu allow you to generate scales for a certain song, or generate them for all loaded songs.View the scales in the notation or the on-screen guitar and piano. StylePicker Enhancements New StylePicker Filters show you only the styles that match your search terms. These help you to select the style that you want, by allowing you to specify: Even/Swing feel, 8ths/16ths, tempo range, #of instruments, specific instruments (e.g. styles with Banjo), specific RealTracks Artists, RealDrums Artists,Real styles or MIDI styles. For example, if you are searching for a Jazz Ballad style that is all RealTracks, has bass, drums, and guitar, works for a tempo of 60, with Swing 8ths you can set this filter and then only see styles that match these criteria, instead of a list of thousands of styles. New StylePicker Columns added #of instruments in style, e.g. 4. Whether any required RealTracks, RealDrums are not installed, e.g. NA. Whether a RealTracks substitute for a MIDI style is available, e.g. sub. The StylePicker display is wider on bigger monitors. Auto-Generated style memo added for each style. This lists names of all instruments, #of instruments, RealTracks/RealDrums used, whether any required RealTracks or RealDrums are missing, and more. Example Memo: Chapter 2: Summary of New Features15_BOSAMDF.STY. Bossa Med slow FreeComp Gt (110RS) All RealTracks. Trio.RD: BossaTerryClarke^1-Brushes , Terry Clarke RT921: Bass, Acoustic, Bossa Ev 110, Neil Swainson RT923: Guitar, Electric, Rhythm BossaFreeComp Ev 110, Oliver Gannon Other New Features include: Easier Entry of Guitar Notation on Notation Window. If you hold down the number keys 1-6 as you click on a note, then the note will get inserted on MIDI channels 11 to 16, which are the guitar strings from high E to low E.If you also hold down the Q key, the note gets inserted as a bend. You can also click on notes on the guitar to insert guitar notation when in Editable Notation mode. RealCharts Notation and the Guitar fretboard are improved for some guitar styles (e.g. Brent Mason). Now you can see bends in blue on the guitar fretboard. RealDrums pushes are quieter, and RealDrums pushes and shots velocities are now adjustable in the RealDrums Settings dialog. You can now get a list printed out of current contents of the RealTracks Picker dialog.Hold the Shift key and press the [Update] button. Playing from a certain bar in a certain chorus is faster, as the right-click menu now shows the chorus options without a submenu. The Select Soloist dialog has a [Show All] button that removes any filters. The Soloist Editor dialog now allows editing of many RealTracks parameters. On the first run of Band-in-a-Box, the program will auto-hook up to Coyote Wavetable, without requiring the user to visit the MIDI Drivers dialog. Audio-related BT0 files are no longer generated (which was a time consuming procedure when using the audio track, or Audio Chord Wizard). Now BT1 files get generated, which are generated very quickly. Render options for individual wave files.Instead of always making stereo files, there is an option to match the stereo/mono type of the original RealTracks file. Chapter 3:QuickStart Tutorial16 Chapter 3:QuickStart Tutorial The previous chapter described the operation of the new features added to Band-in-a-Box 2011.5.Here are the new features from version 2011.Lets take a look around the program. Tutorial for Band-in-a-Box 2011 for Windows Welcome to BB 2011 for Windows!Weve been working hard on new features. This tutorial will be a quick tour around the program, to show you some of the newest features. This tutorial assumes that you are already familiar with previous versions of Band-in-a-Box. First off, weve made big improvements to the sounds of RealTracks and RealDrums. They sound much better over a wider range of tempos. To hear the improvements, load in a song with RealTracks (there are lots in the Real Tracks Demos folder).Start the song playing, and then change the tempo as the song plays.Notice how the sound is much more natural over a wide range of tempos. Next, if you have an iPhone, you get the Band-in-a-Box iPhone app, and use it along with BB 2011.To do this, go the App Store, and download the Band-in-a-Box app. Then, on the Windows desktop machine, make sure that the Band-in-a-Box Server app is running. If it is running, you will see its icon (a musical note) in the system tray, and when you mouse over, it will say Band-in-a-Box Server. If it isnt running, then run Band-in-a-Box, choose menu-Windows-BB2Go, and choose Run Band-in-a-Box Server Now.If you have Firewall or Anti-Virus programs, they will likely produce some warning when the server is run for the first time. This is because the Server contacts a program (iPhone BB) outside of your computer. So ignore the warnings, and reply yes if it asks you to grant permissions to Band-in-a-Box Server. Then, you can run the BB iPhone app, on the iPhone BB, choose File-Server to connect with the desktop Server program, and then youre in business! You can then transfer songs from BB desktop (in c:\bb\bb2Go folder), and generate songs on the iPhone.More details and videos at www.pgmusic.com/help100 Now lets check out some of the new RealTracks. To do this, open files from the RealTracks Demos folder. There are now 121 sets of RealTracks, with the newest 101 RealTracks found in sets 102 to 121.So load in demo songs from folders with names like c:\bb\RealTracks Demos\RealTracks102 Demos.Rock/Pop/Folk fans should try out the 102-108 set demos, with great guitar soloing from Nashvilles guitar legend Brent Mason. And we have Celtic reel and jig styles. Jazz fans should make sure to check out sets 109 to 115.These include new J azz Piano files from NY pianist Mike LeDonne, and the vibes from Steve Nelson. Also check out the Gypsy J azz Styles, with great guitar, violin, bass, and drums tracks. Country fans should try out the demos from sets 116 to 121.These include Praise and Worship styles, TexMex, and great country guitar soloing from Brent Mason. Now Lets take a Quick Tour Around the Program. Open up the StylePicker. This is where you choose styles. You will notice that there are some changes.Chapter 3:QuickStart Tutorial17The top category lists All available styles.Choose this, so you see all styles. There is a Filter available now, that lets you narrow down your search for styles. Lets try this out, by searching for styles that use RealTracks that may work over a slow tempo J azz Ballad, and also contain Guitar.Press the [Filter] button. In the Style Filter dialog, select the parameters for this J azz style, which would be: 8ths notes, swing feel, tempo =65, and then set the genre to J azz. Then press OK, and the list will now only be styles that you are looking for - namely slow ballads that contain guitar, and are RealStyles! On the StylePicker, you will notice some other improvements. There are column heading with descriptive fly-by hints about the columns. There is a style memo for each style, that lists the instruments used, and whether the needed RealTracks are present. New Columns in the StylePicker show you how the #of instruments in each style, as well as whether all needed RealTracks for a style are present. The Filter button (as youve already seen), as well as the Show All button that clears the Filter. Now lets shift gears, and load in a MIDI song from the c:\bb\styles00 folder.Load in the song. This is an old song that uses a MIDI J azz Swing style ZZJ AZZ. You will then see this yellow message. This tells you that you can easily switch this to RealTracks.

Press the RealTracks button, and choose Find a RealTracks Replacement For this style you will then get the _J AZFRED.STY loaded in, which is a RealTracks replacement. Chapter 3:QuickStart Tutorial18 Now Lets Make a Soloist Medley A Soloist Medley is when the soloists are changing during the song. When band members are soloing, they typically change every N bars, or every chorus. So lets try out one of the Soloist Medleys that comes up Band-in-a-Box, and then we will make a custom one. Continuing with the song that we just loaded in, lets add a Medley Soloist to the Strings Track.Press the RealTracks Picker dialog, and then select the Strings Track. Now type a filter with the word Medley so that we only see Medleys. Sort them by tempo.Pick one that works at our song tempo of 140. Choose #1323.This has a Medley of Sax, Trombone, Trumpet, and Clarinet. It will change instruments every 8 bars. Now play the song.Mute the Melody (Alt+9), or right click on Melody to do this. You will hear the Medley play now, with the instruments changing. But what if you want different instruments, or changing instruments at different intervals?Lets change them to every 4 bars, and add a Guitar solo instead of the Clarinet solo. Revisit the RealTracks Picker dialog.

Highlight the strings track, and press the Medley button at the top right of the screen.

In the dialog that appears, change the frequency to every 4 bars, and then click on the clarinet, and change this to a guitar (to quickly find guitar in the list, type in Guitar, Electric and the list will get filtered, and you can find Soloist 765 Guitar, J azz.Replace the second soloist (Trombone) with Silence, the second RealTracks in the list. This will provide some space for you to solo with the group. Chapter 3:QuickStart Tutorial19 Press OK, and answer YES that you want to override. You will then save the custom medley that you have made! This custom medley is saved with the song. That concludes our tour around the new features of Band-in-a-Box 2011. Chapter 4:Mixer Window20 Chapter 4:Mixer Window The new Mixer window introduced in Band-in-a-Box 2011 makes it faster, easier, and more intuitive to change the mix of your song. The Mixer floats on top of the main screen, it can be parked anywhere its convenient. You can enlarge the mixer to any size by dragging the bottom right corner of the mixer. The controls change size when you do this. The [A] Auto button, if pressed, will auto-resize the window during playback, so that it is out of the way of the chord sheet, but returns to normal size when play is stopped. The [+] button enlarges the Mixer to the size last set by the user. The [] button shrinks the Mixer to the default small size which is at the top right. The Volume, Panning, Tone, and Reverb controls are smooth faders that let you find the exact setting you want by ear as you slide the fader back and forth. This is easier and more natural than using incremental controls or typing in values. There is also a special Combo slider that lets you make live proportional adjustments to the settings. Open the Mixer window from the toolbar button or the Windows menu.It has five different screens for Patches, Volume, Panning, Tone, and Reverb that open by clicking on the top row of buttons. Chapter 4:Mixer Window21Patches The default screen is Patches, where youll see the currently assigned MIDI patches and RealTracks instruments, as well as the MIDI drum kit or RealDrums set, for the song.Click on any part to select a new instrument, either RealTracks or MIDI. Choose Set No Patch to exit without making a selection. The Mute command will mute the selected instrument part, while Solo will play just the selected part and mute all others. Use Un-Mute All to undo the Solo command and play all parts again. The Combo Slider The Combo slider is a special control found in the Volume, Panning, Tone, and Reverb screens. It makes live changes to all parts at once. When playing a song, you immediately hear the changes as you drag the Combo slider. Drag the Combo slider to the right of center to proportionally increase all track sliders. This moves all sliders FARTHER AWAY FROM ZERO while maintaining their relative balance.Drag the Combo slider to the left of center to proportionally decrease all track sliders. This moves all sliders CLOSER TO ZERO while maintaining their relative balance. The Combo slider is spring loaded. It returns to the center every time, after you have finished dragging the Combo slider and release the mouse. The operation of the Combo slider depends on the tab that is active. For example, in the Volume and Reverb tabs it makes proportional changes in levels, while the Panning and Tone sliders are bi-polar WITH ZERO IN THE MIDDLE. They increase or decrease the spread of the stereo mix or the equalization. The specific operation of the Combo slider in the different tabs is described below.Volume Click on the [S] button to Solo, or [M] to mute a track. Click at the right of the slider to enter a specific value Chapter 4:Mixer Window22 Volume settings are easily adjusted with the left-right fader for each part, just hold the mouse button down on the blue fader button and slide the smooth-glide fader back and forth. You can do this while the song is playing so that you hear your changes as you make them, and youll see a readout of the levels in the display box to the right of the fader. In the Volume tab, the Combo slider increases or decreases the overall volume levels while keeping the same relative balance (mix). You will hear the changes live as you move the slider. Panning This screen presents a handy graphical interface for adjusting the stereo placement of tracks.Glide the blue fader buttons left and right to position the part anywhere in the range from -63 (full left) to 0 (center) to 64 (full right). As you slide the fader you will see the numerical readout change and hear the stereo placement of the part shift. On the Panning tab, moving the Combo slider to the right of center will SPREAD THE STEREO MIX.Moving the Combo slider to the left of center will NARROW THE STEREO MIX.In addition, the Combo slider intentionally HAS NO EFFECT on any tracks which are PANNED EXACTLY IN THE CENTER. Tone This is a combination bass/treble control with a range from -18dB (bass) to +18dB (treble).Hold the mouse on the blue fader button and slide it to the left for more bass, or to the right for more treble. On the TONE tab, moving the Combo slider to the right of center will SPREAD THE EQUALIZATION.Moving the Combo slider to the left of center will NARROW THE EQUALIZATION.In addition, the Combo slider intentionally HAS NO EFFECT on any tracks which HAVE NO EQUALIZATION. If for instance there is bass boost on the Bass track, and treble boost on a Guitar track, moving the Combo slider to the right will make the guitar track brighter and the bass track darker. But moving the Combo slider to the left will reduce the amount of EQ on both the guitar and bass. Reverb This adjusts the level of the built-in reverb in a range from 0 to 127. Chapter 4:Mixer Window23 Moving the Combo slider to the right of center will move all the sliders to the right, adding reverb to all tracks in proportion to the existing levels.Moving the Combo slider to the left of center will move all the sliders to the left, reducing the reverb levels. Save Your Settings Save your song with the [Save +] button, or with the menu item File | Save song with patches, to save all of your mixer settings. Chapter 4:RealTracks and Soloing24 Chapter 4:RealTracks and Soloing RealTracks Improvements RealTracks now use lastique Pro V2 time stretching and pitch transposition engine by zplane.development for great natural sound. These improvements are built-in, so theres nothing you need to do to get it working.Your existing songs will just sound better over a much wider range of tempos and transpositions. The new RealTracks only take up 30% of the space that they used to.If you have RealTracks from a previous version of Band-in-a-Box, you can shrink the size of these RealTracks, and reclaim hard drive space. And the audio fidelity is improved, since it sounds better over a much wider range of tempos with the lastique Pro V2 time stretching engine! To do this, go to the RealTracks Settings dialog (Preferences). Press the [Erase Un-needed +/- Files] button to erase unneeded files from the RealTracks folder. IMPORTANT: If you plan on continuing to use older versions of Band-in-a-Box with the same RealTracks folders, then DONT erase these +/- files, because the older versions of Band-in-a-Box still need the larger size RealTracks. Q.What are RealTracks +/- files? With RealTracks from Band-in-a-Box 2010 or earlier, we included extra WMA files in the RealTracks folders. These have transposed versions of the WMA files, which have +or - in the file names. For example, BG057+1.wma would be a +/- file, whereas BG057.wma would not be one. We call them RealTracks "+/- files."They are not included with Band-in-a-Box 2011 because they are not needed and they take up extra space. Q.I bought Band-in-a-Box for the first time with version 2011.Do I need to do anything? No, there are no +/- files included with Band-in-a-Box 2011, so there is nothing to do. Chapter 4:RealTracks and Soloing25Q.I have upgraded to Band-in-a-Box 2011, and have existing RealTracks folders with +/- files.Do I need to do anything? You don't need to do anything. But if you want to save a lot of hard drive space, and you have a newer/faster machine (Vista or W7), you can go to the RealTracks Settings (Preferences) and click on [Erase Un-needed +/- files] (see details in #2 below). If you have an older/slower machine, you may want to select the "Use +/- RealTracks for generation (enable on slow machines) checkbox (see details in #1below). Customers with existing RealTracks collections (2010 or earlier) dont need to do anything, as their existing RealTracks will work.In summary: 1.If using an older/slower machine (XP): - In the RealTracks Settings dialog (Preferences), select the "Use +/- RealTracks for generation (enable on slow machines) checkbox. - Don't press the [Erase Un-needed +/- files] button. 2.If using a newer machine (Vista/W7) - In the RealTracks Settings dialog (Preferences), leave "Use +/- RealTracks for generation (enable on slow machines)" unchecked. The program won't use them. Use the program for a few days, playing all kinds of songs, including ones with lots of RealTracks, and in different keys (e.g. Gb).If you look at the CPU usage of bbw.exe during playback, you can see how hard your machine is working. If it is less than 60% CPU use, things are fine. - If you have no playback issues (stuttering, or instruments dropping out during playback), then indeed you do have a "fast machine," and can safely press the [Erase Un-needed +/- files] button.Changing RealTracksWeve enhanced RealTracks so that you can now have RealTracks styles changes within a song, generate Soloist Medleys - solos that play RealTracks instruments during the solos, and more. There are 2 ways to change RealTracks at any bar. 1. Change of RealTracks Styles at any Bar.With previous versions of Band-in-a-Box, you were limited to one RealTracks style per song. Now you can change styles with RealTracks at any bar.J ust select the style in the Edit | Edit Settings for Current Bar dialog. For example, switch from J azz Swing to Bossa style at any bar.You can change the entire style at a bar.To do this, first open the Edit Settings for Bar dialog (press F5) at the bar that you want the style change. Then press the Style change button to select a style change. 2. Change of individual RealTracks instrument can be added to any track at any bar.You can insert a specific RealTracks instrument at any bar to create a customized performance. You can change specific RealTracks without changing the style. For example, if you want to change an Acoustic Bass comping part to an Acoustic Bass Solo at Chorus 4, Bar 1, you can do this.To change a certain tracks RealTracks at any bar, first open the Edit Settings for Bar dialog (press F5) at the bar that you want the style change. Then press the [RealTracks] button and you will see the RealTracks changes dialog where you can choose which tracks you would like to have RealTracks changes on. Chapter 4:RealTracks and Soloing26 Select a track, then press the Change RealTracks to and you will then see a list of RealTracks. You will see a huge list of RealTracks, so you will likely want to narrow it down.Type a word that will be included in the RealTracks name, like bass. Then the list will only show bass RealTracks. RealTracks Solos Soloist Medleys In Soloist Medleys, the RealTracks is made to switch instruments every N bars or every chorus. For example, you can add a Bluegrass Medley Soloist that switches between solos from Mandolin, Guitar, Banjo, and Fiddle every 4 bars.Or a J azz Medley Soloist that switches between Alto Sax, Trumpet, Piano, and Guitar solos every chorus.Or insert Silence as one of the instruments, which allows you to Chapter 4:RealTracks and Soloing27play your own instrument.Use the pre-made Soloist Medleys included, or create a custom one yourself on any track. There are 3 ways that you can get RealTracks with Medleys (changing soloists). 1.Some styles have them built-in (see StylePicker for details). 2.Some RealTracks have Medleys built in, applicable to all songs.Look in the RealTracks picker, and search for a filter term Medley. You will then see Medleys that are available You can define your own Medley, to be saved with the current song only.To do this, start in the RealTracks Picker, with the RealTracks that you want as the first of the medley. Then press the [Medley] button. You will then see the Create a Medley of different RealTracks dialog. In this dialog, you can specify how often you want the RealTracks to change, and create a list of instruments that you want to have included. In the example shown, we have created a Medley from RealTracks 361 (Tenor Sax), by adding Clarinet and Flute, and having them change soloists every 4 bars. When you are choosing RealTracks to use, note that there is a RealTracks available called Silence. This is to be used when you want to play, for example if you want to trade 4s with the band. Chapter 4:RealTracks and Soloing28 The option to Start on second item in the list is useful if you want to start on a different instrument, or start with Silence. Multiple RealTracks at the same time on the same track. You can use this feature to add up to 10 RealTracks to play simultaneously on the same track. This is useful if you want to generate a lot of RealTracks, the theoretical limit would be 7 tracks x 10 per track =70 RealTracks instruments playing at the same time. Multiple RealTracks are created like Soloist Medleys (as described above), but you also select the option Play all simultaneously. Then all of the instruments will play at all times. Customized RealTracks Soloing Regenerate part of a Soloist track, without erasing the existing part. This allows you to customize your Soloist track by regenerating parts of the solo with the same or different RealTracks. For example, generate a 4-bar clarinet solo at bar 9.Then generate an 8-bar flute solo at bar 49.The file plays back with both solos intact. To do this, press the Soloist button then select the range for the solo. You can repeat the process, for a different range, with a different RealTracks, and all of them will play on the same track.Editing RealTracks Soloists The Soloist Editor dialog now allows editing of many RealTracks parameters. Press the [More] button in the Soloist Editor. This launches the Edit Extra Soloist Information dialog. This allows you to change parameters about the RealTracks. If you have the number of the RealTracks instrument to edit, you can select it by clicking on the [#] button and typing in the numbers These buttons will step back and forth through the list of RealTracks soloists to make your selection. Chapter 4:RealTracks and Soloing29The Artist Name is given, and also the Style Names for styles that use the particular instrument. The Holds Number and Holds Number B Substyle identify the location of the files played when shots or held chords are entered into a song. The volume level of the Holds that play can be adjusted in a range of +/- 64 dB.There are separate settings for a and b substyles. The Audio Reverb for the instrument can be adjusted. Similar to the Soloist Medleys, it is possible to have multiple RealTracks instruments change in sequence. There is also the option to have all ten instruments in the list of RealTracks for the track play together. Chapter 4:RealTracks and Soloing30 The new lastique Pro V2 time stretching and pitch transposition engine by zplane.development expands the possibilities for playing RealTracks in half, double, or even triple-time. Technical Tip:This information is stored in a file called RTExtra.bin.If you plan on changing these settings, and want to preserve them, you should make a backup copy of this file, because PG Music upgrades may overwrite it. Chapter 5:Styles and the StylePicker31Chapter 5:Styles and the StylePicker StylePicker Enhancements The StylePicker display is now wider on bigger monitors. It is also useful because it can demo a style that you dont have, or you can compare to make sure that yours sounds the same as it is supposed to sound.Q:What advantage should I be expecting by using the [Web Demo] button that I don't already have for reviewing a style via the [Load Song Demo] button? A:The web demo has the following advantages over the [Load Song Demo] button. It will: 1.Play a demo "as its supposed to sound" so you will be sure of what the intended sounds are. 2.Play, even if you are missing some of the RealTracks needed for the style. 3.Play without messing up the song that you are working on by loading in a new one, allowing you to more quickly try out different styles. StylePicker Filters New StylePicker Filters make it easier to choose from the hundreds of RealStyles and MIDI styles available in Band-in-a-Box by showing you only the styles that match your search criteria. The filters help you to select styles by allowing you to specify: Even/Swing feel, 8ths/16ths, Chapter 5:Styles and the StylePicker32 tempo range, #of instruments, specific instruments, specific RealTracks Artists, RealDrums Artists,Real styles or MIDI styles. Show styles with missing RealTracks. For example, if you are searching for a Jazz Ballad style that is all RealTracks, has bass, drums, and guitar, works for a tempo of 60, with Swing 8ths you can set this filter and then only see styles that match these criteria, instead of a list of thousands of styles. To use the Filter, press the [Filter] button on the StylePicker. This launches the StylePicker Filter dialog. Here you can set the various filters, to narrow down your search for styles. New StylePicker Columns added #of instruments in style, e.g. 4. Whether any required RealTracks, RealDrums are not installed, e.g. NA. Whether a RealTracks substitute for a MIDI style is available, e.g. sub. For example, you will see sub beside the ZZJ AZZ style. Chapter 5:Styles and the StylePicker33 Styles with RealTracksMultiStyles (with up to 16 substyles) can now be made with RealTracks. To make a song using multiple substyles, right-click on a bar number, and add substyles by selecting additional styles with RealTracks. Then there will be multiple substyles a/b/c/d. Note that you can also make a style like this with the StyleMaker. 1.Style Aliases allows you to customize this feature by adding the name of a style that should get substituted for a certain style. 2.Find a RealTracks replacement for current MIDI style will manually substitute a RealTracks for the current MIDI style, if one is available. For example, if the current style is the original J azz style ZZJ AZZ, then choose this to get a RealTracks style instead.Note that a substitute only gets made if you have the RealTracks installed. 3.Restore Style prior to Style Alias. If a style replacement gets made, but you would prefer the original MIDI style instead, you can choose Restore Style prior to Style Alias. 4.Auto-replace MIDI styles with RealTracks styles when songs loaded. If selected, the style replacements will happen automatically for every song. These options are also available from the RealTracks button. Chapter 5:Styles and the StylePicker34 Auto-Generated style memo added for each style. This lists names of all instruments, #of instruments, RealTracks/RealDrums used, whether any required RT/RD are missing, and more. Example Memo: _BOSAMDF.STY. Bossa Med slow FreeComp Gt (110RS) All RealTracks. Trio.RD: BossaTerryClarke^1-Brushes , Terry Clarke RT921: Bass, Acoustic, Bossa Ev 110, Neil Swainson RT923: Guitar, Electric, Rhythm BossaFreeComp Ev 110, Oliver Gannon Chapter 6:Band-in-a-Box for iPhone 35Chapter 6:Band-in-a-Box for iPhone Introducing Band-in-a-Box for iPhone Band-in-a-Box for iPhone (BB iPhone) is an app for iOS devices including iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. The BB iPhone version is meant to function as a client to the regular Band-in-a-Box desktop version. If you don't own a copy of the BB Desktop software, the usefulness of the BB iPhone version will be quite limited. Band-in-a-Box for iPhone is available from the Apple App Store, http://www.apple.com/iphone/apps-for-iphone/.If you have a copy of Band-in-a-Box 2011, then with the Band-in-a-Box iPhone version you can: - Quickly transfer your existing library of songs from BB Desktop to BB iPhone, including chord lead sheets and audio (M4A).See the chord lead sheets and play the songs anytime on your iPhone, without re-connecting to BB Desktop.- Enter songs from scratch on your BB iPhone by typing in chord symbols to the song. - Generate audio on your BB iPhone for the songs by pressing play. The songs play on the iPhone and are stored on the iPhone as M4A files. This connects across your home network or the internet to your desktop version of Band-in-a-Box - Send songs from BB iPhone to BB Desktop. Here are some typical uses for your BB iPhone version. This assumes that you have the BB Desktop version: - J im has entered lots of songs over the years into his BB Desktop version. He now wants to practice his guitar playing on these tunes using only his BB iPhone. As a one-time procedure, at home (over his home network WiFi) he first transfers his entire song library to BB iPhone, including lead sheets and audio. This takes about 10 seconds per song. Now he has his BB song library on his BB iPhone, and doesn't need to connect to his BB Desktop again (unless he wants more songs, or to generate different chords for the songs). He plays the songs on his iPhone, either using the iPhone speakers, headphones, or plugging the iPhone line out into his stereo system. He will only ever need to connect to BB Desktop again if he wants to get more songs, or regenerate them in different styles etc. - J oan is playing a solo vocal gig, using BB iPhone as her backup band. She connects the iPhone audio out to the PA system.A customer requests one of her compositions, a song that she knows, but doesn't have a backing band arrangement for.On her break, she types in the chords to the song, presses PLAY, and the audio file generates and is ready to play on her BB iPhone (by connecting to BB Desktop over the Internet). After the gig, she sends the song to her BB Desktop, so that is available there too as part of her song library. Program Tutorial Instructions for using Band-in-a-Box iPhone version. Run the BB iPhone program by clicking on the icon. You will then see the Band-in-a-Box screen. This consists of:- Top Toolbar area (File Mixer Settings Play/Stop Chord Keyboard). - Title display line. - Chords area. If you want to edit information in a song, press the Chord Keyboard icon. This will open up the chord keyboard, and also a Song Parameters section at the top to choose style, tempo and song form.Chapter 6:Band-in-a-Box for iPhone 36 Let's open and play an existing song. Press FILE and then OPEN.You will then see a list of the demo songs that are included with BB iPhone. You should see Blues Shuffle Demo and J azz Swing Demo. You will notice that these file names are in green. The green indicates that audio (M4A) is available for these songs, and they are ready-to-play and don't have to be re-generated. Choose Jazz Swing Demo. This song was previously generated using BB iPhone, and the arrangement was made entirely from the chord progression. The arrangement sounds realistic because it is using the high quality RealTracks present in Band-in-a-Box.Press the Green PLAY button.(Note: If the play button is Red, it indicates that the song will need to be generated, by connecting to BB Desktop). Press STOP at any time. Let's enter our own song from scratch. We will enter a simple blues progression, which is 12 bars long, in the key of C. Press File and then NEW.Open up the Chord Keyboard, so that the song is editable. Choose a style for the song.Press the Style button (at the left of the screen, below the title), then choose the genre Blues, and select the style _BLSHUFF (Blues Shuffle) which is the 3rd one on the list. Leave thetempo at the default of 140 (or change it by clicking on it). Leave the key signature at C (or change it by clicking on it). Thesong formula will say something like [1] [16] [3].That means the song form begins at bar 1, and ends at bar 16, and repeats 3 times.Since this is a 12 bar blues (not 16 bars), we click on the 16 and change it to 12.We can leave the number of repeats of the form at 3 (or change it by clicking on it). Type in the chords.Click on bar 1 on the chord sheet. Then use the chord keyboard to type in a chord. To move to a new bar, click on the bar so that the highlight bar moves to that bar.Once you are in the bar, type the chord on the chord keyboard. Type C in bar 1. Type F in bar 5. Type C in bar 7. Type G7 in bar 9 - do this by typing G and then 7. Type F7 in bar 10. Type C in bar 11. Enter a title for your song.Call it My Blues and then save it by choosing File-Save. That's it!You've entered your first song.Close the Chords Keyboard window. Now to hear your song, you are going to need to be connected to your Band-in-a-Box Desktop version. Connecting to the BB Desktop Version Since the song has not been generated yet, the PLAY button will be RED, indicating that the song audio needs to be generated.Press the red Play button, and this will launch the Server Connection dialog. Here you will either enter the IP that is displayed from your home network (if BB Desktop is on the same home network as your iPhone), or your IP address of your BB Desktop version (or router).Details of router setup are available on the File-Help menu. Once you have entered the Server IP, then press OK, and then enter the password (the default password is admin, so if you haven't changed it, that will work). Chapter 6:Band-in-a-Box for iPhone 37You will then see Loading styles this only happens when it is a new connection, and BB desktop is telling BB iPhone what styles are available. After that, you will see Generating song and then Downloading file. After a wait of 15-30 seconds, your song will start playing.Press STOP to stop the song.At this point, the song My Blues now has audio saved with it, and will be ready to play next time without connecting to the BB Desktop version. Let's get an existing song from the BB Desktop version. Press File and then Server, then Get Song(s).You will then see a list of the songs that are available on the BB Desktop program (i.e., the songs present in the BB2Go folder inside the BB folder).
