BANANA SHIRE COUNCIL COMMUNITY RESOURCE CENTRE
Ensures access to the most
appropriate services to meet
needs
Provides resources,
specialized equipment, kits
and games to promote
learning & development
Delivers funded support to
schools
Dear Teacher
At the Community Resource Centre we recognise the complexities of providing quality
educational experiences that meet the both needs of the diversity of students and the
demands imposed by the curriculum.
For this reason our Library has developed an extensive collection of resources to assist with
a wide range of the physical, cognitive, social, organisational and academic challenges.
While funding for the CRC specifically targets the needs of verified students, the bulk of our
resources have been found to be helpful in many educational settings.
Our Library’s collection is continually evolving and expanding, with valuable input from
various allied health professionals and educators. Consequently we appreciate constructive
feedback and suggestions from our clients. Borrowers are therefore invited to comment on
the effectiveness of loaned resources and suggest changes or additions, either in person, by
email or using the feedback form (included in the Appendix of this booklet).
This Information Booklet is provided as a quick guide to the range and types of resources
available for loan. Most categories include a range of resources to cater for different ages
and stages of development.
In order to borrow from the CRC, individuals, groups or organisations (eg schools) become
members of the CRC for a modest annual fee (pricing available on the Banana Shire
website https://www.banana.qld.gov.au/). The Centre is open every weekday from 9.00am-
5.00pm, and our experienced, supportive staff are available to assist with advice concerning
selection, collection or delivery, either in person, over the phone (07 4992 7360) or via
email: [email protected]. Our ‘Resource Request Form’ is also included in the
Appendix for your convenience.
We hope you find this information helpful.
Kind regards
Pam Semple
Senior Program Advisor

Seating for learning
Some students may have difficulty maintaining good posture and require special positions
to assist them to learn, play, eat and dress.
Particular attention should be paid to students with:
o Increased muscle tone
o Low muscle tone
o Fluctuating muscle tone
o Muscle weakness
o Orthopaedic conditions
o Learning difficulties
o Difficulties with attention to task
Often the equipment needed for these students may be found in any school, and may only
need minor modifications. Wooden chairs, sloped working surfaces, cut out tables with
height adjustability and foot rests may be all that is needed for most students. Some
students who have more severe physical disabilities may require their own custom-made
seating.
Why is good seating so important?
Appropriate positioning of the body while sitting is essential to being able to:
o pay attention in class
o to write
o type
o access a computer
o eat and drink
o co-ordinate the eyes and hands
Good seating posture Checklist – Bottom to Top:
Feet flat on the floor Ankles and Knees at right angles (90°)
Bottom well back in the chair to provide
support under the thighs
 Seat depth not too deep;
bottom is right back, with a 2 finger gap
between the end of the seat and back of the
knees
 Lower back against the backrest
 Trunk upright and in midline
 Shoulders are not hunched
Elbows rest comfortably on the table
top so forearms can be used for stabilising
during fine motor tasks
 Head in midline
 General Posture is Relaxed
Common difficulties with seating in the classroom
Problem Solution Feet are not on floor
o Unstable posture
Student sit forward o To relieve pressure behind the back of the
knees
Bottom not all the way back o Dangling on the front of the chair
= Chair too big
o Put a footrest under their feet so they sit
flat. Eg 1 or 2 phone books
o Non slip mat on seat can prevent bottom
from sliding forward
o Take the student down to the next size
chair
o Put a foam insert behind the child’s back
so that their lower back is against the
foam and their knees aren’t pressured
against the seat
Student sitting awkwardly o Hunched over
o Sliding down in chair
o Asymmetrical without feet flat on the
floor
o Legs spread apart or to one side
= Desk too low
o Use height adjustable desk
o Check chair height – it may be the cause of
the problem if it’s too high
o Remove the tidy tray if legs squashed
o Place a slope board on top of the desk
surface
Elbows level with shoulders o When forearms on desk
Elevated / shrugged shoulders o May place stress on the neck and shoulder
muscles
Sitting on legs on the chair o To get higher
Kneeling on chair o To get higher
= Desk too big
o Use a height adjustable desk
o Check size of chair and replace / build up if
too low
o Check feet are flat on floor-use a different
chair or foot rest to correct chair height
Legs tucked underneath chair o Feet not flat to maintain stable position
Slumped down in chair o Bottom slid forward on seat
Legs spread o So not cramped up under desk
Bottom/ thighs sit over sides of seat
= Chair too small
o It is better to have a chair too big than too
small, as a big chair can be built up with
foam and a footrest.
o Replace a chair that is too small and check
fit of desk again
Always re-check seating posture after changing equipment to make sure that the new workstation is a
good fit for the student.
