Home/School LinksWe strongly value the links between home and school and believe that mutual respect and good communication enable us all to provide the best care and education for your child. We have an ‘open door’ policy which means that you are welcome into school any time if you have concerns or questions. If you are unable to pop in then a letter to the class teacher or head teacher or a comment in the home/school liaison book is another way to communicate with us.

We have regular meetings and forum sessions for parents which enable information to be shared and children’s progress to be discussed. However, please feel free to contact us to make additional appointments to discuss issues if they arise. An end of year report is sent home detailing the progress children have made, their successes and any areas to develop in the future. We send out regular newsletters, detailing what has been happening in school and informing you of upcoming events. We are currently updating our school website which will be another way to keep up to date with what is going on.We welcome parental support in any form, whether helping in class with reading, cooking, playing games etc or helping on trips. Please contact a member of staff if you would like to help.

PTFAWe have a very dedicated and enthusiastic Parent, Teachers and Friends Association at BamptonSchool. When your child starts at school, you automatically become a member! Throughout the year the PTFA organise a range of fun social events ranging from fetes and competitions to talent shows and discos. Your support, whether helping to organise, run or attend is greatly appreciated. All proceeds raised at these events are used to enrich the children’s learning experience by purchasing additional resources or paying for trips/visitors. Another way to raise money with the PTFA is to register at www.easyfundraising.org.uk

In addition the school teaches religious education using the Diocesan Agreed Syllabus and has programmes to teach personal, social and moral education and citizenship. It provides an opportunity for children and staff to participate in a shared experience of celebration, praise and thanks to God within a common ethos. Parents have the right to withdraw their children from sex education lessons, religious education and from the daily act of worship. Parents are invited to pre-view sex education materials so that they are well informed about what their child will be learning. At the start of each term your child’s class teacher will send home a letter about the topics being covered by the class.

School policies relating to every curriculum subject are available for parents to view by appointment with the school office.

The Curriculum Compulsory education in the United Kingdom is divided into these Stages: The Foundation Stage, 3 - 5years (Green Meadows) Key Stage One, 5 - 7 years (Yellow Class) Key Stage Two, 7 - 11years (Blue class and Red Class) Key Stage Three, 11 - 14 years Key Stage Four, 14 - 16 years

HomeworkQuote from the Standards site Sept 2010, ‘When parents reinforce the work of the school at home, there is a potential for raising standards further’The school is developing clear guidelines for homework. Your child’s teacher will let you know what the homework routines are. All children are expected to do a minimum of 3 home reads with each week lasting approximately 20 minutes and these should be logged in the home/school reading diary. The system for selecting books will be explained during the induction sessions and at other times such as parents’ consultation meetings. If you are unsure about the system please speak to your child’s teacher at the earliest convenient opportunity. Children in KS1 and KS2 will also be given weekly number facts to learn and maths class extension homework too. Younger children may have tables to learn, words sent home to practice or objects to collect for a project. Key Stage Two children are expected to maintain their reading, have a weekly maths activity sent home, usually have some spellings to learn and may also be asked to complete a work sheet or carry out some topic related research. We do not assume that all children have Internet access and do provide children with the resources they need to complete a task.

Special Educational NeedsAt Bampton School the staff and Governors are committed to offering an inclusive curriculum to ensure the best possible progress for all pupils whatever their needs or abilities. Pupils are deemed to have a Special Educational need if they have a learning difficulty, which calls for special educational provision to be made for them. The school is committed to the early identification of pupils who may have a special educational need and adopts a graduated approach to meeting special needs in line with the 2002 Code of Practice.

Parents and pupils are an integral part of the process and contribute to the setting and review of agreed targets. The school co-ordinator for Special Educational Needs (SENCO) is Mrs Paula Shore. The school has a range of health and education professionals it can call upon to provide specialist advice when necessary.

Gifted, Able and Talented PupilsThe school provides opportunities for pupils to take part in a range of specialist activities to challenge and extend more able pupils. Such opportunities might include taking part in special maths or science challenges at Tiverton High School, Exeter or Plymouth Universities or residential arts activities. Class work is differentiated to challenge more able pupils as well as to support less able pupils. At times more open ended learning challenges are provided for pupils to develop their interests and undertake research using computers. A school register is maintained so that all staff are aware of children’s talents. Parents are informed if their child has been placed on the register.

After School ClubsTeachers and other suitably qualified adults provide a number of regular after school activities for pupils each week. The pattern of clubs changes so that a variety of opportunities are available to suit all tastes.

Extra-curricular and enrichment activitiesWe provide regular planned opportunities for children to complement their studies in school with trips and visits to places of historical, religious, scientific and geographical interest. The school belongs to the organisation Devon Artists In Schools, DAISI, and regularly invite practising artists from the world of dance, music and the visual arts to work alongside pupils in school. Instrumental tuition is available in school for a range of instruments and this service is provided by teachers from Devon Youth Music. The School has close links with Tiverton High School who also host a number of additional workshops and activities for pupils from this school.

Complaints ProcedureThe LEA has a procedure for parents who have a complaint. Details of this are available from the school, however it is hoped that in the first instance any parent with a concern would contact the class teacher or head teacher as this discussion usually resolves most issues.

BehaviourOur behaviour policy is designed to support all pupils in an inclusive manner. We want to help the children to be happy, to think and work together, discover and achieve in creative learning environment. Parental support modelling and encouraging positive behaviour is greatly appreciated. Full details of our behaviour and discipline policy are available from the office.

Transition and LiaisonWe know how important it is for children to feel safe and confident at every stage of their schooling. Change can be daunting for most children, so we ensure that transition from class to class and setting to setting is as smooth as possible. We have links with local pre schools, play groups and child minders. As part of our induction to Green Meadows Foundation Class we offer home visits, taster sessions and meetings for parents. This enables parents and children to become familiar with the setting and staff before starting. In the term before your child moves to a new class they have opportunities to spend time with their new class mates and teacher, trying out different activities and airing any concerns that they might have. Staff share information on the children’s individual abilities and needs. We have links with the local secondary schools, in particular Tiverton High School. During year 6 we prepare the children for the move to high school. This is achieved by:• inviting teachers to meet with the children• planning visits to Tiverton High School• Parents and children participating in open evenings at THS• transferring information relating to individual children and their needs

Holidays and AbsencesWe hope that parents/carers will ensure that their children attend school regularly and punctually. It is important that parents carefully consider the implications of taking their child out of school during term time. The school follows the Common Attendance Policy, which has been agreed by all schools in the Tiverton Learning Community in conjunction with the Devon Education Welfare Service. If you need to take your child out of school during school time please obtain the head teacher’s permission and then fill out a holiday form which is available from the school office. Such a request can be for a period of up to 5 days. The law requires us to record unauthorised absences on the children’s individual end of year reports. If a child’s absence falls below the government target of 93% attendance, then an absence request may not be granted.

Absence rates for 2010 Authorised absence 5.0% Unauthorised absence 0.4 % Overall 5.4%

When your Child is unwell or has an AppointmentOn the day of absence please try to telephone the school before 9am so that we know where your child isWhen your child returns to school a letter must be sent to explain their absenceIf the illness is likely to be prolonged please keep the school informed of your child’s progress

Medical MattersMedication is administered to children who have chronic/long term conditions and a consent form for this is available from the school office. However, the school does not generally administer medicines such as antibiotics for common childhood illnesses. It is recommended that children remain at home until any course of treatment prescribed is completedPlease provide us with an emergency contact number so that we can notify you If your child is unwell during

Page 14: Bampton School Prospectus

School TransportSubsidised and free school transport is available for pupils dependent upon their age and the distance they live from the school. Where space is available it is sometimes possible to use school transport upon payment. For current information about entitlement and availability of this service please contact the school office. Pupils using school transport are met at the school gate upon arrival and registered and escorted to transport in the evening. Please impress upon your child the importance of wearing their seatbelt at all times during their journey and behaving appropriately.

SafetyThe school has an up to date health and safety policy. There is a CCTV system for monitoring the school grounds and a coded security door at the main entrance. We ask that if travelling by car, parents park in the lower car park and do not obstruct the road up to the school, leaving it free for the school buses. When entering the school grounds on foot, please stay on the paths and encourage children to do the same, rather than walking on the road.

When visiting the school between 9 and 3.30 please sign in at reception.
