EVERYTHING NIGHT - OPEN GYM, GAMES & MOVIESaturday, February 6th, March 5th 6:00-9:00pm

Come to the school for an evening of everything! The gym will be set up for badminton & floor hockey. Bring your favourite board game or cards to play in the foyer. Or, skip the competition and watch a movie with popcorn in the library. All ages welcome. If attendance is good we will continue these nights.

JUMP ROPE 4 HEARTFebruary 12, 10:45-11:45 (time is tentative, check with BCSA for updates)

The Canadian Heart & Stroke Foundation encourages kids to learn about the benefits of healthy eating and physical activity through the Jump program. Come join BCS students in the morning - get active and skip rope while collecting pledges for heart disease and stroke research.

VIU DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAMApril 14-17

2 Instructors and 6 senior Hygiene students from Vancouver Island University will be visiting Bamfield to do dental hygiene check-ups and cleanings in the school library. FREE for all members of the community.

ANACLA/BAMFIELD COMMUNITY POTLUCK DINNERSSunday, January 17, February 14, March 13, April 10, 5:00pm at House of Huu ay aht

Start the New Year by sharing a meal with the whole community. Bring a dish if you can. Thanks to Stella Peters for organizing, these dinners will continue to happen every month.

ROBBIE BURNS DINNERSaturday, January 23, 5:00pm

Celebrate Scottish poet and lyricist Robert Burns over dinner at the Firehall. Tickets: $25, available at Bamfield Mercantile & Marine, the Post Office, Bamfield Builders Supply, & The Market.

COMMUNITY AFFAIRS MEETINGThe third Monday of every month at the school: January 18, February 15, March 21, April 18.

Description: Join us at the Firehall for an afternoon mastering 2 loaves of bread: a simple whole wheat loaf and a sourdough.

CARVINGDate/Time: Saturday, March 12 – Sunday, March 13Location: SchoolInstructor: Hjalmer WenstobFee: Children & youth are FREE, Adults $20.00

Description: Come out and join us at the Bamfield Community School, for a two-day, Nuu-chah-nulth, carving course, led by Nuu-chah-nulth carver Hjalmer Wenstob, and his family. Over the course of two days, we will gather and create a work of art, and space to share stories, culture, and songs! Please bring your family and friends to come out and create a community project together. The end of the project on day two, will be in conjunction with the Bamfiled/Anacla community potluck dinner, hosted at the House of Huu-ay-aht. All tools provided, and all ages, and levels of experience welcome!

GUITAR LESSONS WITH DENNIS OLSEN - BEGINNERDate & Time: Thursday, April 14- performance for BCS students in the afternoon. Performance for the general public, 7-8pm.Friday, April 15 – afternoon and evening guitar lessonsSaturday, April 16 – 1 morning guitar lessonLocation: SchoolInstructor: Dennis Olsen http://www.dennisolsen.ca/ Fee: $20.00 per 1 hour lesson. Note: BCSA can supplement a portion of this cost for those that may need it. Description: Master of everything, Dennis Olsen, will be visiting from Port Alberni April 14-16, to perform and offer 4 hours of beginner guitar lessons. A guitar is required, talk to BCSA if you would like to participate but do not have a guitar.

BASIC CHAINSAW OPERATION - FULLDate: Saturday, January 30 – Sunday, January 31Time: 8:00am-4:00pmLocation: Meet at school library Saturday at 8amFee: $357.50 including all course materials & equipment. Registration is now full.Instructor: Steve Telosky

Description: 2 day (10 hour) basic chainsaw course developed by QST Consulting Ltd and BC Forest Safety Council using information and material meeting requirements of Work Safe BC. Covers regulation requirements, maintenance and filing instructions in the field. Practice basic saw starting and operating skills. No experience or chainsaw required. Successful students earn a Basic Chainsaw Certification card. Wear good support work boots or caulked boots.

ADULT LITERACYDate: January-June 2016Time: TBALocation: SchoolInstructor: Janet Simpson-CookeFee: none

Description: Earn credits towards a B.C. Adult Graduation Diploma (Adult Dogwood). Strengthening reading, spelling, and writing up to Grade 12 level before taking college courses. Ages18+.

Professional Development

MARINE BASIC FIRST AID – 4 SPACES LEFT!Date: Saturday, February 13 – Sunday, February 14Time: 8:00am-5:00pm with a 1 hour break for lunch.Location: School gymFee: $230.00 including books and materials.

Description: 2 day (16 hour) course reviewing 1st Aid and CPR skills for the marine/fishing industry. Covers safety assessment, appreciation of body structure/functions, positioning of person, the unconscious person, CPR C, management of shock, treatment of bleeding, burns, and injuries caused by electricity, and rescue and transport. Successful students will earn 3-year certification in Marine Basic First Aid & CPR Level C, equivalent to Standard First Aid & CPR Level C, and AED, and a Transport Canada certification in Marine Basic First Aid. Participants are requested to bring their own lunch.

Prerequisite: Transport Canada issued Candidate Document Number (CDN)

To register: 5 spaces left. Contact the BCSA office to register by January 22. Allow 2 weeks to obtain a CDN, application forms are available at http://www.albernifirstaid.com/candadate-document-number.html. The application and 2 copies of photo ID must be sighted and signed by the Coast Guard and brought to BCSA ASAP.

STRONGSTART BC PRESCHOOL SESSIONSDate: Thursdays, February - MarchTime: 3:15-4:15pm (during After School Club). Location: SchoolInstructor: Lisa HerbigFee: none

Description: BCSA is offering four 1 hour education sessions for parents and caregivers with pre-school aged children. Through stories, music and art, the StrongStart program focuses on developing language, physical, cognitive, social and emotional skills in preparation for Kindergarten. Dates and time may be adjusted based on the scheduling needs of interested parents.

Description: Ron Long (professional photographer at SFU for 36 years) will be visiting Bamfield one weekend to teach a beginner’s digital photography course, with help from Marc Phillips (Bamfield’s photojournalist). You will need your own digital camera.
