Separated by four centuries, Philip Glass’s upbeat minimalist style is a recognizable descendant of The Four Seasons. Vivaldi’s beloved, vivid depiction of the seasons contrasts with the collision of real science and science fiction in Brian Greene’s novella, Icarus at the Edge of Time. Glass’ intoxicating score accompanies video images of a young boy’s time-traveling journey towards a black hole.

Off the Cuff A Season of Vivaldi Friday, November 6, 2015 – 8:15 pm (S) Saturday, November 7, 2015 – 7 pm (M) Marin Alsop, conductor VIVALDI: The Four Seasons Jonathan Carney, violin How do notes on a page communicate an idea? Why do we hear a thunderstorm, winter’s chill or a bird song when we listen to an orchestra play? Vivaldi set out to show Baroque critics that “program music” had its place among serious compositions. Those ideas he captures in music have made The Four Seasons a concert hall staple and a popular cultural touchstone.
